Koch Brothers: Secretive Billionaires With Eye on 2012 Creating Vast Database
David and Charles Koch, oil tycoons with strong right-wing views and connections, look set to tighten their grip on US politics
The secretive oil billionaires the Koch brothers are close to launching a nationwide database connecting millions of Americans who share their anti-government and libertarian views, a move that will further enhance the tycoons' political influence and that could prove significant in next year's presidential election.

(Photograph: Nicholas Kamm/AFP/Getty Images) The database will give concrete form to the vast network of alliances that David and Charles Koch have cultivated over the past 20 years on the right of US politics. The brothers, whose personal wealth has been put at $25bn each, were a major force behind the creation of the tea party movement and enjoy close ties to leading conservative politicians, financiers, business people, media figures and US supreme court judges.
The voter file was set up by the Kochs 18 months ago with $2.5m of their seed money, and is being developed by a hand-picked team of the brothers' advisers. It has been given the name Themis, after the Greek goddess who imposes divine order on human affairs.
In classic Koch style, the project is being conducted in great secrecy. Karl Crow, a Washington-based lawyer and Koch adviser who is leading the development, did not respond to requests for comment. Nor did media representatives for Koch Industries, the brothers' global energy company based in Wichita, Kansas.
But a member of a Koch affiliate organization who is a specialist in the political uses of new technology and who is familiar with Themis said the project was in the final preparatory stages. Asking not to be named, he said: "They are doing a lot of analysis and testing. Finally they're getting Themis off the ground."
The database will bring together information from a plethora of right-wing groups, tea party organizations and conservative-leaning thinktanks. Each one has valuable data on their membership – including personal email addresses and phone numbers, as well as more general information useful to political campaign strategists such as occupation, income bracket and so on.
By pooling the information, the hope is to create a data resource that is far more potent than the sum of its parts. Themis will in effect become an electoral roll of right-wing America, allowing the Koch brothers to further enhance their power base in a way that is sympathetic to, but wholly independent of, the Republican party.
"This will take time to fully realize, but it has the potential to become a very powerful tool in 2012 and beyond," said the new technology specialist.
Themis has been modeled in part on the scheme created by the left after the defeat of John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election. Catalyst, a voter list that shared data on supporters of progressive groups and campaigns, was an important part of the process that saw the Democratic party pick itself off the floor and refocus its electoral energies, helping to propel Barack Obama to the White House in 2008.
Josh Hendler, who until earlier this year was the Democratic National Committee's director of technology in charge of the party's voter files, believes Themis could do for the Kochs what Catalyst helped do for the Democrats.
"This increases the Koch brothers' reach. It will allow them to become even greater co-ordinators than they are already – with this resource they become a natural center of gravity for conservatives," Hendler said.
Though Charles, 75, and his younger brother David, 71, are very rarely seen or heard in public, their political importance in the US is hard to exaggerate. They have been steadily investing their wealth in projects designed to drive the country ever more to the right – they have backed the tea parties, funded incubators of radical conservative ideology such as the Mercatus Center at the George Mason University and hosted twice-yearly gatherings of some of the richest and most powerful figures in the country.
"What makes them unique is that they are not just campaign contributors; they are a vast political network in their own right," said Mary Boyle of the watchdog group, Common Cause.
They are estimated so far to have given more than $100m to right-wing causes. Kert Davies of Greenpeace estimates that the sum includes $55m since 1997 funding climate change deniers.
Many of the causes backed by the brothers clearly chime with their own self-interests. To encourage the denial of global warming science is obviously advantageous to businessmen who have made their fortunes in drilling and piping of oil; low taxation suits billionaires wanting to cut their own tax contributions; a bonfire of state regulations over business and the environment would be beneficial to a multinational corporation like Koch Industries, which is the second largest private company in the US.
But the two men are also anti-government ideologues who believe in what they preach, an inheritance from their fiercely anti-communist father Fred, who was a founder of the radical right-wing John Birch Society. David Koch stood as vice-presidential candidate for the Libertarian party in 1980 on a platform of doing away with a host of public bodies including the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the FBI, the CIA, social security, welfare, taxation and public schools.
