Protecting The Vote: Live From Main Street Columbus
Voter registration deadlines are just over a week away in many states. Polls open in just over a month. In an election that could well be decided by new voters, voter registration efforts are in overdrive. But signing people up might be the easy part: after that, there's voting. As the last two elections have shown, just showing up at the polls isn't a guarantee of a smooth ride to the ballot box.
In 2000 and 2004, all across the country, thousands of voters were removed from the rolls, without their knowledge, in official purges of voter lists. On Election Day in 2004, boxes of registrations remained unprocessed in at least two cities we know about -- Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio. On the radio that election night, I received calls from Columbus voters who had stood for hours in line because of a shortage of voting machines in the inner city, even as, in nearby wealthy suburbs, voters were able to cast their votes in a matter of minutes. As one caller put it, "Jim Crow isn't dead."
Election protection and voting rights should be central to any conversation about the '08 vote. But a lot of tough questions are getting lost in horse-race coverage. And many voters are wondering -- again -- if their vote will be counted. In contrast to most advanced democracies, the right to vote isn't conveyed automatically with citizenship or coming of age in the United States. Voters have to prove themselves and there are no end to the challenges, from felon disenfranchisement laws to monolingual ballots and a myriad of ever-changing rules which differ from election to election and district to district. Come voting day, voters rely on minimally-trained poll-workers overseeing a myriad of voting systems. Disturbing doubts remain about the security of electronic voting and the privately-owned technology many districts rely on to tally votes.
Fed up with waiting for officials or Parties to do the work, this year, as never before, citizens' groups, and voting rights organizations are taking early action to protect the vote. A few months back, national voting rights groups charged officials in Kansas, Michigan and Louisiana of illegally purging voter lists. Voters whose homes are in foreclosure are also concerned that their status might be used at the precinct to challenge their right to vote. The states with the highest foreclosure rates, Ohio, Michigan, Florida and Colorado, are also swing states where the election could hinge on tiny margins. Meanwhile, in Michigan, the ACLU has just filed a federal lawsuit against state electoral officials over statewide voter purge programs they claim would "disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Michigan voters" -- many of them college students. Thanks to independent reporting and activist organizing, the Department of Veterans Affairs was recently forced to reverse its policy that would have stopped voter registration drives at hundreds of VA hospitals serving injured and homeless vets.
While the media focus on the candidates, voting rights advocates are focusing on the future of our democracy. It's falling to nonprofit outfits like the Advancement Project to distribute state-specific "know the facts" palm cards to poll workers in many states. And organizers are fanning out. Twenty-three states allow early voting. Ohio has a "golden week" -- September 30 to October 6 -- in which people can register and vote all in the same day. The organizers recommend voting early. Avoid the lines and the worst of the chaos.
Will citizen activism decide an election? It just might.

Show AllWe definitely need to automatically give citizens the right to vote when they turn 18 or become citizens. To have to go through so much bullshit first to register, then to vote only to find out they've been disenfranchised..the people who perpetuate this system of voter suppression are traitors, plain and simple.
Well some progress is being made; in Florida they are now registering thousands of Felons which at one time had lost the right to vote! Considering the global impact of these elections I really don't understand why we limit the vote to citizens of the U.S.
Thats the funniest thing I've read this year, thanks.
Imagine millions of Chinese, Indians (India), Russians, Pakistanis, Iraqis.... flooding our shores to vote in our elections if they were open to non-citizens as well. Before you argue about time constraints (30 day residency in the precinct... or whatever) know that these governments would have planned for something like that if we gave the right to vote to non-citizens. (Some municipalities do though allow non-citizens to vote in local elections only, however.) If such were the case for national elections, you can bet our foreign policy would be a little better, but the control that the US citizens had over our government/country would be nonexistent, not that we have much control now. (Is impeachment still off the table...?)
We also need to resolve this problem of moving to another district. It's simple: make it part of the change of address to your post office! Voter suppression MUST be stopped, even if it does help Democrats!
Protecting "The Party": Dead from Wall Street
I am an election reporter who has covered US presidential elections for 20 years and I have looked at the electoral college for the past several years and watched as Republicans manipulated Ohio and Florida ... It is serious. It is fraud.
And they are consistently getting away with it, because the US American people don't care enough in the 24 hours after election day to WITHSTAND the pressure of corporate media and REFUSE to accept results until they are investigated.
This week the Gallup National Poll has Obama up by 8pts. and everyone is so excited and happy on all these sites I am reading. THIS IS FOOLISH NONSENSE.
OBAMA CAN WIN THE POPULAR VOTE AND LOSE THE ELECTION EASILY - just like GORE!
