What Bush's Brain Knew
Karl Rove's testimony to Congress about the firing of US attorneys will obscure, not reveal, the truth of the past eight years
On Wednesday, former Bush White House senior officials Karl Rove and Harriet Miers reached an agreement with the House judiciary committee to provide testimony about the administration's involvement in the politicised firings of US Attorneys. Though the justice department's internal investigation has already concluded that the administration's actions were inappropriate, judiciary chairman John Conyers had sought for some time, often with colourful language, to get Rove at the witness table in front of him.
The news that Rove and Miers will testify was met with cautious cheers on the left. Those who had been pushing for their testimony were pleased that an agreement was reached, but concerns still remain about whether the accord will have enough teeth to compel all necessary testimony. If it works, it may well serve as a template for interviewing former White House officials about other Bush-era scandals. But if it fails - as seems likely - it will serve as an obstacle, not a conduit, to uncovering the full truth of the last eight years.
A close reading of the three-page document outlining the agreement seems to suggest plenty of wiggle room for Rove and Miers. Their initial conversations with the committee will be private interviews, done out of the view of the public. Transcripts of the interviews will be created and provided to all "involved parties", though it's unclear if any of those parties will provide, or be allowed to provide, those transcripts to the press. The committee also explicitly reserves the right to seek public testimony, although it's equally unclear whether the parties will be compelled under the agreement to respect that right. After all, the agreement only grants the committee the right to seek public testimony, not compel it.
The scope of the testimony will be limited to facts surrounding the firings of US attorneys and, in Rove's case, issues involving the prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. Rove and Miers will be allowed to refuse any questions that fall outside that narrow scope. But those won't be the only questions that Rove and Miers will be able to avoid.
According to the agreement, "counsel will direct witnesses not to respond to questions ...when questions relate to communications to or from the president." The Bush administration may have loosened its definition of executive privilege to some extent, no longer arguing that any testimony from senior officials need be off-limits. But by allowing Rove and Miers to avoid discussing any material related to presidential communications, the former administration may have found the compromise they'd been hoping for: one that looks good on paper, but has very little impact.
There are several questions that the committee will almost certainly fail to get answered as a result. Can you describe the president's involvement in the decision to fire the US attorneys? Did you ever have a conversation with the president where he suggested firing US attorneys? Did the president order you to take action that would result in the firing of US attorneys for political reasons? If the president didn't play a role in the firings, then it would appear his team had "gone rogue", acting entirely outside his authority. And if, as has been widely speculated, he did play a role, this agreement ensures that we will never find out.
There can be no doubt that the scope of the agreement is broad enough for Congress to gather new, potentially valuable information from Rove's and Miers's testimonies. But by allowing the duo to avoid telling the full and unrestricted truth, the judiciary committee might well regret the precedent it is setting - one that will prevent a full accounting of Bush-era sins, leaving a critical part of American history hidden forever from our view.

Show AllWe still have a Repuglican Supreme Court that would be the final arbiter. This could be the best we can get for now.
I really can't say anything about President Bush that has not been already been said.
Apparently his first out of the country speech since leaving office will be made in Calgary Canada. Oil Country ...That figures...I am sure he will receive a warm reception.........(Side note)
But the subject here is Karl Rove (President Bush's brain?) and I certainly could say much concerning this gentleman but I fear that the descriptive language I would employ would be considered offensive by my fellow commentators here at CD. For now I will reserve comment for a time when I can employ a language more acceptable to the readers of this comment forum.
Bush is going to Calgary? Remember when Saruman went to the Shire after it had been despoiled by orcs?
I think I do remember that, but it was in the day when I experimented with drugs and can't recall the details.

You are taking the wrong drugs...
Try plant based entheogens... Psilocybin, Ayajuasca, etc...
LOL...I do indeed.....
Well it seems like Bush is gonna miss his brain because it looks like that is who set the rules for this "Appearance"
No questions are to be asked concerning the words of the president.
Now, who other than Bush's Brain would insert that loophole?
Throughout history, there have been countless leaders? of various description that have wreaked havoc on their own people and those of other countries. Some have paid a penalty for doing so but many have not. Bush and his miserable band of associates are only one more example of what happens in the world. They deserve a jail cell for crimes against humanity but may escape justice as they spent nearly eight years preparing for this time.
It would appear the Congress has learned the Bush lessons too well. Destroy what you say is good by restricting it so severely that the general public has to think it so ineffective that they welcome your final decision to just do away with it altogether.
Congressional hearings now seem to produce less and less usable or reliable information than the value aides once placed on the time spent in them. What is the purpose of having a hearing in which those called set the rules?
Agreement, hell. You don’t get criminals’ agreement to testify. You don’t let them tell you what you can ask and what you can’t. You knock on their doors with people watching all the escape routes. If they don’t open the door you knock it down. You arrest them. You put them in jail. And when you want to hear their lies and excuses you march them to the courtroom and sit them in a chair with people watching all the escape routes—physical, verbal, or pseudo-legal.
Just a little odd that that’s the conservatives’ normal position, screamed as loud as they can manage over and over and over and over—but for their own tribal leaders it doesn’t apply. Like Rush what’s-his-name with the illegal drugs.
How can there be any question at all about what happens here?
You knock on their doors with people watching all the escape routes.

