Our Country Deserves Better: The Russo Marsh Crowd Bashes Obama from Coast to Coast
It was only a few minutes into the October 22 rally staged by Our Country Deserves Better, a political action committee (PAC) formed to oppose the Democratic presidential candidate. But Williams, a conservative talk radio host from California, was just getting warmed up.
"Barack Obama represents people who are ashamed of this great country, who believe that this great country is the evil in the world and that, in their revisionist history, they cast us as the villain," Williams claimed. "And if we dare question them ... like Joe the Plumber: 'Mr. Obama, what are you going to do to my taxes?' That was enough for the dogs who support the ideological left to go after Joe the Plumber and shred him. ... There's no such thing as sacred, among the unholy left. They vilify this nation, and they vilify those of us who support it. ... [It's] the same kind of thuggery of the left that's used by totalitarian regimes around the world to silence opposition."
Towards the end of the rally, Williams invoked a long-discredited smear against Obama that seems designed to play on fears of his "otherness": that he's not really a U.S. citizen. "We all know that Barack Obama is not qualified to be president of the United States, beyond being above the age of 35 and probably an American citizen," said Williams, emphasizing the word "probably." He laughed and then repeated: "Probably. Even money."
Unlike his hypothetical conservatives cowed by leftist thugs, Williams will not be silenced. Until recently, he hosted an afternoon talk show in Albany, New York. He left the station as part of changes to make its local programming "less harsh" and more focused on "community involvement," according to its program director. For six years before that, Williams had a talk show on Sacramento's KFBK. He currently offers his "daily rant" on his website and occasionally guest hosts talk radio shows and appears as a commentator on cable television.
Williams' tendency to make sensational -- and sometimes offensive and misleading -- comments is well documented. On his blog, Williams refers to Obama as "Barack bin al Hussein Osama O'Bomber," a "domestic insurgent" and the "Jihadian Candidate." Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Williams claimed that New Orleans residents didn't "have the requisite brains and common sense to get out of the way of a Category 5 hurricane." On MSNBC, Williams said that most "illegal immigrants ... are just here to rip off a piece and take it back to wherever they came from. We're talking about drug runners, human traffickers. We're talking about people who engage in slavery and prostitution." He then rejected bilingualism, declaring, "As long as we have the ICBM [missile]s, they can learn English."
The second Our Country Deserves Better rally speaker, Marine mom Deborah Johns, was more restrained. She stressed John McCain's foreign policy and military experience, and then related an exchange she had with 12 and 13 year old boys in Nevada. The boys told her they would vote for Obama if they could, and asked why she supports McCain. Johns replied with a story about a hard working, straight-A student and a lazy, irresponsible D student. "And then, along comes Principal Obama," she told them. "And he takes your A's from you, from all your hard work, and he takes your friend's D's, and he puts them all together, and you both end up with a C." Obama the presidential candidate, she explained to rally-goers, wants "to take our hard-working money from us, the middle-class Americans, and redistribute what we have worked hard to earn and give it to people who just kind of sit on their laurels."
The rally was part of Our Country Deserves Better's "Stop Obama" bus tour, which ran through the key campaign states of Nevada, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. The October 22 event -- promoted as being in Madison, Wisconsin, but held in Fitchburg, a small town south of the city -- was attended by about 50 McCain supporters. Local Republican activists said they had been contacted by the PAC, but weren't familiar with it. "I got an email [about the rally] yesterday," Bill Richardson, media coordinator for the Republican Party of Dane County, told me. "It came up very quickly. ... I don't know much about it, but they're going all over the United States." Other attendees said they heard about the rally on local talk radio.
