Thousands Protest SB1070; Arizona Gov. Braces for Lawsuits
Over Memorial Day weekend, tens of thousands of people marched in Phoenix, AZ to protest SB1070, a law that immigrants to carry papers at all times and makes it possible for any police officer to detain on suspicion of immigration status alone.
At RaceWire, Jorge Rivas reports that “an official crowd estimate was not available for Saturday’s SB1070 protest,” but that “officials overheard on the police scanner estimated the crowd at about 30,000.” Marchers also demanded that President Barack Obama nullify SB1070 by means of a legal challenge from the Justice Department.
Phoenix has become well-known for its anti-immigrant hysteria. The city is part of Maricopa County, home to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is being sued by the American Civil Liberties Union for racial profiling after targeting Latino neighborhoods and work sites for raids. The Sheriff has also garnered addition civil rights lawsuits and a pending investigation by the Justice Department relating to civil liberties violations in Arpaio’s “Tent City” jail.
Meanwhile, the fate of a comprehensive immigration reform bill is up in the air. The U.S. Senate is balking at the issue, even though reform proponents continue to participate in civil disobedience actions and marches.
Bring in the Justice Department
But there may be hope. Jessica Pieklo at Care2 writes that “It is becoming clearer and clearer that the only resolution to this issue will be a federal-state showdown, reminiscent of the ordered de-segretation of the South.” This week, unidentified Justice Department officials traveled to Phoenix to discuss SB1070, which be enforced on July 29th. They came to no consensus.
In response to the number of anticipated legal challenges against SB1070, not to mention mounting national pressure, Eric Lach reports for TPM Live Wire that Gov. Jan Brewer will “have outside counsel defend the state against legal challenges to the laws — not the state’s Attorney General Terry Goddard, a Democrat and one of Brewer’s opponents in Arizona’s gubernatorial race.” The announcement came shortly after federal officials traveled to the state to discuss SB1070.
Cops against SB1070
Back at Care2, Pieklo also notes that SB1070 has polarized Arizona’s law enforcement community, with “Sheriff Joe Arpaio and some associations representing rank-and-file officers supporting it while a number of police chiefs have expressed growing unease with the law and see it as a means of driving a wedge between law enforcement and the Latino community, which represents approximately one in three legal Arizona residents.”
Where’s Congress?
The U.S. Senate has been notably absent from the immigration reform debate. Even though a reform proposal is already on the House floor, if the Senate doesn’t introduce a bill soon, immigration reform will likely fail this year. Despite two separate proposed drafts of plans for a bill in the Senate, nothing has been introduced officially. Even if a bill is introduced, the Senate still needs time to debate it, which makes for an uneasy race against the clock.
Immigration and elections
AlterNet reporter Michele Waslin examines the how the immigration issue has influenced recent electoral primaries. “For the last several years Congress has failed come up with a solution, despite the evidence that this is an important issue to their constituencies,” Waslin writes.
“Because Congress hasn’t acted and the problem isn’t resolving itself, some states and localities have taken action—some out of a genuine desire to fix the problem, and others to score political points. The newly passed law in Arizona and the various copycats are evidence that the states are not backing down.”
Currently, the chances that the Senate will have the gumption to take on a reform bill appear bleak, especially with a Congressional election in November.
‘We want common sense to rule’
Meanwhile, the White House’s decision to send 1,200 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border has drawn sharp criticism from border communities in Texas. Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz, who represents roughly 7,000 constituents along the Rio Grande, lobbied against the troop deployment.
“Before Congress throws more money at the border, we’re asking them to take a step back and assess whether it’s working first,” Franz said in an interview with The Texas Observer. “We want common sense to rule. We don’t want wasteful spending, and we don’t need any more walls.”

Show AllI just saw Gov. Brewer speak outside the White House after meeting with Obama. She seems like an older, more wrinkled version of Palin - although she can put a complete sentence together.
Why does Phoenix have the largest number of kidnappings in the Northen Hemisphere? Doesn't sound very safe. It is the second largest kidnap capital in the world.
Good night.

