Netanyahu Cancels trip to Obama's Nuclear Summit
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has cancelled a planned trip to Washington next week for President Barack Obama's 47-country nuclear security conference.
Binyamin Netanyahu has cancelled his trip to Washington next week. Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East, but has never confirmed or denied it. It has not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).(Photograph: Sebastian Scheiner/AP) He made the decision after learning Egypt and Turkey
intended to raise the issue of Israel's assumed atomic arsenal
at the meeting, a senior government official said on Friday.
Israel is believed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East, but has never confirmed or denied it. It has not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Netanyahu saw Obama at the White House late last month to discuss the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process. But they failed to see eye to eye and bilateral ties remain strained.
"The prime minister has decided to cancel his trip to Washington to attend the nuclear conference next week, after learning that some countries including Egypt and Turkey plan to say Israel must sign the NPT," the official said.
Deputy Israeli Prime Minister Dan Meridor will stand in for Netanyahu at the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) on April 12-13.
Netanyahu's attendance would have been the first by an Israeli premier at an international nuclear forum. Aides said he originally agreed to go after being reassured by the United States that the NSS communique would focus on efforts to secure fissile material with no allusions to Israel's undeclared arms.
The NSS had also offered Netanyahu an opportunity to drum up support for sanctions against arch-foe Iran, which the West suspects of seeking nuclear weapons despite denials from Tehran. Neither Iran nor North Korea will attend the NSS.
AMBIGUITY
"This conference is about nuclear terrorism," Netanyahu told reporters on Wednesday. "And I'm not concerned that anyone will think that Israel is a terrorist regime. Everybody knows a terrorist and rogue regime when they see one, and believe me they see quite a few -- around Israel."
Based on estimates of the plutonium production capacity of its Dimona reactor, Israel may have stockpiled 80 to 200 nuclear warheads since the late 1960s, independent experts say.
Israeli leaders do not comment on this capability under an "ambiguity" policy billed as warding off enemies while avoiding the kind of provocations that can trigger regional arms races.
The official reticence, and its tacit acceptance by the United States, has long aggrieved Arab and Muslim powers.
Like India and Pakistan -- both also slated to attend the NSS -- Israel is outside the NPT and thus avoids mandatory international inspections of its nuclear facilities. Unlike them, it has not openly tested or deployed atomic weapons.
Netanyahu had been expected to arrive late to the NSS due to Monday's Holocaust memorial ceremonies in Israel, and to spend an additional day in Washington after the summit's conclusion.
The White House had said Obama would not hold a separate working meeting with Netanyahu, given their recent talks. On Thursday, Netanyahu's office had said he might cut short his Washington trip to allow for a stop in New York en route home. News of Netanyahu's withdrawal from the NSS was noted by U.S. Republicans, who saw a snub by the Obama administration.
"Israel is our strongest ally in the Middle East and one of our strongest allies anywhere around this globe," Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, told the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
"And President Obama is playing a reckless game of
continuing down the path of diminishing America's ties to
Israel."

Show AllExactly how would Israel employ its nuclear arsenal? All of its presumptive enemies are on its borders, too close to use a nuclear device without putting Israel's own population and lands at risk (not that the zionists care).
I've read that Israel's defense plans include something called a "Samson option" by which it would try to destroy as much of mankind as possible in the event that it's military defeat became eminent. That name is appropriate; as I recall the biblical stories, Samson was strong but not very bright.

Quickstepper, Some number of those 250+ nukes that Israel has are almost certainly the smaller battlefield tactical nukes -shells that are fired from artillery pieces for example. This actually increases the danger that nukes will be used.
Care to provide a reference that Israel has artillery nukes? I've not seen this.
Artillery nukes are generally useless (unless your goal is terrorism): They cannot achieve the altitude to do much damage.
WTF
Jane's is where I have read this over the years. I don't have exact references and you can't always believe what you read but here's a recent reference:

There's mention of artillery nukes here and also suitcase nukes:

Thanks for the links, Sanctuary. Enjoyable reading.
While I may give pause to this notion, I contend that if Israel did produce miniature gadgets, they are either:
1) a demonstration of the ability/will to produce such gadgets (ie, an engineering challenge for bored nuclear weapons designers), but with no intent to deploy, or;
2) miniaturization is of course useful in multiple, independent (targetable) reentry vehicles or MIRVs, which *could* be an Israeli design goal.
Except for MIRVs, such miniature gadgets are really useful only as a tool of terror, and have no place in traditional multi-national or single-country battlefields.
"14)...the Philistines [Palestinians] shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him [Samson], and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. 15) And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith." (Judges 15: 14-15)
The "jawbone of an ass"; now who could that be?
Actually, as Martin van Creveld once famously pointed out, Israel can point its nukes at most European capitals at any time.
it does point it at all the western nation, including the White house and Capitol. Nuclear blackmail anyone??
The US-made F16 is the delivery platform of choice. Generally, most of Israel's neighbors are downwind.
Umm no, it is pretty safe to say that the Zionists in Israel are a terrorist regime. It is hardly a surprise that Israel would back out of the talks. After all, Israel is spitting on the United States, but Biden is claiming it is raining, right Joe?
Liz Cheney, after apparently poring over the contents of The Project For a New American Century, basically notes how Israel should never be criticized for its actions. One would expect such rhetoric from a neoconservative. Unfortunately, one suspects that it will be a cold day in hell before any Democrat will ever get up the nerve to condemn Israel and to demand that the Israelis allow weapons inspectors into their country in order to clear up any ambiguity regarding the number of nuclear weapons that Israel possesses. This desire to remain silent by the U.S. regarding Israel's nuclear arsenal is in stark contrast to the eagerness displayed by America's leaders regarding Iran's supposed desire to build nuclear weapons, in spite of the fact that Iran has repeatedly stated that its proposed nuclear facilities will be used in order to pursue and maintain an energy program. Of course no Democrats, let alone any Jewish Democrats, have rarely, if ever, pointed out the disparity of how one country is treated in a far different manner than another non-Jewish nation.
Since the passage of the Symington amendment it is my understanding that the U.S. has been giving Israel aid ILLEGALLY all these years since they do possess nuclear weapons and refuse to be a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty:
http://www.antiwar.com/orig/gsmith.php?articleid=14229
Why does the U.S. continue to give Israel aid under these dubious circumstances?
Why has Israel's napalming and bombing of the USS Liberty been covered up for so many years?
Am I the only one wondering why Israel has such a grip on the entire Congress and the presidency regardless of whether it's a Republican or Democrat?
Why is AIPAC allowed to control Congress the way it does? Why isn't it being forced to register as a foreign agent?
Why is Israel allowed to flaunt scores of U.N. resolutions?
Something stinks here.
Everybody will be a lot happier when Israel is finally moved to Sedona Arizona where all those displaced Europeans would be a lot happier and not surrounded by a bunch of crazy Arabs.
The last place to bring them would be here (USA). The potential for WW3 could only escalate with the Israelies and Radical Right Wing being able to completely join forces. What a nightmare scenario.
Actually it might be a better idea to re-locate the Israeli's back to their ORIGINAL HOMELAND:
http://www.tellingfilms.netne.net/birobidjan.htm
"Everybody knows a terrorist and rogue regime when they see one, and believe me they see quite a few -- around Israel."
We especially note the regime calling itself "Israel" to be a terrorist and rogue regime.
"The NSS had also offered Netanyahu an opportunity to drum up support for sanctions against arch-foe Iran..."
Except that if Netanyahu wants Obama's (or anyone else's) support for this, he must stop building you know what. But if he wants to keep his job, he must continue building you know what.
Stan Laurel couldn't have gotten himself in a finer mess.
We need to get tough here!
The dialogue should go something like this:
Obama:(to Netenyahu) Look here, you m....r f....r, we're trying to bring some order to the world and you better get your
f...ing ass in here ON TIME! OR ELSE!
Netenyahu: Yes, SIR!
The U.S. has pussyfooted for FAR too long with the abomination that has become Israel. Until we...and just to be clear, NO ONE ELSE CAN GET THE JOB DONE...knock some heads together (BOTH Israeli and Arab, wherever necessary) the Middle East will continue to be the cesspool it has always been.
And while we're at it, we should permanently EXPORT AIPAC!!....and with it, Rahm Emanuel!!!
Can there be any higher form of hypocrisy than this one occupying force which has been guilty of murder and much more--even stealing organs--telling the world to fear and hate a more spiritual and honorable nation that they can't be trusted with something that they themselves possess illegally and clandestinely --never belonging to any org or body for audit or inspection--this is completely intolerable--I demand equal justice for all states. If you can't audit your partner something is wrong. A thousand curses on these dimwits that comprise the USI.

