German Chancellor Merkel Expresses Regret for Deadly Afghan Air Strike
Chancellor warns against rush to judgment on attack ordered by German commanders that killed up to 70 villagers
Angela Merkel said today that her government deeply regretted the death of Afghan civilians in a controversial air strike ordered by German commanders.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, September 8, 2009. Merkel promised a comprehensive report about the Afghan strike. "We will not gloss over anything, but we will not accept any premature condemnation. I refuse to tolerate that, either from Germany or from abroad," she said. (REUTERS/Tobias Schwarz) But the German chancellor told parliament she would not tolerate criticism "at home or abroad" until the full details of the incident were known, and said the German army's presence in Afghanistan was "in the urgent interest of our country".
Merkel's comments came as Nato acknowledged for the first time that Afghan civilians were among those killed when German commanders called in US jets to attack two stolen oil tankers near Kunduz on Friday. The death toll has not been established, but Afghan Rights Monitor, a national watchdog group, said that between 60 and 70 villagers had been killed.
A statement today from the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force said that commanders originally believed the tankers were surrounded only by Taliban insurgents, but a subsequent review showed "civilians also were killed and injured in the strike".
The air strike - the deadliest military operation German troops have been involved in since the second world war - has caused a rift between German and US authorities over the conduct of the war, and prompted a fierce reaction from the Afghan government. The new US commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, who had sought to distance himself from the incident, today appointed a Canadian general to investigate the incident.
Addressing a special sitting of parliament, Merkel acknowledged that civilians may have been harmed, but said that contradictory reports of the incident meant that the victims had still not been identified.
"We will not accept premature judgments," she said. "I say this very clearly after what I have experienced in the last few days: I will not tolerate that from whoever it may be, at home as well as abroad."
Less than three weeks before a general election, the attack has also become a major political issue in Berlin.
Merkel resisted calls from the Left party for an immediate withdrawal of German troops, but she said Nato allies should define a "clear goal" by the end of the year regarding a "handover strategy".
The government, which has referred to its Afghanistan policy as a "stabilisation effort" and has avoided using the word "war", has come under pressure from all parties to talk with more honesty to the electorate about the conflict.
Jürgen Trittin, of the Green party, delivered a blistering attack on the government, calling the raid a "breaking point that clearly shows that Germany has shifted its strategy on Afghanistan and in my view, in the wrong direction".
Addressing the embattled defence minister, Franz Josef Jung, who has faced calls for his resignation in the light of the incident, which he referred to yesterdayas "militarily necessary", Trittin said: "You obviously work on the principle hush it up, deny it, and when there's no alternative, I'll eventually apologise."
Germany's foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, of the Social Democrats, told the Bundestag it would be "irresponsible" for German troops simply to pull out of Afghanistan. But he added: "The Bundeswehr is not an occupying force. We're not there for eternity."

Show AllAh, wanton slaughter arriving on the wings of the Luftwaffe! That takes us back!
A regrettable Merry Mixup, of course-- but who could blame Merkel for becoming a little verklempt?

Many greetings from Germany !
The participation of german soldiers in modern international
forces is criticized by some german political parties.
But - to be honest - you should never forget, that it´s the United States that always urge us to join in !
And even IF (until now, there is no proof !) IF there have been some errors and civilians have died, the americans should not look down on the german army in such a polemic way !! Hitler is long dead. And we are glad !
But for decades, the US-Army has fucked up one country after the other. US-Forces keep prisoners arrested for months without bringing them to trial.
Now, YOU are not the ones, that should judge so harshly over us !!!
Many Greetings from Germany !!!
you make good points. but so long as the German people SHOW their displeasure at how Germany has JOINED , even if through coercion by the USA , in this neo-colonial war of Eastern and Southern regions and countries for their resources and geopolitical strategic importance - which IS what it is - then yes, German PEOPLE should not be condemned.
Germany has a DIFFERENT political system and reality than the USA - where Americans are like SHEEP and COWARDLY towards their bad leadership that spreads WAR and exploitation throughout the world.
while the Americans are IMPOTENT in TRULY challenging their BAD leadership -- germans ought to be able to do DIFFERENTLY.
of course everyone knows this is PAYBACK by Germany TO the USA for the USA "rebuilding" germany after the horrific second world war. that is a CONSEQUENCE of germany's OWN warmaking or the Imperial rivalries between the countries in europe that ENDED UP in terrible wars...
and the USA is making germany "remember that it OWES the USA" ....
having said THAT - it is the GERMAN people's RESPONSIBILITY to FORCE your own leaders to do the right thing - which is:
to STOP being the POODLE of the USA.
"But the German chancellor told parliament she would not tolerate criticism "at home or abroad" until the full details of the incident were known, and said the German army's presence in Afghanistan was "in the urgent interest of our country".
If we didn't know it was Angela Merkel making this comment, it could certainly be George W. Bush. She must have really enjoyed that shoulder massage George gave her at one of those grandiose, accomplish-nothing meetings!
When does the Opposition ever obey the government in a Parliament? Merkel can "not tolerate" all she wants when the Opposition brings it up - which they will do repeatedly.
So that is what Merkel is pulling the old "It is inappropriate to comment on it until the investigation into it has been completed and the election is over" scam. I am quite familiar with that one.
From Deutsche Welle:
Addressing Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, on Tuesday, Merkel expressed her "deep regret" for any civilians killed in last week's airstrike which targeted Taliban militants and was requested by German forces near Kunduz in Afghanistan.
"Every innocent person who is killed in Afghanistan is one too many," Merkel told parliamentarians in Berlin.
While promising a thorough investigation and a full report on the raid, which is believed to have left dozens of Taliban militants as well as civilians dead, Merkel slammed critics for drawing premature conclusions.

Bundestag=Congress
Merkel is an MdB (member of the Bundestage)=Congresswoman as well as Chancellor
I like the name of the German Defense Minister - Franz Josef Jung. Wasn't there a Governor of the State of Bavaria named Franz Josef Strauss who was involved with selling arms to foreign countries and bribing the former leader of Merkel's party? That said, one can't often choose who one is named after - just ask GWB.
She says: "Every innocent person killed in Afghanistan is one too many"....
SOooooooooooooo....why did your German soldiers KILL them ANYWAY? "suspected terrorists?" ....a "mistake?".....
they are DEAD..
and Angela Merkel then says:
as george bush would say:
"we have to be there so we don't fight them over here".......
and STILL - the innocent people are DEAD in THEIR OWN LAND because of your GERMAN SOLDIERS in a place they don't belong ...Madame MErkel.
and THAT MEANS -- saying "Every innocent person killed in Afghanistan is one too many" -- is your BIG LIE.
your precious German Fatherland and soil obviously is so important to "Defend" from AFGHANIS that you GO TO AFGHANISTAN
cross ITS borders - PLANT your soldiers - and KILL afghanis...
over there - thousands of miles away - where the DEAD afghanis haven't even HEARD of YOU in your precious parliament.
Obama was sworn in on a Tuesday. On Friday he became a war criminal by ordering an air strike. Merkel needs to watch out. She is close.
BTW, the comment is often heard that the USA is the only nation in the western world that doesn't have some form of government mandated health care. The simple fact is that we can't afford it. However, if we didn't spend so much on our empire, there are a lot of things we could afford. Johnson couldn't do both "guns and butter". Neither can Obama.