The key to this entire election lies in the 17 electoral college votes of Michigan, in the 20 of Ohio, the 21 of Pennsylvania and those of North Carolina and Virginia.
These 5 states are key.
1. in Ohio a new Secretary of State, Brunner, is looking MUCH better than the previous and things look harder to steal on her watch.
2. Pennsylvania is swinging heavily to Obama since Palin.
3. NC and Virginia are tossups because the Repubs are so bad this time.
SO:
If McCain takes OH and NC and Obama takes PA and Virginia the difference will be 16 electoral college votes! MI has 17!
THUS:
4. MICHIGAN IS WHERE I SENSE THE STEAL IS GOING TO HAPPEN !!!
This is where GM is, and Dresser corporation formerly Halliburton subsidiary, right? This is the people who finagled Hoekstra in and all of Cheney's friends!
They are already trying to illegally eliminate any voter who has been foreclosed on!
ELECTRONIC VOTING FRAUD IS THE NEXT THING TO OBSERVE CLOSELY!!!!!
be aware:
1. machines flipping in the middle of the night.
2. "jumping screens"
3. resistance by locals to let people vote
4. voter intimidation, harassment, suppression
these are all going to be actively going on in Michigan which could decide the election!
MTK
One way to guarantee voting rights is to pass a constitutional amendment that includes the following:
Automatic voter registration of all American citizens at age 18.
No American citizen maybe disenfranchised for any reason, including convictions.
Better still, make it mandatory like Australia.
Do they enforce it?
I haven't read the article, but given it's about protecting U.S. voting rights of or for citizens, the following is certainly related, as well as important.
"RFK Jr., : "Is Your Vote Safe?"
Interview with Mike Papantonio, Air America Radio
by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Global Research, September 29, 2008
Truthout - 2008-09-22"

EXCERPT:
Bobby: "There are about 30 scams the Republicans are deliberately using, particularly in the swing states to get Democratic voters off the rolls. These scams originate in the so-called Help America Vote Act which was passed after the Florida debacle in the year 2000. It was originally suggested by Democrats and Republicans but it was passed by a Republican congress with a Republican senate and a Republican president. And instead of reforming what happened in Florida it basically institutionalized all the problems that happened in Florida. And institutionalized a series of impediments that make it very difficult for Democrats to register, for Democrats to vote and then for Democrats to have their vote counted.
END EXCERPT.
If you haven't yet read this interview, which is not long, then you definitely need to read this. The rest is very important; or it definitely seems to be anyway. And it's evidently very [unknown] information of very (if not stronger) and urgently critical kind for voters.
It makes people who say that the Bush-Cheney cabal are establishing or already have established (very recently) [martial law] in the U.S. seem only more credible; after the cabal returned U.S. military forces from Iraq in order to patrol, ... the USA itself and about which Glenn Greenwald had a recent piece at CD and more can be learned at, f.e., www.globalresearch.ca. I haven't read those articles yet, but did get to learn that U.S. forces are or have been returned and for patrolling, ... the streets and citizens of the continental USA.
So what's planned for next months "October Surprise"? After all, one or more U.S. military officials were quoted saying that the U.S. military forces returned to the U.S. is for helping to ensure security against terrorist attacks, and surely foreign terrorists independent of the U.S. govt and its real ruling elites aren't planning any attacks before the Nov 4th eelctions. Hence, ... what's the U.S. govt up to doing, to again terrorise its citizens?
'Global War on Terrorism', there are a couple of points about that and which have come to mind:
a) I've said that what's really been going on with the Bush-Cheney cabal and the U.S. wars of aggression commanded by this cabal is another [world war], and what does 'global war' mean if not 'world war'?!
b) 'War on Terrorism' is bogus bs; for it really is, 'War [OF] Terrorism' that the Bush-Cheney cabal et alia have been commanding and carrying out, or certainly trying anyway. And part of this GW[of]T is terrorising the citizens and residents of the continental USA. Well, and ... read the interview with RFK Jr for more terror!
In Australia it is mandatory to vote - once you have registered! Yes, you do have to go through this rigmarole, but once you're in, you are in and have to vote, no matter what. If you don't vote, you'll be fined.
Once we were away for three months: holidaying in Niue (small island in the Pacific Ocean), Tonga and New Caledonia and forgot about the whole voting. Usually we do vote, but this time it just slipped our minds.
When we did remember (upon seeing the results and the grinning little Johnny Howard and the truly un-photogenic family of his) - it was too late.
We did receive a fine of AUD50.00/person.
We did pay it within two weeks and felt sorry for three years for not voting
