NY Police Using LRAD Sound Cannons Against Protesters
Demonstrators are reporting the NYPD's use of Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs) against protesters during today's Occupy Wall Street "Day of Action." The machines are meant to send out "high intensity" noise over large areas, and "allow for near instantaneous escalation across the force protection spectrum," according to the official product overview. Twitter user Joshua Paul snapped the accompanying photo, which seems to match the LRAD 100X model, and writes: "High pitched noise. Natural reaction: My face scrunched and hands started moving to my ears. Length was around 5 seconds." The OWS Twitter jokes, "Didn't we get evicted for our drums being too loud or something?"

One of us alone isn't worth a flamming fart
but two of us can become millions
saying, "We're tired of the bullshit!
this land belongs us, the people.
no power elite and no coporation"
(a take off on http://www.peteseeger.net/onemanhand.htm Pete's song)
We shall overcome.
Try a massive Om response to the sound cannons. Get on the same note and join together to overwhelm the blast with the sacred sound.
Wow, that is a GREAT IDEA!!! Instead of being a deterrent, it can actually become an uplift!!!!
Very good idea. Wouldn't it be really cool if the human voice could produce the sound wave that's resonance cancelled out the LRAD?
At one point, the reporter says, "This doesn't feel like New York City, it feels like a heavily militarized war zone." Later, she says, "Who knew that stepping off the curb would be enough to get you slammed to the ground and then a boot stepping on your neck, scenes which we have filmed."
Go on.
Tell me you're actually surprised.
I am surprised, and I was eighteen when Kent State happened. I thought we had learned a valuable lesson. But I realized when the May Day 2008 protesters were fired on and the public was not outraged that it depended on who was being shot. I am still incredibly shocked by the state of my nation and society.
I had just finished grad school in Madison when Kent State happened. Like you, I believed a valuable lesson had been learned. Who knew that the power elite had also learned a lesson and would use that knowledge to further mislead and manipulate the people. When we lost the equal time provision and the right wing took over the media, there began a sea change. Now I don't even recognize the country anymore. It seems to have become a nascent Fourth Reich.
Bloomberg is the railroad baron who wants to stop the 99%. Comm. ray kelly is deke thornton who has to use the gutter trash to do the job. The gutter trash kelly uses are plants, fbi and probably cia coverts to create the mayham, violence and destruction so it appears the 99% are doing it.
Sam Peckinpah certainly created a gem when he directed the 'Wild Bunch' which was a reality from the late 1800s when the railroads got a court decision to make their corporations into humans. Bloomberg is that goddamn railroad baron and he even gets judges to make decisions bloomberg pays him/them to make.
Right on Samo. Corporations have spent a fortune and over a hundred years solidifying their position as living, breathing, never-dying human beings. And now that they own the presidency, most in Congress and five members of the Supreme Court, they are going for the jugular vein of citizen sovereignty in this country. While having all the privileges of humans, they share none of the responsibilities or consequences for their actions. As one protest sign said, "Ill believe corporations are people when Texas executes one." I'd settle for their board of directors but i don't think it's going to happen. With corporations regarded by the law as human beings, the only role for the 99% is one of slavery. This is my main reason for supporting OWS.
This is starting to look like Waco.
"I got pepper-sprayed because we were penned in by the motor—by the bicycle groups, until there was no way out. And the minute the people had us penned so tightly that we could barely move, they started letting loose with the pepper spray. And it was not just a few people that were targeted. When you look at the pictures, you will see that the pepper spray fog and the stream of pepper spray is all over.
My problem is not only with police brutality, it is with the progressive getting worse attitude of the police. I was tear-gassed—and thank you, Norm Stamper—in Seattle when the WTO was there in Seattle. And I also was in a workshop with Arundhati Roy when she was in Seattle for the WTO. These locations, while they were pretty violent outside, were not nearly as bad as what we see now. It is getting progressively worse. Our freedoms are getting curtailed. And I just listened to the press being banned at Wall Street—this in a country where we export our sort of democracy all over the world at gunpoint.
