Nobel Honours Man Who Told Bush to "Please Go Away"
NEW YORK - Paul Krugman, a professor at Princeton University who is best known for his New York Times columns -- frequently involving scathing assaults on the policies of the George W. Bush administration -- was awarded the 2008 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his research on international trade and economic geography.
"To be absolutely, totally honest I thought this day might come someday, but I was absolutely convinced it wasn't going to be this day," Krugman, a 55-year-old U.S. national, said in an interview with The Times Monday.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which administers the award, said it was bestowed on Krugman "for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity".
"This was definitely a 'real world' pick and a nod in the direction of economists who are engaged in policy analysis and writing for the broader public," Tyler Cowen, professor of economics at George Mason University, commented on his weblog "Marginal Revolution".
Krugman found new ways to explain what goods are produced where, and how capital and labour are distributed over countries and regions.
Most of the discussion going on on the Internet after the announcement of the prize committee, however, was not about Krugman's scientific achievement, but about the strong positions he took as a columnist, author and blogger.
Krugman served as an advisor to Bill Clinton's presidential campaign, and for a short time was a consultant to former president Ronald Reagan.
Back in 2000, a year after he joined The New York Times, Krugman spent a great deal of effort "trying to alert readers to the blatant dishonesty of the Bush campaign's claims about taxes, spending and Social Security", as he wrote in a column this year.
A staunch critic of the Iraq war, he has repeatedly cautioned against a potential victory for John McCain, the Republican contender in the Nov. 4 U.S. elections.
Just recently, Krugman stressed that "the Obama campaign is wrong to suggest that a McCain-Palin administration would just be a continuation of Bush-Cheney. If the way John McCain and Sarah Palin are campaigning is any indication, it would be much, much worse." Many observers are now wondering if the decision of the Swedish prize committee is sending a political message as well.
With recent publications, Krugman has influenced the arrangement of the federal plan to spend 700 billion dollars to cushion U.S. credit markets -- a topic he is long familiar with as his dissertation was on international finance.
Krugman received his B.A. from Yale University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1977. He went on to teach at Yale, MIT and Stanford, and is now a professor at Princeton University in New Jersey, where he gives a course on international monetary policy and theory.
Starting with a short article published in the Journal of International Economics in 1979, Krugman has lifted the theory of international trade to a new level. His theory explained the increasing trade between countries that produce the same kind of goods -- a phenomenom that has grown since World War II.
While traditional theories were based on differences among countries that make them specialise and trade with other countries, Krugman found an explanation why, for example, a car-producing country is not only exporting cars but also importing them.
First, it is about economies of scale: Because mass production diminishes the per unit price of production, it is lucrative for companies to produce many units of a specific good -- and therefore develop their own brand.
Second, it is about consumers' lust for diversity, especially in highly industrialised rich countries: They simply want to chose between a large number of brands.
So while one country may produce luxury cars, another one may build smaller vehicles. And due to lower prices and greater product diversity, wealth and prosperity are increasing for people in both countries.
With his "new economic geography", Krugman later showed that the distribution of work and capital across regions depends on the trade-off between utilising economies of scale and saving on transport costs. Today's process of urbanisation can be explained with Krugman's theory.
The domination of already successful, large countries can also be explained through his findings as economics of scale, lower prices and diversity of products are easier to achieve there.
Krugman is the ninth U.S. laureate of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in a row -- a prize that does not date back to Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896, but was created by the Swedish central bank in 1968.
He is also among a number of Nobel laureates who received the John Bates Clark medal, a renowned prize for young economists under age 40, which he won in 1991.

Paul was on O'Riley the clown recently. Bill typically told some lie and Paul said "That's a lie".
What happened next is what is wrong-has been wrong-with human discourse since time began. Bill, whose chair is five inches taller than the other chairs on the set, pointed a finger at him and growled "Don't call me a liar pal."
Anytime the truth touches a nerve some big, aggressive, dumbass threatens violence.
When Thurgood Marshall was on his way by train to D.C. to take his seat on the Supreme Court he was standing on the platform waiting for a connection when a local said "Nigger don't let the sun set on you in this town."
No matter how decent, intelligent, or superior in every way, ignorant muscle always trumps what is fair, right, true, and good. Just look at the last two elections for President.
