Egypt Pulls Down the Shutters on Aid
CAIRO - Egyptian authorities have almost fully sealed the border with Gaza, preventing delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid.
"The government has expressly forbidden the entry of aid convoys laden with food into the Gaza Strip," Emmad al-Din Moustafa, member of the Popular Committee for Aiding Gaza told IPS. "The continued border closure -- like the Israeli assault itself -- constitutes a crime against humanity."
Israel began a series of devastating air strikes on targets throughout the Gaza Strip Dec. 27, followed by a ground offensive launched Jan. 3. According to Israeli officials, the campaign, which has included thousands of air strikes and naval bombardment, comes in retaliation for rockets fired at Israel by Gaza-based Palestinian resistance factions.
Since the campaign began, humanitarian aid -- donated by sympathizers from across the Arab and Islamic world -- has flown into the city of Al-Arish, 40 km west of Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip. But according to local sources, Egyptian authorities are preventing the transportation of food and medicine into the besieged territory.
"The crossing has only been opened briefly five or six times to allow the entry of limited amounts of aid," Hatem Al-Bulk, political activist from Al-Arish told IPS. "About 1,000 tons of food have been delivered so far, but the population of Gaza needs an estimated 1,500 tons per day to survive."
Even before the Israeli onslaught, the Gaza Strip had been subject to a crippling, internationally sanctioned 'embargo' that destroyed its economy and brought it to the brink of humanitarian disaster.
Since Palestinian resistance movement Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007, after winning elections in 2006, Egypt -- like Israel -- has kept its border with the enclave tightly shut. In tandem with the neutralization of airports and maritime ports, the border closures have deprived Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants of most essential goods, including food, medicine and fuel.
Egypt says it cannot reopen the Rafah crossing -- the sole transit point along its roughly 14-kilometre border with the Gaza Strip -- in the absence of Palestinian Authority (PA) officials and EU observers, under a 2005 security agreement.
"Egypt doesn't want to sanctify the division (between the Hamas run Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Authority run West Bank) by opening the Rafah crossing in the absence of the PA and European observers," President Hosni Mubarak said Dec. 30.
According to some Egyptian officials, the border has been opened when it has been safe to do so.
"The Rafah crossing is open for the entry of humanitarian aid and to receive the injured," North Sinai Governor Gen. Mohamed Abdel Fadil was quoted as saying in the Wednesday (Jan. 7) edition of state daily Al-Gomhouriya. "The crossing is only being closed during heavy Israeli bombardment of the Palestinian side."
Fadil added that Egypt had received 130 injured Palestinians for treatment in Egyptian hospitals since the outset of the campaign, and was prepared to receive many more. More than 3,000 people are lying injured in Gaza, besides more than 700 killed.
Local sources confirm that the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing has come under frequent Israeli attack since the campaign began.
"The Palestinian side has been hit several times with earth-penetrating munitions, " said Al-Bulk. "Egyptian Rafah has become a ghost town because so many residents have left for Al-Arish and other cities in the Sinai Peninsula."
Meanwhile, local activists say the situation in the Gaza Strip has become dire.
"Many Gazans can't find food," said Moustafa, who is in regular contact by telephone with several families across the border. "If the situation doesn't drastically improve in the next three days, people will starve to death. Meanwhile 50,000 tons of food is sitting in Al-Arish, awaiting the authorities' permission to make the crossing. Where are the international humanitarian institutions, like the UN?"
Doctors and medical experts have been barred from entering the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday (Jan. 6), a group of 55 Egyptian medical volunteers of varying specialties from universities throughout the country were prevented from crossing into Gaza.
"Although we signed a statement saying we were responsible for our own safety, the border authorities at Rafah refused us entry without explanation," Yasser Mohamed, a heart surgery specialist at Cairo University and one of the medical volunteers, told IPS from Al-Arish. "Shortly afterwards, the minister of health -- who happened to be in the area -- told us we couldn't enter Gaza because 'Israel had not given its approval'.
"Doctors in Gaza, who are usually trained only in general medicine, are in desperate need of our skills," added Mohamed. "If we were let in, we could save lots of lives."
According to Al-Bulk, security forces on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing are leaving nothing to chance.
"Police forces in Rafah and Al-Arish have been beefed up substantially since the Israeli campaign began," he said. "And they have orders to fire on anyone attempting to breach the border."

Egypt knows which side its bread is buttered.
Its a mafia thing they are getting "paid off" !!!!
Meanwhile the bias in the media is almost blatant, lies go unchallenged and contra opinions are professionally interrupted by practiced TV presenters so that “Jo the Plumber” only gets the intended one sided message.