If the Our Country Deserves Better PAC, its personalities or its tactics seem familiar, there's good reason. The PAC's chief strategist is Sal Russo of the Sacramento-based Republican PR firm Russo Marsh & Rogers. The PAC's chair is Howard Kaloogian, a former California state legislator who worked with Russo to found the non-profit group Move America Forward (MAF) in 2004. The PAC's coordinator is Joe Wierzbicki, a principal in the Russo Marsh firm who also serves as MAF's grassroots coordinator. In addition to being the PAC's spokesperson, Deborah Johns is MAF's director of military relations. Mark Williams promoted the recall of Democratic governor Gray Davis on his Sacramento radio show in 2003 -- a campaign that also involved MAF chair Melanie Morgan and laid the groundwork for MAF. Williams has also taken part in numerous MAF campaigns and rallies, and traveled to Iraq in 2005 with MAF's "Voices of Soldiers" tour.
Russo Marsh has also been a major recipient of the PAC's expenditures. As of October 15, Our Country Deserves Better paid the firm nearly $147,000, according to disclosure forms. In addition, the PAC's bus tour parallels MAF events like its September 2007 "Fight for Victory" cross-country bus tour in support of the war in Iraq and its August 2005 "You Don't Speak for Me, Cindy" caravan challenging "peace mom" Cindy Sheehan. "This is bus tour number six for me, across the country," Deborah Johns said, at the PAC rally. That's not to mention the similarity between the negative television ads put out by MAF, which have bashed Congressional Democrats and the United Nations, and those put out by the PAC, which claim Obama isn't patriotic and link him not only to Bill Ayers but to Hamas.
Yet, Johns assured me at the PAC rally that Our Country Deserves Better is "completely separate" from Move America Forward.
Craig Holman, the watchdog group Public Citizen's campaign finance lobbyist, agreed that "there's a lot of commingling that goes on" between PACs and non-profit organizations -- also referred to 501(c)(3) groups -- though "there is supposed to be a very significant firewall between them." Under current rules, "the objective is to make sure that whoever's making the decisions and directing the PAC isn't also making the decisions and directing the 501(c)(3). If they're the same people, they've got the same knowledge, they've got the same objectives. To me, that crosses the line. ... But most of these groups realize that no one's going to go after them."
Also disconcerting is the impact of such never-ending negative campaigning on political discourse. While most of the rally attendees told me they opposed Obama because they didn't feel he was qualified to be president, one woman said Obama was "dangerous" because he "will change our society." How? Obama and ACORN, the community organization that Republicans have accused of voter fraud, will "organize all over the country, like little Hitler youth," she confided.
Our Country Deserves Better has implicitly acknowledged the tenor of its own events. In an email inviting supporters to the Washington DC press conference marking the end of the "Stop Obama" bus tour, the PAC's Calvin Collins stressed, "This is a news conference so the tone will be a bit different from our typical rallies. ... While we all have our frustrations with the news media's coverage of this presidential campaign, we must be respectful towards them."
Our country deserves better.

Show AllThe choice is Obama or McCain. The way our system works is limited to 2 candidates which is really stupid. If Americans were not so lazy and dumb, we'd do something about that giving rise to valid, REAL 3rd, 4th, 5th parties giving us real choices. However, that's for 2012. Right now, it's Obama or McCain. Actually, the only choice is Obama. At least, Senator Obama has not completely insulted our collective intelligence with the outright lies of the McCain/Palin ticket. Here's a few.
1. "We're winning the war. The "surge" has worked."
This is heinous, we were NEVER going to "win" the war with Iraq. It's a Kharma thing. We have to own the fact that we attacked a much smaller country, that had been much disarmed before we went in, killing, maiming, orphaning, making homeless millions of men, women and children that had no ill intent towards us. BTW, the standard McCain uses to claim victory for "the surge" is less violence/attacks by the insurgency which is not the result of "the surge" but rather the peace making skills of the different factions of the Iraqi insurgency. The insurgents have come to an understanding in order to rebuild their country and move on. Now, they just want us to leave their country, haven't we done enough damage already?
2. "McCain was 'tested' in the Cuba missile crisis"
Since he was on an aircraft carrier awaiting orders to attack". Come again? How is that being tested as a leader? I'm sure he was not the only one doing so at the time.
