'World Must Move in a New Direction,' Obama Tells UN
UNITED NATIONS - Is the United States willing to give up its role as the world's most powerful cop? The message delivered by U.S. President Barack Obama to the U.N. General Assembly suggests that it's quite likely.
US President Barack Obama urges world leaders to move in a new direction saying they "must embrace a new era of engagement" in his first speech to the annual UN General Assembly. (AFP/Emmanuel Dunand) "Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside," Obama told world leaders at the 192-member Assembly's 64th session, which commenced here at the world body's headquarters in New York Tuesday.
"Each society must search for its path, and no path is perfect. Each country will pursue a path rooted in the culture of its people, and in the past," he said, amid loud applause from the audience comprising more than 100 heads of state and government.
Addressing the General Assembly, Obama made it clear that he would tread a different path regarding his country's role in world affairs and that his administration was ready to embrace multilateralism in order to address crucial issues facing the world.
"The time has come for the world to move in a new direction. We must move in a new era of engagement based on mutual interests and mutual respect, and our work must begin now," he said, acknowledging the fact that in the past the U.S. has "acted unilaterally".
That anti-U.S. sentiment has also served as "an excuse for our collective inaction", he added.
"This body has often become a forum for playing politics and exploiting grievances rather than solving problems," Obama said. "After all, it is easy to walk up to this podium and to point fingers and stoke divisions."
In his speech, Obama, who is a former professor of U.S. constitutional law, criticised the world body's General Assembly for devoting more time during the annual debate to "bickering" rather than being pro-active to solve crucial issues at hand.
"Nothing is easier than blaming others for our troubles," he said. "Anyone can do that... In an era when our destiny is shared, power is no longer a zero-sum game. No one nation can or should try to dominate other nation."
In Obama's view, the traditional division between nations of the south and north makes no sense in "an interconnected world, nor do alignments of nations rooted in the cleavages of a long gone cold war."
Though pleased with the fact that the new U.S. leader is willing to act differently, many leaders from the developing countries who spoke before the General Assembly offered different views on crucial issues facing the world and called for specific actions.
"Developed countries should open their markets to developing countries and reduce or exempt tariffs. They should honour their commitments on debt relief and official development assistance," said Hu Jin Tao, president of China.
Like Obama, Hu also emphasised the need for multilateralism in order to address the issues of global concern, but in a different way.
"We should be more tolerant to one another and live together in harmony," he said. "Mutual learning and tolerance among different civilisations is an inexhaustible source of strength for social progress. All countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor are equal."
On Monday, both Obama and Hu made strong commitments on fighting global warming and have indicated that they would also work closely with regard to discussions on the U.N. agenda on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament, which are due to start Thursday.
For his part, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva expressed similar views on mutual cooperation and multilateralism, but expressed concerns about the pace at which the developing world is able to assume its due share in solving global issues.
"Poor and developing countries must increase their share of control in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank," he said. "Otherwise there can be no real change and the peril of new and greater [financial] crises will be inevitable."
Lula also reiterated the developing countries' demand for U.N. reforms and raised questions about its undemocratic structure in maintaining global peace and security, because five of the fifteen members have more say in decision-making than the rest.
"Sixty-five years later, the world can no longer be run by the same rules and values that prevailed at the Bretton Woods Conference," he told delegates. "Likewise, the U.N. and its Security Council can no longer be run under the same structures imposed after the Second World War."
Lula's call for reforms of the world's leading financial institutions was fully supported by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "We need to reform the IMF and the World Bank," said Sarkozy. "Voting rights need to be more equitably distributed between countries."
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who spoke at the Assembly on behalf of the 27-member European Union, held similar views on this issue and said that the E.U. was determined to promote global financial stability and sustainable world recovery.
In his speech, Obama identified four major issues that need the utmost attention of the world community. Obama's list included issues related to nuclear disarmament, peace and security, climate change and global economy.
The U.S. president assured full cooperation of his country with the U.N. in its attempts to address these issues.
"The United States stands ready to begin a new chapter of international cooperation - one that recognizes the rights and responsibilities of all nations," he told delegates. "With confidence in our cause, and with a commitment to our values, we call on all nations to join us in building the future that our people deserve."
Obama was silent about the issue of U.N. reforms.

Show AllWhen Obama and the UN brings Israel's illegal nuclear and WMD arsenal into the list of "named" proliferators we the people of this world directly threatened by the imbalances and global instability caused and maintained through the unjust use of force and threat of global carnage; only when Obama and his administration stop applying double standards might we try to believe any sincerity in his words that "All countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor are equal." Until then it is just rhetoric.
Perhaps he is referring more to the equality of opportunity in disaster capitalism!
exactly.
what obama is NOT saying out loud for fear of ACTUALLY , LITERALLY , being LAUGHED AT in his speech to the world - and THEN LITERALLY be SEEN by americans who are themselves HOPING that the "american leadership" won't EXPOSE THEMSELVES to be the EMBARRASSMENT of a culture and society that americans KNOW DEEP DOWN they really are for the way they have allowed themselves to BEHAVE as a nation and Empire but WON'T ADMIT openly - is
for the world to CONTINUE TO BELIEVE in the USA's "capitalism" Dogma....even if it has been DEMONSTRATED the world over - and for generation after generation - INCLUDING the WARS , FAMINES, and RESENTMENTS that it has Engineered and Engendered and Cultivated
for the DISASTER that it really is!