In yesterday's Arizona Republic, Mr. J. Forster of Phoenix
offered this suggestion in Letters to the Editor.
Arizona citizens should erect a billboard on northbound Interstate 10
from Mexico, just south of Casa Grande that says in Spanish:
"Attention, illegal immigrants.
Arizona does not welcome you. But Los Angeles loves you. Free housing.
Free school.
Free food. Free medical and hospital. No insurance costs nor taxes.
Turn left on (Route) 8 and follow your road to paradise"
Ardent, google FBI's "Chicago most Wanted" and "Seattle Most Wanted". Look at the surnames.
Those cities are not on your beloved border yet Latinos seem to "represent".
What's up with that????
Here's a reality check, grasshopper:
San Diego - www.sdsheriff.net
El Paso - http://spotcrime.com/tx/el+paso/mostwanted
Austin - http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/police/downloads/apd_top10_most_wanted.pdf
Phoenix -http://www.azdps.gov/Services/Most_Wanted/Wanted/
Read the surnames.
A quick tally indicates Hispanics are committing over 70% of the crimes in those areas.
Take away that percentage and crime would be almost nonexistent.
Mendoza is a hack....

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS BEHIND SB 1070
SB 1070 and CRIME
Q: Didn’t the state legislature need to do something about the crime caused by illegal immigration in Arizona?
A: Despite the claims that SB 1070 was needed to fight crime in the state, Arizona’s crime rate has been falling for years.
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, the rates for both property crime and violent crime (including murder, assault, and rape) have been falling in Arizona in recent years.
* The violent crime rate fell from 512 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 447 per 100,000 people in 2008, the last year for which data is available.
* The property crime rate fell from 5,850 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 4,291 per 100,000 people in 2008.
* Rates for murder, aggravated assault, and rape in particular have clearly fallen in recent years.
Q: Don’t illegal immigrants cause crime?
A: Unauthorized immigration is not associated with higher crime rates.
* Although the unauthorized immigrant population doubled to about 12 million from 1994 to 2004, data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicates that the violent crime rate in the United States declined by 35.1 percent during this time and the property crime rate fell by 25.0 percent.
* The decline in crime rates was not just national, but also occurred in border cities and other cities with large immigrant populations such as San Diego, El Paso, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Miami.
Q: But surely there is a rise in border crime related to illegal immigration?
A: Border cities are not necessarily prone to higher crime due simply to their location. As a story in Reason Magazine describes, El Paso, Texas—which is a relatively poor and heavily Latino city that is home to many unauthorized immigrants—is among the safest big cities in the United States, even though it is next door to the violence-ridden Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez.
Q: What about the kidnappings in Phoenix that have received so much media attention?
A: There are serious issues relating to human trafficking that need to be addressed, but SB 1070 won’t stop the kind of kidnappings going on today. Most of these kidnappings are occurring among members of criminal gangs that smuggle drugs, guns, and unauthorized immigrants—or are targeting unauthorized immigrants who are in the process of being smuggled.
* A May 2010 report by the Rocky Mountain Information Network notes that “Phoenix ranks only behind Mexico City in the number of kidnappings, most if not all of which are tied to drug cartels in Mexico.” Moreover, “undocumented aliens are held against their will by human smugglers and traffickers at ‘drop house’ locations throughout Phoenix and surrounding cities.”
* In explaining the large number of kidnappings which have occurred in the Phoenix area, police Sgt. Tommy Thompson told The Arizona Republic in July 2009: “We’re talking about drop houses where people who have used coyotes to get into the country may be held for ransom. And we’re talking about the kidnapping of smugglers and associates. I have no fear that my kids or grandkids will be victims.”
FYI, Phoenix was labelled the kidnap capital of the Nortern Hemisphere in July of 2009. It didn't occur before that. Your 2008 source means nothing. You bring nothing to the table, except insults. Hope the chronological info helps in your data search to prove Phoenix a safe living area.
Clueless should be listed as one of your capabilities.
Does any country just open the doors and allow everyone to come in?
That would only work in a country where no one wanted in.
The state of Arizona is being ridiculed, attacked and undermined because it wants to take measures to prevent ILLEGAL immigration.
Illegal immigration is rampant because it helps corporate America.
If it didn't help corporate America it would be rare.
I agree with your comments about illegal American involvement in other nations.
The 2 wars we are currently engaged in are glaring examples.
I haven't been unable to stop them it turns out.
I write letters to the editor, I write letters to politicians.
But my number 1 issue is the preservation of the environment.
Surprisingly, that takes me down some non-liberal paths from time to time.
You could not be more mistaken about my feelings regarding corporate America.
The supposed 2 party system is just a circus, with enough squabbling between the 2 sides to distract people from noticing that the real culprit is corporations.
Do you think Conservatives are happy now?
I don't.
Do you think Liberals are happy now?
I don't.
Do you think corporations are getting their way on every single issue straight down to rampant illegal immigration?
I do.