3."The whole 'Joe the plumber' crapola"
This is wrong on so many levels. I saw the video, "Joe" pushed his way forward to ask Obama a question. Obama answered his question calmly showing "Joe" that under his plan, that taxes would be lower, that he would be able to grow his business and when his income would be over $250,000, his tax level would go up 3% ($7,500 on $250,000). Further, I wish that people would realize that taxes are paid on net income by small business, that after all the standard deductions are made, the small business has grossed far more than $250,000 for any particular year. That by paying the additional 3% on taxes will not force companies to forgo growth or creating new jobs. The expenses to do those things are legitimate tax deductions and as such, brings down the net figure. "Joe the Plumber" was not imposed upon by Obama, he was not investigated by Obama's campaign. "Joe" is a fraud and all the grandstanding on his behalf is old already. I have to give the McCain people credit - "Joe" is their most successful ploy to divert attention from the fact that McCain is the lesser of the two choices.
McCain has nothing to offer us but smoke, mirrors and "Joe the Plumber". The economy has all but crashed, Congress had to implement a $700,000,000,000 bail out of Wall Street so that the financial system doesn't tank completely, millions of American families are facing being evicted from their homes as they can't afford to make their mortgage payments, there has been a loss of about 800,000 jobs this year (so much for the tax cuts as proposed by McCain creating jobs or "opportunity"), our education system is so poor that fully 33% of high school graduates are functionally illiterate - how are those young people supposed to compete in the market? What kind of jobs can they do. Seriously? We don't need that many pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers. Plus, the prisons are full, the US has the most people incarcerated in the world. All this and the only thing McCain can offer is a continuance of Bush tax cuts, "the surge is working", I'm a war hero and the most negative presidential campaign in a while. Everything Obama proposes McCain attacks while not offering any alternatives to solve the many problems we have.
It's true that we might deserve better than Barak Obama but he's our only choice given that McCain is a tired old man who's being run roughshod by his "hockey mom" running mate who clearly has her own agenda. McCain should have told the party that Joe Lieberman was his choice for VP, or he should have really "put country first" by getting over his personal dislike of Mitt Romney made him the VP but no, McCain was too cowardly to do so and is stuck with this "Northern Exposure" hockey mom, pentecostal Christian whose pastor laid his hands upon to pray for protection from "witches", whose nasally whine while lying about their policies and assassinating the character of Obama is as pleasant as nails on a chalkboard. By accepting Palin as his running mate spoke volumes. It showed that McCain doesn't have the courage to stand up for his convictions to the religious right faction of his party which is unfortunate as that is not "presidential". The people of the USA need a leader who will have courage in the face of adversity within their party, not the broken down old bitter man that McCain has become after have been thwarted by Karl Rove on behalf of the president McCain came to agree with 90% of the time thereafter. Again, no principal. John McCain needs to see that he was never destined to be the president and start being honest with himself and the people for whom he claims to be fighting.
I've had an odd thought cross my mind a number of times starting maybe a month or two ago and it's that I wonder if McCain or McCain-Palin aren't actually saying all of these nonsensical things about Obama in order to actually boost voter support for him, Obama. Maybe McCain's always been a goof actor like he's been in or during this campaign for the presidency, for I don't know about him except for what I've learned over the past year or so and therefore can't speak from prior knowledge of him. But he still has been causing me to wonder if his team isn't really working to get Obama elected, which of course would be kept secret; knowledge only for the [insiders] to know about.
See the quick and good reference article by Prof. James Petras linked in my following post and in which he strongly enough, while briefly, highlights the extremely corrupt, voir evil, nature of Obama's national policy team of "advisers", i.e., controllers, or directors. They aren't filling an advisory role; they're [directing], and Obama's the front-stage actor.