that's what he's really trying to NOT SAY OPENLY because it would be like a THIEF and MURDERER openly asking everyone, his own victims and their families to CONTINUE to
"invite" HIM to their homes and streets and neighborhoods!
it is really the POTUS level EQUIVALENT of Timothy Geithner
going to Beijing -- trying to persuade the chinese to continue buying US treasuries ..while NOT protecting THEIR domestic industries from US corporations ....
obama is the POTUS equivalent of trying to persuade the WORLD to do the same thing ...
and BOTH are the SAME THING:
they and the USA are NOW
without saying out LOUD
BEGGING the WORLD to be given another "chance" to continue their dastardly , hypocritical Imperium Building
as they see it collapsing and no longer ABLE to effectively play its old intimidation games and legerdemains and bait and switches and tactics of "isolation" of "recalcitrant" "bad guys".
and WHY?
it's because IT's THE USA that has been exposed as the REAL BAD GUY of BAD GUYS -
ALL ALONG!!!
and the world is seeing right through it -- as it really had already anyway -- BUT
is more ABLE to IGNORE the USA's demands - because the USA's DUG its OWN HOLES and CAN"T EXTRICATE ITSELF
without THEIR MERCY!
Obama says the UN needs a new direction. He says that the US cannot do it alone. Democracy cannot be imposed. And yet the US is doing everything it can to not help it. The US direction means that it wants the other countries to help the US steal more natural resouces from the world. It wants to impose (anti) democracy US and ISrael style. The US is being laughed at at the UN!
of course US Mainstream Media reports Emphasize how obama was APPLAUDED by the MAJORITY...while certain "bad guys" "behaved boorishly" ...
of course what Obama really means about "new direction" is the same as his "CHANGE"....
"the world must move in a new direction -- WhERE THE USA goes"
which is of course
he says "THE USA CAN NOT DO IT ALONE"
so the USA NEEDS PROPPING UP ...to STAY "on course" in
its DISASTROUS DISASTER ECONOMICS, DISASTROUS WARMAKING, DISASTROUS ENEMY CREATING, DISASTROUSLY "VERY VERY VICIOUS SYSTEM OF EXPLOITATION THAT DEHUMANIZES and ENSLAVES PEOPLE EVERYWHERE" (john perkins, former cia economic hitman).
THAT"S what obama really means.
problem is -- he is trying to MARKET the USA DISASTROUSLY FAILED MODEL to the WORLD that KNOWS EXACTLY what the USA has
SPREAD -- DISASTER --
and he idiotically believes he can FOOL everyone at the same time - all the time -- just coz.....
"we're america".......
doesnt he KNOW that America's GAME of Bait and Switch for Empire is OVAH? and that it is just a MATTER of time the rest of the world is waiting for as they shore up their DEFENSES against the American Imperium's collapse creating waves of destruction SO THAT THEY CAN REALLY GO AHEAD with the BUSINESS of existing without FURTHER MEDDLING by the US Imperium?
Obama is trying to STILL COERCE the rest of the world to "gather thee around US , america"?
he is STILL trying to convince the world the USA is the "Shining city on the hill?"
what a LAUGH!
The very best thing that can happen to the U.S., and the world, is for America to keep right on doing what it is doing, and eventually collapse under the weight of its own hubris, greed, selfishness, hypocrisy, and evil. After the smoke has cleared, tens of millions of American sheeple that used to "have it all" and wave "God Bless America" banners but now are faced with starvation and homelessness, will finally see just how false and wicked their beloved American exceptionalism truly was. Not all - but a lot of them.
THEN - and ONLY then - will the U.S. have a shot at rejoining the community of nations, the rule of law, global responsibility, and a chance to again be seen as an equal partner with the best interest of humanity in mind- not just America - instead of a rogue, hypocrital bully.
Sometimes you have to put your hand on the stove and get burned before you realize how hot it is.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
Sinclair Lewis, "It Cant Happen Here", 1935
this talk from Obama and the USA about how the world has to keep circling around the USA for "direction" is really getting VERY VERY OLD...as the usa keeps doing the very things that dissolves ANY reason , which it NEVER earned and were NEVER justified to begin with all these centuries anyway, to keep "giving" the USA as Obama and the USA demands and expects.
"leadership?"
the USA was NEVER about "leadership"...it was always about IMPOSING its will to render other nations WEAKENED and VULNERABLE - which it calls variously as "free market", "globalization", "trade", "efficiency", "accountability", etc. - in order for the USA to
practice "our foreign policy which has always been designed to gather as much of the world's resources unto ourselves at the expense of other nations and the true purpose of our Armed Forces is to make the world safe for our Supernationalistic Capitalism and our cultural and economic Assault" (GENERAL SMEDLEY BUTLER, US MARINES)...
who is Obama and the USA trying tO FOOL some more?
the WORLD? which NO country on earth has VICTIMIZED and ROBBED MORE than the USA?!
he must be dreaming in that bubble land he calls the USA still..just like the Bubble Economy would do.
"the Trouble with US americans is....if our DOLLAR can't buy more than 6 % of its value at home...WE get uneasy and we go abroad so it can buy 100% more..and where the DOLLAR goes, our flag follows, where the flag goes, our army follows...we are a RACKETEER NATION...i will have nothing more to do with it......it is EVIL" ...GEneral Smedley Butler.
the USA is like "JASON" in the movie series "HALLOWEEN"
trying to come back again and again and again.......
with that SILLY mask of "benevolence and freedom" ..this time - it's a "black president" and BEHIND the mask
is the SAME OLD MURDEROUS , EXPLOITATIVE, MANIPULATIVE , SELFISH ,VENGEFUL , WARLOVING and GREEDY EMPIRE.
