"Is a Dream a Lie If It Don't Come True, Or Is It Something Worse?"
This evening, Tuesday, the last day of the month of August, 2010, our president Barack Obama will lie to us. You can be sure of it. It is a fact that all presidents lie. This particular untruth will be a big one. It will hang with us and infect our lives for years after its moment of utterance. The radio and television will return those few Americans who bother to listen to or to watch the actor read his script to regularly scheduled programming after a few minutes perhaps of reassurance from a couple of opinionators that yes, indeed, he said what he said and we are all well served and secured.
We are warned in advance that this lie will be some variation on the one former president George Bush told us many years ago: combat operations in Iraq by United States military forces have ended.
Smoother than G. W. Bush, slicker, and of course smarter, this lying president will not likely be goofed up in buckled and pocketed flight gear, and he will be accompanied by the mandatory American flag on a sturdy stand rather than a blatant Mission Accomplished banner. But the substance will be the same: we did it; don't worry, don't doubt, don't question. The big lie will adhere to us with a greasy butter of calming reassurance.
Here is why this story is a lie. The singular event upon which it is hinged is that the number of men and women under arms in our name in that abused and beaten and corrupted nation has fallen below fifty thousand. Like the Dow-Jones Industrial average falling below or rising above ten thousand, there is some magic apparently attached to this number, a significance not inherent in one a thousand higher and a weight unknown to a number a hundred lower. But here's what we know, though we may prefer to not confront our knowledge: the beat goes on.
Our fifty-thousand-scant soldiers will have guns and ammunition. They will be shot at and they will shoot. Some will die; others will be wounded, crippled, maimed, burned, ruined. They will be "trainers" and "advisers," not "combatants," and we thank you for the distinction, Mr. President.
We will continue to keep tens of thousands of mercenaries in country. We call them "contractors."
We will maintain many large military bases, well-equipped with bullets and bombs, in Iraq, and are even as we hear the news tonight expanding and modernizing them.
We will run as many special operations, secret operations, undercover operations as the CIA and military intelligence types think proper. We will assassinate, we will kidnap, we will imprison and we or our agents will torture.
We will send billions of dollars a year to Iraq for many more years. Much of this will be wasted. A good deal of it will be used to kill. Among the dead will be women and children and non-combatant men. We will not hear much about these deaths from our president or Public Radio or Fox News or CNN.
And so it goes. And so it goes. And so it goes. And so it goes. As it has so often gone before.
We are not surprised that we are lied to. Republicans don't like this president because he is a Democrat. But they do not seem much to mind interminable wars and the business they bring to defense contractors. The truly loopy members of the Republican sect don't like him because he is a Muslim, an alien, a Fascist and a Socialist. And black, of course, too.
Democrats like him because he is a Democrat and raises money for the party and will sign bad bills Democrats like such as the insurance companies' health care scam, and help out Wall Street even though Democrats are usually a little more discreet than Republicans about their affection for money.
Liberals don't like being lied to, but after all it's a tough old world out there and this most Hopeful of presidents sometimes has to "fake right" before he goes left on some unspecified future day, and he can only get so much done with such terrible Republican obstructionism, and he's going in the right direction carefully and incrementally, and he's smarter than George Bush, and he's our first black president. And advising and training sounds better than combating, doesn't it?
Possibly some readers missed the Nick Lowe reference I slipped in to my little essay a few paragraphs previous. Here's another, more direct: All men, all men, all men are liars, and that's the truth. But there are of course degrees. And there are times and places where lying does great harm. And there are those lies nobody much questions because they are crafted less to obfuscate than to cover, to contain, to patch together. Among these are the lies we tell to ourselves
Richard Nixon lied to us early and often and without shame or regret. We do not yet know if Barack Obama is troubled by his lies. He is famous for being cool. No Drama Obama. It's a subjective line between cool and cold. Cold and unfeeling. Cold and calculating. We'll know him better in a few years when we're through with him or he with us. We'll have seen the man and the damage done.
There is no military draft. We maintain forces of economic conscripts (the All-Volunteer Army) and "contractors" and spooks. There is no noticeable hurt put on our entertainments or diversions; we are not invaded, the stores are full of merchandise, Hollywood makes movies, China makes cell phones and GPS devices and an astonishing selection of television sets. We can borrow our way through any number of wars and still have fun on the homefront. All we need to do is to swallow the lie.