Though the Kochs have already stamped their influence on the American right, their impact to date looks like small beer compared with their ambitious plans for 2012. According to Kenneth Vogel of Politico, the brothers intend to use their leverage among billionaire conservatives to pump more than $200m into the proceedings, focusing in particular on the presidential race.
Their potential to sway the electorate through the sheer scale of their spending has been greatly enhanced by Citizens United, last year's controversial ruling by the US supreme court that opened the floodgates to corporate donations in political campaigns. The ruling allows companies to throw unlimited sums to back their chosen candidates, without having to disclose their spending.
That makes 2012 the first Citizens United presidential election, and in turn offers rich pickings to the Koch brothers. They have already made clear their intentions. At their most recent billionaires' gathering in Vail, Colorado in June, Charles Koch described next year's presidential contest as "the mother of all wars". A tape of his private speech obtained by Mother Jones said the fight for the White House would be a battle "for the life or death of this country".
Exhorting the 300 guests in attendance to open their sizable wallets and donate to the Koch election coffers, he went on: "It isn't just your money we need. We need you bringing in new partners, new people. We can't do it alone. We have to multiply ourselves."
Which is where Themis comes in. Karl Crow, the spearhead of the new database, was one of the speakers at the June 2010 Koch gathering in Aspen, Colorado, where he described his mission under the heading "Mobilizing Citizens".
"Is there a chance to elect leaders who are more strongly committed to liberty and prosperity," he said, adding that he wanted to put forward a "strategic plan to educate voters on the importance of economic freedom".
At the same gathering, the kernel of the idea for Themis was unveiled as a "micro-targeting" initiative that would allow a more thorough understanding of the electorate. "How can we take advantage of this advanced technology?" the agenda asked.
By dint of the secrecy surrounding the project, it is not known which bodies have signed up for the database. But it is a reasonable guess that groups that are highly influential within the tea party movement such as Americans for Prosperity and Freedomworks, as well as right-wing think tanks like the Heritage Foundation, will be among the participants. Between them, they have tentacles that extend to millions of voters.
Lee Fang, a blogger at the Center for American Progress, thinks the combination of the Kochs' capital and their new voter files could have an immense impact in 2012. "This will be the first major election where most of the data and the organizing will be done outside the party nexus. The Kochs have the potential to outspend and out-perform the Republican party and even the successful Republican candidate."

Show AllDon't believe this FAIRY TALE. They are developing an ENEMIES LIST. It's time to let the Koch's know that they are very much within reach.
Stone: For a while I have felt their presence in these threads, especially in posts that support coal or nuclear power, while managing to smear the life work and reputations of notables on the Left. Also, it's very clear in the messages left by the climate deniers and supporters of Ron Paul (with one or two notable exceptions).--------------------------------------
A line from Scripture that's always moved me is:
"To the one much is given, much is expected."------------------------------------------------------
These 2 men, who expand their wealth and power by harming countless lives (as they fund attacks on unions and policies aimed at helping communities), while also working assiduously to destroy the natural world will have MUCH to answer for. Some in this forum don't believe in God, Universal Justice, Karma, reincarnation, or Divine Law... but their ignorance in no way disables the systems in place. And no one gets away with murder, especially not on the level enjoyed by morally bankrupt types like these two Scrooges. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I were in a position to mete out a judgment, I'd have them living inside one of the most dangerous urban cities, forced to see the challenges the very poor are up against. And each day they'd be assigned to jobs that were based on cleaning up, or otherwise improving the infrastructure found in these dens of hell largely cast to that status by the Engineers of Disaster Capitalism, a status enjoyed by the Koch Brothers very substantially.
It makes one wonder why the People of Kansas and New York tolerate their presence in their states. They are aggressively and overtly enemies of the People. If money is speech it must also be accompanied by responsibility. If it is not, then that speech should be silenced, non-violently if possible.
