Goldstone Dares US on Gaza Report
Richard Goldstone, the jurist who authored a UN report accusing Israel of war crimes and crimes against humanity during its war on Gaza, has challenged the US to justify its claims that his findings are flawed and biased. Goldstone told Al Jazeera on Thursday that he had not heard from the administration of Barack Obama, the US president, about the flaws Washington claims to have identified in the report.
"I
have yet to hear from the Obama administration what the flaws in the
report that they have identified are. I would be happy to respond to
them, if and when I know what they are," Goldstone said.
"The Obama administration joined our recommendation calling for full and good-faith investigations, both in Israel and in Gaza [by Hamas], but said that the report was flawed."
'Personal attack'
Goldstone said the attacks on him had become personal and that he believed most critics had not even read the report.
"I've no doubt, many of the critics - the overwhelmingly majority of critics - have not read the report," he said.
"And, you know, what proves that, I think, is that the level of criticism does not go to the substance of the report."There still have not been responses to the really serious allegations that are made. People generally don't like to be accused of criminal activity.
"So it didn't surprise me that there was criticism, even strong criticism, and it has come from both sides."
Goldstone said he regretted the "extremes from which some of the criticism has come and the fact that it has been so personal".
The remarks follow US criticism of the report, which it says is one-sided.
The US was among countries which voted against a UN human rights council resolution on the report passed in Geneva by 25 votes to six with 11 countries abstaining.
The Goldstone report also accuses Hamas, the Palestinian faction in control of Gaza, of war crime violations, but it reserved most of its criticism for Israel.
Israel's three-week offensive on Gaza between last December and January killed about 1,400 Palestinians, a majority of them women and children, and 13 Israelis.
Israel said it attacked the coastal territory to stop Hamas fighters firing rockets into southern Israel.

