Police Break Up Anti-War Meeting in Washington
WASHINGTON - Mounted police charged in to break up an outdoor press conference and demonstration against the Iraq war in Washington on Thursday, arresting three people, organizers and an AFP reporter said."The police suppressed the press conference. In the middle of the speeches, they grabbed the podium" erected in a park in front of the White House for the small gathering, Brian Becker, national organizer of the ANSWER anti-war coalition, told AFP.
"Then, mounted police charged the media present to disperse them," Becker said.
The charge caused a peaceful crowd of some 20 journalists and four or five protestors to scatter in terror, an AFP correspondent at the event in Lafayette Square said. No one appeared to have been hurt.
Three people -- Tina Richards, the mother of a marine who did two tours of duty in Iraq; Adam Kokesh, a leader of the Iraq Veterans Against the War group; and lawyer Ian Thompson, who is an organizer for ANSWER in Los Angeles -- were arrested, Becker said.
The ANSWER coalition is trying to rally support for an anti-war demonstration in Washington that is due to take place on September 15.
Last month, the movement was threatened with a fine of at least 10,000 dollars unless it removed posters in the city announcing the September 15 march.
Washington city authorities have said the posters had to come down because they were stuck on with adhesive that did not meet city regulations.
"At our demonstration today we were showing the media that the paste we use conforms to the rules," Becker said.
"One of our activists was making a speech when the police barged in and grabbed the podium. At that point, Tina Richards started to put up a poster, so they arrested her and two others."
"This strategy of suppression has not worked. We expect many tens of thousands of people" in Washington for the September 15 anti-war demonstration, he said.
The march has been timed to coincide with the release of a report by the US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, and will be part of a week of protests led by veterans of the Iraq war.
A petition calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, allegedly carrying one million signatures and endorsed by former US attorney general Ramsey Clark, will also be submitted to officials during the week's activities, ANSWER has told AFP.

Show AllThis sucks. As it usually sucks when people are arrested for no reason. But what will the protests in D.C. do? I am all for people gathering for a cause. People need to start taking action though. I have attended multiple protests in D.C. against the war. The first one I attended before the war started there must have been 100,000 people. There were enough people that if everyone just sat down in the street and said they weren't going to get up till our representatives said they would not go to war, it would have been a historic day. Either it would have made a huge statement that 100,000 people were willing to peacefully go without food, bathroom, water, till the right choice was made, or police would have tried to arrest 100,000 people which also would have made a huge impact on national and international opinion of the war. Both results would have been historic and everyone in this country would know about it and remember it. Untill the leaders of these protests take some substantial peaceful action other than walking around the capital and going home.... Not much will happen with our representatives or the public at large.
P.S. much of the anti-war movement is Democrat and they are too attachted to the established party to really push for change in fear of hurting the Dems.
Yes, the QPP tried to incite a riot to instigate mass arrests of peaceful protesters in Quebec. Protesters who were there to speak out against Calderon of Mexico, Bush and Harper. Free speech is dead. Freedom is dying. Fascism is again on the rise.
-YOU- LET THIS HAPPEN!
The American people have no-one but themselves to blame. Live with it, die with it. It's your legacy to the world that you allowed this hate-filled psycho loose upon the world.
We need to defend the Constitution. We need it restored. Isn't this what we claim our armed forces are supposed to fight for?
I was going to vote for Barack Obama, but I believe Ron Paul is the only candidate who will try to stop the US from policing the world, and get us out of Iraq.
If Ron Paul was pro corporation, the big news corporations wouldn't be trying to stonewall him the way they did Ralph Nader.
Check out Ron Paul at the Fox debate. He points out we are building 14 bases in Iraq. How would we feel if China did that here. And we wonder why they hate us. http://www.digg.com/videos/comedy/Ron_Paul_at_the_Fox_Debates
Bill Maher says Ron Paul is his new hero http://youtube.com/watch?v=WUYDt7kC3Z0&mode=related&search=
I would also like to recommend watching "Why We Fight." A film about the US Military Industrial Complex. "The Money Masters" and "America Freedom to Fascism" on the Federal Reserve.
As I understand it, there's going to be a die-in for the fallen US soldiers and Iraqis in DC on Saturday along with the march, rally, etc. On the website (Sept15.org), they warn that anyone who signs up to participate in the die-in is risking arrest.
Has anyone been involved in an act of civil disobedience that led to an arrest? What could one expect? Are there any lasting consequences that we should be aware of? What kind of fine could I expect to be issued?
I'd like to add, though, that I understand what's at stake here is certainly more important than saving my own behind. Just want to make sure I bring enough cash for bail ;)
Glad this made the French News. The world sees what kind of "democracy" we have in our own capital. It also shows the world that We the People are resisting this fascist regime.
"Be the Peaceful, Love Thy Enemies"
'Thus the secret came out and was also documented by the cameras: "Arabized" [Israeli] undercover soldiers had been sent into action. These started throwing stones at the [Israeli] security people in order to provide them with a pretext to attack us [peaceful demonstrators]. The moment they were uncovered, they turned on the demonstrators nearest to them, drew revolvers, and started to arrest them. Later on, when it became clear that the events had been recorded by foreign television crews, the [Israeli] police officially confirmed that throwing stones is the method used by "Arabized" [Israeli] undercover soldiers so as to merge with the [peaceful] crowd.'

