Oregon Governor Finally Sides with Hood River County Over Nestlé

Statement by Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch

WASHINGTON - “Governor Brown’s decision to back out of this wrongheaded deal is a hard-won victory for the communities in Hood River County that have waged a nine-year battle to keep Nestlé from seizing their water. Governor Brown’s action upholds the will of Hood River County voters, who 18 months ago overwhelmingly passed a ballot measure to ban commercial water bottling. Food & Water Watch will continue to support communities in Oregon and around the country that face this kind of corporate grab of public water.”

FRIENDS: Now More Than Ever

Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