Stone: The kind of money these human tributes to Mammon have assembled can buy a lot of friends, not to mention judges and politicians. There are always those who will (or can) be bought which is sad, but true. Perhaps that answers your question
Will this Koch-friends database be called the tea party database ?
I probably wont be posting here much anymore because I have too much research and self-work to do. I am totally burnt-out on politics. Humanity needs a totally new worldview. Besides research (and meditation and contemplation) in spirituality I will be looking into monetary reform - like Ellen Brown's "Web of Debt" and the creation of local currencies in conjunction with the creation of Transition Towns, eco-villages and intentional communities.

The OWS movement will probably be very active at the political conventions in 2012, and how all of that plays out will indicate the next steps. But can we shame the psychopathic Greedsters into change? Libertarianism is just a souped-up version of the separative, atomized ego that humanity is trapped in, a kind of psychopathological adolescence. And it will probably take increasing catastrophes to break down those walls and knock people out of their complacency and/or denial.

But again, I must ask, in the face of the evolutionary process, how much "free will" do humans actually have, at least at this point? Is it possible that everything that happens and is happening is a lawful part of planetary evolution and that no matter how much we may bitch about it all, history is Gaia's - or the World Soul's - nightmare and that we, as humans, are instruments by which the World Soul evolves beyond this nightmare? In certain systems like Lurianic Kabbalah, the Cosmos is "fallen" at a stage before humans even exist, and further postulates that humans are the instruments for the redemption of the Cosmos - Tikun Olam or the Restoration of the World. The idea would be that we are involved in an alchemical transmutation of the Cosmos that may ultimately Divinize matter.

It is said that in life, you make mind, but in the Bardo realm, the between-lives realm, mind makes you, meaning that in the Bardo realm you reap what you sow during your lifetime, and this further determins your rebirth. In the Bardo realm, there is No Escape from facing the consequences of your actions. In this way, are beings slowly turned away from egoic selfishness and greed and powerlust, and turned toward self-transcendence and spiritual growth?

The point is, what is going on is so much bigger than what most people are aware of these days, but more and more people are awakening to the fact that they are much more than what they have been conditioned to believe. I will stop by now and then if I have something to share, but for the most part, I really dont have much to say about the political situation. Take care and I will see you around. Also, I recommend the website Reality Sandwich and the online book Sacred Economics by Charles Eisenstein, on RS.
Understandable to move to alternative survival techniques, which I believe the local movement is, in this environment. You will be missed here though.
KITAJ: You will be missed. You add so much DIMENSION to this forum... leading discussions well past the old, fixed parameters. Some fear the zone of the unknown. If you care to, google my name as it will pull up contact data. I'd like to send you a copy of my new book, "Dolphinity." The Tikkum Olam premise is there, along with an esoteric remedy for beginning the process of healing Mother Earth. It involves an inter-species commitment, and dolphins and whales factor into that promise.----------------------------------------------- After the BP wound to the Gulf of Mexico, the conversion of an intended movie script (originally written in l988) into the current book came to a stop. The reality of that event and its toxicity to the Gulf made the intended story ending impossible. I've spent time in Nepal meditating with Buddhist monks, and I more recently had the privilege of spending time in Peru where I observed certain practices of shamanism. These, and other spiritual experiences coalesced into what I hope is both an engaging story-line and basis for HOPE in otherwise dark times. I'll check out "Reality Sandwich" and Charles Eisenstein. During winter I'm outside less and read more, so thank you for the suggestions. May your journey continue to expand your mind and touch lives with Light and Wonder.
"For a while I have felt their presence in these threads, "
Easy Souix Rose, paranoia can destroy ya! Sure, they probably do have their trolls trying to impress the view of the greedy upon those of us who actuallyhave a conscience and sense of fairness. Unfortunately for them, we on the thinking side of the coin really don't have to even expend much effort to counter their arguements.
Remember...sociopathy doesn't affect but a small part of the population and as such, any arguements they make in favor of plunder are easily seen as excuses for greed by most of us.