Talk is cheap. Let's see what happens. If nothing changes, nothing changes. The elephant in the room is Iraq/Afghanistan
and Israel's role in the Mideast.
Deepa
Isn't it absurd that THE ROGUE NATION asking the world to "move in a new direction"?
Obama and the country that he represents are simply in self-denial. They should first look at their face in the mirror.
They should look at their blood-soaked hands, and evil and vicious hearts.
basically OBAMA is the USA's "representative" to the world that says, melifluously and in honeyed words:
"Permit us to RAPE you some more".
whenever the USA "leads" or exhorts other nations as "allies" to "sanction and isolate" some country that doesn't SPREAD its legs to the USA...
what the USA really does is coerce other nations to "hold her down...pull her skirt up...pull her panty down...and stuff her mouth...while I RAPE HER".
that's what the USA really does whenever it "leads".
it is a leader in GANGRAPE...by intimidating other nations to "hold down" another nation...so the USA can do its "deed".
it is GANG RAPE leadership that obama is demanding from the world.
"Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside," Obama told world leaders at the 192-member Assembly's 64th session.
Really? So does that mean the U.S. will be leaving Iraq? LOL of course not.
Hollow words dripping with lies. I will give Obusha credit where it is due, however: he is a HELL of an orator. That is the only reason he is the President; that, coupled with the fact that the huge army of his lemming-like followers and apologists are so easily-swayed by a silk tongue that they care not a whit that their idol's actions are in direct contradiction with his words, without fail.
I no longer listen to Obama. I grow tired of the never-ending lies, as the rest of the world is growing also. No matter how much honey he applies to the shit coming out of his mouth, it is still shit.

i just hear a snippet of his rhetoric over the radio ..something about "nations can no longer expect to DOMINATE other nations".......
i'm SURE he knows how hypocritical that sounds...but ...NEVERMIND.........

It's time for the big guy to put his money where his mouth is. To put up or shut up.
"Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside."
All right, then, time for troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and everywhere else to pack up and go home.
However much the world and it's people may be angry with the US and its policies, its important to remember that the majority did not elect Bush, neither in 2001 or 2004. The coup of 2000 and the quickly occurring trade center disaster allowed the coup leaders of the Bush regime an opportunity to trample the desires of sovereign nations, environment protocols and world institutions.
I am not American, however, I do recognize that the entire nation and its people cannot be expected to shoulder the blame for the zealots, warmongers, capitalists and self serving politicians in power. It is the unfortunate reality of the democratic system we live within. Here in Canada we continue to live under the shadow of a Bush style regime with its policies steeped in fear, greed and its undying thirst for power. A small majority of the nation have been allowed to rule the majority through the not so uncommon bickering and inability of the supposedly progressives to work together, and specifically I mean the left, whether it be the Green party or here in Canada the NDP. If we continue to split the vote we will continue to be flanked by the right.
Obama after all is human and has as I am certain everyone could agree been handed a terrible mess to deal with, what with two wars, the worst recession since the 30's and a powerful group of religious zealots, backwards hillbilly racists and an under educated mostly poor and sick inward thinking population to deal with.
Why is it important for the supposed progressives to bash every attempt, every policy shift, and every statement with negative commentary and vitriolic rhetoric. I have never before written on this forum, not through all the Bush years, now however, I feel I have no choice but to call attention to what appears to be unfair assumptions being forwarded towards Obama.
If we hope to see change then we need to act out of change and not from fear, anger or greed.
Thinking Out Loud, your arguments do not hold water. The policy direction of this current administration is henceforth clear. Not only will Obama not reverse the illegal Bush administration's rapacious policies, he is continuing and in some cases (Pakistan, Columbia) expanding them. Only on Israel has he displayed an inflection of difference, much to my surprise. But, guess what? So far, he has not demonstrated the resolve to make those changes stick. Netan-Yahoo has been walking all over the guy. So, there too, we're left with the same old savagery and stupidity. All people are saying on these threads is that they're not fooled by the fancy rhetoric, and that actions speak much louder than words. I think all these people, like myself, want nothing more than to cheer on some positive developments, any positive developments. The problem is that there haven't been any. If you think only Canadians are continuing to "live under a Bush-style regime," you haven't been paying attention to Obama's America. But make no mistake (as the big guy himself would say): I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong. A good place to start would be to end Bush's illegal wars and erase the disgrace of the illegal military installations the US has built in Babylon.
Clovis, what aspect of politics dont you get!
What did you expect, the new administration, whoever it was, to within months of coming to power simply reverse all the policies Bush and his cronies took eight years to inflict upon us. It's pie in the sky thinking, we would be lucky if the present administration were able to reverse half of all Bush's mess within two terms!
Politics just does not function that way.
You need to get your head out of the sand and look at the progressives measures already begun, like health care reform (which you would better serve your country by getting out in the streets and supporting, loudly!)or the reversal of the missile shield in Eastern Europe, or the move towards greening the US economy or the fact whether any of us like it or not, the US is still going to lead the world, either into the abyss or into a new and positive future. That is just the way it is.
