Reconciliation Deal Fails to Address Cause of the Climate Emergency

In response to the most recent reconciliation developments, John Noel, Senior Climate Campaigner at Greenpeace USA, said: "A relentless climate movement and the brave actions of activists pushed Democrats to deliver one of the largest renewable energy investments in our country's history. Unfortunately, the bill fails to address the out-of-control fossil fuel industry causing the climate crisis, encourages leasing of our public lands and waters, and entrenches sacrifice zones.

WASHINGTON

In response to the most recent reconciliation developments, John Noel, Senior Climate Campaigner at Greenpeace USA, said: "A relentless climate movement and the brave actions of activists pushed Democrats to deliver one of the largest renewable energy investments in our country's history. Unfortunately, the bill fails to address the out-of-control fossil fuel industry causing the climate crisis, encourages leasing of our public lands and waters, and entrenches sacrifice zones. Millions of people die every year as a result of fossil fuel air pollution, and we cannot afford any fossil fuel expansion if we're going to avoid a climate catastrophe. Marketing a 40% reduction in emissions over 8 years while increasing fossil fuel leasing and a handshake deal to streamline permitting for fossil fuel infrastructure does not add up.

"Our boat is sinking and this bill is bailing out water without plugging the hole. Last week more than 85 million people in the U.S. were under heat-related advisories and 41 states are currently in a drought. President Biden should maintain his commitment to declare a climate emergency, stop the expansion of fossil fuels, and secure a livable future."