Don't ask, don't tell. Eat it up. Make excuses. Find diversions.
Obama owns George Bush's wars now. And tonight each of us will own a piece of Obama's lies.
Once Cooper had a railroad and he made it run. Or a cheesy little newspaper column, anyhow. Now that he has none, fewer of his opinions are thrust upon the world, but from time to time he is still capable of such disgust that he says what he feels for no other reason than that he feels better for doing so. At that point some of you may as well read it. He can be reached at coop@tidewater.net, but is more likely to be digging a hole or dragging an innocent rock from one part of his property to another than to be lying around the Internet waiting for someone to argue with, so an answer may or may not follow your query. And he is, at sixty, engaged with a five-year-old who lies poorly and guiltily only about inconsequential things and whose mind and character he must help fortify against the world we have built for him to inhabit. Oh, yeah: he's a contractor, too. Hammer. No gun.

Yes, Obama is a master relabeler and rebrander.
Obama took a 1990s Republican corporate welfare program for drug and insurance companies, let those companies enhance the weasel clauses and payoff provisions, and sold it to us as Obamacare.
Obama let Wall Street write their own bankster bill that will further empower Wall Street, enhance their profits, and end up increasing banking costs for us. Obama labeled it financial industry reform.
Obama is now repackaging the Ir-Af-Pak occupation to lend legitimacy to the Ir-Af-Pak shell game he has been playing with us.
I'll second that opinion. It's a relief to hear the truth stated so eloquently. Thanks!
That last bit of self-description was precious. Thanks!
Telling truth to power ought to be the objective of this site. This article is spot on! Refreshing given the Dem apologists who take up space making excuses for Bush Light.
Yes, what rita said. Thank you.
Rock on, Chris, and thank you for that delightful last paragraph!
Just adding my thanks.
Thanking for the truth is not enough for us to do. We know we are lied to constantly by our elected officials....and by both of the two corporate parties. The title of this article asks, "or is it something worse". It is.
Our calm acceptance of all these lies is cause of the death of our democracy. Our commitment to one or the other of the two corporate parties and our tough job of figuring out which is the worser evil is the first step to the total corruption of our government.
We must not continue in this mindless manner. We got in this mess through bipartisanship. That means the two work hand in hand to further the interests of their paymasters---the corporations. These same corporations that the Supremos gave the rights of persons under our Constitution.
We must make a change in the leadership in Congress. We must kick out the corrupt. You can tell if a person is corrupt by the fact that he or she puts a little D or an R after their name. See that, and AVOID THAT CANDIDATE AT ALL TIMES.
We need to vote for independents and form new political parties. The way we do it now is the reason for the mess we are in. The very wealthy are happy as clams in their mansions, but the working people are being screwed---and it ain't fun.
Campaign season is upon us. Watch out for falling lies. They will be everywhere, especially in that flashing box in your home. Turn the damn thing off and go out and talk to real people. You might hear the truth.
I have no problem with that. I was impressed, though, the local WSHU news team announced on the radio that the Green Party had to candidates running for Congress. First time I ever heard that. WSHU is the classical PR station based in CT and LI (though based in CT). Just wish they had announced the Green Party candidate for Governor in NY.

"We will not hear much about these deaths from our president or Public Radio or Fox News or CNN."
Glad to see "Public" Radio ("Public" Television would also qualify) linked with Fox. Just one pallet's worth of the 360 tons of shrink-wrapped $100 bills sent to Iraq (3/4s of which are unaccounted for) would fully fund the "public" airways. As is, the Lehrer New Hour is funded by Chevron, Monsanto, Bank of America and Pacific Life. Oil, GM foods, Wall St., Insurance. All bases covered.
Not quite all bases, let's not forget the Koch brothers.
No, there are no US "combat troops" in Iraq...they have been renamed "suckers left behind to catch bullets"
Hypocrisy be thy name!
Hoa binh
Circa Daniel Ellsberg-- Is there a president who doesn't lie to us about war?
