350.org on U.S. Supreme Court Rejecting Exxon's Appeal in Mass. Investigation

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected ExxonMobil's appeal to block Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's probe into whether Exxon knew and lied about the role of fossil fuel driving climate change.

WASHINGTON

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected ExxonMobil's appeal to block Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's probe into whether Exxon knew and lied about the role of fossil fuel driving climate change. The court now holds that Healey has the jurisdiction to seek records and take the investigation forward.

In response, Thanu Yakupitiyage, 350.org U.S. Communications Manager, issued the following statement:

"This latest decision brings great momentum in the fight to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for causing the climate crisis. We thank Attorney General Healey for her vigilant leadership in standing up for people over polluters. Executives at Exxon knew about climate change decades ago, but they chose to lie to the rest of us to line their oily pockets. Now, it's those who have done the least to cause the problem who are paying the cost of this deception through our lives and livelihoods. In 2019, we'll use all our power to make sure Big Oil pays its fair share for climate destruction."

Across the U.S. and around the world, a growing number of municipalities, states, and industries, and more are suing fossil fuel companies for their role in causing climate destruction.

350 is building a future that's just, prosperous, equitable and safe from the effects of the climate crisis. We're an international movement of ordinary people working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all.
