Explosion in Jellyfish Numbers May Lead to Ecological Disaster, Warn Scientists
Global warming has long been blamed for the huge rise in the world's jellyfish population. But new research suggests that they, in turn, may be worsening the problem by producing more carbon than the oceans can cope with.
Dr Carol Turley, a scientist at Plymouth University's Marine Laboratory, said the research highlighted the growing problem of ocean acidification, the so-called "evil twin" of global warming. (Image: wiki commons) Research led by Rob Condon of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in the US focuses on the effect that the increasing numbers of jellyfish are having on marine bateria, which play an important role by recycling nutrients created by decaying organisms back into the food web. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, finds that while bacteria are capable of absorbing the constituent carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other chemicals given off by most fish when they die, they cannot do the same with jellyfish. The invertebrates, populating the seas in ever-increasing numbers, break down into biomass with especially high levels of carbon, which the bacteria cannot absorb well. Instead of using it to grow, the bacteria breathe it out as carbon dioxide. This means more of the gas is released into the atmosphere.
Dr Carol Turley, a scientist at Plymouth University's Marine Laboratory, said the research highlighted the growing problem of ocean acidification, the so-called "evil twin" of global warming. "Oceans have been taking up 25% of the carbon dioxide that man has produced over the last 200 years, so it's been acting as a buffer for climate change. When you add more carbon dioxide to sea water it becomes more acidic. And already that is happening at a rate that hasn't occurred in 600 million years."
The acidification of the oceans is already predicted to have such a corrosive effect that unprotected shellfish will dissolve by the middle of the century."
Condon's research also found that the spike in jellyfish numbers is also turning the marine food cycle on its head. The creatures devour huge quantities of plankton, thus depriving small fish of the food they need. "This restricts the transfer of energy up the food chain because jellyfish are not readily consumed by other predators," said Condon.
The increase in the jellyfish population has been attributed to factors including climate change, over-fishing and the runoff of agricultural fertilisers. The rise in sea temperature and the elimination of predators such as sharks and tuna has made conditions ideal, and "blooms" – when populations explode in great swarms, sparking regular panics on beaches around the world– are being reported in ever-increasing size and frequency. Last year scientists at the University of British Columbia found that global warming was causing 2,000 different jellyfish species to appear earlier each year and expanding their number.
The proliferation of jellyfish has caused problems for seaside power and desalination plants in Japan, the Middle East and Africa. The blooms are also perilous to swimmers; the effects of a jellyfish sting range across the species from painless to tingling to agony and death.

Show AllMy own experience with jellyfish stings was horrific, so I am all for exterminating the bastards. Is there an efficient, eco-friendly way to do so?
Oh, wait. Thou shalt not kill. So, the eternal Buddhist dilemma arises again. The classic story is a monestary completely infested with cockroaches, and the dharma masters fiercely resisting calling the exterminator. In the end, they relented, prayed for the souls of the roaches, and gassed the sobs.
It would make too much sense to just reduce over-fishing and the runoff of agricultural fertilisers.
Here's an ecological problem that we can partly control. Bring back the tuna. Raise thousands of tuna fingerlings in protected, netted coves. Bringing back sharks and sea turtles will also help.
I got stung in Hawaii once...my local friend told me to pee in my hand and rub it on the sting to stop the pain...
it worked...
So does meat tenderizer and vinegar.
I don't know about Florida, but every year along the Texas coast, and at varying times, the beaches get absolutley covered by Portugese Men-of -War, and you betcha, those damn things sting like crazy.
You know, you can pile positive feed-back mechanism on top of positive feed-back mechanism , until one starts to get the impression that this may not turn out well.
Yep, Business As Usual will continue until it can't, as there is no Civil Society on the planet capable of stopping it. We've reached the point where we either kill off the Barbarians or wait to experience collapse--a fact that's been plain to see since the century's beginning.
them's two rather short sentences that say a hell of a lot more than most writings posted here in a year...
for those reading, notice there is no mention of representational politics...
we, the people, must retaliate on our own behalf, or perish...
Another prophet of doom. Will those scientists ever tire of clouding my beliefs with facts. Everyone knows it's a natural cycle, and anyway, there are no jellyfish is heaven.
Big tough dudes on big boats love to use big nets to dredge up unsustainable quantities of "food". Let them fish something new and pay 'em by the ton.
These things are like 99.9% water. I can't imagine anything eating them and getting any appreciable food value before being too full of water for another bite.
And their DNA is over 90% the same as humans., Maybe we should make contact.
Chances are they are more intelligent than their two legged cousins. Have you hugged a jellyfish today?
"And their DNA is over 90% the same as humans.,"
Fascinating. I always thought that they resembled brains with spinal-like tentacles as they manuever through the sea.
they don't have much food value, you are correct...
that is why you combine them with the much more nutritious peanutbutterfish...
dang
I was going to suggest employing Monsanto to figure out a way to genetically alter jellyfish to where their stinging cells produce grape juice rather than venom. That way, we could combine your peanutbutter fish with the grape jellyfish, slap them between a couple of breadfish fillets, and have a mariculture created peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich.
On second thought, this just doesn't sound quite as tasty as the original deal. Maybe if we added banana fish?
LOL
Sounds fishy to me.
Actually, if you cook them with sesame, they are fairly tasty, and have the consistency (and appearance) of gummi-bears. Try it next time you go to dim sum.
Explosion in Jellyfish Numbers In US Congress May Lead to Ecological Disaster, Warn Scientists
Dat's de fact
LOL!! Exactly!!
You would think those Apocalyptic Fascists that Christ "would know not" would be paying attention to the accumulation of these Biblical-like plagues. But then of course that would mean acting as "good stewards" and that ain't gonna happen. Great comment, jclientelle ;-)
Get use to it. Screwing up our biosphere, screws up the whole integrated system. It's all downhill from here.
Explosion of jellyfish numbers IS an ecological disaster!
Yep, this is a fact. No need to use wiggle words here.
Once again I must comment that this seemingly scientific contribution is wothless without telling me by which factor the jellyfish population has increased since when and a breakdown of these factors according to regions of the globe. Why does CD fall again-and-again for these pseudo-scientific non-quantitative scribblings?
Crowsnest, your response is unscientific and filled with accusation and judgement. And what % of CD articles are pseudo scientific; and if so many are, why do you bother reading them.
If you would like more lengthy scientific reports, there are better places than CD.
That it is not a scientic journal in no way detracts from the ideas presented here.
As people age they seem to regress to infancy. The biosphere seems to be aging rapidly and regressing to life's origins.
Our South Florida beaches were recently and abnormally plagued by tons of Man O' War with very toxic stings. Deadly Box Jellyfish have been found there too.
Its not nice to fool with Mother Nature