I don't know that McCain's intending to do as per above, it's just something I've thought or wondered a little about. There are differences that also cause me to think that maybe it's just that McCain's ... quacky. F.e., Obama has promised to never allow Iran to develop or process uranium, and in totally threatening terms, while McCain's said that he'd allow Iran to process uranium as long as it's done in Iran. And McCain, I've read more than once, is actually better, maybe not much better, but at least somewhat better than Obama is in terms of national policy, some national policies anyway. Obama's dead wrong on those and many other things, and I don't believe he'll do anything really good for national policies; while McCain's at least right about Iran's right to process uranium and some other issues. Maybe he, McCain, is just a goofball; or possessed by a very odd demon that likes to "clown around" for the sake of apparences. (?) Obama's a fraud, liar though, and he knows what he's doing; just doesn't tell his supporters the truth. In that respect, I don't know if McCain's a real liar, or just a ... nut.
I'd vote for neither, but Obama's supporters and supportive 'crackpot realist' critics need to wake up to true [reality]! See Prof. Petras' article and that should clarify the 'crackpot' part; as well as much that's very important to [learn] about Obama's "team".
This is why you don't see me wasting time trying to point out all, if any, of McCain's goofball words about Obama. McCain, imo, should be forgotten history by now; although he might actually make a somewhat better president, a [little], than Obama, whose team promises, and based on concrete knowledge of them, extremes that will be 'shock and awe' more than what Bush-Cheney have committed, so far.
People must cease letting themselves be fooled based on apparences. Obama is not about any real change; the most we have of that with him is his skin colour, nothing more! It takes truly [responsible] citizenship to do the readings that are necessary to understand what his team really consists of; and he has already and clearly stated that at least his foreign policy team during the campaign will constitute the or much of the FP team of his presidential administration, if he's elected, which seems to be a certainty.
BEWARE ... of "wolves in sheep's clothing"!

In another article in today's common dreams is one about dumb white males, and lo here they are, talking up the GOP line. What do you expect from a pig but a grunt. There are times when one wants a 40 day election and thinking that any drunk off the street could do better. The saying that graveyards are full of indispensable men and women particularly applies to presdents and candidates more than ever.
"Barack Obama is not qualified to be president of the United States". Yeah. Right. A U.S. Senator and a Professor of Constitutional Law. Pretty lousy resume'.
And to those of you planning on casting your vote for a 3rd party candidate, let me just say this:
I sympathize. I really do. I'd rather have a President Nader or McKinney (or Kucinich) in the White House. But you and I both know it just ain't gonna happen. And if you truly believe that there's no difference between McCain and Obama then you've been asleep these last eight disastrous years. The ONLY hope for a progressive revolution is to (first) elect Obama. Then keep the pressure on him to deliver the goods. A vote for Nader or McKinney won't just be a harmless expression of conscience; it will be a de-facto vote for McCain. Please. Don't do it. Not this year. Too much is at stake.
A professor of constitutional law who votes to undermine the constitution is unfit.
I'd like to know what your bottom lines are? For me, it's that I won't vote for any pro-war candidates, am against american imperialism, and am against nuclear power. Actually, as a gay man, I've realized that I can't vote for people who don't get the gay marriage issue. While it is true that Obama is not AS scary as John McCain, he is still very scary! It's his policies that I reject. It is always the right time to reject the one-party Republicrat system.
The Fred Phelps of right-wing PACs, and about as effective.
Deborah Johns has either:
1) seriously lied, or
2) been brain dead for 8 years, or
3) been blindfolded and locked in a closet for 8 years
How could anybody have missed Dubya's wholesale privatizing profit and socializing loss? Not to mention his looting the US Treasury and incomes of the working class?
To wit:
1)Dubya turned a huge surplus into a huge, ever growing deficit.
2)Dubya, Greenspan and the Wall St. pirates created higher inflation than the US has seen in 3o years (at least wages were rising during 1970s inflation) Inflation is the ultimate tax on wage earners.
3)Under Dubya, "A" grade performance by the working class has resulted in lower wages and higher taxes for workers, while corporations that performed at "D or F" grade were given corporate welfare, huge tax breaks and bailouts that resulted in record corporate profits.
