Could US Officials Please Treat a Nobel Peace Laureate with Respect?
Less than a month ago, in late July, 2009, Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire was travelling from Dublin, Ireland to Albuquerque, New Mexico to meet Peace Laureate Jody Williams to participate in peace events there. As she arrived at Dulles airport near Washington, DC, from Ireland on July 30, 2009, she passed through the regular immigration line, but then was detained in a special processing area over two hours causing her to miss her connecting flight to Albuquerque.
This is the second time Maguire has been detained by US Immigration in the past three months. On May 14, 2009, she was detained at the Houston, Texas, International Airport as she was returning from a 3 day conference in Guatemala, hosted by four of Nobel Peace Women Laureates. During the detention in Houston, Immigration officers questioned her about her visit in April, 2007, to the Palestinian village of Bil'in where she was injured by a rubber-coated bullet shot by Israeli military forces during a protest at the fence built by the Israelis in the village.
In Houston, Maguire asked the Immigration officials what she could do to prevent future detention and was told to get a 10 year visa to the United States.
She immediately applied and obtained a 10 year visa in early July from US Consul in Belfast, Ireland. She presented that visa to the Dulles Airport Immigration official. Maguire had had an indefinite visa to the U.S. in a previous passport and had never had any problems travelling to or through the United States.
Three months later, when she told the U.S. Immigration Officer at Dulles airport that she was a Nobel Peace Laureate and showed him the documents concerning the Peace Laureate meeting she was attending in New Mexico, the Immigration Officer sarcastically said that detention "is going to happen every time you enter the United States," and "you should get used to it."
Maguire has been publicly outspoken and critical about Israeli treatment of Palestinians and has a long history of non-violent acts of civil disobedience against war and against nuclear weapons.
Not only was Maguire hit in 2007 by an Israeli military rubber-coated bullet and tear-gassed while participating in a protest against the construction of the Israeli fence dividing the Palestinian village of Bil'in, on June 30, 2009, the boat that Maguire and nineteen others were on in international waters off Gaza was boarded by Israeli military and all the passengers and crew were put in an Israeli prison for 7 days. Maguire was deported from Israel on July 7, as was fellow passenger, former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney.
Earlier, in 2004, as a part of her work against nuclear weapons, she travelled to Israel to meet Mordechai Vanunu as he left prison at the end of his 18 year sentence imposed for his revealing Israel's nuclear program.
Because of her detention by U.S. Immigration on July 30, 2009, Maguire had to stay overnight in Washington, DC, at her own expense, as United Airlines said they were not responsible for her missing her flight. The next day, she ended up on a flight to New Mexico with 3 stops before getting to Albuquerque at 4pm, missing all the day's events.
Maguire said that the harassment by U.S. Immigration began in 2009, after the change in U.S. Presidential administrations.
I wonder if the Secretary of State might wish to have discussions with the Secretary of Director of Immigration and Citizenship about how to treat Nobel Peace Laureates, unless, because of her outspoken criticism of Israeli policies toward the Palestinians, the treatment Maguire got on July 30, 2009 was exactly what the Obama administration wants her to have.

Any war state regards genuine peace advocates, especially influential ones, as virtual enemy combatants. If your business is war/conflict/weapons, then those who rally souls towards peace initiatives prove the greatest of threats.
We have arrived at the cusp of ages, a phase where those beliefs that formed the foundation of "civilization" are breaking down. It's as if the ground has shifted so profoundly underneath these support beams, that the structure no longer has any viable basis for being held up. So armies are appointed to hold minds to the previous status quo by fabricating complex, contradictory illusions, while a dazzling and expensive display of armed warriors are put in place to make sure that those who see the folly and own the intellectual means to inspire citizens to build new edifices, are either shot, arrested, maligned, silenced, or exiled. This is not a new dance; however, the weapons have gotten bigger and more vicious.
There is a growing chasm between those religious beliefs that have built the pillars of current ideological edifices, and the new awareness crashing into them. Here in Puerto Rico I am meeting highly intellectual types who are radically questioning the dictates of their once cherished Catholicism. For all the abounding darkness of our times, so many persons are "lit" on the inside, that it is THEIR light in composite that is shining through the detritus as the walls of effete belief structures come crashing down.