The one war wound that none dare mention its name is the loss of male genitalia. Hemingway wrote of this in "The Sun Also Rises" based upon his World War One experiences. We need a wounded veteran stationed outside every recruiting office to let potential enlistees know that war is not all parades, patriotic slogans and songs but the permanent loss of lives, limbs, minds, vision, and yes genitals. Many who dodged the draft realized these dangers and that is why they avoided serving in any war despite favoriting it provided others do the fighting.

Here's a new one. The air force stands down all combat operations on the 14th from that nuke fiasco earlier this week. Next we go marching on Washington on the 15th. The terrorists are waved in to attack the march. Bush declares marshal law and the TVs all say how there should be no more dissent now that the terrorists have attacked the protesters.
Have a nice day. See you Saturday.

This message is in response to Terry B. This is why the world is so dysfunctional. There is no question amongst any sane, moral, humane person on this planet that the Bush Administration (not necessarily George) is the absolute worst collection of (elected) officials ever in existence. No debate. What is tearing us apart is the fact that we are divided. USA and Canada are arguing over which country is better or worse concerning each other's neo-con dictatorship. We both need to rally and vote together as far as the Kyoto Treaty, the Iraq War and Global Warming goes. Please let's not argue over which leader is worst, which sometimes becomes personal. I must feel smug because I NEVER voted for Bush. What we are actually fighting is 'corporate control of politics'. I heard that phrase coined once by someone lightyears more intelligent than myself and feel compelled to share.

Does anyone here have any insight into the 6 nuke bombs that were transported on a B52 to Louisiana? This could NOT have been a mistake by the Air Force. It's not possible. Also, why would the Air Force declare to the world that they are going to "stand down" on Sept. 14th? Any connection to the anti war rallies in DC on Sept 15th? The break-up and arrests at this rally indicate that the DC power mongers aren't going to stand for the demonstration on the 15th. I smell a rat, but I can't put the pieces together.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Hey there Reb,
Believe it or not there is no connection. The rat though might be real.
Relax!
magicalnet - I am three hours south of you. The Monterey area would be more convenient. I checked with the League of Women Voters, United for Peace and Justice ( http://unitedforpeace.org/index.php ) and the Sept. 15 March on Washington ( http://www.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=S15_homepage ) sites for more locations and couldn't find any. I'll try to be there in Berkeley. I attended that school eons ago, so maybe it would be nice to visit.
From the Sept. 15 March site:
"Veterans for Peace E-Bulletin
A plea from Adam Kokesh:
"Protesting is not enough!"
Join VFP in Washington September 15
"Dear Veterans for Peace,
"As many of you are aware, the next big mobilization of anti-war protestors is going to be in Washington, DC on September 15th. However, you may not be aware of the significance of this particular demonstration. Tina Richards of Grassroots America and I have been working extensively with the ANSWER Coalition to make sure that this is not just another protest. We have made the theme, 'Protesting is not enough. Come for the rally, stay for a week of direct action.'
"To kick off the week of action, after the rally we will march from the White House to the Capitol, and go straight into a mass civil-disobedience die-in around the Peace Monument. The die-in will be led by an Honor Guard of Iraq Veterans Against the War who will simulate a 21-Gun Salute before taps is played to initiate the die-in. We are asking as many members of VFP as possible to sign up to wear cammies and die-in around us to symbolize the American cost of this war. We will be encircled by bolts of red cloth to symbolize the Iraqi deaths and invite anyone else from the rally to participate in the die-in." Read the full letter'
This really raises the ante. One day might be emotionally satisfying, but a whole week/month etc. of direct action is what Adam is calling for. I've got no doubt he's right. The media blackout requires this level of intensity. But even this protest appears pale compared to the kind of resistance that the Iraqis are having to mount. I shouldn't whine about a 3-hour drive - indolent, self-satisfied, myopic American that I am.
For those in the SF Bay Area that can't make it to DC. there's a rally at People's Park in Berkeley on the 15th also. Come early, stay late. See you there!
I will be thinking of you all at the demonstration. Don't be afraid of stand for your rights. The world is watching you. A poster with "Petition for redress of grievances" sounds about right. Good Luck!
The fight for our Constitution which has been suspended by the New World Fascist Bush, is gonna be a long fight for our freedom here at home. As We demand an end to this endless War which takes away our hope for the future while our good old Declaration of Independence tells us it is our Duty to alter and abolish this endless oppression....We will win! This has and will continue to be a long fight for Justice, Peace and Freedom which has been out sourced to the chaos of this regime's invasion and destruction of civilizations over seas and now here at home.
We the people will never surrender, no matter how long it takes.
Love, Jim
willy and thomrick, t.y. you both have valid points. but i believe, that in general that our political system has more checks and balances than what you have in the u.s. your two party system. i believe, is more prone to corruption as they are all bought and paid for by corporate interests. you either get with the program or you get no funding, and it is damn near impossible to get elected. also you have to pander to the religious block. our seperation of church and state is not a problem. our current p.m. is a fundy, but he treads very carefully in that regard because he is currently running a minority government. he can get brougt down over one major contention with a vote of no confidence. a dictatorial government, what i think you are currently experiencing at the present moment would be extremly difficult to pull off here. we are not without our problems, but that is true in every country. we must all be vigilant. we have periodic corruption as well, but it is very limited. we also demand a social concience and that also comes with a price tag, but most of us feel it is money well spent. i hope eventually we can all overcome these problems, and i support all the good people in the u.s. in closing i mean no offence, but your current president and his administration are the sickest pile of shit that i have ever experienced in my lifetime., and i am not a young man. i wish you all the best in the future, and i hope you can turn things around. the best to you. terry
Do you think the phrase "assemble to petition for redress of grievances" sounds even familiar to them???