For example the “Hamas started it by firing rockets” constantly repeated message.
Americans are not told that Israel left Gaza in Nov 2006 exactly at the end of yet another Israeli 6 day search and destroy operation which left 56 Palestinian dead as “another warning” to natives resisting occupation.Israel then continued to retain total control of air sea and land and all entrances and exits to Gaza. Israel maintained a “siege” in its full fury, allowing only barely enough food and fuel to enter to stave off mass famine and disease with Palestinian children reduced to eating grass to survive. Such a policy of collective punishment, initiated by Israel to punish Gaza for political developments within the Gaza strip, constitutes a continuing flagrant and massive violation of international humanitarian law as laid down in Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The Egyptian government behaves like a province of Israel with quislings like Mubarak.
Timeline of the Israel-Palestine dispute
Ancient Times: Moses leads jewish slaves out of Egypt to the land of Canaan, occupied by non jews. One True God(Zeus, Osiris and the rest are all fakers) says the land belongs to his Chosen people(all the green mountains of Peru, snow covered peaks of Asia, and plains of Africa, that's all extra stuff God created to balance out his most special of places: the ME desert).
After 400 years the One True God decides that he wants to scatter his chosen people, so he gives the land back to the non jews. And has a traitor jew become leader of a new religion that has a love/hate relationship with jews.
1880s: A couple of European jews want to establish a homeland for jews. Call it Zionism.
1900-1917: The Turkish Ottoman empire collapses and the Brits move into Palestine. Zionists in Europe twist arms to get Balfour declaration. Lawrence of Arabian promises to help arabs get independence but zionist jews and western oil interests have the upper hand. Zionist jewish settlers start moving to Palestine and buying absentee arab land, and making rules that only jews can buy the land. This annoys Palestinian arabs and jews, who see the zionists as troublemaker racists.
1920s-30s: More zionists move in, and more trouble happens.
Western countries start propping up kings and dictators to run newly created Arab nations so they can get oil wealth.
1938: Zionists ask Gandhi to say something nice about their plans for Palestine. He says Palestine belongs to the arabs as france does to the french.
They dont like that. They keep trying but in 1946 he says the zionist jews should not resort to naked terrorism and taking a land by force.
39-1946: Hitler's jewish (and non jewish) extermination camps leads to a massive influx of settlers in palestine.
The UN decides to give the minority jews the majority of the land in a partition plan, which pisses off the indigenous arabs.
1946-48: Jewish terrorists blow up hotels, expel arabs from villages, assassinate UN officials.
Israel declares itself a state-starts rewriting history, claiming the arabs attacked them after they peacefully established a country(see Gandhi).
1950s: Israel continued to take land and kill arabs. Working with France they attack Egypt over the Suez Canal. Israel tries to hold onto it until Eisenhower tells them to let go.
1967: Israel attacks Egypt and Syria and takes the West Bank, Gaza, and Golan heights. Starts expanding settlements. It once again rewrites history to suggest it was attacked first.
It almost sinks the USS Liberty, claiming that on a clear sunny day with no wind it mistook a steel hi tech naval communications vessel for a wooden egyptian horse carrier. Even though it got close enough to machine gun lifeboats. It said it was sorry, and gave back some of its US tax dollars to compensate the victims.
1971: Israel rejects a peace deal with Egypt that would require giving back all the 67 land, but gets friendly with Apartheid South Africa.
1973: Egypt and Syria attack Israel on a holiday(apparently God was asleep and didnt help out his chosen people, so they turn to the US). Israel fights them off. Arab countries respond by spiking oil prices for western nations.
Israel starts funding Hamas(in palestine) and the Muslim Brotherhood(Egypt) as Islamic fundamentalist groups to sew discord with Arafat's secular Palestinian group Fatah.
1980: Carter presses Israel to a peace deal with Egypt.
1982: Israel invades Lebanon to get at Palestinians. Devastates country, kills tens of thousands, and uses proxy christian armies to massacre refugees.
1987: first intifada, Israel shoots children throwing the most deadly terrorist weapon of choice: stones.
1994: Baruch Goldstein massacres dozens of arabs in mosque. Suicide bombings start.
Israel and Palestinians sign Oslo accords-interm peace deal. Palestinians to police themselves to protect Israel, Israel continues to build settlements, demolish homes, kill palestinians etc.
2000: rejects a final peace deal with the palestinians, blames them for not wanting an apartheid system. Leaves Lebanon, but doesnt agree to give back prisoners of war or Shebaa farms. Continues to meddle in Lebanese affairs, blames Syria for everything.
