Nearly 50 Progressive Groups Urge Pelosi and Schumer to Pursue Bold Relief Package

WASHINGTON

Following this week's passage of another coronavirus relief deal and news of Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plan to originate the next, much-needed relief package in the Democratically-controlled House, nearly 50 progressive organizations joined in a letter calling for Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, and congressional Democrats to lead with a bold, inclusive relief plan that meets the urgent needs of every person in America -- and that progressive groups and their members can enthusiastically champion in the days ahead.

Democratic leaders have the opportunity and responsibility to push a bold, inclusive approach, given that Republicans have been seeking to use this crisis to solidify their hold on power, further enrich their already-wealthy donors, and undermine democracy. With unemployment numbers surpassing 26 million, the majority of the public disapproves of President Donald Trump's failed leadership and is demanding bold action.

The letter underscores the need to address the structural racism that has led to disproportionate infection and death rates for Black people and other people of color, and advocates for using this pivotal moment to fight for relief, care, and safety for everyone, regardless of immigration, employment, or incarceration status.

A truly sufficient relief plan would include, according to the letter, "immediate, adequate and sustained economic relief for the duration of the crisis for all people in this country, the Essential Workers Bill of Rights, access to quality health care for all, child care and expanded safety net support," ensure that "every eligible voter can cast a safe vote in the next election," and reject any attempts to enrich billionaires, corporations, or President Trump himself.

Among the groups that have signed are MoveOn, Community Change Action, Indivisible, People's Action, CPD Action, Care in Action, Demos, ColorOfChange, and Working Families Party.

People's Action builds the power of poor and working people, in rural, suburban, and urban areas to win change through issue campaigns and elections.