O'Liley is none other than a NEOCON piece of shit, who was bought out with the money that Donnie Traitor Rumsfield stole from the Pentagon. I watched O'Liley call a preacher a liar on his show before. He is just another piece of shit WE WILL hang in the streets when we take back our country...... A fascist bastard named Rupert will be watching.
Coffeelover,,,,,,,,
The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for Paul Krugman - the Friedmanites and the Chicago Boys will be out of their minds with rage, not an unpleasant situation to watch. :)
RMG,
I forgot all about that Crazy Bunch!

*****AND, not being reported or blogged is, I tnink, those who get
a Nobel also receive a kool one million $$$$ purse !!
But Then, with all the Billions and Trillions $$$ floating around
nowadays==what the hell is a mere million $$$, especially to an
Economist like Krugman !!!! Geeze, I won $4.50 on a lotto ticket
a couple months back.
****I've got a Minor Degree in Economics from college and I've
always wondered WHY ???? I do know that those Professors never
taught today's overriding Econ Theory of The Big Bailouts !!!!!!
Credit Default Swaps, nothing else to say.
Krugman should get a Pulitzer for the referenced statement.
In the interview, Nobel Prize winning economist, Paul Krugman, suggested McCain/Palin might actually turn out to be worse than Bush/Cheney. What a horrifying thought. Us looking back on Bush’s Administration as the "Good Ol Days."
I've been keeping myself extraordinarily educated on the economics of the day by reading Paul Craig Roberts and Mike Whitney at counterpunch dot org.
I read almost every column and blog entry Paul Krugman produces.
But I find Roberts and Whitney much more thorough.
I encourage all my CD friends who wish to understand what's happening in the world of money to visit counterpunch and read these two writers.
And yes, I know that Roberts worked in the Treasury for Regan.
Here's Robert's most current piece:

You have to pay to read counterpunch, right? I dont seem to be able to access it....thanks
For a different view, read Lindorff or Cockburn on Krugman.

Bush joked about hitting the 'trifecta' --- and now he has.
Three US Nobel laureates in economics; Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof, and now Paul Krugman all agree on one thing --- that Bush has destroyed the US economy by waging multi-trillon dollar foreign wars, by giving away tax windfalls to the rich and corporations, by facilitating this multi-trillion dollar deregulated Wall Street bailout/give-away, and in the case of Akerlof "by an economic policy that is a form of looting".
Alan MacDonald
Yesterday, I sent Paul this nice congratulatory note to the NYTimes article comments blog --- but they filtered it out with their hybrid computer/human filtering of political 'No words', just because of the word 'Nader'
"Congratulations, Paul, on your Nobel.
What a wonderful Treasury Secretary you would make for President Nader."
[The following post also appeared on CrooksandLiars]:
When the dust settles on history past the present, it is always humanitarian, rational and liberal ideals that move civilization forward. History bears testimony to this.
Awards are almost always subjective, including those that bring high honor to great thinkers and creative spirits. Sadly, the Nobel prizes are no exception to this.
This is especially true with the Peace awards, and the occasionally even more dubious Economics awards (a later invention, as it turns out to be).
To think that former Nobel recipients include war criminals such as Henry Kissinger, discredited free-market-capitalism guru and grande-saboteur of (poor) people's movements, Milton Friedman, and the like-clearly even this high-profile award is prone to politics and woeful misjudgment.
Equally, the Nobel prize has also missed honoring many deserving individuals (in many cases, more so than several rather mediocre honorees)- Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Mahatma Gandhi- immediately come to mind.
Finally- I would like to express my overall admiration for Professor Krugman, if for nothing else, then simply for his consistent opposition to the Bush Crime Family and its deadly crime spree around the world. I agree with some of the correspondents here that "Economics" is a rather inexact science, and is prone to frequent errors and revisions. Even though a fellow-Bengali (Amartya Sen) won this award in 1998- I do not find economic theory particularly inspiring, imaginative, brilliant or exciting.
However- whenever a fighter against crime and injustice (especially on a global level) is honored- I am all for it. It happened with Harold Pinter, Al Gore and Jimmy Carter. I am awaiting similar and continuing recognitions for Michael Moore, Amy Goodman, Gore Vidal, John Pilger, Howard Zinn, Medha Patkar and other brave humanitarians.
In the mean time, my compliments to Professor Krugman.
Bring America Back !!!!