Did you think Obama would simply call back the troops from their illegal foreign invasions as soon as he took his oath of office, have you even bothered to reflect on the other power structures of the USA, like the Pentagon, the military industrial complex and all the other fat cats making a fortune out of those wars. Its no simple task my friend, time is a necessary component of change.
Look, I don't actually think Obama is some type of saint that will make everything better and change the power structures of the world, but unless you have someone better in mind, tow the line and help correct all the wrongs the USA has perpetrated upon the world by supporting what potential you have.
Obama needs support from those of you who have the brains to think out loud, not the venom you are spitting!
You're the one who needs to get your head out of the sand. I don't want any part of Obama's health-care "reform", which is merely a gift to the insurance lobby. When he starts talking single-payer, then I'll start listening.
And I don't accept any of your "pragmatic" arguments for Obomber's inability to withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan. The U.S.'s occupation of those lands is an outrage to common decency. If he had any semblance of a spine, we would be starting withdrawal right now. Yesterday, in fact. When it came time to withdraw from Vietnam, Richard Nixon did it in a hurry. Obama, unfortunately, still defers to the powers that want all those American bases in the Middle East and South Asia. So much the worse for the world
And what do you make of Obomber's six new bases in Columbia? Freedom on the march?
You say the "U.S. is still going to lead the world." Let's hope not, or the world will be soon heading off a cliff, to quote Gen. Anthony Zinni. What you, and many Americans don't get, is that we need to change the very definitions of our polity. The present system is bankrupt. Unlike you, much of the rest of the world realizes this. Europe, it's true, is still lagging in this respect. Once they see the abyss before them, however, it may be a different story. Already Sarkozy, perhaps the top U.S. shill in Europe, is getting exasperated with the Obama administration's continued (and actually hypocritical) paeans to the "magic of the marketplace."
Obomber is a shill for the status quo. That much is clear. And what I say is not venom. It is the truth. And it is ambrosia compared to the poison that American savagery, greed, and blindness is spreading around the world. Take off your blinders, for heaven's sake.
Crucially, Obama has to know how the ambiguous US stance on Honduras is a dagger pointing to his heart. It leaves his lofty promise of a new relationship between the US and Latin America in tatters. Worse still, it unveils how helpless he is facing his - in theory - subordinates at the Pentagon and the State Department, no to mention vast reactionary forces across the US for whom multilateralism means a surrender to "socialism" and to America's enemies.
As American political activist, author and lecturer Noam Chomsky has pointed out, Central America is still traumatized by the "Reaganesque terror" of the 1980s. In a wider context in Latin America, the US used to exert control either by hardcore violence, direct or indirect, or by applying an economic stranglehold. This belongs to the past - as much as coup lovers in the Pentagon may regret it.
Coups, anyway, are far from gone. The Bush administration tried (and failed) in Venezuela in 2002; now Washington engages in subversion/propaganda via an extensive media network and National Endowment for Democracy-style support for the disgruntled local oligarchies. In Haiti, both France and the US got rid of the government and sent the president to South Africa. Honduras is a more complex case. The International Monetary Fund has just approved an enormous loan to Honduras - which will cover for the lack of direct US "assistance".
Most of all, the US role in Honduras is a Pentagon-playing-the-New Great Game matter. The coup is intimately linked to ongoing remilitarization of Latin America - from the reactivation of the dormant Fourth Fleet to the installation of seven new military bases in Colombia. (See US's 'arc of instability' just gets bigger, September 3, Asia Times Online.)
In pure Pentagonese, Honduras under Zelaya fell under the good old Cold War domino theory. The government had to go because it was linked to ALBA, which means Nicaragua and, above all, Venezuela. Chavez is playing a high stakes New Great Game - he just bought US$2 billion in weapons from Russia at a time when Moscow wants access to the Orinoco oil wealth, and he is also doing energy megadeals with China. The Pentagonese response is an array of bases in Colombia to monitor him. Now Zelaya's move to the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa introduces an even juicier element.
Last December, Brazil struck a strategic military partnership with France - involving a multibillion-dollar purchase of submarines, helicopters and jet fighters - with full technology transfer included. Lula is privileging the French over Boeing - and obviously the US industrial-military complex is not amused. Brazil projects power independently from the US and France in South America. This is all about multilateralism in action - of the kind reactionary forces in the US simply abhor.
Brazil is a key G-20 member at the Pittsburgh summit - the largest economy in Latin America, swinging its way towards great power status, and still a key ally and trading partner of the US. Brazil may not solve the crisis in Honduras. But Lula - whom Obama immensely respects - may convince him it's time to finally come clean, and side with the people of Honduras.
This might do wonders for Obama's global credibility - especially now that he has seemingly backed down on his demand for a freeze on Israeli settlements on the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (See Netanyahu and Obama: Who's fooling who?, Asia Times Online, September 24)
Were Obama not to make his move, the impression would remain that if he can't even control his own reactionary/militarist backyard in Washington, not to mention Latin America, how will he face up to Russia and China on the global stage?