While He did not deal with this particular situation in his book, welcome to The Chalmers Johnson concept of "Blowback" and understand that the hatred of much of the world is focused on the USA as a result of our support of the criminal Israeli state. I personally take the continued existance of which as evidence against the existence of a "God". Per their own mythology, God found them often to be a proud and sinful people often in need of punishment. I profoundly agree with him.
Trailing Begonia,
I have a question for you.
You write: What a whole bunch of sub-standard human beings they all are. Sickening! If this is what it's like to be Chosen, I thank the Darwin for being un-chosen.
I imagine you are referring to Jews. The problem is that the author of the report, Goldstone himself, is both a Jew and a Zionist- he sits on the Board of Hebrew University. Is he a sub-standard human being?
Neither the conservative, mainstream press or the so-called progressive lefties like you want to make mention of these two facts. I wonder why that is.
You're the reason Jews that find Israel to be sickening question whether you hate the state or us.
I think you are overreacting here. As with so many pro-Israeli Jews– who almost wish to find evidence of anti-semitism under each fallen leaf– and are actually disappointed when they do not– you make a mountain out of a mole hill.
Sadly, it is the failure of secular Jews to excise the cancer of Zionism which has allowed the not always equivalent realities of hatred for the Jewish state and hatred for the Jewish people, to be conflated in the mind's eye.
I am well aware that Richard Goldstone is a Jew and a Zionist and sits on the board of Hebrew University. That very fact goes far to legitimize his courageous work and gives it an overwhelming credence; it also goes far to explain the shortcomings in his report due to an inherent Zionist bias. He bends over backward to appear 'balanced' when the truth is really far more unilaterally damning of the Israeli state than he is willing to conclude.
For the record, I hate the Jewish terror state and feel it should be dissolved if not destroyed by force if necessary. It is an illegal state from its inception. I believe in a one state solution, of an entirely secular nature. The concept of the 'chosen' is a disgrace to the Jewish people, and contains the seeds of its genocidal and racist policies it currently administers through apartheid, state terror and extra legal murder. It is easy and permisible to mock the concept of the 'chosen people,' without erroneously construing that as hatred.
Having said that, the contributions to the human project from the Jewish peoples have been immeasurable and at the highest levels of what can be called civilization. Two noted examples that come to mind are Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky. The actions of Israel seem to be expunging that legacy and planting the seeds of distrust and acrimony into even those who love and admire the Jewish people and its culture.
It is all too easy now to be totally intolerant of ANY defense of Israel and for good reason. This can easily be perceived as a racist hatred of the Jewish people themselves. It is this fallacious reasoning that is often used to opportunistically undermine critics of Israel, by suspecting them of racial hatred, where none exists. The worst part of all is that it causes one to lose many wonderful Jewish friends. –(Jill Bains)
Goldstone strikes me as having gone overboard to find fault with Palestinians to placate Israeli apologists when the fact of the matter is that the Israeli attack was no more a war than that of Germany in the Warsaw Ghetto. The numbers alone prove that it was a massacre.
I just noticed that the US is demanding a war crimes probe of the war in Sri Lanka.
Talk about hypocrisy!!!
But I could be wrong !
Whichever US diplomat or official came out with the announcement about Sri Lanka can shove his fake moral indignation where the sun don't shine.
I'm sick of these Orwellian thugs running the show. Un*%^&believable, do they think the world hasn't caught on to their charades?
"Israel's three-week offensive on Gaza between last December and January killed about 1,400 Palestinians, a majority of them women and children, and 13 Israelis."
Not quite. Of the 13 Israelis who died 4 were killed by friendly fire. That makes it 1,440 to 9 a ratio of 160 to 1.
In the year prior to this Israeli attack, 0 (zero) Israelis were killed by Palestinian 'rockets'.
Total number of Israelis killed by rockets since they first started in 2001, 23. Number of Palestinians killed by Israelis during that same period about 6,000.
Israel uses 73% of the water available from West Bank aquifers, West Bank Jewish settlers use another 10% and West Bank Palestinians are left with 17%. Israelis get about 350 liters of water per person per day while Palestinians get 70 liters--less than the 100 liter minimum standard of the World Health Organization.
But hey, the Israelis are the good guys, right??
The U.S. is going to lose the UN "veto" power by misusing it so much to cover Israel's violent ass. Once the world re-aligns after Peak Oil and the ditching of the US dollar and US hegemony, Israel is in for a VERY rude awakening by the new global Institutions.
This time around, Israel bet on an aging Goliath. It won't end well for them.
The sliming of Goldstone's report, and the sliming of Goldstone's overall ability, probity, and reputation implied by this unsurprising but scurrilous response from the US-Israel rogue-state hegemony brings to mind the similar treatment of Judge Lawrence Walsh, the independent counsel in charge of the Iran-Contra investigation.
Walsh is an old-school Republican conservative; like Goldstone, he has a reputation for being able, diligent, principled, and scrupulously impartial.
Both men were really put on the spot, in virtually a "no-win" situation, and both remained true to themselves and their reputations and did not succumb to criticism or external influence.
In Walsh's case, he caught flak from both ends of the political spectrum-- because, of course, he could easily have been just another whitewasher content to go through the motions and come to the least controversial conclusions.
But the unkindest cuts of all came from the Republican wingnuts. Remember, the subjects of Walsh's investigations were prize specimens like Admiral Poindexter and Ollie North-- the latter was regarded as a hero by the wingnuts, and maybe still is.
In my lifetime, it really doesn't make sense to speak of a "high road" in national politics. At best, our Elected Misrepresentatives talk a good game and draw rainbows in the empty air.
But even given that the low road is the only road through town, the Republicans turned on Walsh and, as usual, engaged in wanton demagoguery entirely at Walsh's (and justice's) expense to capture the support of the reactionary lumpen wingut/yahoo classes: the mob.
As we all know, the rascals got off the hook, and Walsh got hung out to dry.
I truly wish the Honorable Judge Goldstone a better fate!

The US unfortunately is a big blowhard and a complete apologist for Israel. It won't be able to respond to judge Goldstone because it can't. Its comments on the Goldstone Report were just automatic drivel as usual.
Israel becomes more like Nazi Germany everyday.
My advise to Goldstone is: don't hold your breath waiting for that explanation from the US. If nothing else, the US has learned a good trick from Israel of throwing the mud around as fast and far as it can and hope that it sticks. One the seed of doubt has been planted, all they have to do is sit back and watch it grow. There are no need for explanations, they've already done their job. What a whole bunch of sub-standard human beings they all are. Sickening! If this is what it's like to be Chosen, I thank the Darwin for being un-chosen.
alwaysamazed: Check out Jeff Gates: Guilt by Association, www.criminalstate.com. It is almost unbelievable and very disturbing. If anyone can prove his facts are incorrect, it might be the above observors. We are definitely on the, regrettable, unthinkable "right" track...