Ariel Sharon visits a mosque in Jerusalem with 2000 soldiers, palestinians start throwing stones-massacres them(stones are still dangerous, especially to 2000 Israeli soldiers armed with machine guns). Second intifada begins.
2001: 911, New York- Israeli spies on van are laughing as they film the twin towers attacks. Arrested and released later. Bibi Netanyahu appears on Israeli tv and says "this is good for us."
2002: Israel rejects Saudi peace plan. Urges US to attack iraq and then Iran and Syria.
2005: Israel removes settlers from gaza with major theatrical show. Keeps control of borders.
2006: Israel attacks Lebanon to get back two captured soldiers from Hezbollah(who are strangely still upset about the 10 000 prisoners held by israel). Has children write messages on bombs to be dropped into civilian areas.
Israel devastates Lebanese coastline-allowing tons of oil and chemicals to pollute it. Drops hundreds of thousands of landmines before leaving. Oh yeah-kills a 1000. Israel loses about 100 soldiers.
US and Israel force Palestinians to have an election as distraction from all the demolishing of homes, killing of their people by Israel. Hamas wins big in independently verified democratic election. Israel decides to get back at Hamas by starving Gazans.
2007: Israel and US arm Fatah for a coup against Hamas, but Hamas beats them back. Israel punishes Gazans even more. Hamas initiates ceasefire with Israel.
2008:
Israel promises to unleash a holocaust on Gaza.
In November they kill a dozen Hamas members. Hamas decides it doesnt want to renew ceasefire since Israel's definition of one is where no Israeli is killed but lots of Palestinians are. Israel uses this as an excuse to kill 700 and counting. But lots of its people suffer from shock.
Israeli citizens vote Bush favorite US president. Rest of the world rate him the worst. Chosen people of the One True God cant be wrong can they?
Hi Webber, well done, thanks!
Thanks for that Webber. Can you suggest good sources for the time line you outlined?

et tu brute?.........................
If Egypt is it's people, they love their Palestinian brothers and would help them if they could. But Egypt is this too-a vicious dictator and intelligence apparatus that tortures then kills dissenters.
Egypt is it's people, even if they are silenced at the moment by fear and prisons and surveillance and torture and murder.
And Egypt Stands by Palestine. "Hosni" is no more Egypt than george the *&%#$ is America.
azjoe:Hi. Happy New Year. Did you read Howard Zinn's speech, transcript, on DemocracyNow of Jan. 2,2009? He gave the speech on Nov.8,2008 and DemocracyNow played it,Jan.2. He speaks to an issue that I think is important. The interests of a government and of the people are not the same. When someone says, "...in the US interest", he points out that the government and you,me do not have the same interests. Maybe I don't understand what you mean by "Egypt is its people". www.democracynow.org fabulous speech I have known some Coptic Egyptians.
Hi NYCartist. Happy New year to you. It will be an interesting one. Although I've not read HZ's speech, your synopsis is clear. And what I mean by "Egypt is it's people" is as opposed to Mubarak and the Mukhabarat. I mean Egypt is the 98% of the population living in poverty and fear of the secret police. Not the police state apparatus, maybe 2% of the people, even if they are in control of the military and policy.
Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that the countries that receive the lion's share of US "aid" (billion in money, weapons and personnel) are:
Israel
Columbia and
Egypt
I notice that very few of the pro-Israel-only trolls never bother showing up here. Even when they do, notice how they praise corrupt dictators all the while blaming Hamas only? I do not support the way Israel or Egypt is going out of its league to deny the innocent victims their aid. Until the US and EU stop supporting Israel and its neighboring Arab dictators, nothing will change.

Hey, they voted for Hamas, right? That settles it. Any country that elects warmongering a$$#____s hellbent on waging aggressive, unprovoked war should be starved, pulverized, and gassed. I'll be down in my bomb shelter.
"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."--(?).
YOU MEAN ANY COUNTRY LIKE THE USA?
Perceptive. You understand sarcasm.
"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."--(?).
Evil has only one tool - that is the disruption of peace - it is applied in infinite ways but it is always the same tool -
I thought that was:
"Religion is the last refuge of the scoundrel."
Dr. Samuel Johnson--and revived by Bob Dylan.
Thanks.

Gazans will suffer more than anything we have witnessed and it will change the situation because Israel is becoming a war criminal Nation and they are going to cause the greatest hatred against Jews that we will have seen since the World Wars.
Israel carries out Collective punishment, Bombing homes, hospitals and schools, starvation and spreading disease through cutting off utilities to the citizens of Gaza... Israel needs to be punished!
