Sunrise Movement Endorses Green New Deal Champion Nina Turner

Today, Sunrise Movement announced their first major congressional endorsement of 2021, endorsing State Senator Nina Turner for Congress in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District. Sunrise backed Senator Turner for her resolute allyship and work with climate, racial, and economic justice movements, as well as her unwavering support for the Green New Deal, making it one of her campaign platform priorities.

“For years, Nina Turner has been a champion for people everywhere on a myriad of issues impacting our communities – all while inspiring so many to join the fight for what they believe in. Now, it’s time for us to have her back,” said Shanté Wolfe, Electoral Politics Director for Sunrise Movement. “Ohio’s 11th deserves a Congresswoman who will be a fierce advocate for the Green New Deal and progressive policies amidst the twin economic and climate crises we’re facing. Nina is that leader – she understands what our communities are going through and is not afraid to stand up and work against the tide when it comes to helping her people.”

“I am honored to have the endorsement and support of the Sunrise Movement. We must fight for environmental justice and these bold and progressive leaders have called us to take immediate and necessary action on climate chaos. I am excited about their vision to protect Mother Earth. Together we are going to organize around an economy that is free of fossil fuels, creates the jobs of the future (with dignity) and addresses the existential threat of Climate Change by passing a Green New Deal," said congressional candidate for Ohio’s 11th, Nina Turner, in response to the endorsement.

Sunrise first worked with Nina Turner when she became President and the public face of OurRevolution in 2016. In 2019, Sunrise again partnered with Nina when she joined the Sanders campaign as a co-chair and the group recognizes her as a key player in advocating for a climate debate after Sunrisers protested outside the DNC in support of one. Sunrise now plans to support the Turner campaign until election day through fundraising and social media pushes, political coordination, and by using a mass army of young people to phonebank and organize on the ground in Ohio.

This comes as Sunrise Movement has cemented itself as a strong electoral player. In 2020, Sunrise contacted over 6.5 million voters in the primaries and general election creating the largest youth turnout in history. This led to not only the victory of Biden and the Senators in Georgia, but the victory of Green New Deal leaders across the country, including Senator Ed Markey, Reps. Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, and more

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