And what we have to do is change the mindset of people that guns will not solve our crisis. The President going to Australia to introduce troops into Australia, I fear for Australians, because, sooner or later, they will be occupied like our troops are occupying practically half of the world. Once the troops get there, there’s no getting them out."-- Dorli Rainey
that's an excerpt from today's transcript of democracy now!
i hope someone recorded the sound cannon incident
p.s. another guest, an ows organizer said "no occupy subway system plans"--just a rumor..
Our president o is out of the country so he doesn't have to make any decisions yet, like calling out the army, marines and the special forces which may leave him to courageously start using drones on these domestic terrorists. You can bet on that happening, designating the protestors as domestic terrorists not long after he gets back. What a bum for a president, but I knew that back before the 2008 election.
America is starting to crumble a lot and our president can't be bothered with that.
Dorli was on with Keith Olbermann last night...extraordinary woman and great interview
Diana,
Make you "feel good" right?
Made me feel hopeful...she's fought long and hard and still remains determined, so I was inspired
Diana,
Obama's speeches made millions of Americans so hopeful and inspired during 2008. We are not blue state, red states, but red, blue and white. I will not have any hobbyists, I will be transparence, I will withdrew our troops, I will close Gitmo.... blah, blah remember? Made you feel so good and inspired? By god when will you wake up and.....
Are we better off than in 2008? Don't bame it on the Retug, it's Obama and the Democrats. "It's the economy stupid" say blubber. No not the economy, it's the PIGS!
I didn't understand your first comment and I don't understand this one. You're trashing me for standing up for obama and the dems?! About 180 degrees from what I've ever written on CD and certainly not implied in my comment about Dorli Rainey. I was simply commenting on her amazing career as an activist. Listen to her interview...she's a true heroine, an example of dedicated resistance against the MIC.
[I just happened to respond to a comment of yours on another thread. Agreed with your comment but added my thoughts...gonna misinterpret that one too?!]
Diana,
My apologies. Please don't get upset.
My first replied was to lures you into a trap. I thought you are another Obamapoligist. I think you understand the "good feeling" stuff. During the 2008 primary, Chris Matthews, Olbermann, Rachel Maddog and the rest of MSNBC, make me sick. They gave us Obama. I have given up on TV. Anyway I don't own a TV now. Lost everything and now living...... You too should un subscribe Freepress.net like I did. I. "gonna misinterpret that one too?" No. No. NO, well said. I just went over to take a look. Thanks
There are many intelligent posters here straight to the point. I like them. Very sorry again:-)
No problem, sivasm...apology accepted.
And of course I agree with you about the MSM (except for Olbermann). Where the press was once a vigorous and vital part of democracy, it is now toxic to it. As Goebbels knew, good propaganda is invaluable in brainwashing an electorate into believing ...well...pretty much anything.
What's next -- white phosphorus?
White phosphorous? Sure, why not? The fascist crackdown is beginning. The ruling elite are scared shitless.
People saw truly representative, non-discriminatory public assemblies, unsupervised by corporations, with no officially-appoitned gatekeepers to keep them in line -- and that's what terrified the overlords into these actions. If people can experience real democracy instead of sham democracy, who's going to show up at the 'voting booths' anymore?
True, but we have to keep in mind that power cedes nothing. This will get uglier and more violence will be used by the state. Guaranteed. The veil is falling off the illusion of law and order and justice. We are in a proto-fascist state, with full-blown fascism soon to follow. It's inevitable before societies come to an end. Always happens this way. The greed, the corruption, the use of deadly force against citizens - all happened before. Just following the scripts.
The people are pissed, but the state is strong and it will scare the people. The American people are vulnerable because we have been acculturated to having it easy and clean and fast. We are coming to the wall where the truth lies and we are going to slam into it - hard.
