Occupy Our Homes Action in New York City Enters Second Month
photo: Brennan CavanaughIn New York City, an occupation of a vacant home has entered its second month. Community organizations, church groups and Occupy Wall Street protesters took over the property on December 6 during an Occupy Our Homes action to reclaim foreclosed homes from bailed-out banks. The home is located in Brooklyn’s East New York neighborhood, which is marked with high rates of foreclosures and abandoned property. Alfredo Carrasquillo says he hopes to inspire similar actions across the country.
Alfredo Carrasquillo: "When I was going through the shelter with my kids and their mother, and we decided we didn’t want to go through that no more, and that’s why I wounded up couch hopping — because I didn’t want to go through that experience anymore, and I didn’t want my kids to have to go through that experience anymore. I came to this point where I jumped on this opportunity and I wanted to make it a national movement to help all the families that are homeless and dealing with the situation I had to deal with. The next steps are to move in more families hopefully do a large movement of multiple families into homes which is the potential next step we are working towards."

It will give you a perspective on how the spring will likely play out.
And with the signing of NDAA, look for 2013 to be even worse.
Occupy Our Homes would be well advised to consult with squatting activists from Europe. The squatters have been at this for a long time and could probably provide some much needed advice.
While Occupying empty homes is good the greater statement and benefit would be to Occupy before and prevent the foreclosure from being enforced.
This kind of action has already happened in Latin America. How true Martin Luther King Jr's words were when he spoke of "Western arrogance of seeing that it has everything to teach the Third World but nothing to learn from it." Dr King was so right. We must learn from others and then do better ourselves for all.
Surely those engaged in such acts of civl disobedience should get legal advice to deal with what the corrupt types in power might do.
Ask the dispossessed of New Orleans after Katrina, when the banks stole their paid off and mortgage free homes and property literally at gunpoint, under the laws of 'Eminent Domain', arguing that the homes had been abandoned.