But, NO, Wolfgang===Amy Goodman must not receive a Nobel Prize until she
divulges exctly WHO told her , on 9/11, to report that Bldg 7 World Trade
Center had collapsed==while on live TV over her shoulder Bldg 7 can be
easily seen still standing---afterwards and magically Bldg 7 at 5:30pm on
9/11 fell into it's own construction footprint demolition style !!
*****The WHO of this question holds the real KEY to the attacks on those
bldgs in NYC, as well as in DC. Those persons who were the sources for
Amy Goodman knew well beforehand the Towers would similarly collapse that day !
No Nobel Prize for Amy Goodman until she finally comes clean !! And, if she
says a cave-dwelling boogieman and 19 airline pilot school flunkouts told
her==Do Not Believe Her !!!
Dear Amadeus:
I was not implying that all humanitarians receive the "Nobel" prize. That would in the long run trivialize the prize (which, I am afraid, it has already been). I was only expressing the hope that human society finds the means to honor those that work tirelessly to advance the cause of deprived, denigrated, tyrannized humanity. And, by the way- Amy Goodman has indeed been awarded exactly one such prize only a few weeks ago (the Right Livelihood Award).
As for your burning question regarding WTC building 7- well, I have never heard or seen before anything regarding Amy Goodman withholding some source information in this regard. If anything, AG has interviewed many guests holding opinions regarding the somewhat questionable circumstances surrounding the collapse of building 7. Many analysts raise the likelihood of (perhaps) government-sponsored controlled demolition. If so, then AG would be the very last person to willingly withhold information on government secrets. Her whole career is built upon shining light on government secrets, and fighting against government-sponsored and politically-motivated violence. She has shown extraordinary courage in her pursuit of objective journalism. I would not impugn AG's integrity by assigning to her the charge of some nefarious secret that is much more likely to be in the neo-con fact files. And, of course, if the implication is that AG is somehow culpable in the neo-con Pearl Harbor- well, I will not dignify that with any response.
Bring America Back !!!!
Well Monish, your nickname s/b Doubting Thomas. You certainly have some
devotion to "AG" !!!! For whatever reason............
But my friend, Amy's video is all over the Truth Movement REPORTING THE
COLLAPSE OF THE SALOMAN BROTHERS BUILDING==BEFORE IT COLLAPSED !!!! LIVE FROM
GROUND ZERO. If I thought you were really interested, I'd look up the links
and sites and give 'em to ya !! Esp that Video on 9/11 itself.
Now, talking heads are sometimes just that==most don't originate stories so
where, who, and when was the source of THAT STORY given to her to report ??
It used to be a polite request from Amy, but since she does not respond, we
in the Movement demand she divulge the source(s) of that information !!!!
To that extent she is a COVER, a Gateway so to speak, to the persons, places,
and means of pulling off 9/11. Building 7 is the Smoking Gun !!! Literally.
It is NOT somewhat controversial==it is critical and crucial.. It will come
out eventually, and if you are a true devotee' of Amy Goodman, you would do
her a service to encourage her to be the one to come out with the facts,
before she gets 'scooped' and then the egg on her face will be a lot more than
embarassing==in my estimation it will be a career event !!!!
Until then, NO Nobel for 'AG'==and she, above all, knows why .....
** ECONOMICS IS NOT A SCIENCE! **
The author of the article writes, "Most of the discussion going on on the Internet after the announcement of the prize committee, however, was not about Krugman's scientific achievement..."
ECONOMICS IS NOT A SCIENCE. Anything involving human behavior is not a hard science. Until physicists can explain consciousness and how the genes control human behavior, economics and - ESPECIALLY! - psychology will remain pseudo-sciences.
Economies are creations of the human mind, we are socialized and indoctrinated to view life a certain way in order to benefit the type of economy we grow up under, such as creating in us a desire for material possessions, for money, for fame, to be ruthlessly competitive, to be obedient to the system in order to get what we "want", etc.
Economies are not part of the natural or physical world - they are artificial creations! We did NOT evolve to serve economies or money. Economics is NOT, therefore, A SCIENCE.
Psychology is even less of a science. Psychology is largely a bloody joke.
Be careful - do you want economists and psychologists controlling our lives? Because they will, if we treat them like scientists.
With psychologists in charge, you will be told what jobs you are suitable for - other kinds of work, you will not be allowed to do.
