Heartwarming Massacres from Iraq to Libya
On January 28, 2003, George W. Bush gave a 50-minute State of the Union address, nearly half of which was devoted to his decision to invade Iraq. During this segment, he didn’t mention oil or, God forbid, the petro dollar even once, but focused relentlessly on weapons of mass destruction. America and the rest of the world were threatened by a dictator who was “assembling the world's most dangerous weapons,” “a brutal dictator with a history of reckless aggression, with ties to terrorism,” so that “this nation and our friends” were “all that stand between a world at peace, and a world of chaos and constant alarm.” The decision to attack Iraq, then, was a sacred, providential duty, a “call of history has come to the right country.” Bush concluded, “America is a strong nation and honorable in the use of our strength. We exercise power without conquest, and we sacrifice for the liberty of strangers.”
Though America is always engaged in several wars simultaneously, she really hates to make wars, so we’re told by each U.S. President. An American war is always humanitarian in aim and execution. We wage war not because we love to kick ass, then go home, not because we’re born to kill, murder ‘em all, let God sort ‘em out, etc, but because we love foreigners, actually, the browner the better. It doesn’t matter if they have petroleum or not, or if they’re scarfed with a keffiyeh (while eating a donut). America wages war out of compassion.
Thus, this week, we’re told by Obama that his attack on Libya is to prevent innocents from being massacred and chaos from spreading, “For generations, the United States of America has played a unique role as an anchor of global security and advocate for human freedom. Mindful of the risks and costs of military action, we are naturally reluctant to use force to solve the world’s many challenges.” Reluctant, yes, but not when it is America’s duty, again, to attack a sovereign nation, “To brush aside America’s responsibility as a leader and—more profoundly—our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are. Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as President, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action.”
Like Bush, Obama did not mention oil once, but surely, some of you are saying, this is not really about oil, again? Here are the facts: Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa. Sweeter and cheaper to extract than elsewhere, Libyan oil is also easier to bring to market, thanks to its proximity to Europe. About three fourths of this is exported to NATO countries, primarily Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Greece and the U.K. With the exception of Germany, these are also the main European nations attacking Libya, along with the USA.
But why attack Ghaddafi if he’s already selling you oil? Why upset the status quo? It’s because on January 25, 2009, Gaddafi declared, "The oil-exporting countries should opt for nationalization because of the rapid fall in oil prices. We must put the issue on the table and discuss it seriously. Oil should be owned by the State at this time, so we could better control prices by the increase or decrease in production."
The countries with oil concessions in Libya are Italy, France, Spain, the US, the UK, Norway, Russia and Germany. See a pattern here? Norway is also in the US-led coalition to attack Libya. It’s noteworthy that France is particularly belligerent this time. In 2003, by contrast, France was vehemently against invading Iraq, since it had much dealing with Hussein and would lose much should he be replaced.
To Francophobes, France’s stance on Iraq proved that it had no backbone, as suspected, that it would fight with its feet and, ahem, make love with its face, as the saying goes, that it wouldn’t stand up to terrorists. Two American congressmen, Robert Ney and Walter Jones, even started a campaign to rename french fries “freedom fries.” What a way to go down in history. To Francophiles, however, France was to be applauded for refusing to be cowed by America, but the truth is much simpler. France didn’t want to lose the billions Hussein already owed it, and the billions it would make if he stayed in power. It came down, as it always does in these situations, to money.
And so it is with Libya. Wanting to gain access to Libya’s oil, the United States is not just helping one side in a civil war, but directing the fight. The rebel’s military leader is a long time CIA asset, Khalifa Hifter. Before returning to Benghazi last week, Hifter spent two decades in Northern Virginia, a five minute drive from CIA headquarters.
The rebels are flying the old flag of the Kingdom of Libya. Some are carrying photos of King Idris. Even the French flag has been displayed, leading French Prime Minister Fillon to proclaim, "There is hope in Benghazi now, the French flag is being waved there, and also the flag of a different Libya which dreams of democracy and modernization." I would not equate flying a monarchical flag and the flag of a country that colonized a good chunk of Northern Africa not that long ago with “dreams of democracy and modernization.” Under King Idris, Libya was also host to American and British military bases. With 4,600 Yanks, Wheelus air base was even dubbed “Little America by the Mediterranean.” Gaddafi ended all that.
Funny, but the same countries that now attack Gaddafi sold him lots of weapons, more than a billion’s worth since 2005. The British Special Air Service even trained Libyan Special Forces, and American war colleges instructed Libyan military officers “to fight terrorists.” From the Libyan government’s point of view, the rebels now supported by America and the rest sure fit that description.