The award for Psychopath of the Year goes to Mr. Benyamin Netanyahu.
Oh, yeah, Israel is as mild and sweet as Little Bo Peep, according to Mr. N., and everyone else is always at fault.
Gee, that sounds like the current and previous U.S. Administrations.
Well, maybe several awards for Psychopaths of the Year are in order.
Creating carnage wherever they go ... in "self-defense," of course ... and lying through their teeth and absolutely indifferent and unfeeling when it comes to the pain and suffering of the most vulnerable, and always, always in full, conscienceless, unremorseful denial about the results of what they order and do.
The springs of the wagon that hauls the Karmic load around are mighty close to breaking. And that's not a wish or a plan, but sooner or later just the way it works.
A truly dangerous, dangerous situation that will have to play out. If we are fortunate, this absolutely cruelly insane time in the history of our flawed species will not mark the end of the last chapter in the book.
But it could.
As a former therapist friend of mine commented years ago, "Crazy, mean people do crazy, mean things. And often unpredictably."

Well said. Now if the terrorist nation under discussion, and our own, will simply abide by these ten principles, we'll be in very good shape, very shortly.

But, y'know, Cee, he was secretly telling the truth. We *do* see quite a few terrorist-regime elements 'around' Israel. Just as we see quite a few priests 'around' Rome, and Scots 'around' Glasgow.
(I second your award vote, of course)
I LOVE THIS. WHERE THE HELL DID YOU FIND THIS DRIBBLE. TRADITIONAL CODE OF ETHICS.
AFTER STUDYING THE NATIVE AMERICAN FOR OVER 30 YEARS I CAN SAY WITH DOUBT THAT THIS IS THE GREATEST LIE EVER BLAMED ON THE INDIANS. THIS IS A FIRST NATION CHRISTIAN PUBLICATION. WHO KNOWS MAYBE OUR MUSLIM FRIENDS ON THIS SITE WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT JESUS. NICE TRY.
THIS IS FROM ONE NATION AND IS CALLED THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF NATIVE AMERICANS.
OF THE 116 OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED TRIBES NOT ONE FOLLOWED A CHRISTIAN BELIEF UNTIL FORCED.
YOU KNOW HOW MANY TRIBES WERE PROUD OF THEIR WARFARE. OVER A HUNDRED.
CHIEF WALICAWALICAKE WHEN TOLD BY THE GOVERNOR OF NY THAT THEY COULD NOT HAVE WAR ANYMORE SAID BUT WHAT SHALL WE DO WITHOUT OUR NOBEL PROFESSION. COMANCHES WERE VICIOUS. THEIR TORTURE WOULD INCLUDE CUTTING YOU OPEN AND PULLING YOUR INTESTINES OUT SO THEY COULD TIE THEM TO A DOG. THE DOG WOULD RUN 20 OR 30 FEET AND THEN STUCK WOULD EAT THE INTESTINES WHILE YOU WATCHED. SOMETIME THEY WOULD FILL YOU WITH HOT COALS AND BURN YOU FOR DAYS.