There may be many who can see through the deceptions perpetrated by the Imperial Guard, but there are many others who are so submerged in poverty and suffering that they remain empty, dark, and depressed, unaware of the choices they could make and fight for. I am thinking of the piece on Truthout, published today, that talks of the voiceless pain of those who have no health insurance. They do not demonstrate against the status quo, write letters, or march on Washington. They only push forward, too preoccupied and too hopeless to insist on change. Is that the way it is for peace, too? Are those at the bottom too shellshocked to say 'no' to the threadbare platitudes of the warrior class? I am afraid so.
Nativetongue: "effete belief structures?--I wondered about that one too.
Well given effete likley means "decadent" given the context.
An effete belief structure would seem to me to mean our self indulgence and rampant Consumerism while measuring our "self worth" and the WORTH of others, through how many THINGS we own.
As in Americans are WEALTHIER then persons in Mexico in the way of material goods, therefore see themselves as more VALUABLE and superior.
Thus bankers and the already well off are WORTH more then the millions of people who have lost their jobs so any bailout should go to the same bankers. The Government of the United States of America values the bankers more.
Effete: "No longer capable of producing; spent and sterile". I think that's the way Sioux Rose was using it.
Arry (Effete intellectual snob/nattering nabob of negativism)
Eloquent post, Sioux Rose. Especially the second paragraph.
Sioux Rose
CLOVIS: Thank you.
NATIVE TONGUE: As per "effete belief systems" it was a metaphor for ideas that have held minds hostage to circumstances that work against their own interests, nor are these ideas mindless. They are the planned product of a consumer culture driven by war, aggression, and acts of empire.
I cannot elaborate further as my 4 year old Grandson is in my care today. This amazing child is one reason why I remain involved with the Great Work: that of helping enough minds to rise above the detritus of these disastrous belief systems, so as to summon a force that lends shape and form to what IS next.
By the statements of the immigration officer, it is obvious that immigration officials are attempting to intimidate and harass Ms. Maguire all because of her audacity in speaking out against Israeli aggression aimed at the Palestinian people. How is Obama's regime any different than that of Bush and Cheney? Was Obama not elected because he was considered to be an agent of hope and change? Apparently that hope is not extended to the Palestinians who surely recognize that they will continue to feel the yoke of oppression under Obama just as they did under the neoconservatives.
The motto of the Obama presidency would seem to be more of the status quo [more insurance companies in America's health care plans, more bombing of third world countries and support of oppressive regimes such as Israel, more support of the Patriot Act and torture, etc.]. Not exactly change that one can believe in.
Damn Erroll....we agree. Is it a trend? (lol)
There was a little noticed story last week about human trafficking in Kansas City. Turns out that the people running the ring, which was described as organized crime, were from Uzbekistan. Too bad Homeland Security and Immigration and all the intelligence agencies and all the pork pie we're paying for to "keep us safe" are too busy harassing those who speak their conscience to prevent organized crime from running an operation like this since 2001.
Excellent point. This is happening far too much. But those that protect their immoral and illegal acts are powerful and have fools that buy their spiel.
I am going to google for this as I heard nothing of this and I follow human trafficking stories closely. Of course that's probably because a local story in human trafficking kinds of issues here broke last week with the FBI overrunning our small town to investigate a campground-owning alleged child pornographer. Was it one of the
"one-hit wonder" news stories, pulled after 1 cycle on CNN? SIGH.
Please post any links in meantime, thanks.
Here you go. I just grabbed a quick google result with the basic story:
http://www.startribune.com/business/53356162.html
Most of the google returns are the same. It takes some digging to find out anything more.
Re: the one-hit wonder. I never even saw a television story. All I saw was a mention on a ticker.
Obama is Rahm "Irgun" Emmanuels puppet.
One does wonder who really is setting policy, with Biden giving "green lights", and US and Israeli military advisors in Georgia. Recent events have even been described as a Biden/Clinton mutiny.
Its obvious the US government will remain thoroughly infiltrated by radical zionist agents for some time.
I remember when the 'current' war began the US denied entry to Cat Stevens, onetime international music star, now converted to Islam. No doubt the government feared his possible voice and idealism - US freedoms? US idealism?
Ah, yes, and the Dixie Chicks -
After the Canadian citizen Maher Arar was sent abroad to be tortured, eventually cleared of any connection to terrorism, awarded monetary compensation and a governmental apology by the Candadian government - the US would not allow him to enter the country on a speaking tour - US freedoms? US idealism?