What is important is for us to realize that as long as we work and shop and pay taxes, we support the fascist system. We must learn a new way. We must create a new "soft" economy built on mutual support that is as much as possible, out of the mainstream economy so that we stop supporting this system. It is our only way out. Our only way. More people are realizing this, after having seen what their "leaders" do to them. We have no leaders. We are it.
We all need to be OWS. We all need to start turning our backs on this system and start walking in a new direction. OWS is a reaction to a killer system, "business" as usual, but it is a reaction. Necessary as it is, it is not enough. A necessary start, but now it is up to the rest of us to carry it forward and build a new reality. It exists right here - no other planets necessary.
don't forget live ammo
These LRAD's are far more dangerous than police entities and the corporate media admit. They are weapons of mass torture and mass maiming. They can blast any type of recorded sound in a focused column three football fields in length to effect crowds of people either targeted by the blast or who happen to walk through the beam anywhere along its entire length.
These are weapons designed to inflict auditory pain and to permanently deafen or brain damage entire crowds. So far as I've been able to discover, they were tested first on civilians in U.S. Occupied Iraq. They can sustain a beam intensity of ~ 148 decibels and can pulse as high as ~ 165 decibels.
Depending on the intensity and duration of the beam-on-target, these sound weapons can do one of four things: (1) Inflict auditory pain sufficient to disperse anyone from the sound cannon's entire line of fire and radius of the sound beam. (2) Temporarily deafen people who are hit by or accidentally intersect the beam. (3) Permanently deafen people who are hit by or accidentally intersect the beam, and (4) permanently brain damage people who are hit by or accidentally intersect the beam.
LRAD's have been sold to China to help the totalitarian capitalists there repress their own people, despite the fact that American companies have been banned from selling arms to China since the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
Uses of LRAD's on Americans within the U.S. include:
Use of the LRAD on protesters during the 2009 G20 summit in Pittsburgh.
Use on "unruly crowds" by Pittsburgh police after the 2011 Super Bowl.
Used against college students at Western Illinois University on May 1, 2011.
Used by the Oakland Police Department during the clearance of the Occupy Oakland encampment on the morning of 25 October 2011.
Used as the NYPD cleared OWS protesters from Zuccotti Park on November 15th.
Pigs around Amurka (aka Pig-sty Central) have already colluded with right-wing judges in the courts to assert the legal fiction that defending oneself against "non-lethal" weapons is "against the law." The same way they try to claim that publicly taking video of police actions carried out in public is "against the law." I say buy and wear all the gear necessary to defend your ears from sound cannons and your eyes from chemical police weapons.
These violence loving pigs are thugs, murderers and traitors who despise the Bill of Rights but consider themselves patriots. A lot of them participated Amurka's illegal and brutal occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan maiming, murdering or displacing unarmed civilians and most of them (84% under the age of 40 according to one study) are half-whacked out of their minds on steroids.
Any of you remember those right-wing "Oathkeepers" (including present and former cops and soldiers) who used to show up on CD a few years back? I remember how one of them bragged that with their oath to protect the Constitution THEY'd be "the first ones to protect your progressive asses" when local and federal police are invited by their true masters to openly oppress We the People. Bragging about something they never had the balls or integrity to do in the first place as if they'd already accomplished it--typical useless right-wing sacks of shit. What a laughing stock they turned out to be. Anyone heard a peep out of them in two years now?
If they use LRADs, which can permanently deafen people and/or cause brain damage, what's to keep them from using bullets? I see no legal difference. In both cases, these are occurrences of battery against people. I expect reports to soon surface about people who sustained permanent damage from these LRADs. I'm afraid the Supreme Court will allow Bloomberg to go unpunished if and when it comes to that.
Wouldn't these LRADS also cause the same damage to all the cops who are in the vicinity?
They are aimed and focused at specific targets. However, according to several tweets from the demonstration, protestors have figured out a way to bounce the sound waves back to their source.