To gain access to oil, all these countries armed a man they now call a mad dog, but Gaddafi didn’t just become a tyrant two weeks ago. He’s been embraced by Tony Blair, feted by Nicolas Sarkozy, visited by John McCain and even had his hand kissed by Silvio Berlusconi, so everything was manageable until he threatened to nationalize Libya’s oil in 2009. As he became perfectly sane, at least from the Libyan point of view, as he promised to distribute more oil revenues to his own people, the West decided he must be ousted.
We will see if Obama can stick to his promise of sending no ground troops, but for now, the alliance is fighting strictly from the air. This is macabrely appropriate as Tripoli, Libya was the site of the first air assault in world history. A century ago, during Italy’s invasion, Giulio Gavotti dropped four hand grenades onto an Ottoman Empire encampment. He had no idea how many he killed. Then, as now, it’s impossible to countenance anyone’s mortality from such a height. In any case, Gavotti landed a hero. Italy’s best known poet at the time, Gabriele D’Annunzio, lauded him, “From your wing you hurl your bomb / On an instant massacre; and it appears / Your live heart is warmed.”
Now, as foreign planes fly over Libya yet again, we are told that the people below are grateful. Thanks for the depleted uranium, Sirs! My children and my children’s children will also thank you. As least in the desert, there won’t be any agent orange raining down. An American pilot had to parachute because his plane malfunctioned. According to Obama, he was greeted by a young Libyan “who came to his aid [and] said, ‘We are your friends. We are so grateful to these men who are protecting the skies.’” Was this young Libyan speaking in English, or did the pilot understand Arabic? Can you spell CIA? Do you smell a fish?

Damn, I love this guy!
Another poignant piece by Linh Dinh!
When I scroll down the daily list of articles on CD and see one authored by Linh Dinh, I feel like a child on Christmas morning! I consider Linh (and other refugees from Vietnam) the only positive from Amerikkk’s criminal actions there.
Ps I forgot to put on my glasses and the CIA asset being groomed to carry out the West’s takeover has a last name that gave me goosebumps.
Yes, I read Hitler too ...
From the article: 'According to Obama, he was greeted by a young Libyan “who came to his aid [and] said, ‘We are your friends. We are so grateful to these men who are protecting the skies.’” Was this young Libyan speaking in English, or did the pilot understand Arabic? Can you spell CIA? Do you smell a fish?" '
Very interesting. Yesterday on one of the 6:30PM M$M news reports they showed our "freedom fighters" in retreat. There was a guy on the side of the road waving the cars on, yelling out in ENGLISH (I don't remember the exact words but along the lines of) "Come on, come on, lets go, lets go". Immediately I thought why would a Libyan be directing other libyans in ENGLISH!
It would be easy to miss because it only lasted about 5 seconds, but it made me think WTF? I wonder how many others caught it.
Good catch.
The conspiracy and collusion of the powers that be. Shocking in its shamelessness, immorality, and pervasiveness.
I can only afford to weep for these people. The ME uprisings were like the scene at the end of 1984, after Winston has already been brainwashed and is at the little cafe drinking gin and watching the news of the African army advancing. For a fleeting moment, Winston entertains hope in his heart that the African army will continue advancing, win the war and liberate them. Then immediately, a gin-laden tear rolls down his cheek and he realizes that there is no hope and their condition is permanent. The ME revolutions were humanity fleeing moment of hope. We can all go back to drinking Victory gin and counting 2 + 2 = 5.
In the novel, if my recollections are right, the last sentence is Winston Smith expressing his love for Big Brother as he is led to his execution.
The wonderful, surrealist, zany knock-off-of-1984 movie "Brazil" ends similarly.
You recall incorrectly. I just read 1984, again. But I understand what you're saying and agree with you.
Beyond, behind, and complicit in the "Heartwarming Massacres from Iraq to Libya" of which Linh Dinh so eloquently writes, are "Quiet Americans" --- serving a disguised ruling-elite global corporate/financial/militarist EMPIRE which has existed and evolved since before he was born in 1963 in Vietnam.
Graham Greene confronted the Empire then with fictional truth in his fantastic book, "The Quiet American" about the global Empire's lies, deceit, plotting, and wars then --- which resulted in "Heartwarming Massacres from Vietnam to Laos".
As Americans today trapped in the belly of this ruling-elite global corporate/financial/militarist Empire, which has grown like a cancer since the 1960's war in Vietnam, we all have a special responsibility to confront the Empire which now in 2011 almost fully controls our former country by hiding behind the facade of its bought and owned TWO-Party "Vichy" sham of faux-democratic government and corporatist media lies.
Therefore, I wrote the following simple questions to the Empire's 'liar of record' about their 'story' of US ground forces in Libya -- and the lies of the Empire's faux-emperor-president regarding not just the escalating war in Libya, but the entire area of N. Africa, the greater Middle East, and SW Asia.