Right on, Teddy. Are you Pepe Escobar?
oh - nooooo
please don't mistake ME for Pepe Escobar - he is the writer, i just posted his excellent articles . i can't possibly have that kind of experience or knowledge as he has.
but he is someone that REALLy travels RIGHT deep into the regions he talks about...and sees them from the ground.
i have read him for years, as well as other writers in asiatimesonline - like Henry CK Liu, Goldman, Mogambu Guru, etc..
those are guys that really give you the HARD FACTS of things. right down to what "silver, or copper, or Forex" etc...are about...
with Pepe Escobar's writings such as "PIPELINISTAN"..."GLOBALISTAN"...those are the really erudite, fact -laden reporting that i can't possibly have...
but I feel that they are the exposes and explanations and even confirmations of what MY own simplistic suspicions over the years were about:
that I alway suspected that USA "always wanted RUSSIA as a trophy" ....thus more than a decade later from when I used to argue with friends about it -- we DO see the USA "encircling russia"...
i always suspected the USA wants to keep CHINA from rivalling it - thus we see today how the USA tries to "escalate" war to PUSH IT to china's borders....at the pretext of "war on terror" -
I always suspected the USA was going to MILITARIZE africa....and we see THAT right now with its "AfricaCOM"...also under pretext of "humanitarianism and democracy"
I always suspected that the USA MAINTAINED an attitude of "south america is our backyard" - THUS we see it placing 7 more military camps in Colombia to "watch venezuala" and try to eventually destablise ...
i always suspected there was something VERY wrong about this DOLLAR "power" over the globe...it was so artificial sounding...and THUS we see the exposure of the Dollar Hegemon through its BANKING FAILURES
MINE over the years were just "rough" misapprehensions...
but these writers basically give substance to what I , and i think millions and billions already sensed or knew.
it was just a matter of the USA exposing itself through its actions so it can no longer HIDE behind its CLAIMS of "democracy"
"democracy and capitalism ARE ONE"
etc....

THE ROVING EYE
The president is in the trunk
By Pepe Escobar
An historical irony has placed little Honduras at the eye of the volcano in both the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the Group of 20 (G-20) meeting in Pittsburgh this week - even though United States corporate media would rather focus on Libyan Muammar Gaddafi and the tribulations of his traveling tent. [1]
As much as the 2008 financial crisis exposed the economic fallacy of US-propelled neo-liberalism, the June 28 oligarch-directed military coup in Honduras has exposed the fallacy of the
Barack Obama administration's pledge to uphold democratic values around the world. Stolen elections in Afghanistan? We don't like it, but ... Military coup in Honduras? We don't like it, but ...
What passes for official US policy at the G-20 consists of telling big exporting powers such as China, Germany and Japan to engage in an orgy of consumption (as the US used to) while vaguely promising the US will finally boost savings. Fat chance.
As for Honduras, this is now the Obama administration's hour of truth: will it finally come clean and follow world opinion - also expressed by the UN, the European Union and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) - in condemning and isolating the coup plotters?
The stick, or deafening silence
Deposed, rightful Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has been to Washington no less than six times since the coup. Not once was he allowed to meet Obama. Then, this past Monday morning, Zelaya showed up at the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras' capital, after a spectacular run that started in Nicaragua, involved a flight to El Salvador on a plane offered by Venezuela, and a 15-hour odyssey across the border to Honduras on foot and by car, evading myriad checkpoints manned by local intelligence - which is, crucially, funded, trained and maintained by the Pentagon. Zelaya was smuggled into the Brazilian Embassy in the trunk of car.
Zelaya may have had help from Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, under the umbrella of the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas (ALBA). But now the strategic game-changer has been to shift the attention towards Brazil - and that means under the UNASUR.
Whether Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva knew it before hand or only at the last minute (as the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists) is irrelevant. It was not the US that called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council this week; it was Brazil.
Lula forcefully demanded the restoration of democracy in Honduras in his speech at the UN General Assembly - with strong applause from the plenary. Obama's speech came right after Lula's. Not a word on Honduras. Obama spoke of a "new era of engagement" or at best an "inter-connected world" - while Lula spoke about the emergence of a real multilateral world; its subtext means the hyperpower does not have the monopoly anymore, be it on the word, the stick, or deafening silence.
Obama even stressed the US "can't fix it alone" - as if the war in Afghanistan and confrontation with Iran were global, and not only US, obsessions. (By the way: Lula met Iran's President Mahmud Ahmadinejad face-to-face for over an hour on the sidelines of the UN assembly. He later said that as much as Brazil had the right to develop its own peaceful nuclear program, so did Iran).
By Obama's own admission, the US can't fix Honduras alone, but at least it could have emitted the right signals, delegitimizing the coup politically, militarily, economically and diplomatically from the beginning.
So far, the US-dominated Organization of American States (OAS) has engaged in a pantomime negotiated by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias which calls for Zelaya's return as president, coup plotters integrated into the government, and amnesty for everybody, including installed coup President Roberto Micheletti.
This is ludicrous. It's as if in the (failed) George W Bush administration-supported 2002 coup against Chavez in Venezuela, the plotters would have been allowed to stay as his ministers.
Only the minimal Honduran oligarchy and the media they control support the coup. They have no social base. A communique by the National Front Against the Coup stresses that some businessmen and military who initially supported the plotters are now leaving the country. The coup plotters - emboldened by force, as if this was Latin America in the 1970s all over again - reverted to, what else, mass repression, a state of siege and tear-gassing everyone in sight.
What the majority of the people in Honduras want is their rightful president back in power and a constituent assembly, for which they are campaigning all around the country. Zelaya's own counter-coup has been to risk his life and install a government in exile - but not in exile, inside his own country - the ultimate nightmare of any dictatorship. For the coup plotters, there are only two endgames: unleash state terrorism or get out of Dodge and beg for asylum in Panama.