My heart aches for the ocean and its creatures.
No more coral reefs. Only empty water.
I will never understand why the crisis in biodiversity loss isn't front page news every single day.
hey, tiddas!
you say:
~ I will never understand why the crisis in biodiversity loss isn't front page news every single day. ~
I agree...
I find it darkly amusing to see what lame story my local rag leads with on any given day, knowing it will be of only minimal substance...
Fukushima? What's that?
A new electric car model?
An insult to Shima?
..why the crisis in biodiversity loss isn't front page news every single day...
Look who owns the publishing and what they stand for.
maybe genetic/engineer, cutting edge researchers could alter their flavor to taste like strawberries........
then we could eat peanut butter and jelly-fish sandwiches......
yum!....
sorry, missed the previous p/nut butter post......
Back in the Sixties when I still socialized and was living in Manhattan, somehow I ended up on a powerboat in the Chesapeake Bay on a summer evening. The dock supports had all sorts of crabs and other organisms and one had a sense of marine fecundity.
When the boat took off and headed out, the propeller chopped up the massive overpopulation of jellyfish, leaving a trail of luminescence in its wake. It was an incredibly beautiful experience. It was explained to me then that the jellyfish overpopulation was due to fertilizer runoff and was threatening the entire Bay by de-oxygenation. Evidently, jellyfish need less oxygen than less "primitive" organisms:
"... Instead of using it to grow, the bacteria breathe it out as carbon dioxide. ..."
Meanwhile, it strikes me that the variety of "stings" suggests a very complex chemistry that probably has enormous medical potential (a parallel would be snake venom...). Instead of killing porpoises and whales and seals, and tuna..., maybe we should be harvesting jellyfish.
Somehow, I am not surprised that the invertebrates are winning.

In '56 I swam into a man-o-war in Key West. I caught one tentacle and it felt like and looked like I had been whipped with a red hot wire.
Another guy swam into the body of it. He went into a coma on the way to the hospital. I don't know if he made it or not. Very unpleasant, those critters.
And so for 10 million years the cockroahes ruled terra firma and the jellyfish ruled oceana. The treaty of 2025 established the shoreline a nuetral zone that none shall cross, which was a rather silly treaty because everyone knew jellyfish couldn't walk and cockroaches got sea sick, but they thought it best to put it in writing anyway. Content to be rid of the pesky but short lived,"plague of humans," they lived in peace for millions of years.Till one day a young cockroach spyed a fair young jellymaiden basking offshore. "This is intollerable" the fathers (they weren't too careful about bloodlines) of the young cockroach roared, " cockroaches do not fall for jellyfish! are you crazy?" "Maybe" said the young cockroach," but you can't stop us". Despite dire warnings, the young lovers met discretly on the shores edge and soon a new race emerged, a slimy mix of crawling gooey critters that thrived, multiplied, mutated and eventually dominated both land and sea. Once again the earth was ruled by a bunch of jelly faced cocks. And so it goes.
ha! excellent...

Hmmm, wonder why my post questioning 'global warming' rather than greedy corporations using the waterways and oceans as a dumping ground, along with the Navy's 5 yr. war exercise plan that will destroy as many as 11 million sea mammals being the REAL culprits, was removed???? Who's running Common Dreams??