Gazans will survive and Israel will have to make peace if it wants to survive...
Shalom!
While I cannot condone the Hamas inspired (or led?) attacks on Israel...the Israeli response to human suffering will allow for a more accurate picture of the situation to emerge (maybe this time I say cynically) and then...then Israel should have a great deal of explaining to do- and consequences to bear.
A measured response seems unlikely from either side now that blood is flowing freely...but Israel does seem trigger happy even when it's harshly imposed conditions in Gaza clearly add fuel to the fire, not to mention decades of various harsh measures that never make matters better in any way.
Two words...........Fuck Israel
Two words...........And America!
two more words.............And Bush!
Here Hosni Mubarrak exposes his dependence on the west for his stay in power. He cannot piss on the west without jeopardizing his dictatorial power.
Oh my! This is a surprise. An Arab country not helping the Palestinians. Again. Go figure.
I said this the first day of the assault.
No one is going to help. No Arab country is going to lift a finger. Hezbollah is not going to fire missles. Abbas is going to negotiate. Europe will complain, but do nothing. The US will do nothing and will block the Security Council. Why? Because the governments of the entire world are tired of Hamas and their BS. Behind the scenes, there aren't many tears at the fate of Gaza at this point.
All you are going to get is Carter writing an open letter and a few thousand protestors world wide. Nothing.
If we want to get peace in the ME, we have to get rid of terrorists. Once they are gone, then there can be progress, but with missles falling on Israel, there can be no peace.
No peace, no justice!
Israel is the bastard child of the imperial empires of Britain and the US. Zionist extremists have sown the seeds of it's own inevitable destruction. As the US empire crumbles and the funding drys up, Israel will remain alone, surrounded by the wolves it has arrogantly provoked. Wolves are smart, they wait for their victims to weaken. Meanwhile they watch, and wait.
" Wolves are smart, they wait for their victims to weaken. Meanwhile they watch, and wait."
Israel's gonna be in deep shit when the US will be unable to ship more WMDs to them and if that doesn't do, Peak Oil will certainly put a damper. Hmmm, maybe better to keep the hemp ban until the wolves get their revenge, no?
Notice how brown shirts such as Goose4 praise dictators such as Mubarak who are worse than even Hamas and yet he still blames only Hamas for everything. Hamas is evil just like Mubarak but the problem Goose4 has with Hamas and Hugo Chavez is they were DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED unlike dictators such as Mubarak. I cannot be surprised that the US backs dictatorships given that it has shredded its own Constitution.

errr hezbollah did fire rockets mr Nastradamus. the entire world is not the usa and its allies and is mostely sick of this evil empire and its murderous warmongering.
why don't you go stick your fat ego away and open your heart. humans do not deserve to be brutalized - no matter what.
no justice, no peace!
Why should corrupt dictatorial regimes that are our allies want any liberation movement to take a foothold--Arab or not.
Don't see any Jews trying to free Israel from the stranglehold of the Likud Right....if you want to be tribal about these things.
Transparent Israeli and Israeli-firster talking points: Slaughter Palestinians and then claim everything is because of Hamas.
Don't think for a minute we don't see through it and others are catching on out here.
What happens when the consensus of the US man on the street is the same as it is in Europe?
yea your right get rid of the terrorists starting with the israeli ones. israel broke the cease fire (4 nov). they are always looking for a fight cos they know any peace means giving up land in the west bank and jerusalem something that they refuse to do.
you can not expect a terrorised and occupied people to garantee the safty of the occupation??
as you so elequently put it BS. you can not have peace by starving people and then breaking the cease fire and then blaming them for fighting back. terrorist is just a word like sh*tbag and can be used to describe just about anyone using violence on innocents. There is NO justification what at all for bombing people in their own homes
No justice no peace.
You mean the Isreali terrorists of course, right?
why would Israel give permission to allow any humanitarian aid into gaza when all it wants is for everyone to be killed; which takes care of the "problem". shame on you Israel!
" Where are the international humanitarian institutions, like the UN?"
This is where:
U.N. suspends aid work in Gaza
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/01/08/israel.gaza/index.html
Quote
The move comes after a U.N. Relief and Works Agency truck driver was killed and two other people were wounded by an Israeli tank shell near the Erez Crossing, said Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the U.N. agency in Gaza.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli military said it is not aware of the attack but said Hamas militants sometimes have targeted U.N. aid trucks to take food.
UNQUOTE
I didn't know Hamas had tanks. its amazing the BS that flows from these spokespeoples' mouths unquestioningly onto the pages of the "news".