ONLY THE OLDER NATIONS WERE CANNIBALS LIKE AT CHICO CANYON.
ALL SOUTHERN TRIBES HAD SLAVES. TO KILL SOMEONE TO GAIN THEIR HORSES OR WOMEN WAS COMMON.
POSTING CHILDRENS FANACIES AND FAIRY TALES WHICH ARE UNTRUE IS SO DISHONEST.
NORTHERN MEXICO AN SOUTHERN UNITED STATES TRIBES AT PEYOTE. MESCALINE. I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT A TARAHUMARA MEDICINE WOMAN COULD MAKE YOU A PSYCHEDELIC BLEND THAT WHEN CONSUME WOULD BRING PEACE TO ALL. WANT TO TRY IT?
kingpaddy - you sound like you got into the whiskey cellar.
I don't recall typing the word Christian anywhere? Paddy is sort of Irish-sounding. Are you having a spasm about the latest revelations re the Roman Church?
And yes, there were tribes who were not just warlike, but made war and stole horses and goats and the like from other tribes as their way of life and were known for their mercilessness and cruelty.
HOWEVER, the principles that I copied are solid ones, and many tribes had similar codes. But if you don't believe they have anything to do with Native American traditional values, call them your own, and go forth and live them. Better than yelling and screaming nonsense.
Maybe you need a dose of that brew from the Tarahumara Medicine Woman you mentioned to bring you to peace. Or maybe you partook of something she made, and it was the wrong stuff.
No. I don't want to try it ... especially if your behavior is the result.
Get some rest.

Could you tell me how I might put myself in contact with a "TARAHUMARA MEDICINE WOMAN?"
Netanyahu is arrogance personified.
Netanyahu presonifies the less than charming characteristics of a yahoo.
M$M Complicity -
M$M keeps repeating the talking point that it is ambiguous that Israel has nuclear weapons while at the same time conveniently not mentioning that Israel imprisoned one of its own citizens, Mordechai Vanunu, who worked at the Dimona nuclear weapons facility for exposing the program and providing photos of the program.
http://www.vanunu.com/uscampaign/photos.html
MSNBC posted this graphic a few days ago stating that Israel possesses nuclear weapons:

