Earthjustice Statement on Anti-Environment Interior Appropriations Bill

Bill would place public health, wilderness, endangered species at risk

WASHINGTON

Today, Earthjustice's Vice President of Policy and Legislation Martin Hayden released the following statement in opposition to the House's Interior and Environment Appropriations bill:

"Once again, House Republican leaders have stuffed the Interior appropriations bill to the gills with devastating budget cuts and anti-environment policy provisions that have nothing to do with spending bills. Among the massive giveaways to wealthy corporate polluters they've hidden in this must-pass bill: over $100 million in cuts to the EPA and conservation initiatives at the Department of the Interior and poison pill riders that attack clean water, public health and endangered species while attempting to fast-track drilling off our coasts and near treasured wilderness areas.

"Instead of listening to the broad array of voices speaking out against this bill, Republican leadership rushed the process with political stunts designed to avoid controversial votes on important issues like drilling in the Arctic Natural Wildlife Refuge. They've shown time and time again that they'll stop at nothing to advance big polluters' radical agenda.

"The House should reject this special interest wishlist and focus on protecting our water, air, wildlife, wilderness and people."