By accepting a lie you become the lie..
The sheeple of the usa must get rid of this lier.. Best start is to
oust any incumbent in this next election.
Stop buying anything you do not need.
We the people are responsible for the kids our contractors will kill today.
GREAT ARTICLE. THANKS
In order to "get rid of this lier," we need to get rid of High Society, the top 1% who since 1776 have owned 80% of all our wealth.
Anyone with wealth over a million -- nationalize it. Excessive wealth -- everyone organize against it.
LIE -- A PRETENSE OF GOOD
A most enjoyable essay on some of society’s most cherished hypocrisies. So Mr. Cooper, please do give us your hard and fast definition of a lie, for there are little white lies that save us time and remove little obstacles that get in our way, and novels that are lies most enjoyable that seem to make the mind more expandable.
For modern day Jews and Christians have the world locked in darkness with a most deceitful and corrupt definition of a lie, the “word of God” no less:
BIBLE – COMMANDMENT NINE
“Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
Exodus 20:16
So according to the bible, a lie is being deceitful in a court of law, and any other form of deceit is not a lie. Comes now new light to force such darkness to give way:
A LIE
(1) “Do not be deceitful to a neighbor, your witness that of a liar.”
Exodus 20:16 in the ancient Greek
(2) A lie is an illusion of good hiding misery.
(3) A liar’s pretense of good hiding an intent to be enriched upon your misery.
(4) A mixture of good and evil such that one cannot tell good from evil.
Light is truth, whereas darkness is a pretense of good that destroys the truth.
New light always forces the darkness to give way. So take care, for when someone refuses to except the light they are trying to lock you in darkness.
There will be 50,000 "advisors and trainers" left behind in Iraq. One can easily call them "teachers".
There are 250,000 Iraqi soldiers to be taught. That is one "teacher" for every 5 Iraqis.
Meanwhile they lay off teachers in the USA.
If the USA kept the same student/teacher ratio 5000 "advisors" would be needed.
It certainly shows where the administrations priorities are.
Those "Children" in US schools are not being taught to make themselves a decent life so that they can join the US Military and teach Iraqis how to make an indecent killing.
That's good commentary!!
Spot on.
the lie is swallowed at the point of a gun...
awareness of the lie is important...
awareness of the gun, moreso...
words may be treated any number of ways...
guns must be countered...
Actually a lie is swallowed by a sucker-bait hook, the deadly force comes later and is the terror needed to keep you from removing the hook.
The last line was priceless and unequivocal. Obama owns both of Bush's wars, as well as the economy.
Emma Goldman said: "If voting could change anything, then voting would be illegal". Shortly thereafter, she was deported to Russia. Though Obama was voted into office by the people, he is a figurehead, as are all presidents, for corporate and moneyed interests. If he gets too "radical" he will get whacked just as leaders who failed to toe the line (MLK, Malcolm X, RFK and JFK) were. I am sure Obama is aware of this and knows his boundaries. As long as the power structures that brought us these unending wars remain, there will be no real change in US domestic and foreign policy. Is this a call to action? Not really since the power structures are firmly entrenched and (in my opinion) will not change and cannot be forced to change. Eventually, the structures will collapse on their own, it is just a matter of time.
Totally Amused
Your points are all spot on.
I have heard the "voting/change/illegal" quote attributed to various individuals - Theodor Adorno, as well as Goldman. Nevertheless, it is not only pertinent to the discussion, it is unassailable.
We will NEVER be able to vote ourselves out of the clusterfuck - even 3rd party candidates will end up beholden to Power Institutions and the process begins anew.
The Grand Institutions are indeed TBTF... until there is no other option (we are very close at this moment in time)... and 3rd Party individuals have no chance of slaying this dragon. It MUST die of its own inherent contradictions... and it WILL.
The simple reason these are such "interesting times" is that the power structures are indeed in the process of collapse and only smoke and mirrors are able to prolong the fall for a very short while... as the elite scratch thier collective asses trying to find another desperate scam to keep the house of cards quivering for another year or so.
The absolute BEST thing to happen to the USA will be complete and utter collapse.
Although I am a Socialist I will gladly vote for Palin/Beck to hasten the enevitable.