"These 2 men, who expand their wealth and power by harming countless lives (as they fund attacks on unions and policies aimed at helping communities), while also working assiduously to destroy the natural world will have MUCH to answer for. Some in this forum don't believe in God, Universal Justice, Karma, reincarnation, or Divine Law... but their ignorance in no way disables the systems in place."
There are obviously very evil people (mostly rich white men in this particular country, but *ALWAYS* people who are already in positions of wealth/power who need even more...that seems to be an indisputable rule) who have used their positions of wealth and influence to do horrible things to the greater population in order to benefit themselves. As a brief list I include such fine people as Henry Kissenger, Robert McNamara, Poppy Bu$h, Richard Nixon, Dick Cheney (the king!), Dumbfuck Bu$h, The Koch Bros., Lloyd Blankfein, Jamie Dimon, KKKarl Rove, Paul Wolfowitz....the list is endless and I have literally lost sleep at night thinking that these criminals may escape justice.
But SouixRose, I have to believe as you do...there simply has to be justice and an equalization between right and wrong. I don't have the answer of how justice may eventually play itself out, but certainly the (for a lack of a better word) karmic balance of *EVERYTHING* would tend to balance the evil perpetrated by these evil people. I have to believe so to sleep. But, as with everything in the physical realm, there has to be balance for harmony. The universe is not done whith these evil people and those like them. Love rules all, unfortunately for these depraved souls, love is to abstract for them to comprehend as they live in the world of material wealth (he who has the most manufactured toys at death wins?) What they seemingly fail to comprehend is...love is the only thing you can take with you to the next life or whatever it may be. Greeedy people need not apply. (No...I'm not a "Christian" by any means, but I do believe in what he taught.).
"Some in this forum don't believe in God, Universal Justice, Karma, reincarnation, or Divine Law... but their ignorance in no way disables the systems in place."
Grow up...
Thank you for for keeping it it short and simple indeed grow up so should she!
The Koch Brothers, like scalia and his gang, are traitors of the 99%ers and the American People. Whatever can be done to take them down should be done. Their only concern is growing their plutocracy and making financial slaves of the rest of US. They begin their enslavement with the average debt that our College Graduates begin their lives with. Over $25,000 in debt, that unlike Koch and Scalia's beloved corporations, cannot ever remove that debt by bankruptcy. How many times has Trump used bankruptcy to protect his personal wealth? A Dozen?
Why are these openly Fascist psychopaths alive, let alone free? Their actions blatantly violate hundreds of laws, some even past the point of treason.
The Chris Hedges article answers your question.
Yep. Read it earlier.
I'm wading through Derrick Jensen's two volume 'Endgame' right now. Definitely worth a read.
I read it back in 2008. He was featured in the documentary "What A Way To Go: Life At The End Of Empire" which I saw in Seattle and met the director.
Happy to know that they are getting quite old and will die sooner rather than later, May their expiration from this earth be painful and lingering and full of fright as the jaws of hellfire chew them up. The brothers Cock; hopefully they never had time for families. It would be too bad for them as you can bet that the sins of the fathers will most certainly bring extreme punishment to the generations that have followed. Same for bush and all of these f&*king bastards.
TWO of the most greedy and full of themselves assholes alive, i guess he never forgave himself for not getting the rethug nomination in 80 or whatever yr. it was. so now they will buy it instead, only in amerika
Themis looks like a perfect target for anonymous.
Wow! A data base for the 1% to target the 99%. Sounds like another bogus, bogeyman to me.
Never underestimate the power and influence of the tools of modern psychological warfare aiming to brainwash or distract into ignorance whole populations. The latest probing findings of psychology on human instincts, responses, vulnerabilities are studied with endless ambition. All to the end of "manufacturing consent" to the will and aims of the rich and powerful individuals and corporations who fund and control the propaganda machinery. The political/corporate system has well learned that it can tell open blatant lies and if done over and over, a considerable part of the people will believe the lie as truth---the infamous method the Nazi propagandists extolled as The Technique of the Big Lie. Once one's friends, family, neighbors, fellow workers start repeating the big Lie as truth, it is difficult for most individuals to stand in opposition, let alone challenge the lie outright. All this is as Edward Bernays, founder with Ivy Lee, of modern public relations/professional lying termed it "the necessary manipulation of the mass public mind" and we all have seen numerous examples of it working in recent years. The Koch and other corporate monies in the hundreds of millions $$$$ will be used increasingly to blitz the nation a large part of which is already deeply immersed in the distorted world view of Faux News, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity and their all too numerous imitators.-------------------
What makes the Occupy movement such a breath of fresh air is to see more and more individuals worldwide challenging many of the core lies we have all had rained down upon us for years.