The Pentagon power play
Washington's glaring ambiguity is easily attributed to the ongoing, fierce internal war in the US. The true US supporters of the coup in Honduras are US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and the State Department. But even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been forced to back down. On Monday, she finally was forced to admit "the remainder of President Zelaya's term [is] to be respected".
Excellent, informative post, Teddy.
Oh, what lofty rhetoric! "a new direction" It sounds exciting doesn't it!!??
-"Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside"?????
Good God! I must stop now before I puke from the hypocrisy ;)
Who do Americans think they are kidding?
What Obama should have said is that "the U.S. must move in a new direction." Had he done so, the world would have hailed him as a hero.
We have to understand the world is heading into an entirely new direction - the energies of Aquarius, the age now beginning which will last 2,150 yrs, will not work with the old structures and ideologies of the past. Hardly any politician out there is perfect, but the declaration for America to embrace multi-lateralism is significant.
Cooperation on an international level is essential, and sharing of the world's resources can finally start to happen. Luckily, it's not Obama or any president who we have to wait on for such a giant transformation to begin.
Maitreya the World Teacher, you can be sure, is about to appear publicly. His task is enormous, but only he has the ability to galvanize billions into action, to demand a real multi-lateral framework. Meanwhile, I see these statements as important, even if it is only words at the moment. The thoughtform will keep spreading until more and more people are drawn into action.
Sounds the same to me - invest grow global.
The world is still recovering from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. In America, we see the engine of growth beginning to churn. To overcome an economic crisis that touches every corner of the world, we worked with the G-20 nations to forge a coordinated international response of over two trillion dollars in stimulus to bring the global economy back from the brink. We mobilized resources that helped prevent the crisis from spreading further to developing countries.
In Pittsburgh, we will work with the world's largest economies to chart a course for growth that is balanced and sustained. That means taking steps to rekindle demand, so that a global recovery can be sustained, a global economy that advances opportunity for all people. We will integrate more economies into a system of global trade. We will support the Millennium Development Goals, and approach next year's Summit with a global plan to make them a reality.
Growth will not be sustained or shared unless all nations embrace their responsibility. Our goal is simple: a globale economy in which growth is sustained. We will build the consensus to end conflicts and to harness technology for peaceful purposes; to change the way we use energy, and to promote growth that can be sustained and shared.
The world must stand together to demonstrate that international law is not an empty promise, and that Treaties will be enforced.
We mobilized resources that helped prevent the crisis from spreading further to developing countries.
=======
actually you are wrong .
the "developing world" namely - the majority of them in ASIA and SOUTH AMERICA - PRECEDED the "fix" of the countries running the global structure dictated according to the US norms - in taking the measures to PROTECT THEMSELVES from the ONGOING DEBACLE of the US INSPIRED crises .
in other words - BEFORE this "mobilized forces that helped prevent the crisis from spreading FURTHER TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES" was EVER even in the notebooks -
developing nations, such as in asia ALREADY took measures to WEAN THEMSELVES AWAY from teh VERY THING that caused the crisis.
ONE is:
that the asian region took the lead of CHINA in moving whatever savings and sovereign credits they have inWARD into DOMESTIC MARKET DEVELOPMENT ..and REGIONAL commerce and development - and THAT is what allowed the asian region (to be matched by the Brazil/Argentina/Venezuela south american region - to PREVENT the US INSPIRED CRISES from 'spreading further'.
THAT"S what Argentina first snubbing the World Bank and IMF for their demands of payment for USURIOUS "loans" and then eventually paying it off quickly after Argentina fixed the mess the IMF - WASHINGTON INSPIRED "prescriptions" created years ago...that's what Venezuala kicking out american control is about...that's what Brazil developing itself independently of american dictates is about...that
s what South American Trade and arrangements with asia and china is all about...that's what CuRRENCY PAYMENTS and transactions in YUAN and PESETAS rather than DOLLAR HEGEMONY is about...that's what Asian developing countries putting more resources INTO DOMESTIC MARKET and wage development is about.....
PROTECTING THEMSELVES from the AMERICAN LED exploitation and DEVASTATION of their economies .
and what ALLOWED them to BEGIN to move in THAT direction, FINALLY - even if just in its beginning stages - as SHOULD have been the case for decades already except that the USA and western imperialists managed to Coerce and intimidate those economies AGAINST their own interests - what allowed that THIS TIME Around - DOMESTIC DEVELOPMENT and NOT WASTING THEIR HARD EARNED savings and earnings and sovereign credit in SERVICING THE US DOLLAR - strengthening it artificially AGAINST their own interests and wages and labor and resources IS
the VERY FACT that THE USA can NO LONGER BE DEPENDABLE as the
"last resort of consumption" because of ITS own people's and system's over-dependence on CHEAP labor abroad and CHEAP resources abroad that IT has IMPOSED on other countries, the VERY ONES that are called "developing economies"...
andthose regions and countries are FORCED to FINALLY RECOGNIZE that THEY DON"T HAVE TO FEAR LOSING THE USA as the "main customer"
but that THEIR common welfare as regions and countries - ALL ALONG - RESTED in THEIR POWER to develop THEMSELVES WITHOUT being the USA"s "backyards"!!
and THAT is what the USA fears most and THAT is why the USA "leads" in "fixing the global economy" -- for FEAR that it is being gradually RENDERED IMPOTENT and UNNECESSARY for the development of OTHER nations!!!