It is past time for the BEAST to die... it will certainly be very painful, but the alternative of keeping the beast on life-support indefinately, is even more painful.
Sarah... please do what you were born to do - I welcome the impending chaos.
Sarah was born to seduce me, although how you knew that is beyond me...
I, too, welcome the impending chaos...
I'm with you too. But we are few. So glad to be able to find kindred spirits on CD. I have only one friend in the world who understands all this.
The myths are so deeply entrenched in people's psyche, like a thought virus. You can walk someone through all the self-evident truths, all of the logical arguments, all the easily verifiable facts but then something short-circuits and they come to some completely irrational conclusion or suddenly everything you just said seems to slide right out of their heads and they just change the subject, or you're accused of being "negative", or "hopeless" or of contributing to a "self-fulfilling prophecy". With the midterms just around the corner it's once again becoming well-nigh impossible to even get people to consider the idea that voting for the lesser of two evils over and over again isn't going to fix a single one of the existential crises facing mankind. I know, I should stop wasting my breath on these people.
Our world is completely mad and if I didn't have small children I really wouldn't give a damn that we are descending into chaos. I just can't quite make my peace with it- I know it's necessary, I know it's inevitable, I just wish I had a bit more time to get ready...
"Our world is completely mad and if I didn't have small children I really wouldn't give a damn that we are descending into chaos."
But apparently you do have small children, so you do give a damn? if so, what do you propose to do to ameliorate the chaos for them?
"Although I am a Socialist I will gladly vote for Palin/Beck to hasten the enevitable. ...... I welcome the impending chaos."
I don't know what the "enevitable" is that you see, but you seem a little too cheerful in the contemplation of human misery for my taste. Are all "socialists" like you?
I've always resisted the "vote the lesser of two evils" argument for voting Republican or Democrat instead of third party. I am starting to be persuaded by the "vote for the worst candidate (Republican) in order to bring down the system" line of reasoning. Something to think about.
"Is this a call to action? Not really since the power structures are firmly entrenched and (in my opinion) will not change and cannot be forced to change."
Good excuse for staying home, having a beer, and being totally amused. Gotta admit, i've used the "it's hopeless, what's the use" rationalization to avoid the hard work of doing what needs to be done on more than one occasion, but I've gotten to the point of knowing when i'm doing it and realizing that sooner or later I'm going to have to roll up my sleeves and enter the fray. Guess you haven't gotten there yet ......
What a wonderful piece. Too bad there isn't a rating system on CD such that we could assign 5 stars or whatever instead of taking up Comment space just to say, "Well done, sir!" But in this case, it's definitely worth it. How very refreshing this is and thank you, Mr Cooper!
Just adding my thanks here for both the article and your self description at the end. Both, priceless but in completely different ways!
This is a more politically correct version of the "You lie" incident from last year.
Obama is clucking like a Weimarian lame duck while assorted American fascists await their "George Washington" figure to lead them (as Glen Beck noted the other day). He has completely played into the hands of those who will use the "stab in the back" meme (it will take only one terrorist attack) to ride to power. Après lui, le déluge.
The war in Afghanistan, which is now expanding into Pakistan. The Taliban and al Qaeda are networks of the CIA. The war is invented, made-up, as fictitious enemies bombed the WTC: 9/11 (see “Thermite: 9/11 Controlled Demolition,” Why the Facts of 9/11 Must be Suppressed,” “9/11, Canada and the New World Order” by Guns and Butter Radio; WBAI radio: “Politics and Science of 9/11.”).
The questions should be raised is “why and how it started?” "what is the hidden policy and forces?" The first war in Iraq in 1990, of course, the invasion by Iraq of Northern Kuwait's oil fields, etc. but the policy really started, or on the forces "coming into being" in 1973 on the creation of the Trilateralist Commission by David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski (Jimmy Carter’s National Security advisor in 1979).
On the 2 Iraqi War, Afghanistan to Pakistan and perhaps expanding to the oil rich area of Kashmir, Pakistan and Kashmir, India for a Regional/Global war, and on pipelines, (Caspian Sea pipeline (and Turkmenistan); COOP pipeline (
Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan); IPI pipeline (Iran, Pakistan, India); and the Nabucco Gas Pipeline (Austria, Hungry, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Tbilisi, Georgia and the Caspian Sea).