COURT JESTER: Great post. I remember reading a metaphysical thinker, Joseph Murphy years ago who explained that most people don't think, they allow (what he termed) the "Race Mind" to do their thinking for them. This stream represents the flow of all the unquestioned beliefs that become assimilated as norms. Religions feature a good number, but so, too, do the abundant "Manufacturing Consent" media forums along with related movies & songs. One thing to add here is that the ones studying behavior modification also make use of the UNCONSCIOUS so that they can discover ways to bypass critical thought or any attempts on the part of the individual ego structure to set up a firewall against these types of incursions into its sphere of alleged free will. Remember how the subliminal advertising campaigns were flashing sexual pictures to get people excited about products? Malls use subliminal sound systems to get people to shop, or did so, until it was rendered illegal. And just as movies spend mega-bucks on sound tracks to manipulate viewers' emotions, sounds both heard and those passing under the radar, also influence "choices."
The Republican voters are only 20% of voters. Tea Party types are only 4% of that 20%. Indeed, the Koch Brothers can focus the voters that they garner. But to win the election, they have to also gain voters that are not Far Right Wing Republicans. They hold no appeal for Independents. The Tea Party idea sucked in elderly people who were listening to Fox News exclusively. Now, even those voters are not as gullible as they used to be. Money can't buy the Koch Brothers "Love", or a Presidential election if those opposed to them counter their propaganda in the media.
Given how easy it is for the So-called 'Black Box' vote machine makers to tamper with the vote, do you REALLY think these psychopaths NEED the number of votes you think they do?
One recent experiment showed all you needed to 'adjust' the vote totals remotely on these machines was $26 in commonly available computer parts, and some knowledge of coding.
American Democracy(tm)? Don't make me laugh.
The Koch Brothers are not true Libertarians.... they are Facists. They like welfare programs for corporate personhood, deregulation, spying on Americans (see this article) and a big military industrial complex fighting endless wars.
Their preferences exactly match Pres. Obama as well as the most of the Republican candidates.
Remember Obama is only getting troops out of Iraq because the Iraqis drew a line in their sand over legal immunity a couple of weeks ago, not because of his campaign promise to do so. Hillary will still fund, through the state department, tens of thousands of paramilitary mercenaries / contractors in Iraq.
From what I gather the Koch Brothers hate Ron Paul who campaigns on real Libertarianism.
As you all probably heard by now, Republic presidential candidate Herman Cain said that he was: "A brother of the Kochs by another mother." This made me wonder if Herman's father knew that the Koch patriarch, Fred Koch was having an adulterous relationship with Herman's mother, the result of which is this Koch/Cain connection.
MEL
cain misspoke. He meant to say 'mofo'.
Let the robo-calls and mass mailings begin!
Charles, 75, and his younger brother David, 71,... I guess it is still hard to believe someone who is that elderly is also 'active' in any sense, too old to do much but conspire to drive this country toward a destroyed economy, a ruined environment, a police state.
Scary pair.
Josh Hendler sez: "... with this resource they become a natural center of gravity for conservatives."
***
I'm no astrophysicist, but can't "center of gravity" also describe a black hole?
Nobody should be so rich and powerful
Dlirect democracy
It is ok to be very wealthy and powerful, but the wealthy didn't get there without the middle class and poor. Most very wealthy people are humanitarians giving and volunteering to help the people that made them so comfortable, not just squeezing them for everything they can squeeze them for. It is my opinion that the republicans more than the democrats are protecting these ass holes, they are willing to destroy the economy of America just for the power of the white house, then the Koch brothers will have bought our country. Rupert Murdock and his friends will own America, insurance companies, big corporations, roves, Cheney, big oil, coal, etc. Good by America!
