Sunrise Demands Pelosi, Hoyer, Clyburn Un-Endorse Rep. Henry Cuellar Following Roe v. Wade Leak

Yesterday, an initial majority draft opinion circulated within the U.S. Supreme Court was leaked, revealing the Supreme Court is planning to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which guarantees federal constitutional protections of abortion rights.

Today, Sunrise Movement Executive Director, Varshini Prakash, released the following statement, regarding the Democratic leadership’s continued support of anti-choice Democrat Henry Cuellar:

“I am sad, and I am angry. This ruling is horrifying, and we know that this is just the beginning. The right-wing Supreme Court is inciting violence on our bodies, billionaires are buying and selling our freedom, and we are anticipating another upcoming SCOTUS ruling that will gut the Clean Air Act. They're not going to stop, so neither can we. We delivered a Democratic trifecta. Now, we must force them to use their power to protect our bodies and democracy.

“We can’t do that when the Democratic Party continues to support anti-choice candidates. Roe v. Wade is being overturned, and still Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn have no problem campaigning for their friend, Rep. Henry Cuellar, an adamantly anti-choice politician. Rep. Clyburn is literally traveling to San Antonio for a fundraiser and rally with Cuellar tomorrow – it’s shameful. Our leaders on reproductive rights are actively looking the other way as Jessica Cisneros, an inspiring, young Latina is fighting for our right to choose and their values.

“Right now, young people need to know Democrats are fighting for them. If Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn really want to lead in this moment, they must un-endorse Rep. Henry Cuellar and back Jessica Cisneros for TX-28.”

This week, Sunrise is pushing its membership to donate to abortion funds, and continues to phonebank for Jessica Cisneros in an attempt to oust anti-choice candidate Henry Cuellar. On Wednesday, they will have a joint phonebank with NARAL in support of Jessica.
