Right Now: Progressive Activists Confront Pelosi at Fundraiser in Reconciliation Push

WASHINGTON

Following the reversal by Speaker Pelosi to pass the bipartisan infrastructure package prior to the reconciliation package, over 50 progressive activists and organizations as part of Peoples Watch, including Sunrise Movement and United We Dream, showed up at her fundraiser in DC, demanding that she pass the $3.5 trillion climate and jobs reconciliation package prior to the bipartisan Exxon bill.

"In California, we get ruined by wildfires every year now and I'm afraid of just how much bigger, how much more destructive, these fires can burn. If Speaker Pelosi doesn't stay true to her word and pass the $3.5 trillion climate and jobs package first, I know I'll live to find out," said Nikayla Jefferson, a member of Sunrise Movement from California, who asked Speaker Pelosi if she'd hold the line on reconciliation; Pelosi did not respond. "Backtracking on this reconciliation bill means people will continue to die at the hands of the climate crisis. Democrats must seize this moment to pass the first pieces of federal climate policy to give us a real chance to combat this massive crisis."

"I have been in D.C. since last week all the way from Phoenix, Arizona to push Congressional Democrats to make good on their promises to deliver a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented people. Speaker Pelosi, and Democrats in Congress must ensure immigration stays in their version of the budget reconciliation, and stay true to their word and ensure that the entire $3.5 trillion package budget reconciliation moves alongside the bipartisan infrastructure package. We need Democrats to not only be bold, but to stay true to the people, like my son, a first time voter in Arizona, who elected them," said Karina Ruiz, Member of United We Dream Action and Executive Director of Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC).

People's Watch will remain at the Capitol all week to keep the pressure up on Democratic Leadership to deliver at least a $3.5 trillion reconciliation package with bold climate provisions.

Sunrise Movement is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.