It is only by confronting Empire with truth and exposing the Empire's lies that the people can excise the cancer of Empire and achieve true Liberty and democracy over empire.
[Post to NYT cover story today on Libya and Obama's Monday night lies about the Empire's real war plans]
"Soooo, just to clarify the accuracy (and complete candor, without lies of omission) of this NYT reporting, which tells us some additional information about the use of military force by the US, UK (aka global Empire) in Libya, beyond the omissions that Obama 'forgot' to mention Monday night, we need only to ask TWO questions:
1. Are the only US forces on the ground in Libya, those approved by the 'finding' that Obama used to authorize the insertion of CIA forces? ---- or are there additional US "special forces" military forces already in Libya which this NYT US media 'come clean' report today does NOT mention, just as Obama did NOT mention as a lie of omission on Monday?
2. What is the strategic relationship between what the US (Empire) is doing in beginning military intervention in Libya N. Africa, and between Thomas Barnett's Naval War College and national security state "hot read" book, "The Pentagon's New Map" --- which promulgated a 'Quiet American' war plan within the entire swath of "Gap" countries across the 5000 mile area of N. Africa, the entire Middle East and SW Asia, from Mauritania to AfPak boarders, and which the well-known and influential CIA-connected "journalist" Bob Woodward was clearly hinting about Sunday on the Boeing-sponsored and GE weapons builder's NBC TV network 'show' "Meet the Press" when he said: "I’m not sure whether it’s unrest, an upheaval, whether these are revolutions. But in a 5,000 mile area from Mauritania to Afghanistan, you have to kind of put all this together. The president has a mammoth management problem. There is deep unhappiness, as there should be, about do we know what’s going on in these countries? And the intelligence agencies are scrambling because they cover the leaders and not the people who are the revolutionaries or the rebels or the people involved in this upheaval.”??

PS. Linh may appreciate seeing that the current "Quiet American" president-emperor in Washington, Obama, serving Empire's deceitful and deadly goals for "Heartwarming Massacres from Libya to Lahore" is merely a far more senior political pawn than was the "Quiet American" who started the Empire's wars in Vietnam before Linh was even born ---- and Obama's deceptive imperial actions will undoubtedly blow-up infants across N. Africa and the Middle East, as Linh himself was luckily and thankfully not blown-up in 1963 by a lesser and fictional (but true) "Quiet American" on the ground in Vietnam.
Dude, since you call me a troll and then refuse to explain, let me give you some "troll" advice. From what I read here on CD, there are some serious problems in the state of Maine. Why don't you try to remedy the problems in your own backyard before solving the problems in North Africa. I have lived in North Africa, had a resident visa there. I've visited Maine. I try to solve the problems in my immediate vicinity. When I was in North Africa (1996), I was well-respected and had many friends there. Some people cried real tears of sadness when I left. When I was in Maine (1976), I was with a happy bunch of people and did not see any problems.
Anyway, if you want to call someone a troll, at least be human-enough to give an intelligent explanation. Or, just be a smart-ass - up to you.
Ah but you see, America's addiction to oil knows no bounds.
This author is really good. What happened to the article he had written just a few days ago? It was disappeared.
sLiMsHaDy, your inquiry about Linh Dinh's previous article is from Fri 3/25 "Winding Down Obama", and relates to 'winding down war' and 'winding down empire'.
Best,
Alan

Why does US suddenly care about [fill in the blank] ?
http://tinyurl.com/yj9g382
The US government doesn't care. They want to do something that "appears" to care so, when questioned, they can point at it and say, "See, that's what we're doing; shows we care."
*the [fill in the blank] crisis is following a pattern which is so well-worn now that it has almost become routine. Saturation reporting from a crisis region; emergency calls for help broadcast on the electronic media (such as the one recently on the BBC Radio 4 flagship ‘ Today’ programme); televised pictures of refugees; lurid stories of “mass rapes”, which are surely designed to titillate as much to provoke outrage; reproachful evocations of the Rwandan genocide; demands that something must be done (“How can we stand idly by?”, etc.); editorials in the Daily Telegraph calling for a return to the days of Rudyard Kipling’s benevolent imperialism[6] ; and, finally, the announcement that plans are indeed being drawn up for an intervention.*

Oops. Said it twice. It isn't good enough to bear being repeated.
Mark my words:
The cherry on top will be getting the "Lockerbie Bomber" back in prison.
Just be patient...
Thank you, Linh Dinh, for bringing the truth to the light of day, and in such well-written form!!!!!!!
To sLiMsHaDy:
Linh Dinh's previous article is to be found under March 25, 2011, here at CD.