in fact - the United States , under cover of "fixing the problem with SHARED responsibity"
wasn't EVEN the first to suggest "fixes" that actually began IN EUROPE while the usa dragged ITS feet (and continues to do so with its bailouts of banks and NOT paying attention TO deomstic development in terms of BETTER WAGES and FULL EMPLOYMENT programs) -
in fact the USA's so-called "shared responsibility" fixes is just another form of SPREADING THE DISEASE that the USA itself CREATED. they KNOW - oh they know that if there is ONE BIG VAMPIRE nation in the world -- it's NOT their next door neighbors whereever they are - it's THE ENTITY CALLED THE USA.
and IT'S the MOST DANGEROUS one on earth.
the developing regions, such as in asia - are ACHIEVING their survival of the crises and being the first to emerge FROM IT -
DUE TO THEIR OWN REGIONAL AND DOMESTIC development programsn and policies DESPITE what the USA has tried and continues to "share" -- which is :
ITS DISASTER ECONOMICS PRESCRIPTIONS. ASIA or south america, as developing regions have NOTHING TO OWE to the USA or western "fixes"
on the contrary it is the WEST and the USA that OWES THEM an EXPLANATION for why the USA INSPIRED policies are such FAILURES that NOW are EATING UP teh USA ITSELF! and why the usa should demand from THOSE regions
ANY "shared responsibility" for ITS IMPERIAL THEFT in THEIR economies that led to the disastrous effects caused BY the USA !
let's get that fact right.
"WE AMERICANS.....CAREFULLY NURTURE A STUDIED ATTITUDE OF INDIFFERENCE TO THE SUFFERING OF OTHERS.....EVEN IF *WE* ARE THE CAUSE OF IT".....AN AMERICAN POET.
in other words - what I AM saying is:
the world's "economy" and health RESTS NOT ON WHAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WANTS - and DOES -
it rests on what the OTHER regions want and DO.
and there's NOTHING the USA can do about it if it continues to WANT TO DOMINATE the globe. IT WILL BE ostracised gradually, it WILL be rejected in its MODEL and "Fixes".
and be FORCEd to behave in a world where countries realize that not only THEIR own survival and prosperity but everyone else's that goes right back to THEIR survival and prosperity
DEPENDS on economic fairness and justice and something the USA PREACHES but NEVER practiced :
a semblance of a LEVEL PLAYING FIELD . and the USA WILL have to "compete" in a REAL world of REAL "free trade"! MINUS its manipulations representative of ITS DESPERATIOn to hang on to being the globe's "EMPIRE FOREVER".......
which is such a tragically LAUGHABLE notion it has NEVER earned and is never even justified to begin with.
i mean -- if PEOPLE alone are to be recognized as in themselves the REASON for ANY economy to prosper - by sheer logic of their numbers for every single human being to be as fulfilled as he or she can be -
BY DEFINITION -- a country of 300 million people OUGHT NOT to wage such influence and power and gather such wealth unto itself at the expense of others.
BY DEFINITION and POTENTIAL of HUMAN CAPACITY - if all things were equal according to "each human being is important and unique" -
it is CHINA with its 1 billion 400 million people that OUGHT to be the world's greatest nation, PERIOD.
or the whole landmass of asia , or - all of africa ought to be "GREATER" in influence and wealth than the USA - etc. etc.
not this NONSENSE about some SINGLE country that self-proclaims itself as "more hardworking", "more enterprising" , "more responsible", "more law-abiding"
hypocrisy - claiming unto itself that fruits of the world's labor and resources to make itself the world's policeman, corporate warlord, financial "genius"..and master of ceremonies!
that's just silly and stupid - and not even mathematically sound!
HE HARDLY MENTIONED AFGHANISTAN.......
HOW "CLEVER"......HE WAS TRYING TO DO MAGIC IN FRONT OF THE GLOBAL AUDIENCE, PERHAPS....HOPING NO ONE WILL NOTICE THE GAP?
there is only one "NEW DIRECTION"
IT IS AWAY FROM THE USA MODEL OF DOING THINGS.
as far away as possible. and let the usa turn around and around in a CIRCULAR DIRECTION like a dog chasing its own tail .......trying to preserve its ZOMBIE MODEL of "civilization".
So far with Obama....its been all talk, little action and the actions taken....90% countrproductive.
An A for stopping the Missle Defense systems installation. Other than that, spending, political pay offs and proposals no one wants.
Grade so far D
It all starts with an idea and then words.
Never underestimate the power of words.
Oh, I don't underestimate it, Birdie. Just look at how a few honey-coated words from your savior put him in the White House. Or how every time he opens his mouth and spews a glop of runny honey-covered shit out of it, his apologists like you swoon and gasp and cream yourselves, never caring one whit that his ACTIONS are in fact the exact opposite of what he is saying.
Power, indeed.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
Sinclair Lewis, "It Cant Happen Here", 1935
"Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside," Obama told world leaders.
As if the ongoing impositions had anything whatever to do with democracy. In truth, what USA Incorporated seeks to impose on other nations by force of arms is the same version of "the love that dare not speak its name" that it has already imposed on its own citizens by other means.
The major difference, of course, is that many of those others actually have the discernment to see the deception for what it really is and the courage to resist.