And, of course, the situation with McGuire - and you already know the answer - a continuing diminution of US freedoms and a mockery of US idealism.
All are the result of a government gone mad, paranoid that its inhumanity, lies, deceptions and actual motives and actions will be revealed by those with knowledge and experience. These are the actions of a criminal government - a government now controlling the US. The CIA has been held to no accountability for its vast number of crimes; those that initiated an illegal war based on a vast panoply of fabrications still live freely and in luxury; a government that still supports terrorist regimes while sheepishly and lyingly singing the song of democracy and freedom; a government that continues to build a military capable of controlling the world - now with robots (remember the world's reaction to the V-1 and V-2s of Hitler?); a government of ruling elites financed by the great corporate entities that feed the masses emotionalism, lies, and propaganda to keep them in a constant state of ignorance, paranoia and agitation. This is the state of America today - seen by many, if not most throughout the world. This is not the beginning of fascism - we are well beyond that . . . .
Sioux Rose, as always, has described one of the many reasons this society has lost whatever moral underpinnings it once marginally had. The US government is now a soul-less predator, undergirded by only its greed, its false sense of superiority, mostly generated by a intellectual prostitution of Christianity, and a willingness to kill any human being who dares oppose its aims.
The continued rise of the corporate state, its control of the government itself, the rising hatred of a minority of its citizens too ignorant to see beyond the Sunday footgames and NASCAR hero worship - these are the societal elements every dictatorship prays for - AND THEY ARE HERE, NOW.
All and all of the large so called humanitarian agencies such as the Nobel Committee, Nobel laureates, Red Cross, Amnesty international, Oxfam, Human Right Watch, Doctors Without Borders(http://africannewsanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/02/frances-kouchner-mixed-business.html), 3rd world missionaries and NGOs, etc are all recruits and apostles of empire with slightly different window dressings. Most of these so called Universalist entities are funded by large capitalist corporations and endorsed by stake holders in the status quo. Invariably some individuals in these organizations start of with fair motives but soon become hopelessly entangled in "the project". For starters check out Frances Stonor Saunders' "The cultural Cold War "-the CIA and the World of Arts and Letters.
Often times through techniques of "limited hangout" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_hangout), whereby a deployed tactic plays just the opposite strategic role.
And genuine peace advocates, who are also leaders, do not live long. There is too much profit in war. The bankers who run the world have counted on this as their #1 revenue center. Therefore, the current, nearly universal mindset, or desensitization from a normal aversion to suffering, which has embraced modern warfare as normal, is doomed to degrade all life in the same manner. Humankind, as spectators to the cruelty dished out by other humans. Makes me wonder why we developed a brain, at all. We really have nothing over the monkeys, except our ability to destroy.
Macquire should be given an official apology for her inconvenience, reimbursed for all expenses incurred during her delay, and awarded damages to be paid by the person who put her on that list. The U.S. is a rogue nation and should be treated that way. The U.S. no longer respects anything. Not the rule of law, not international treaties, not human rights, not even life itself. The behavior of U.S. politicians and representatives is deplorable, disgusting and undoubtedly doomed. While not a conspiracy theorist, I still find it very hard not to intellectually ponder the many and growing number of claims of zionist idealogues occupying U.S. government positions. The list is long, as well as scary. I don't see any problem philosophically in getting rid of each and every one of them from any positions of persuasion for the rest of their lives. Sorry, I just feel that it is time for a true change. We are willing to go to war and kill innocent civilians preemptively. This would be mild in comparison. People like Doug Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, Eliot Abrams, Richard Pearle, Michael Chertoff.... must go. Anywhere, but most importantly away from any position of power. They have failed us and are leading us to the likes of hell. I believe that Obama is bought and sold by the Israel lobby. I've looked long and hard and can't see it another way. Time to cut the ties to Israel and find some real friends.

An interesting headline in one of today's papers: Goldman-Sachs now says much of the scrutiny devoted to its financial schemes is due to anti-Semitism . . . . Fails to mention the frauds and political and economic manipulations perpetrated by it . Forever the victim. . .
Don't apologize for your observations Wayout - the individuals you mentioned have a long history of intrigue, criminal behavior, and moral malfeasance. I would certainly want to add Kissinger to your list.