Five to One baby,
One in Five,
No-one here gets out alive.
They got the guns,
We got the numbers,
Gonna make it baby if we try.
I'm afraid, and that fear is telling me I must go. I'm more afraid that if I don't go I'll lose whatever self-respect I have left. Then my freedom and my grandson's future.
The one in January before the invasion was easy becuase the police state wasn't apparent yet. This is different. Will be going with the expectation I'll get my head bashed in or worse.
Sit down, shup up, do what we tell you, sign this confession.
Never, never, never, never, never, and by the way-
FUCK YOU.
Mind-blowing Marikken!
Is it fascism yet? Im glad I will be safely dead soon.
hey terry........where you out of the country when the quebec police had members dress up as riotors with rocks in their hands and pretend to be hostile towards their comrades in terminator gear? they were there to incite a riot if need be so as to allow a group of peaceful protesters to be attacked! both our countries are going to hell in a handbasket....oh wait a minute....cant use the basket....it was made in china and has been recalled......
The way things go, pretty soon an isolation chamber will be designated as a free-speech zone.
And a torture chamber will be referred to as a water-boarding school.
Clearly we have a surplus of democracy here in the US. Bush would need to export democracy more often, more vigorously.
"So Bushy….what is this "Freedom" you often speak of"
It's "fuhreedom", as in fuhrer.
Good Luck on the 15th wish I could be there, though they'd probably send me to Gitmo being a foreigner an all.
Every couple of years you hear a rumor or urban legend about a semi/tractor-trailer that's overturned going through your state, spilling hundreds of signs reading "martial law" and similar warnings.
I wonder if those rumors have actually been true, and every city has a cache of martial law signs hidden within its limits?
Rebel Farmer..That base in Louisiana is a jump off point for the Middle East. Check out prisonplanet.com. Also heard that some army group out of Florida has been dispatched to DC...sorry, can't remember the details. I'm doing my best to be in DC on the 15th..pass the word.
I read somewhere (don't ask me where) that units of the 82nd Airborne were deployed to Wash, DC last week for unknown reasons. Curiouser and curiouser.
These police state tactics are not a surprise to most of us, but may be to the 'murrikan sheeple next week if the hammer comes down and it gets ANY coverage by the MSM. Bring your video cameras to the demonstrations and not only in DC. Find your local place of protest. Let's really hit the streets for once. It's time to stand up before it's too late (if it's not already, but don't let that stop you, pleeeeze)