Goldstone is a very honest and brave man to stand up to the vitriol and b___s___ being pthrown at him.

Has anyone heard from the Palestinian professors, how bad is the state of their universities/colleges or have they been bulldozed and bombed to the stone age? Is there no voice at all from Palestine? Abbas it is now evident is a mere puppet of America. America for some strange reason has lost any moral compass and does not know right from wrong. If asked about issues like genetically modified food, clean water, environmental issues, pollution, weird science for marketing like baby formula, fast food, and the skyrocketing amount of military industrial spending. We know war and oppression is wrong but look, now have created three and accept Israel by giving them money and weapons, years of acceptance of its hostility and crimes. Obama blah is one very bad lie. I wish I had voted for Congressman Kucinich he might not have won but at least it would not have been a lie. We probably could right the wrong, stop the warring and give up oil. I know people who were designing electric cars in the '70s when every junior higher had an ecology backpack. We don't do it or are stuck in some time warp of oil and war and pollution and no new ideas. Really creationism?? we were debating creationism a couple years ago. I think professors are now quit because their funding is from oil, corporation or neocons.

You are right. I feel everyone should see this and they may realise :
1, how the US government plays two sides to the middle.
2, which explains why and how they promote and finance terrorism at home and around the world.
3, If you think after seeing this that Turkey has a handle on the powers Washington to cause havoc, further power, and wealth, by bribery, corruption and deceit, just imagine what Zionist Israel can do with its hooks also into Media, Military, and Finance, apart form government.
Perhaps, what the Turks learned is that if you want a handle on to power in the US to access the money and the weapons you have to bend over for the Zionists.
America the beautiful (ly f—ked).
Goldstone deserves much credit for his courageous standing up for the truth in a universe of corrupt sell outs.
What is the purpose of the Goldstone report? How will it be used? Does it lead to anything?
It seems to me that the UN produces such reports regularly, but no action is ever taken to apply pressure on the party that committed the majority of crimes. Without such action a report like Goldstone's is just pissing in the wind. Better not to have written it at all than to have it sit on a shelf to be scorned by Israelis or else held up like a tawdry banner by the Palestinians.
To paraphrase Judge Goldstone: have YOU read the report? It is available online. The UN investigates such things as Gaza & the request of a # of its members. When you have statistics that show a ratio of Gazan to Israeli dead at 100:1, who is going to present the truth of what happened? Certainly not the Israelis; they have not been willing to investigate their Operation Cast Lead themselves. I believe that the leadership of Hamas has agreed to investigate the accusations of war crimes against it. Is it better for the world to remain misinformed about the dark deeds perpetrated during Cast Lead?
If and how the report is acted upon remains to be seen. As an unequivocal supporter of Israel-right-or-wrong the US has already cast its first vote against the report in the Human Rights Council, but the report was agreed to nevertheless.
Next steps are the General Assembly and the Security Council, in the latter of which the US can veto the resolution to pursue the report. This is where politics come in and Israel, as it has many times before, may escape censure & worse because of being a buddy of Barack and friends.
Because of politics, the UN often proves to be a disappointing venue in which to settle international disputes. Right now, it's the best we have.
You are wrong on one thing: Israel did investigate itself and, of course, found itself to have the most moral army in the world. So, there!
If anything wrong was done (to which, of course, they don't admit), it wasn't their fault but the Palestinians'. It's a well-known fact that the firepower of a mighty US-made F-16 can't be compared with the devastation of a rock thrown by a Palestinian teenager.
Goldstone's comments are based on a flawed assumption: critics of the Goldstone report must present some substantive basis in support their criticism of the report. Goldstone is still living in the reality-based community.
We live in the world of public relations. When an empire, its elites, and its client states are involved, "we create our own reality" and shape public perceptions around this newly created reality. Inconvenient facts just get in the way and are ignored, or if that becomes impossible, those presenting them are ridiculed, attacked, sidelines, divided against themselves (e.g. Cointelpro), etc. The global climate change issue is one example (ignored for decades, then ridiculed and attacked), although in recent years these successive strategies are no longer working against global climate change as the masses have become too informed and upset.
So there is no reason for the attackers of the Goldstone report in the U.S. to refer to specific incidents in the report or to deal with its substance. It is better for American and Western audiences to present the report as a whole as simply beyond the pale, ridiculous, one-sided, "deeply flawed." The UN Human Rights Council is presented as either wide-eyed naive dreamers or anti-Israel and anti-American, whatever works better for the occasion or for the particular audience. To get into the specific facts would be counter-productive because that would provide too much information for the masses.