An agreement? Are they negotiating a role in a movie? This is just more kabuki theatre. The outcome has already predetermined. If I want to watch a badly produced formulaic drama I'll turn on the Lifetime channel. I already know how THIS story ends.
This really sucks,.. ya know chumps, Pelosi and Reid play like they don't have the votes during Bush reign and then after they pretend to be go-getters in the face of a disobedient and increasingly meaningless "president" pretending to not have a filibuster proof senate when they have the collective power to make Al Franken the senator from MN. These people are just punkin' us again. They all took money from Bernie Madoff and his WJC and AIPAC pacs and they don't want the Republicans to out them for their complicity which was absolute and complete. Nothing will come of the prosecutions. Pelosi and Reid were consulted by Bush and Rove at every step of the way and therefore won't let the hearings or the prosecutions begin because the stinking B66tar76 won't expose their Israeli based inducements to fake concern about the Palestinians when they don't give a steamy pile about them...or the Israelis....just the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jack Abramoff lives on in the cramped torture room of the Democrat soul...
I starting to have a Robespierre moment...

Bring America Back !!!!...Yea siderealm, obvious you were having a 'truth' moment there !!!! lol
.....Your ref to Abramoff is interesting. Recall that "W" Bush said he did not even know Abramoff--although six photographs of him with the felon are filed.
Abramoff and Bush and Cheney shared the services of a lady named Susan Ralston, who was given the dubious title of Special Assistant to the President and Vice President of the United States !!!! Susan Ralston was right in there with The Brain, Karl Rove !!!!
**Funny, when Susan Ralston worked for Abramoff she was his Special Assistant as well. Then about 500 emails came up, usually with Ralston as go-between the White House and Abramoff. The US Secret Service refused to give out with schedule and visitor data regarding Abramoff presence at the White House--shielding the data under the States Secrets Act !!
**Then, just before it became untenable for "W" to keep denying he knew Abramoff, Susan Ralston suddenly resigned her White House position, stating she did not want to be an embarrassment to the Administration !!!!
**Abramoff took a plea bargain for bank fraud, but let us not forget what was unanswered was his potential connection to a professional hit-murder of one Gus Boulos in Miami==he was the one screaming he did not get the bank's money when Abramoff and his partner scammed his Cruise-Gambling ships away from him !
**I guess most felonious Lobbyists would rather plead guilty to bank fraud than to first degree murder !! But, what did The Brain know about that ????
**As a siderealm or sidebar or sideshow to that, it is said Mohammed Atta and flight crew took a raucous boat trip on that Gambling Cruise ship, after Abramoff scammed Boulos out of it !!! Atta Boy Abramoff doing a great job there !
Right, Mohammed Atta of 9/11 fame didn't have much to lose there did he !?
I was editing some film for a critical analysis project in 2004 and I used a sequence from "Fahrenheit 911" where Abramoff is seen right behind Bush during the 2001 Inauguration festivities. I was tangentially aware of Ralston but know more after your post. These connections would be enough to land any mere mortal in jail. Madoff's big investors were all based 90% in Hollywood, New York, and Miami. I have a hunch that the money went to Israel for bonds just like the ones Jerry Lewis got in trouble for buying in order to hide income. I am really hoping that we are able to pressure the UBS in Geneva to let go of the secret account list and the amounts of money hidden there and the crooks who stole it.
The house oversight committee has this on Ralston's testimony. (90 pages)