"Most very wealthy people are humanitarians giving and volunteering to help the people that made them so comfortable..."
I don't find that to be true.
"Worth 25bn each." Not only are corporations considered to be people by the legal system, some people become corporations. Do these two bleed if you cut them?
The last time I heard Themis in the news was in the context of Anonymous breaching the security of HBGary Federal and dumping their e-mail spools. I went back and found some of the original articles here's a quote:
"Team Themis," a group comprised of Palantir, Berico, and HBGary Federal, which got involved with the DC law firm Hunton & Williams. Hunton & Williams was looking for ways to help the US Chamber of Commerce, and later a major US bank, deal with troublesome opponents (pro-union websites and WikiLeaks, respectively.)
Coincidence?
your posts are hard to read. Maybe if you didn't add all the lines it would work better.
Shadowdancer's posts are meant to be hard to read.
Shadowdancer loves to write about what a waste of time it is to write anything and how jesus lived with the indians.
SHADOW: I noticed you didn't post for several weeks, maybe more; and I, for one, missed you and am glad to see you posting here again. Your satire on the way modern people live is witty, timely, and holds up an important mirror. The arrogance of science, added to the way the old sin of greed melded itself into capitalism, and got to work vigorously manipulating and marketing every real or imagined appetite under the sun, has gotten us to the point where the living planet is in many places dying. If this is the cost of so-called civilization, I'm with you. And I agree, that life is quite a journey (and experience), and it IS best to forgive. The hardest thing to forgive may well be the misuse of free will on the part of those who have made things so difficult, even deadly, for so many. Earth is the school where free will is gradually refined... and where evolution of the Spirit is intended. It's a slower process than forming a marvel as striking as The Grand Canyon.
The solution is for EVERYONE to get on their list every way they can, thus diluting and ruining it for any real use. Once the list becomes nothing more that a list of names independent of political affiliation, it's useless to the Kock criminals.
One can only hope that some smart hackers either disable or copy or both this bit of tech, leveling the playing field. In fact this list, in the right hands, is just as useful to the left as it is to the right.
"Though Charles, 75, and his younger brother David, 71", not too far from the grave, are still pre-occupied with their infantile need to horde.
Yeah, Charles and David both have a death grip on their wallets.
there is millions like-brothers working 24/7 including terrorists

CIA Analysts Comb Social Media For Trouble Spots
by The Associated Press
November 4, 2011
"In an anonymous industrial park, CIA analysts who jokingly call themselves the "ninja librarians" are mining the mass of information people publish about themselves overseas, tracking everything from common public opinion to revolutions.
The group's effort gives the White House a daily snapshot of the world built from tweets, newspaper articles and Facebook updates.
The agency's Open Source Center sometimes looks at 5 million tweets a day. The analysts are also checking out TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms — anything overseas that people can access and contribute to openly".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what else is new? The routine is to perfect it overseas and then bring it to the forefront of our domestic economy. Technically the CIA can't do that here although they are already training Police Forces all under the guise of the Security State readiness. Of course nothing is stopping the Privatization monarchs of capitalism from financing IT systems of their choice...
Unless of course it is "occupied" pre-emptively.
This sounds like the possiblity of a new political party to challenge the power of the existing corporate, capitalist parties.
Unfortunately, it will probably be the newest Nazi party.
This could backfire. Imagine if the Allied powers after WWII gained access to a hard drive which had the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the German people who sided with Hitler.
imagine people have own data base to know each other to plan common future
It's almost daily that we read of one more reason why the Amerikan government needs regime change. The greedy-rich have stacked the deck against any hope of workers to survive under the present system. The rich white men, who drew up the US Constitution, made certain their were enough loopholes for the rich white men of the 21st century to tighten their stranglehold on workers.
Apparently a Washington protest group surrounded a building where David Koch was holding a meeting. Hopefully this kind of action will send a message that no one is out of reach and that the People are watching.