I told friends of mine long ago , more than a decade ago ....
the USA has all the writings on the wall of being a fullblown Fascist country that will continue to show a "face" of democracy.
you already see it in the militarization of its own police forces under guise of "law and order" and "safety"...and "crime prevention".
you see if of course in its corporatism
and of course the wars to distract people from the knowledge and realization that THEY are themselves WARRED UPON by their own rulers..whether in their jobs from their "managers" or CEO's or their banks or their "mortgage houses" or their congress or their police or their other "laws" and institutions.
what I find IRONIC is this:
the CHINESE COMMUNIST PART is CLEARLY frightened of the Chinese PEOPLE - and so they know they are there ONLY at the tolerance of the chinese population who have a clear "unspoken understanding" of what their culture is about.
the AMERICAN "WAR CORPORATE PARTY" is AFRAID only of being collectively seen as the SOURCE of all the american people's troubles but NOT the american people for they KNOW that they have coerced americans into swallowing the CorporateHOOD america as part of their defintiion of what "america is all about".....
so long as that is the case -- the american people are now - the world's most FRIGHTENED people on earth.
I couldn't agree with you more.
And the thing to do when things go from bad to worse is to vamonos!
Don't forget that.
In the mean time...keep up whatever you are doing to shed light into the darkness.
No one said that it was going to be easy.
So keenly true.
We got a nice president -- I mean he's a good looking man, and he sure speaks well and that's a nice change from Dubya ... yeah, he talks so well and so much ... at times he even says the right thing. Rarely, though, does he do the right thing or anything at all, for that matter.
OBAMA - as the "face" of teh USA empire and ITS evil nature is the example of
"EVIL that has a beauteous visage".
beautiful on the outside, ROTTEN inside.
SPARKLING american "shining city on the hill"
Build on mounds and hills and mountains of EVIL work:
GENOCIDE of Native Indians, THEFT of lands , ENSLAVEMENT of africans and other colored people, DEBASEMENT of civicmindedness, EXPLOITATIOn and manipulation...
er.....aren't THOSE evil things waving in those Stars and Stripes "EMPIRE" forever?
and above all
"GOD BLESS AMERICA"
EVIL pretending as Benign
it is like the story of jesus being tempted by the Demon in the desert offering jesus the "rule of the earth"
IT"S EXACTLY the way the USA behaves. except that it even USES JESUS CHRIST as its "god and savior" to DO the evil deeds in the NAME OF GOD.
Most of the world is already moving in a new direction. This nation is one of the nations that isn't one of them. All this "change you can believe in" bs is already disappearing and the PUBLIC LAVA IS GROWING ! Obama had better start praying because patience in this country is wearing thin and the blue waters are boiling !
One of Obama's books is titled "The Audacity of Change." The title should be changed to "The Mendacity of Change."
Shut up, Obama. You've had your chance.
Clovis ------I think the Obama book you're referring to his 'The Audacity of Hope' -- also justifiably re-titled 'The Audacity of Bullshitting.'
Kudos on your 1:17pm post, though; it went to the heart of the matter:
"What Obama should have said is that "the U.S. must move in a new direction.""
Oops. Of course you're right. The funny thing is that I was on a web page earlier today that had an ad for the book in the corner. At a quick, only semiconscious glance, the word "audacity" registered in my mind as "mendacity." Then I looked again and saw that my mind was playing games with me. Or else it had mystically torn away the veil of material reality to reveal a deeper truth...
How about a "new age of international cooperation" where we no longer cooperate with Israel
None of all Barack's bs about how the world should not depend on the US to solve world problems all alone and blah, blah, blah was mentioned in this commentary about it.
If you don't want us to be world cop then how dare you ask us to clean up the world's mess was the whole Obama message in his speech. Such imperialist arrogance! There he is in Iraq and Afghanistan still and this speech is supposedly inspiring to some lost liberals like the author, Haider Rizvi? Sad...
...That anti-U.S. sentiment has also served as "an excuse for our collective inaction", he added.///
Yeah, right, Obama... lol.... Just give us all a barf bag when you speak next... PLEASE!
I don't understand why everyone is so angry.
What the heck do you expect?
Put yourself in his shoes.
Government is like a big ship at sea.
It just can't stop and change course easily.
The President has a lot on a plate and he doesn't have absolute power.
He needs our support now more than ever.
I was just looking over some records of my work with my friend Steve Diamond for One Day in Peace.
It's still a good idea.
Having the world celebrate One Day in Peace would be a good place to start.
But we have to start with ourselves yes?
Anger is an appropriate response when one feels betrayed but I still feel that we have to give the President some time.
He inherited a terrible mess.
Think of how hard it is to change things in your own family from negative to a more positive place.
That can take years...sometimes a lifetime.
It's discouraging to open the blog and see so much anger.
Arrgh!
Another insightful comment without any substance from Birdie the Obama-apologist.
Some of us actually believe in accountability, Birdie. Some of us don't give a rat's ass about party affiliation, or who we voted for. This isn't rooting for your favorite football team, Birdie. If a "leader" who represents us says idiotic, hypocritical things and violates campaign promises, we true patriots - that's not to be confused with nationalists, go look it up - we will call him on it, be he Democrat, Republican, or moron.
Get the stars out of your eyes, Birdie, and start examining your savior's ACTIONS. His party holds both houses of Congress and the Executive branch. Stop making excuses for your boy. I dont' give a crap for his high-sounding rhetoric: so far, every single thing he has done has been to continue Bush's policies, and in most cases, accelerate them. He is an embarassment to the US every time he opens his shit-spewing mouth. At least with Bush, he didn't apologize or try and honey-coat what he was doing. I at least respect the Republicans for their brutal honesty. What's your savior's excuse?