"WE LOVE THE POLICE STATE"
Mock Pro-War Rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
With the anti-war movement in Milwaukee lacking a
significant and consistent showing, when the Milwaukee
police department tickets motorists who drive by
anti-war rally's and honk in support of the
protesters, in a time when the war is televised like a
sporting event, a small group of Milwaukee artists,
musicians, and outcasts decided to stage a mock
pro-war rally to subvert the right!
The street theater action was committed on April 4th
in near blizzard conditions when 20 "fanatical
pro-war" supporters occupied the opposite side of the
downtown street to rally in support of the war and
oppose of the peace activists who gather every Friday
for the weekly peace vigils.
The 20 "pro-war" supporters dressed in suits, waved
American flags and chanted slogans in fierce support
of war, death, and killing. Rush hour traffic drove
by and honked in approval to the flags and signs that
read: "Freedom Is The Enemy", "Get A Brain Morans",
Iraq Out Of Iraq", "Draft My Child", "Send Our
Infants", "Soccer Moms For Blood", "War Is Peace",
"I'm Pro-Life And Pro-Death", "Stop Reporting The
Facts", "Peace Is For Pussies", "Bush Is The Savior",
"This Is No Time For Thinking", "Pro-Bush Lesbian",
and "Ask Me About My Baby Killing Honor Student" among
other slogans.
Before the event the local media were called and told
about the "Clear Channel" sponsored pro-war rally.
The reporters failed to get an interview from the
pro-war fanatics because every time they approached
the demonstrators they chanted "Boycott The Liberal
Media!". The riot cops were very confused by the
heartfelt chants of "We Love The Police State!". And
the anti-war protesters were perplexed by the "All We
Are Saying Is Give Death A Chance" chorus.
A few on-lookers with their jaws dropped may indeed
never visit Milwaukee again, but all told the
"Pro-War" reaction was a smashing success that
demonstrates the kind of gung-ho patriotism that would
make George W. proud.
I've been planning on going to the Sept 15 march for about a month now (I even quit my job because they won't give me the weekend off, I'm not kidding), I've been hanging up posters and trying to get everybody I can think of to go.
All this did is make me want to try harder.
I will stand at the street corner and yell. I will carry signs and hang up posters like there is no tomorrow. I will give any cop that tries to obstruct my freedom of speech and assembly the finger.
"The thing with me and Bob and pretty much all of us was we hated rednecks more than anything else period because rednecks to us were pretty much America incarnate. And America...well, fuck America."
How about a PRO-WAR protest with posters of lots of bloody arab kids and parts thereof saying "kill them all, let God sort them out", posters of our great leaders with Bush in flight suit with codpiece, Cheney photo with halo, Halliburton, KBR, Lockheed, FOX News publicity posters, a bloody guy in loincloth, crown of thorns and carrying a cross, a Rabbi, an Ayatollah, cardboard jets and cannons, lots of American flags, etc.
Hang in there Adam. On the fifteenth you might want to know the Russian phrase for;
"Please don't hit me with that saber." It's a sure bet that Georgie the Brave and the other mutts in DC will order out the real cossacks next time.
Does anyone here have any insight into the 6 nuke bombs that were transported on a B52 to Louisiana? This could NOT have been a mistake by the Air Force. It's not possible. The battle (nonviolent) for free speech, free assembly, freedom to petition for redress of grievances needs to be fought here, so we wont have to fight it over there. I thank Adam Kokesh for his vigorous defence of the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
So, a dissident group sets up a small podium to issue a statement to the press; police goons on horses barge, almost badly injuring several members of the press, knock the podium over, rough the sepakers up and arrest them. The press scatters before they get arested too...
Is this:
Chile, 1975?
El Salvador, 1979?
Argentina, 1980?
Tianamen Square, 1989?
Romania, 1990?
No, the USA, 2007.
The US media puts a blackout on this incident. A google search revealed no US Mainstream media coverage of it outside of Indymedia and obscure bloggers. It's probably all the talk at every cafe in Paris, but the US people will remain ignorant, and wouldn't give a damn anyway.
Forget what I wrote earlier; maybe I will go to DC on Sept 15.
Here's a seven-minute clip showing what occurred in D.C. yesterday.

Looks like this could be a prelude to what's to come on the 15th.
Peace
Freedom of Speech in America; Don't you just love NYC?
Didn't George release a signing statement about that one?
Oh...he must have missed it, or couldn't read it, or forgot what country he represented...I don't know.
Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
So Bushy....what is this "Freedom" you often speak of?
The USA has become more and more like the Soviet Union we hated.
Once again the American KGB disperses the media and crowd and arrests dissidents.
terryb..No offence intended, but your PM did sign an agreement with King Bush to allow our soldiers in Canada..Did you have much say in that matter? And how about the NAU..what input did the Canadian citizen have? It's a virus the US military/industrial complex is spreading worldwide...I don't believe any country is immune. We all have to fight to retain and regain our rights.
what in the hell is happening in america. this shit, along with all the other civil rights violations, is not the america that used to be our neighbor to the south. i used to admire the freedoms and diversity of your country, as i do with us here in canada. we still have it here, i hope you get yours back. your friend to the north.