Psychologists will also ARBITRARILY decide what we should all be like as human beings if we are to be regarded as "normal". Psychologists may becide CEOs are the ideal human. They are intelligent, successful, hard-working, productive members of society. What? You disagree? CEOs have no regard for human life, you say, and are quite happy to work with any dictatorship if it means increasing their company's profits? Sorry, but psychologists are the experts - NOT you! You're abnormal! You need counselling!
Nietzsche
All sciences have to start somewhere. Thought is a physical-chemical process which we will eventually, if we live long enough, discover.
Why the rant on psychologists??
Better than religious nutjobs.
No, they are not better than religious nutjobs. Certain dominant economists have given us the financial mess we are now paying for. They have decided we are "economic agents" motivated solely by money, and, therefore, any kind of social welfare is bad because it takes away incentives.
And will people stop blaming religion for everything. You think the invasion of Iraq was about religion? You think U.S. foreign policy is about religion? People use religion. Just because they say they are a Christian doesn't mean they are. Bush is an atheist.
"Economic psychologhists"? "Psychological economists"? WTF are you talking about?*
Bush is no atheist---he is the perfect calculation of where a person ( with a history of drug/alcohol abuse, being indulged all through life, then, still, being treated with grandiosity';). He thinks that he and his friends are rich because they deserve it--god wants it
Also, all of the car wrecks, all the fights, all the drugs--I think he has temporal lobe dadmage which can cause a "god complex".
He is the perfect embodiment of someone who has accepted christian evangelism as a way to atone for the shit youve thrown on society.
"He is the perfect embodiment of someone who has accepted christian evangelism as a way to atone for the shit you've thrown on society."
I have to disagree with this statement. You would have to believe that you had thrown shit on society in order to want to atone for it. Remember when he couldn't even say "fool me twice, shame on me"? Obviously he has no shame.
Actually his form of born-again Christianity allows him to continue to do whatever bad acts he wishes whilst believing that the mere acceptance of Jesus as his Lord and Savior will be his passport to heaven.
The idea promoted by St. Paul that one is "saved by grace not by works" is one that has been perverted to serve the needs of those who knowingly commit terrible crimes yet nonetheless count on receiving a clean slate on judgement day because of their faith.
"judgement day."...right...
The religious nutjobs are a problem because so many people think it gives them legitimacy.
To claim religion turns a nice person into a mass murderer is like blaming video games for Columbine and other shootings and aggressive behavior.
Humans are very complicated. Often, people shape their religion to suit their personalities - so, kind people have kind gods, while nasty people have vengeful gods. Kind people may also ignore the bad aspects of their religion, or try to interpret them in a way that makes them irrelevant. Some people claim to be religious, but have yet to realize they don't believe in anything - they have simply failed to break a habit that they started in childhood. If they gave it some real thought, they'd realize they don't have much faith at all.
I'm agnostic. If there is a creator, we don't know anything about it.
Extreme religiosity does not "change" people--it merely reveals them
Yes! Psychologists are the TRUE enemy!
They helped the intergalactic dictator Xenu to defeat the Loyal Officers and commit mass genocide against his 76 planets! The psychologists were there during the great Income Tax Inspections, to inject the populace with alcohol and gycol, load them onto interstallar DC8 jet planes and take them to the planet Teegeeack where they were scattered around the base of volcanoes! Psychologists also helped to invent the R6 implant, in order to confuse the Thetans and implant them with false notions about religion.
THANK YOU for attacking the *real* enemy: PSYCHOLOGISTS.
Ever read "Bush on the Couch"? Its good.
If Bush had gone to a competent PhD (he shoudl probably see a neurologist--I'm convinced he has damagae), instead of getting "saved", he might have been less fucked up OR a good psyh couldve helped hin realize that the "presidency" just was not his calling!!
Darn. I kind of liked Hari Seldon.
I remember a BushWatch way back in 2000. Some people were really ahead of the curve.
Instead of saying please go away-I wish he had said, just fuck off!
Anyway congratulations. Although its a cynical prize since Nobel was so shocked that he would be remembered as a weapon maker/killer that he threw some money he made from it to start an award so his name would be linked to positive things(except in the medical field where vivisection reigns-hardly peaceful, thus the reason Jane Goodall suggested a non torture/death medicine Nobel prize))
Krugman seems like a nice guy compared to the right wing extremists but he remains a pillar of the battlement on the left side of the elite fortress. It is the elites who need the people, not vice versa.