Deprogramming is needed for voters of BOTH parties, not just the Republicans. I kow many people who consider themselves "peace activists" yet they vote for pro-war candidates & parties. They vote against their best interests, regardless of which of the two Republicrat parties they choose as their "BRAND".
Read: Matt Gonzalez, "What Do They Have To Do To Lose Your Vote?"
http://www.counterpunch.com/gonzalez10292008.html
Progressiveparty, that Matt Gonzales article is the most definitive, eye-opening assessment of why progressives SHOULDN'T waste their vote on Barack Obama I've seen yet. An excellent analysis!
Why must we go to Counterpunch to read articles like this? Why does Common Dreams, a supposedly "progressive" website, offer a constant stream of Democratic Party advertisements posing as reasoned commentary? Is this website a progressive website or is it a Democratic Party website? I think there needs to be some clarification.
I already stopped visiting Crooks & Liars because I tired of their neverending proselytising for Obama. Do I need to check off Common Dreams from my list of favorites as well?
agree... good analysis
If Obama was really a socialist, I might find some degree of common ground in what he represents... but since the only real-world view of "spreading the wealth" that he has demonstrated has been directly to corporations and politicians in need of filling their pork barrels... I can not bring myself to view him in any light that resembles a "socialist".
To me, he is just one more self-serving power-hungry pol who will screw "The People" at the drop of a dime. He is NOT qualified to lead this country. He does not deserve anyone's vote... except those corporatists whom he represents.
Obama... just one more right-wing war-monger who licks the boots of corporate fascists.
Our Country Deserves Better
So everything should go to hell, then? Education should collapse in the US as theocrats continue to grab power? People's health & scientific advance should be thrown out the window for the sake of ideological purity? To hell with women, to hell with gays - because Obama doesn't pass muster with the guardians of orthopraxis?
To hell with kids in schools, with the aged having to stay at work, with people losing their pensions, all to satisfy the unhistorical fantasies tricked out in unanchored revolutionary jargon?
Agreed!
I'm thinking of running for prez in 4 years, just so America can see what a real "leftist socialist" looks like."

Very well said. I was excoriated for pointing out these very same truths at Crooks and Liars by Obama's loyal followers who, at the sight of any criticism of their candidate, almost immediately respond that the critic must be a "Republican troll." Since almost all the liberal blogs have fallen under the spell of Obama, one always finds the commenters here to be a pleasant surprise as so many of them here thankfully realize that all that glitters with Obama is not gold.
A PAC formed with the intent of being AGAINST somebody. Interesting. I think that means they don't have ideas themselves, they're bored, and so they are critizing someone else.
Not really very bright, are they?

“Johns replied with a story about a hard working, straight-A student and a lazy, irresponsible D student.”
Unfortunately, the lazy, irresponsible D student is he current president. It is the school bully, not the school principal, who will take your homework. While led by disingenuous sociopaths like the directors of this PAC, rank-and-file conservatives suffer from clinical schizophrenia by the terms of which they cannot distinguish themselves from the United States and they project their own behavior upon their perceived enemies.
Par for the course, I guess, for the Republicans. Irate "citizenry" who are really pr puds making money. Why anyone still trusts the Republican Party is a mystery to me. Toss these guys another couple hundred grand and they'd be banging the drum for Nader. In the meantime, the American people buy this manipulated tripe. Sickening.
So let me get this straight ...
Obama isn't really a US citizen, and the Democrats are hiding that fact from the American people.
And the Republicans are too stupid to seize on this obvious disqualification of their opponent.
And that's a reason why anyone should vote Republican ... because stupid leaders is what real Americans like best!?
They may be stupid, but they've certainly been in the driver's seat for awhile, and are smart? enough to con a whole lot of uncaring citizens of this country. I don't call it smart, I call it what it is - a whole lot of conservative psychologists in think tanks, programming the idiots that would never make it on their own - like bush, with the message to put out there to those they consider dummies.
It isn't smarts, it's just animal cunning.