Linh Dinh provides a refreshing honesty that is a real antidote to sanctimonious windbags like Juan Cole.
Thanks, Linh, for filling in the last blanks. I was asking the same question you presented rhetorically: "why attack a guy who's already selling you oil?". Like many, I got hung up on this one. What I did *not* know was that Q made those remarks about nationalization in 2009. Everything else falls into place now, especially the timeline. I can't thank you enough for putting that together for your audience. Even the more independent and left-leaning media have completely botched this job, much like the Iranian situation last year.
So they've been spending all this intervening time grooming and arming the "rebels" and waiting for an opportunity. That place must be crawling with spooks. I really can't hate the Democratic party enough for this shit. First Honduras, then this. What fucking pigs.
drone, don't fire your Hellfire missile at the wrong or insubstantial target, when you say, "I really can't hate the Democratic party enough".
Aim more carefully from your Predator, drone, and fire your hateful Hellfires precisely at the heart of the target --- at the global Empire.
Don't waste your powder firing at either of these phony "Vichy" parties that the Empire uses to fool 'pasties', drone, shoot at the real heart of the Empire --- which is only using both "Vichy" parties as 'human shields', the way Gaddafi does.
Don't waste ammo boys, wait til you see the "whites of the Empire's eyes" --- then fire, drone!
Best luck hitting the right target,

there's another option, brother alan, and that's to load up on missles to make sure you can hit everything you need to...:)
Another outstanding essay from Linh Dinh.
I guess I'd have to think so, since it resonates so well with my own thoughts, reflected in a CD comment on March 18th, when the U.N. authorized the "no-fly zone" in Libyan airspace that set the predictable mission creep in motion:
_____________________
Over and over again-- from Vietnam to Panama to the Balkans to Iraq and Afghanistan-- the political and military leaders of the West, led by the Amerikan imperium, have gone to war on the premise that there is a Truly Evil Dictator (or totalitarian regime) who is oppressing Persons Sitting in Darkness who cry out to heaven for help!
And isn't Amerika the closest place to heaven on Earth, and its political and military leaders the closest beings to angels around?
Yes, this latest action is being taken by the "United Nations". But it's no accident that New York City is home to the United Nations, which in these circumstances is much like that association of comic-book superheroes, The Justice League of Amerika.
And the U.S. is its "Superman"; nothing much gets done without its permission and cooperation.
Such intervention is always accompanied by a one-two punch of rhetorical realpolitik: it's in the immediate, narrow interests of the oppressed populace of the target nation to intervene, and also in the long-term international interests of the intervenors-- i.e., promoting international "peace", security, and mutual prosperity.
And over and over again, even before the dust settles it's obvious that this noble altruistic motivation was but a glittering shroud to cover the worst crimes of despotic multinational capitalism-- manipulative political mendacity and hype to grease the skids of the war buccaneers' juggernaut and turn the cumbrous iron of public dissent into the fools' gold of enthusiastic support.
Yet, every time this recurring scenario presents itself, like a well-known three-card monte scammer setting up a card table in a new alleyway, a crowd automatically starts lining up to play.
Maybe it would help if we razed monuments like the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, restored Mount Rushmore to its pre-disfigured appearance, and instead erected vast statues of P.T. Barnum and Charles Ponzi to remind Amerikans of our true national character.
And moved the U.N. to the Cayman Islands while we're at it.
As Linh Dinh notes, America loves to kill (oops, I meant help) brown people. There's a bonus if they are Muslim. And if they happen to have oil, then, by God, it's our Christian duty to bomb the hell out of them.
Thanks to Linh Dinh for his eloquent synopsis of the situation. Business will continue to go on as usual, and all the political brouhaha about consulting Congress, etc. just serves as a distraction for the chattering masses.
He really does write well. Also anyone who hasn't checked out his photos on his State of the Union blog ought to. They're good too.
Dinh Linh, you are amazing. Thank you for cutting through the usual crap.
Another great article knocked out of the park.
Linh Dinh should be required reading for every American!! An other excellent article.
By looking at those uprisings, wars and various US-friendly dictatorships around the Middle East and the Arab World, from the Maghreb to the Indian subcontinent it occurred to me, that it's starting to look like one big empire with smaller caliphates, something like the old Soviet Union used to be. Cobbled together by violent means to serve a certain purpose. In this instance it might be for the possession of resources (of course mainly oil and gas, but also the important transport routes) and also the protection of Israel.
As long as the US military can protect their stooges and continue to fight wars, it'll all resemble the ill-remembered Soviet Union, but when the US Empire crumbles from within, there might be some real liberation in the area.
Another excellent essay from Linh Dinh!