Modern Jewry has its bigots, its Hitlers, and its victims - just like all societies. And the ruling regime in present day Israel, just like the US, is driven by a clique that cares nothing for humanity in general, has no redeeming qualities, and is ultimately disdainful and vengeful against any and all who might threaten its supremacy. There is such a concept as national security - but it should not, by its nature, both sanction and legitimize the servitude and possible destruction of all others on the planet.
Thanks,
Kissinger would top the list.
Different day, same policy results. Our government has been commandeered.
FTA: "Maguire said that the harassment by U.S. Immigration began in 2009, after the change in U.S. Presidential administrations."
Change I can believe in.
To this article and these comments might be added the question: What "respect" has the Obama administration shown to anyone critical of its foreign policy? It wasn't exactly respect when Cynthia McKinney (whom it might be considered would have been shown some respect for having been the Green Party's nominee in the 08 election) was denied the least interest of the State Department in one its "citizens" when she (along with Maguire and about 20 other peace activists) were kidnapped and jailed in Israel when they undertook a humanitarian mission to Gaza. Ireland at least made diplomatic protests in Maguire's favor, but nothing like this was forthcoming from the U.S.of A.
And the mainstream media follows in lockstep with US policy: Virtual no mention of the an ex-Congresswoman and presidential candidate being kidnapped by Israelis and jailed; virtual no mention of a Nobel Peace Laureate being detained by the US. Common link: in both cases, they took action against US policy.
On the other hand, MSM media has no problem reporting on the Iranian detention of two unknown US hikers illegally entering Iran, or the North Korean detention of an journalist illegally entering North Korea. In these cases, the MSM treats the foreign governments as the criminals, not the persons who illegally entered those countries.
I hate to tell you this but the US administration has always had double standards -the same as every government only a good deal stronger.
"the MSM treats the foreign governments as the criminals, not the persons who illegally entered those countries."
Well, sure, since the illegal incomers were no doubt in the pay of the CIA. Why else would they go there illegally?
"...no mention of the an ex-Congresswoman and presidential candidate being kidnapped by Israelis and jailed..."
Kidnapped? The newspeak word is "renditioned".
It's 2009 in America. If you're not paranoid, you have no grasp of the facts.
I should have gotten over the personal shame I feel for this this and many other much worse events, done by my nation, but I never have. At least, before November-December, 2000, there was a feeling that at least incremental progress was still possible. No longer.
I never asked to be born here. God fuck Amerika.
pjd, Agreed. And what makes it more painful, is that I actually bought that crap about being born in the most blessed nation first. From the highest peaks to know the lowest lows, how the mighty have fallen.
Does anyone remember when Obama said he would get control of the national security beauracracy? I don't.
That would have been early Wednesday, Nov 5, 2008, and in private, no?
Why don’t we hear the very loud protests from co-laureates Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Nelson Mandela, the 14th Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachov, and Desmond Tutu?
Among these the following have never had troubles entering the United States or being received with great hoopla by a US President: Nelson Mandela, the 14th Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachov, and Desmond Tutu. Why?
You get a grade of A-plus for two correct answers.
Nothing has changed the pigs are still running the show--they are just a different color pig.
What a pity that society affords Ms. Wright no better accolade with which to establish Malread McGuire's credentials than the Nobel Laureate shared with the likes of Gore and Kissinger.
More on Vanunu and The "Big Get" Don Hewitt and "60 Minutes" Didn't Get
The creator and producer of "60 Minutes" Don Hewitt, died at 86 on August 20, 2009.
In 2001, he wrote: "The formula is simple and it's reduced to four words every kid in the world knows: Tell me a story. It's that easy."
"Back in the days when television was in black and white, Don Hewitt was creating and producing the world's first taste of 'news at the dinner hour'…Big event television news? Hewitt birthed it. The anchor on location for the big story? Hewitt birthed that too.
"And then there was the 'big get.' Hewitt pioneered that too. Or at least the concept.
"Almost all of what is being said and written today is in the kinds of generalities minus specifics that Don as a preeminent producer would have hated. Where are the facts he would have asked? Where are the guts of it he would have demanded." [1]
In 2006, I mailed Mr. Hewitt a DVD copy of my "30 Minutes with Vanunu" taped just weeks after his FREEDOM OF SPEECH Trial began:
See it here:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8079102468952529881&q
I never received a reply from Mr. Hewitt.