Quite frankly, anything said by the US or Israeli governments about anything should be considered a lie until it is proven true by independent means. That's how habitual liars are treated by society; both governments habitually lie, so they should be subjected to similar treatment. In this case, denials made by liars mean the accusations are true.

–Absolutely.
This is an axiomatic truism that is without exception: The pattern of lying is adamantine in its unwavering rigidity and totalitarian in its barbarous shamelessness. Worthy only of utter revulsion.
Goldstone bent over backwards in his excessively measured report– until his spine almost cracked– to appear 'professionally neutral.' It was still not enough to mollify the twin pillars of unrepentant 'state terror,' Israel and the United States.
It is admirable of Goldstone that he now attempts to 'challenge' and rebut the scabrous denials of the terrorists.

How about UN resolution 194 which article 11 states - (The General Assembly) Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or in equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible.
Israeli has never allowed any of this, therefore the UN should toss them out as this was signed in 1948. Theyve has 51 years to compensate the Palestinians .. I dont think theyre going to get around to it.
Israel's unwarranted vicious aggression against people it has enclosed in what is virtually a torture chamber called Gaza is the reason this report may appear somewhat "one sided".
There is no way any accurate assessment could appear otherwise.
Was there a similar report about Israel's vicious murdering and destruction in Lebanon a few years ago?
Of course, both of these assaults were overwhelmingly encouraged by the "government" of the United States of America.
"...in what is virtually a torture chamber called Gaza is the reason this report may appear somewhat "one sided". There is no way any accurate assessment could appear otherwise." –(Birdbrain Alley)
–An excellent point, and one which is often overlooked. The real truth of the intentional Israeli Gaza massacre–which is infinitely worse than the toned down–some say compromised Goldstone report–is more hideous yet.
All the paid and voluntary Zionist trolls will soon be crawling out on to this thread from their vampire caves. But it is far too late for their propaganda.
Their bilious and repulsive 'talking points' and attempts to muddy the waters with specious arguments and 'doubt,' are fruitless. Their disgusting efforts to suppress what is all but undeniable are admissible only as self-serving nonsense.
Hopefully, the time will come when it will be acknowledged that their claims have all the moral rigor of Holocaust denials. –(Jill Bains)
Israel has not recognized Palestinians as legitimate humans since 1948, and since this date Israel has emulated America's ruthless European forefathers, who stole land and exterminated North American Indians, with America's weapons, as our forefathers did with made-in-England canons.
Israel greedily demands land, the water under land, and the large oil deposit that sits off the coast of the West Bank. Its objective is to annihilate the Palestinians, who are the single greatest roadblock to Israel's acquisition of Gaza and the West Bank. Solution: cram 1.4 million Palestinians into 140 miles of Gaza, and keep them there, caged like animals, until their population smothers them. Under the Oslo Accords, Palestinians are not permitted to live on sixty percent of the West Bank, i.e., they are to slowly smother, and to starve.
Israel's best friends are the conservative evangelical Christians and the conservative Jews, or Zionists, who could not shed a tear if Israel targeted only babies, if Israel's troops raped every pre-pubescent Arab in the Middle East.
Israel is a nasty country. Europe and the U.S. donate weapons to Israel so that Israel can sell six spy planes to Russia and a flock of missiles to India.
Israel mocks the Torah and dishonors God as it rips Palestinians with shrapnel, embargoes, and starvation. Let us eulogize the Palestinians.
When departed Palestinians enter Heaven, they are approached by Chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, who greet them with one statement: "We know how you feel."
"...Israel has emulated America's ruthless European forefathers, who stole land and exterminated North American Indians, with America's weapons..."
–This is called the 'mirroring effect.'
Genocide is so familiar to white America that it recognizes a kindred soul in Israel and sees it as a continuance of itself.
This explains why white, Christian America is so forgiving and supportive of a people whom they actually hate: It perversely absolves them of their own racist and genocidal crimes. There is comfort to be had in a shared complicity of horror. –(Jill Bains)
Good points. The parallels between the US -- Native American Indian genocide and the Israeli -- Palestinian genocide rarely get mentioned.
How did Israel get such a death-grip on the gov't of this country? For decades now, I have watched one admin. after another kiss the behind of the Israeli regime, allowing them free rein to harass and butcher the Palestinian people. It is a national shame, and I had hoped that President Obama would put a stop to their crimes. All he has to do, is cut off all aid to Israel and tell them it will be reinstated as soon as a just peace is established with the Palestinians. Continuing to ignore the war crimes of the Israeli gov't, is against the security interests of the United States, and only isolates us from the rest of the world.

