    No Bending the Knee Here

Like every authoritarian before him, Trump is working to co-opt news sources and control what the public sees and hears. Too many corporate outlets are bending the knee—but not Common Dreams. Education Victories Democrats Can Rally Around

Sorting through this week's humiliating defeat by Donald Trump at the polls, Democrats are having a hard time finding any bright spots in all the darkness. But Trump's victory was a very close one (he lost the popular vote) and may be easy to reverse in 2020 with a better campaign.

So amidst the dead ashes of defeat, where are the red-hot coals that may spark new fire in the populist rebellion that represents the party's only hope?

'Tipping Point'? Voters Bring Sweeping Wins for Marijuana

"It's safe to say that no other reform was approved by so many citizens on so many ballots this year"

    Nadia Prupis
    Nov 09, 2016

On a dismal election night, voters in four lucky states found something progressive to celebrate--recreational marijuana legalization.

California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada all voted to make it legal for adults over 21 to smoke weed, a sweeping mandate that many expect will prompt a legislative domino effect throughout the country.

Progressive news outlets will be live-streaming and independent voices commenting on Election Night

    Common Dreams Staff
    Nov 08, 2016

With any luck, the long national nightmare of the 2016 election will be over Tuesday night.

The New York Times has a helpful breakdown of when polls close across the nation (and when we could potentially know who won).

Will Grassroots Beat Big Money In Massachusetts Charter School Vote?

A lot is at stake in tomorrow's election, but as the New York Times reports, the big war in Massachusetts is not about who will be president but what will happen to the state's number of charter schools. A ballot referendum called Question 2 would allow for the expansion of charter schools in the state at the rate of 12 new schools per year. Votes against would maintain the current cap on charters set at 120 schools.

As the Times reporter explains, most Democrats in the state, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders from neighboring Vermont, have come out in opposition to Question 2 while Republicans generally favor it. But it's not that simple.

The Carbon Tax on the Ballot in Washington State Is Not the Right Way to Deal With Global Warming

A revenue-neutral carbon tax simply cannot deliver the massive green-energy investments we all need.

    Naomi Klein
    Nov 05, 2016

The imperatives of the climate crisis and the logic of economic austerity are at war--and Washington State is on the front lines.

So-called "revenue-neutral" carbon pricing--whereby the proceeds are used to fund tax cuts--has long been a cherished hobbyhorse of free-market economists and the odd Republican who favors climate action. It's also the policy of choice for big polluters like ExxonMobil. And now this right-wing friendly model is being pushed in Washington State, thanks to Initiative 732.

Here's How to Send a Message to Big Pharma

During this election season, Californians have been relentlessly carpet-bombed by TV ads paid for by three dozen super-rich drug companies to defeat Proposition 61.

The drug industry has raised an obscene amount - at least $109 million - to fight Prop. 61, the biggest war chest ever amassed in a ballot measure battle in California's history.

A Colorado Ballot Measure Could Make it Nearly Impossible to Ban Fracking

Green groups hope to someday amend the Colorado constitution so communities can ban fracking. An industry-sponsored amendment on the state's Nov. 8 ballot could block that.

    John Light
    Nov 05, 2016

The Colorado oil and gas industry is poised to strike a devastating blow against anti-fracking activists Tuesday. Enactment of Amendment 71, a statewide ballot initiative campaign that's backed by the industry, will make it, in the words of the Denver Post's editorial board, "nearly impossible" for Colorado voters to amend their state constitution to allow for local fracking bans -- or, for that matter, anything else.

It's a story worth telling in some detail, because it vividly illustrates the many obstacles well-connected and well-funded special interests can put in the way of citizens trying to oppose them. The latest battle in a multi-year campaign by a network of pro-fossil fuel groups to defend the fracking industry against local opponents, Amendment 71 would require 2 percent of registered voters in each of Colorado's 35 state Senate districts to sign petitions for any future initiative before it could be put on the ballot. Right now, anyone who wishes to amend the state constitution must collect signatures from 5 percent of the number of voters who voted for secretary of state in the last election.

Why A "Revenue-Neutral" Carbon Tax Could Hurt - Not Help - the Planet

Why we have to get this right the first time

    Ellicott Dandy
    Nov 05, 2016

The climate crisis is upon us. Year after year, we break records for heat, droughts and extreme weather. Super storms like Katrina and Sandy have devastated communities and left thousands homeless years later. Already we have our first climate refugees as rising seas swallow indigenous communities in Alaska and the Gulf. And hundreds of thousands of Americans die prematurely every year because of the deadly pollutants that go hand-in-hand with greenhouse gases.

We need smart solutions now. Zero-carbon energy sources? Yes. Clean mass transit? Definitely. Infrastructure that allows more of us to live car-free lifestyles? Unequivocally.

This Election Is About School Funding, Democratic Control of Education

If you're one of those voters who's been frustrated by the lack of media coverage of serious policy issues in this year's presidential election, you can look down ballot for meaningful debates on meatier topics in a number of other races.

The news outlet Vox provides a video review of the important down-ballot races highlighting issues in play such as women's reproductive rights, labor, taxes, government spending, heath care, minimum wages, gun control and marijuana legalization. Its review of state judicial races touches on the impact courts have on critical issues such as marriage equality, green energy, and abortion.

'Tired of Waiting' for Politicians, Minimum Wage on Ballot in Four States

With strong support in Arizona, Colorado, Maine, and Washington, polls show that voters believe a wage increase is 'long overdue and desperately needed'

    Lauren McCauley
    Nov 04, 2016

Voters, "tired of waiting" for federal lawmakers, will soon be casting their ballot in Arizona, Colorado, Maine, and Washington to raise the grossly inadequate minimum wage and, advocates hope, raise the standard of living for roughly 2.1 million Americans.

While none of the four ballot measures goes so far as to call for the $15 an hour wage that has been the rallying cry of the low wage worker movement and which became a pillar of Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, the initiatives signify a determination among Americans that it is high time to demand "an economy that can work for everyone."