I also will never stop telling the story of the first FREEDOM of SPEECH Trial in the 'democracy' of Israel until Mordechai Vanunu is free to leave the Jewish state.
On March 26, 2006, the Whistler Blower of Israel's WMD Program, Vanunu told me:
“Many journalists come here to the American Colony, from CNN and NY Times. They all want to cover my story, but their EDITORS say no...CNN wants to interview me; but they say they can't do it because they don't want problems with the Israeli censor. BBC is doing the same thing.
"Sixty Minutes from the United States from the beginning they wanted to do a program, but because of the censor situation they decide not to do it. Also big media from Germany, France, Italy, Japan. None of them wants problems with the Israelis."
On January 25, 2006, Vanunu was convicted by the Jerusalem Magistrates Court of 15 violations of a military order that prohibited him from talking to non-Israelis and because he supposedly attempted to leave Israel by taking a cab to go from Jerusalem to Bethlehem to attend Christmas Eve mass at the Church of the Nativity in 2004.
The original indictment included 22 different violations; Vanunu was charged with 19 and acquitted of four. He was acquitted of speaking to foreign nationals on the internet and via video and voice chats.
On July 2, 2007, Israel sentenced Vanunu to six more months in jail for speaking to foreigners-who happened to be media-in 2004.
On September 23, 2008, the Jerusalem District Court reduced Vanunu’s sentence to three months, "In light of (Vanunu’s) ailing health and the absence of claims that his actions put the country’s security in jeopardy."
On June 14, 2009 Mordechai Vanunu told me, “The Central Commander of the General Army testified in court that it is OK if I speak in public as long as I do not talk about nuclear weapons.”
On July 6, 2009, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish continued to deny Vanunu the right to leave the Jewish State, claiming his "case is still generating great interest, like any other security-related case. The media's attention he gets is proof of that."

As a civilized human being I avoid the USA at all costs. It's advise all human beings should bear in mind.
Hollow-State authoritarian regimes are barbaric, not civilized, in nature. The brutality committed in the shadows, and the misanthropy showcased by war crimes and atrocities committed openly, are reflected in an overall coarsening and superciliousness of government authorities.
Courteous and respectful treatment of foreign visitors cannot survive in an organizational culture of paranoid xenophobia and aggressive exceptionalism.
In a way, it's the tragic flip side of the Mexican bandits who identify themselves as "Federales" in the classic Bogart film, "Treasure of the Sierra Madre". The bandit leader, when asked to show their badges, sneers, "We don't need no steenkin' badges!"
Ms. Maguire is only the latest of a host of deplorable discourtesy and abuse visited upon respectable foreign persons coming to the US for professional or academic reasons. In a phrase, they don't care about her steenkin' Nobel Prize.
But it isn't just the thuggish state security goons and apparatchiks who carry the bully's swagger into traditionally tolerant precincts.
Consider Columbia president Lee Bollinger's supercilious and acerbic remarks to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an invited guest.
Bollinger's act was shabby, reprehensible, and shameless. The US officials are shameless too. They seem immune to being embarrassed into mending their bumptious ways.

"Could US Officials Please Treat a Nobel Peace Laureate with Respect?"
Of course not. It's 2009 in America.
Candle bearers are not welcome in this chasm of gathering darkness.
Good old USA! Sure she can get respect but only if she denies the truth and kisses up to Israel. All because we are a free nation, free to look the other way while suffering goes on and on. I am disapointed with Obama who apparently lost his humanity and honesty when he got crowned.
US immigration detaining Noble Prize holders is like chimps throwing feces at humans....

I take no pride in being an American in these times. It is embarrassing to travel abroad and be confronted with the question, "Where do you come from?"
It is necessary for ALL relatively senior American politicians to support any and all Israeli actions that the Zionists desire. American politicians from Truman, who organized the manipulation of the UN vote that create the so called 'legal' Israel to BO today, will be marginalized and/or defeated if they speak out about Israeli injustice.
This will continue as long as Americans succumb to the manipulation by their mainstream media and government.
It would be nice to think that the web could foster a new era of truth and justice but the selfish forces have many cards up their sleeves.