"Their initial conversations with the committee will be private interviews, done out of the view of the public."
This is all one needs to know. This is a farce.
The stuff Rove has on these people must be very hot indeed for him to be able to negotiate terms. What despicable, putrid corruption!
Mossad has the dirt on all the US politicians and many judges ever since they infiltrated US intelligence about 40 years ago...
Some are part of the criminal elite, some are corrupted thru bribes with money or sex, some have been set up (slip a roofie in their drink) and wind up caught on film sleeping with a child or prostitute, and then threatened to go along with the program or be "exposed"...
Those that are too smart or have too much integrity to be bought off or framed get marginalized (kucunich) or murdered (wellstone)...
Sexpionage is a tactic used by young female Mossad agents and assets to gather intel as well as hold leverage over people in power...
It is called a "honey trap"...
Bring America Back !!!!...Yes, GoldenMean, you are striking a live nerve with your post here...........We need to talk !!!!
**You're post is a little off-topic but my sense is you're maintaining these committees are just going thru the motions--giving Rove and Miers--wide escape holes and lack of public scrutiny--because they're basically controlled by Zionist Mossad. You say Sen Leahy and Rep Conyers are just play-acting for politics ???
**Also, recall that the only way "W" Bush and Cheney would give testimony to the 9/11 Comission was that they do it together (holding hands); off the public record; no questions asked of them; and with no subsequent reports to the public ! At least two Panel Members of the 9/11 Commission have publicly admitted they know they were lied to during testimony before them. This is almost identical to what the Committees are doing for Rove and Miers !! Not swearing them in !!!
**FBI agents have admitted that if they come up with derogatory or crimes by Israeli personnel or agents, they better not report on it, or their very careers as FBI Agents are in jeopardy ! Highly indicating that Mossad intelligence controls what the FBI investigates and what it does not !! When the FBI allowed the 'dancing Israelis'--who had failed polygraph tests--to return to the homeland after celebrating the Twin Towers destruction on 9/11==comes specifically to mind !
SO, that makes the FBI a useless organization, totally incapable of doing its mission of protecting us, or preserving our Constitution !
**I am thinking I'd like to discuss with you GoldenMean, directly, so if there is a
way to do that, let me know. TruthKnoller
How do I know you aren't a Mossad agent who wants to slip me a roofie..?
Just kidding...
For privacy's sake, i'd rather not post my email or website address on CD...
However, these articles and comment boards are archived and accessible...
we can continue this conversation on this thread...
or you can post your email and I will reply to you...
Til then, an informative book to read is "Gideon's Spies" by Gordon Thomas...
It reads like an airport novel, but there's lots of good information in there...
Cheers...
What the hell's a "roofie"? I've always heard it called "slipping you a mickey". But I'm from NY, so...
Whatever, but someone ought to slip Rove some rat poison. :)
A roofie is a date rape drug...
I dunno what a mickey is...
I'm sure there is a law that says you can't hold onto information of a criminal nature then use it to extort favors from those who did the crime. If there is no law, there needs to be one that makes holding back that sort of information a crime with stiffer penalties than the actual crime that is hidden.

Change we can . . . .
oh, never mind.
Not discussing Dubya's input is misdirection that works well for Rove, Cheney, Gonzaleze and company. It implies Bush gave it direction and they followed his direction.
Chances are Dubya didn't even know what the firings were all about until the poop hit the fan, or his input was limited to something like "OK guys. Whatever. Now let me get back to ESPN".
I hereby plead of EVERY "interested party" that he/she leak all transcripts to different members of the press and other media.
At least some of them would publicize it widely and "the" leaker could not be identified and punished if all were leakeres.
Bring America Back !!!!.........These UK guys do get it right on point !!
***King George and company spent about the last year covering up any loose ends or tracks they felt could lead to eventual lawsuits, or inquiries which would drag them into Courts, and away from the ranch !!
**They had to find a better Patsy for their Anthrax Scam, which came right out of the NSA neighborhood; they had to finally have NISA try to explain away Building #7- World Trade Center on 9/11==oh yeah folks it caught fire and fell exactly into its construction footprint at 5:30pm that nite !!; they lost about 500,000 emails when Cheney hit the wrong button--that's called the Nixon button; they found the real "Masterminds" of 911--a waterboarded cheauffer and the 19th Hijacker==during Kangaroo courts at Gitmo--who plead Guilty and begged for Martyrdom so they could have their 40 Virgins in heaven !--and that's why old Boogieman bin Laden don't matter no more==even though he's been their fantasy Henchman for 8 years--and the FBI escorted all his friends and family back to the USR the week following 9/11 !!! But, whatta Caveman he was !!
**They took Rove out of the White House so he could engineer the party cover ups under the radar. But he was Yhe Brain behind the Repubby coverups, and still is on FOX TV cheerleading for the Grand "W" Bush Library !!!
****So whatever information Rove and Miers give the Committees on the US Attorney firings should be regarded as dubious, double-entendred, and most probably outright Neocon lies. They will never give out with the Truth until the day they go behind bars, for a long, long while !!
The Obama mantra can be heard across the land: "hold onto as much power as we can!!" Those who say, "we must move forward" are precisely the ones we need to watch most closely. No justice, no peace, but don't bother with marching, just don't spend any money. The rich aren't spending, aren't investing and aren't willing to share. Yet, the Democrats continue to hand out worthless paper money thinking it will solve the massive corruption that has gone on the last eight and a quarter years.

Until some department of govenment sits down and defines executive, what it means, who exactly are executives and have executive privledge. a
Anyone can get away with anything. It is a free for all. Except for those of us who obey the law or go to jail for contempt of court. No wonder the lady for justice is blindfolded.
Sounds like you're saying there should be some who are above the law?

obama's special counsel (and thus doj) worked this deal out b/n rove & co and the committee.

the details are juicy.
Get real. Sh!t-Blossom isn't going to give up his overlords unless a knife is put to his throat. That won't happen with these gutless, self-serving Dems.
Move along folks...
