Trump's Nomination of Kelly Craft for U.N. Ambassador Is a Slap in the Face of Climate Science and Human Rights

Statement of Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch

WASHINGTON

Recently via Twitter, President Trump announced that he intended to nominate Kelly Knight Craft, the current U.S. ambassador to Canada, to serve as ambassador to the United Nations. In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:

"We are disgusted but not surprised by Trump's selection of Kelly Knight Craft to serve as UN ambassador. It's no secret that Trump sees fit to regularly elevate anti-science, anti-climate, pro-pollution corporate shills to positions of power to serve his own narrow interests. But at a time when the United States should be working harder than ever with the rest of the world to address our deepening climate crisis, to select an admitted climate denier to represent us before the UN is especially egregious.

"Last month we submitted to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights a letter outlining grave concerns with America's own adherence to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights regarding the alarming state of drinking water quality and air pollution in this country. We have little confidence that Ms. Craft will be a competent advocate for clean air, safe water and adequate public health either here or abroad if her nomination is confirmed.

"We strongly urge the Senate to reject Ms. Craft's nomination out of hand."

Food & Water Watch mobilizes regular people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water, and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people's health, communities, and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.