Hello metal,
At the start of the last paragraph you mention the "Oathkeepers". I think of them as "oafkeepers". The majority of them are all mouth and no action. Just another bought and paid for by the 1%'ers. A group that is worse than useless. In this case I would describe them as a used condom with more holes in it than a strainer.
The microwave cannons come next.
i am almost certain that NYC mayor bloomberg is not one of these wealthy americans who called for increase their taxes. bloomberg reportedly owns some $ 4 billions plus. his greed must be heriditery . that is what explains his animosity to the OWS demonstrations and beating and arresting its activists. nor, for that matter, are the coch brothers who are financing cain's campaign. it seems that the like wealthy are not inclined to give some of their amassed money to the needy or approve federal legislations to at least repeel bush's tax reduction and includes subsidise of the wars that their predident started and continued its out the federal budget appropriations.
The depravity of the 1% grows more evident each day. The darkness at the end of the tunnel are death camps. Create a new vision.
..
Wow, Gene Rodenberry could have hardly known how smack-dab on target he would be.
No, I think he knew that quite well.
The Klingons in Roddenberry's Star Trek mythos wielded hand-held sonic disruptors that, at highest setting, would disintegrate human beings. The US has researched sonic weapons of that intensity but not deployed any to my knowledge.
Any guesses on which city, state or federal official will be the first to come out with a statement like the following?
"Out of a sincere desire to defend the free speech rights of the OWS protesters as well as to protect their own safety and the public safety at large, I will be 'offering' the use of several 'free-speech' centers at closed, modified military bases throughout the country. Starting immediately, DHS buses will be mandatorily shuttling protesters to these faciities, where they will be enclosed and guarded (for their own protection,) and may continue to protest without threat of further arrest."
Add earplugs to the things you need to bring to hit the streets these days:
bandana
gas mask
helmet
liquid antacid
water
earplugs
Shields would not be a bad idea, either.
Shields in the hands of protesters have been adjudged "weapons" in some U.S. courts.
"allow for near instantaneous escalation across the force protection spectrum,"
Forgive me since perhaps I'm slow, but doesn't "force protection" suggest this is a device to use to protect the police force? And precisely what danger were the police in that they needed protection? Or perhaps "force protection" somehow means the protection of the 1% that force We the People to bear all the burden whilst they the self anointed steal all the resources?
As for those that suggest this is like Waco, we will see. If you study the origination of unions in the US you'll find incidents where US troops and Pinkerton agents opened fire (with live ammunition) on union protests, and finally that shock to the psyche of the American people turned their sympathy to the unionizer's cause. Although we hope it doesn't come to that, we should never forget that violence is the tool they know best how to use and always comes in to play when assassination (i.e. MLK) subterfuge, entrapment, and bribery fail to complete the task. The decentralized nature of this movement precludes assassination, one of the beauties of a movement with no explicit leaders- and it also makes the other "nonviolent" methods difficult, so their only resort is violence. The reason they keep reporters away is to prevent the public from becoming sympathetic in the face of the brutality of the ruling class and their servants as happened during the original union organizing in this country.
The subterfuge has been applied from the start, I've seen many examples, and contrary to what Juan Cole seems to think we all know the government has "plants" in every one of the larger gatherings, ready to be agents provocateur should the time be right and sharing any "inside info" with their masters. Unfortunately for the agents provocateur the movement by its nature and makeup doesn't provoke easily.
As predicted in multiple posts by multiple people. Sound cannons are just the beginning, if OWS can maintain its strength or - God forbid - even grow in numbers and duration. The Plutocracy that runs this cuntry will not tolerate a threat to its iron-fisted grip. As the movement escalates, so will the weapons and intensity used against the movement. I hope they understand what they are in for. If this movement grows to number in the tens of thousands (I'm too cynical to hope for hundreds of thousands) over a sustained period of time, I'm afraid that the gloves will come off. Thus far, it has been gumdrops and rainbows. Wait until the mafia that is the US Plutocracy really cracks down. :shiver:
OWS is already tens of thousands of people, and has already lasted over a "sustained period of time."