Well-deserved award to Dr. Krugman. It is refreshing to have such a brave, truth-telling soul in an MSM full of cowards and sheep.
Honestly, the only reason I clicked on this story is because I recognized him from his appearances on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. I always agree with what he says and he does seem to explain things in ways even I can understand. I never knew that he tried to warn the public about Bush back in '00, but that just makes it all the better, great choice. I agree, he'd be a great Secretary of the Treasury but it will never happen and he doesn't strike me as someone who'd want the job anyway.
Well, hell, I predicted Bush!! Want to kwow how?? god told me!! lol--kidding
Actually, my brother i law went to Yale with him. I even rejoined the Dem Party to try to keep him out. I knew we were fucked--but I didnt know it would be this bad.
Did you ever read Krugman's "Conscience of a Liberal" (sortve an answer to Goldwater's "Conscience of a Conservative") I disagree with his loyalty to capitalism, but, it is a very good book, and he maseks alot of common sense,
I agree he might not want the job, but I believe he has that sense of civic duty that is in most patriots that love their country and humanitarians that want to raise the condition of their fellow citizens. Krugman is both of these and I think he would do it if asked.
What a step up from Paulson who only seems to care for his Buds and that their pay doesnt get cut off.
Nietzsche
If I understood him correctly in a TV interview he wants the job
One theory is that the auto/oil/sprawl/construction cartels have worked together to insert 'transportation' in between everything we do. More centralization has lead to shopping malls, commuting to big office buildings, supermarkets, and more profits for the cartels. Ecocities - Richard Register - has a much more ecological design for cities, eliminating the wasteful and environmentally destructive transportation-based urban design we are burdened with. http://EcoCityBuilders.org
Also, check out http://CarFree.com ... http://PostCarbon.org ... http://FreePublicTransit.org.
Now that the climate is nearing tipping points which could put the Earth into irreversible catastrophic climate change, we should be mobilizing immediately to save civilization, and just forget about the old-school destructive cartel-based urban designs. http://ClimateEmergencyNetwork.org ... http://ClimateCodeRed.net ... http://CarbonEquity.info ... http://WakeUpFreakOut.org ...

He should be Obama's Sec Treas.
He's too sane and too wise for the job. As usual, it will go to some cunning alpha pirhana from Wall Street with the longest, sharpest teeth.
Congratulations to Dr. Krugman.
One of the few real economists writing to the common person versus the blubberheads on talk radio who constantly spout the "free-trade," "free-market" trickle-down bullshit that has got us in the current pickle. And what a pickle...
As for the question of timing of the award and whether it was political, I suggest that Dr. Krugman's politics derive from his economics and not the other way around; in other words his views are not ideologically driven, unlike the ignoramus in the White House. Over the years I have also noticed that Dr. Krugman retains a sense of humility, which is always a good thing.
I'm lovin it.
-30-
Congratulations Yes, and well deserved.
Always were fiesty and stood your ground.
Krugman has been one of my heroes for many years. He's had to deal with a large amount of hatred and anger from the right-wing nutcases, but always came through with his best analysis of economics and politics. He should be Obama's Sec Treas.
"He should be Obama's Sec Treas."
An excellent idea!

So, grab your remote, and look out for Ralph.
.
Hey Nannie,
Don't know if you noticed, but this article is about Krugman and his Nobel Prize, not about the election. We all know that you want us to vote for Nader. We'll think about it alright? But why don't you restrict your posts to the topic at hand?
If you dont want to read it, cant you just scroll past it? You could check out the site--or you could not. I do not see how it is hurting you
Nannie posted the same thing on every article from today.
I was just excited that the "POWERS THAT BE "decided to let a 3rd party have a few minutes on national TV. Whoo WHOO celebrate....
What a sad media we have in the US.
Next we will be hearing about McCain's bellybutton as opposed to Obama's Bellybutton
Most of us don't watch national media anyway.
Nader should be Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Labor, or Attorney General. Which one do you guys think?
Attorney General---let hin lock some of these basterds up. Overturn some of this GOP trash taht the Dems have allowed to be passed. Restore and amend our constitution. Restore civil liberties. Close GITMO. Uphold the Geneva Conventions.
It will probably not happen otherwise