Netanyahu isn't "afraid" of "disclosing" anything. He's just lifting his leg on the Obama Administration again.
Much as I despise Netanyahu and just about everything he stands for, I must say I find this amusing.
"And President Obama is playing a reckless game of continuing down the path of diminishing America's ties to Israel."
If only, if only...
The headline is misleading - Israel is not ducking out of the conference, though Netanyahu is. I suspect this has nothing to do with the conference (as his deputy will have to sit there and listen to wahtever Egypt and Turkey have to say), and a lot to do with the nice day out in Washington DC that Bibi was planning to have. I suspect he's been told in no uncertain terms that unless he's going to bring some serious new proposals that will advance a peace settlement, then POTUS doesn't propose wasting any more of his valuable time talking to him. A further snub, on top of the dressing down he got last time he strode into the White House, would be too great a price to pay.
On another news website, Netanyahu was described today as "wily". I presume that's as in "Coyote". He seems to be making a habit of lighting sticks of Acme dynamite only to drop them at his feet while attempting to throw them.
Dream on! It was Obama who got the dressing-down from Bibi during their last meeting. Note that it was Obama, not Netanyahu, who dined alone.
The other 46 countries should now decline the invitation too, in order to make clear to Mr. Obama that without the participation of the only nuclear proliferators in the ME that is not a member of the IAEA, any meeting on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons would be pointless.
Netanyahu : "I'm not concerned that anyone will think that Israel is a terrorist regime," he said. "Everybody knows a terrorist and rogue regime when they see one, and believe me they see quite a few around Israel."
No Mr. N, your country broke every rule in the book when you shared nuclear bomb making technology and testing with apartheid South Africa, with whom Israel covertly tested their weapon in the Indian Ocean. Fortunately the De Clerk government was defeated and Mandela and his ANC arranged for SA's disposal of nuclear weaponry and materials with the IAEA.
Also Mr. N. your government has threatened to use non-conventional weapons against Iran in order to attack their underground CIVIL nuclear development facilities.
In short the threat providing urgent response and the reason for any ME countries such as may have Iran to establish a nuclear deterrent, the spur to any new nuclear race is Israel's nuclear arsenal. Whether or not Israel considers itself not rouge or terrorist is quite irrelevant in view of its history of aggression, as always claiming defence. (I think Hitler said he was defending against Polish aggression too.)
This NSS must be cancelled and replaced by a binding resolution in the UNSC setting out Israel's nuclear threat and rewarding its rouge status with appropriate sanctions especially in view of its repeated flaunting of previous UN resolutions. The irony that this country claims its "right" to exist on a non binding resolution of the General Assembly...,. talk about cherry picking!
Enough Mr. N., yes we know a rouge and a terrorist when we see one. “We’re looking right at ya”. And Mr. O. you know what they say about countries that protect and harbour terrorists, not that your own country's behaviour is much less egregious..?
It’s time to take the thorn out of the side of the ME. It is time this six million or so population is treated like any other comparable territory/country that behaves with total disregard to human principals. Could one imagine Hong Kong behaving like this, an illicit nuclear power, proliferating weapons technology, threatening an entire region, committing war crimes, and crimes against humanity, ghetto-izing Gaza and Bantustan-ing the West Bank?? This Zionist mafia was not what anybody in the “global community” had in mind or can qualify as “acceptable” behaviour in the community of nations. Existential threat? Yes, but to whom?
"The other 46 countries should now decline the invitation too, in order to make clear to Mr. Obama that without the participation of the only nuclear proliferators in the ME that is not a member of the IAEA, any meeting on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons would be pointless."
Not sure that I agree with this point. If it becomes clear as the time for the conference nears that there will be considerable discussion of Israel's nuclear proclivities then Obama will be strongly pressured to cancel the meeting.
Should the meeting proceed, though, I like the prospect of Israel being "conspicuous by its absence."
q
Many believe that Obama is a Muslim, but after the passover seder celebrated at the white house we now know that O is a jew and that he won't do anything to punish the zionists.
"And I'm not concerned that anyone will think that Israel is a terrorist regime."
Famous last words, right up there with "I am not a crook" - Nixon.
That choker really stands out, doesn't it?
If Nixon had had the AIPAC money behind him as Netanyahu does he would still be president from beyond the grave.
I was watching a clip of your Republicans and Democrats on tv yesterday. They were fighting to be the party that loves Israel the most.
My take on this is that, this conference, like the recent nuclear posture policy of Obama's, which for the first time explicitly threatens non-nuclear countries with atomic first strike, like the talks he had recently with Netanyahu which, while not resolving the Palestinian issue, did produce more common ground on opposing Iran, my take is that this is all prepatory theatre. These gestures, and the recent articles in the US press that give one flash-backs of Judith Miller's less than stellar work on Iraq, are all aimed at building up to war with Iran.
I was reading yesterday that America is building up its bomb suplies at Diego Garcia, in a similar fashion to the way it did prior to the Iraq invasion. Along with other war preperations in the area, I take this as an indication that America wants another war.
Aha! You do perceive the web they weave.
Ever since Reagan improved his political numbers by beating up on a virtually defenceless country, starting an expensive micro-war has been a White House check-off item. Bush One did it, Clinton did it, Bush Two did it, and Obama will do it now that his approval rating is sliding into the toilet where it belongs.
Killing innocent people to make themselves look like He-Men. Psychopaths one and all.
These numbers are underestimated. Other experts put the Isreali nuclear arsenal at 300-400, with all the needed US made F-16's to deliver them, too.
Israel is not our strongest ally in the Middle East but may be among our worst enemies. Zionism is dangerous and should be openly rejected. Zionist extremists are destabilizing and have the potential to set off a war that could quickly escalate. Tough action with sharp teeth needs to be applied to Israeli Zionists by the United States to reduce the danger of war.
I think it's safe to say that Zionists are the worst terrorists in the world.
Especially considering Israel's attack on the USS Liberty in 1967. Go to YouTube and pull up the BBC's "Dead In the Water" then you'll understand why I keep harping about the Liberty.
Something stinks here. Big time.
So we have a conference about nuclear development, weapons, and terrorism --- but Iran is not invited.
Reminds of having a meeting about health care and not letting those who wanted single payer in.
Maybe next there will be a conference about mine safety without anyone from the mineworkers or mine owners allowed in...
Well said. Blatantly Orwellian. The entire conference and O's new policy seems designed prmarily, if not exclusively, to threaten Iran and little else---one more duck to line up as pretext for attack.
You have it figured out. What has kept them so long?
This is what three billion per year in foreign aid buys us?
$3+ trillion my friend.