It's not the whole story, but I get the feeling that the influence that the Israeli Gov't has on the usa has much to do with the nutty xtian fundies who believe that there is a requirement that a State of Israel must be in existence for their Christ to return. The rest of the story has to do with the area being a prime location to test new weapons on human targets.

Indeed!
A fine comment worthy of the saturnine consciousness at its most maleficent. Grimly truthful.
Israel is nothing if not a giant off shore American military base. Little more than a 'laboratory' for war crimes, armament and munitions testings–including chemical warfare– and unrepentant state terror.
Having so efficiently internalized Nazi methodologies, it now finds itself in a position to externalize them; not in hopes of expiation, but only out of the expediency that comes with such inimical familiarity with terror.
In truth, this is even worse than the Nazi's, as given the indelible memory and the gravity of that experience as victims, one would have assumed– incorrectly–that such unconscionably lessons would have been 'unlearned.'
As the Goldstone Report testifies, such was not to be the case.

Eeep. I was not aware of that definition when I chose my username... I was thinking of that marvelous festival of ancient Rome where you'd have a drunken orgy and whatnot during the winter Solstice.
Ooops, maybe I should change my username.
Lots of sites have called Goldstone's bluff, as has the Israeli government. It's been fisked to Uranus and back, shown again and again to be no more than inky toilet paper.
The question Jews face is, should they bother dealing with this blood libel? It's one in a long, long series. The enemies of Jews still parade around Mein Kampf and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion like they're the truth. They still long for the good old Spanish Inquisition days. The Goldstone Report was never about the truth, it was always about slandering Israel. Check the resolutions passed by the UNHRC; they specifically state that the report is for proving Israeli crimes. The conclusion was forgone.
Perhaps the better answer is to tell the accusers to go screw themselves.
Goldstone is challenging Obama to do point out the so called flaws. Why don't you beat him to the task? What are the flaws in the report that you say is "toilet paper."
I've seen the numbers of Palestinian people killed by Israel. I've also seen the relative numbers of Israeli deaths, a small fraction of the former. I've seen the historical maps showing the brutal take over of land that by international law belongs to Palestine, which is now reduced to a tiny fraction of what is legally theirs. I have heard Alan Dershowitz debate with Norman Finklestein. I was horrified by Dershowitz' lame arguments. And now this attempt to trash a UN Human Rights report. SHAMEFUL.
How did this theft and subsequent massacre take place? The U.S. and Israel's military might, that's how. Might makes right! The weakest always lose and if there is a fight back, the weak get massacred as a powerful lesson. Haven't we noticed?
"Everbody has to move, run and grab as many hilltops as they can ... Everthing we don't grab will go to them." Ariel Sharon, 1998 --- and so they did.
"We'll make a pastrami sandwich of them .... so that in 25 years time, neither the United Nations, nor the United States, nobody will be able to tear it apart." Ariel Sharon 1973 to Churchill 111 ---- and so they did.
Israel is in violation of 65 UN resolutions, Palestinians in violation of NONE. An occupied country has rights under international law, they are allowed to defend themselves and their land from theft.
I used to want to go to Israel, visit the Kibbutz, the beautiful, green hillsides, the lovely people. I was ignorant. Now I realize that everything I heard and read from Israel is a big lie. They are their own worst enemy and will destroy themselves in the end.
I notice that someone "flagged" DaMiddleRoad's comment. Why?
It's clearly a angry adolescent rant, entirely without merit. It doesn't even follow the typical hasbarist formula of loading up with falsehoods and bad arguments to justify Israel's rogue-state systematic perpetration of crimes against humanity.
It's an ignorant and worthless comment, but it serves to prove the bitter emptiness common to rogue-state supporters. I don't think it helps to merely "disappear" such obscenities.