I think 9/11 is a good start, and how the Trilateralist Commission (David) Rockefeller Establishment) took control of the entire country, media, etc. The WTO (World Trade Organization) starting under George H. W. Bush in 1990-1991 to Bill Clinton in 1993 and 1994 on NAFTA and WTO is a great and perhaps the best start historically.
But the jobs starting fleeing America in pre-NAFTA configurations and pre-WTO configurations in 1973 to Mexico, Taiwan and Indonesia. The Nixon-Shock in 1971 where the dollar was taken off the “fixed exchange rates" to “floating exchange rates" to the very "raisons d’être'" for the founding of the Trilateralist Commission in 1973, and is the best place historically vis-a’-vis the WTC bombing: 9/11 to start retrospectively.
This article really hit the spot, especially after the Cole and McGovern articles on this topic.
So glad to see the efforts of Mr. Cooper again. Easily one of my favorite writers.
Yes, I totally agree....especially with the "writer" part. We have so few of them these days. He is a treasure.
Excellent substitute for the insipid Speech Obama Ought to Give But Won't tripe written by Gatekeepers supportive of Public Enemy #1.
And for those who haven't there is a rather good essay by Paul Street at Znet, http://www.zcommunications.org/the-empires-new-clothes-by-paul-street-1
Obama, like so many on the ship of fools, long ago learned, if you rock the boat you are tossed overboard. He is neither the captain nor the mate but merely the ships clown.
We can but hope that Iraqi patriots and freedom fighters continue to target Mrkn mercenary thugs.*
Mercenary thug: one so vicious, stupid, ignorant, or poor as to volunteer to murder for Obama's re-election, the orders of bloody-minded superiors, or the retention of the Mayor of Kabul. (I know, Kabul is in the other place, but both wars are based on lies, and our troops are as vicious and disgusting as the Nazis who invaded Poland because Poland was the "treat to Germany," as Adolf had it.)
The voters are not fooled stupid, but deceitfully greedy, for the upper half of society, the half most aggressive and wealthy, they are the voters and paid actor Obama is their man.
that was super, Cooper.
The most lamentable thing about the colossal failure of Barack Obama is that it didn't have to be this way. He is a very charismatic, well-educated and capable guy, who on election night had a sizeable majority of American voters eating out of his hand. He campaigned on the need for national reform, and voters’ hopes and spirits were lifted by the possibilities of renewal. In the end, voters committed themselves to the man's political mantra. In hindsight, it appears that he did not.
We have survived many lousy presidents through-out recent decades. But, none has been more disappointing or frustrating than this one. Barack Obama promised us--both Republicans and Democrats--hope and renewal. What he delivered was more of the same duplicity and further defeat.
I mean no disrespect, Dorothy, but it was rather apparant all along.
Have you asked yourself why you believed a politician who was on the campaign trail? I do understand why college students and people under thirty, even, would be taken in. But i honestly have no understanding of those who are older and are that naive. Voting the less of what seemed to be two evils. Maybe. But to have believed a slick politico who had the backing of all the pundits and major players? And, no experience besides. Not even the facts on the ground were anything worth writing home about.
But, maybe people are realizing how easy they can be played. Maybe the 'liberals' realize that their polical correctness was played to the hilt.
Sorry if i offended anyone, but i had to tolerate the mindless minyons for what seemed to be and still is, and endless campaign. Oh, and the inauguration balls and celebration of the new era that the u.s. citizens were so proud of creating.
P.T. Barnum knew this country so very well.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono said:
"War is over if you want it"
Now, in this brave new world:
"War is over if you lie it."
"Richard Nixon lied to us early and often and without shame or regret. We do not yet know if Barack Obama is troubled by his lies."
Has anyone, even for the briefest moment, ever detected any shame in Obama for the tsunami of lies that constituted his presidential campaign? The answer is emphatically "no". Obama, common political sociopath that he is, revels in his lies. He is never troubled. In his particular kingdom, lies are the coin of the realm. A dollar's worth of lies buys him and his ilk ten dollars of pride.