Yes, I could not agree more. The bilious idiocy of the comment is so flagrant that it intrinsically provides the means of its own mockery and contains its own demise. A text book example of self-immolation.
This is much like the recent troll infestation which has plagued this site on numerous other threads.
We now have the absurd situation on this site where trolls attack trolls to provide themselves cover and throw others off their track.
Ever more ludicrous 'trollings'– so maladroit they are laughable– where multiple troll personas even attack themselves under revolving aliases in ridiculous attempts to conceal their own sociopathy. One may arguably say such sophomoric juvenilia is pollutive, and indeed it is. but it should not be flagged. It is so pathetically transparent that it effectively lays bare "the bitter emptiness" of such petty sadists.
It only results in a grotesque self ridicule. The same as the comment by DaMiddleRoad does here.

How do you know it wasn't self flagged?

Blood libel? Unlike the other examples you gave - of real blood libels - the Goldstone report is backed up by facts. Note, the Goldstone report doesn't blame all Jews for the actions of the Israeli Government. Hasn't the government of Israel claimed for the last 60+ years that they are not in fact a 'Jewish' government, but that they are a democracy that has many ethnic groups living within Israel?
Re DaMiddleRoad October 22nd, 2009 12:06 pm, who suggests
"Perhaps the better answer is to tell the accusers to go screw themselves."
Zionists have been telling everybody to do exactly that since 1947, since there can be no interference with the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Why the US continues to be complicit with it is another question.
As to the factual basis for the report, it seems to me to have gone far out of its way to be even-handed; there is simply no valid comparison between the gleeful mayhem committed by the IDF and the few inaccurate and ineffective rocket attacks attributed by Israel to Hamas (at least some of which were almost certainly false-flag ops). Yet the report presents both sides as equally culpable, even though the UN Charter explicitly grants the right of resistance to an occupied people, while prohibiting the establishment of colonies in occupied territory.

Knee jerk pandering -- no substance necessary when you are groveling to the Israeli lobby. Obama again proves he is just like any other typical American politician -- without an ounce of integrity or shame.
Good for Goldstone for calling attention to the blatantly obvious.
I guess Obama needs to ask Rahm Emmanuel son of Irgun , what he should do next.
I suspect this is all too close to the truth.

I think the last question and answer are the keys. Having friends in America and its government as an collaborator held by the “sort and hairies”, may have served the purpose of the Zionists to keep the calls for justice for the Palestinian people at bay for a while, but now that the Israeli Government has become the siege master of the Gaza ghetto, the criminal killer of women and children, the user of white phosphorus and experimental weapons and the purveyor of meaningless propaganda phrases in response to orderly documented evidence of war crimes, the gig is up, whether AIPAC or Obama’s little Zionist helpers like it or not.
At the end of the interview:
AJ : Is this eventually a matter for international jurisdiction..?
Goldstone: “Well I think Israel is aware of that. I think that’s where it is going. If they don’t do a good faith internal investigation this thing is not going to lie down and die. It is going to continue.”
I've been waiting for someone to call the US and Israeli bluff on their accusations of bias.
The zionists especially have never been able to substantiate such an accusation whether directed at Goldstone or any of the many human-rights organizations who have criticized the irresponsible behvior of the IDF.
