US to Arabs: Don't Make Israel a 'Pariah' at IAEA
VIENNA - The U.S. envoy to the U.N. atomic watchdog urged Arab states on Monday to withdraw a resolution calling on Israel to sign an anti-nuclear arms treaty, warning it would send a negative signal to Middle East peace talks.

Arab countries, backed by Iran, are seeking to build on a victory at an assembly meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency last year when they narrowly won support for a non-binding resolution calling on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation treaty.
They are expected to propose a similar text to this year's meeting of the 151-nation assembly starting on Sept. 20, diplomats say.
The United States says that zeroing in on Israel, widely believed to be the region's only nuclear power, could jeopardise an Egyptian-proposed conference in 2012 to discuss creating a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.
Glyn Davies, the U.S. ambassador to the IAEA, said it may also have an impact on the relaunched, U.S.-backed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
"We need to send a positive impulse to that broader peace process, not a negative one," he told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation governing board, which takes place in the week before the assembly session.
Israel and the United States see Iran as the region's main nuclear proliferation threat, accusing it of seeking to develop atomic weapons. Tehran rejects the charge.
Israel has never confirmed or denied having atom bombs under a policy of ambiguity to deter its many regional foes.
It condemned last year's resolution urging it to accede to the 40-year-old nuclear NPT, saying it was backed by adversaries that question its right to exist.
Israel, which would have to forswear atomic arms and place all its nuclear facilities under the IAEA's watch if it signed the NPT, says full Middle East peace is a condition for it to join.
The United States alarmed Israel in May by backing Egypt's initiative for the 2012 conference, but the Obama administration has since pledged to keep the Jewish state from being singled out.
Davies said the priority was to make the 2012 conference possible and this would not happen by continuing to "bludgeon" one member state, referring to Israel.
"In order for 2012 to succeed all countries have to show up ... right now there is one country that has very little incentive to do that because of the way they are being made a pariah in this process," he said.
"We have been working with the Arab League but also other partners to urge them to withdraw the Israeli nuclear capabilities resolution to spare the (IAEA assembly meeting) another fight," Davies added.

I don't disagree with you that the Arabs may back down due to US pressure; however, I believe the $40 or $60B in arms is being forced down the US supported Saudi government's throat by the US government because of US defense industry lobbying and to get Saudi Arabia to put their US dollars back into the US economy. I don't see Saudi Arabia as having a military need for just weaponry.
Maybe, maybe not. As an Israeli defense analyst just told Haaretz: "these aircraft are to be used against Iran." The Saudis have always played our game, and vice-versa.
It's perfectly correct for the Arab states to demand the outlaw state of Israel conform to a law and organization attempting to promote civilized behavior. Nuclear weapons are Barbaric and 10000000% Uncivilized, and NO state can ever be considered civilized if it possesses nuclear weapons. Of course, it's clear why the Barbaric US Empire wants its partner in Barbarity to remain Barbaric. The Arab States should tell the Empire to shove it and contunue to demand what they know is right and proper.
Thank you, oh arbiter of civilization. Only the weak are civilized. Only the Arab states that treat women as second-class dogs, little boys as rape toys, and homosexuals as dead men, only the Arab states are civilized. They invented algebra, damnit!
That's why we're really in Iraq and Afghanistan, why we bomb villages and drop drone bombs--to protect the abused women, children, and homosexuals, right?
I almost forgot....we're there to bring Democracy to those countries. Wouldn't that include legislated rights for all those now being abused?
Anti Semitic propoganda painted Jews as the greatest sexual pervrerts. Be careful.
You're a bigot and your hateful misuse of humanitarian issues puts you right up there with the Michael Savage's of the world.
Isreal is the nation that kills thousands of Arabs yearly. That fact far outweighs your bizzarre cultural supremecy.
End All Aid To Israel Now!
for a second there I thought you were discribing the US, until you mentioned inventing Algebra.
"warning it would send a negative signal to Middle East peace talks."
What kind os asinine argument is that?
I cant beleive that they would come up with something like this. But then who knows who told him to parrot the Israeli line.
By the way will Israel stil get the frebies ( 30 billions) if Saudi does not get the goods paid for.?
"Israel has never confirmed or denied having atom bombs under a policy of ambiguity to deter its many regional foes.
"It condemned last year's resolution urging it to accede to the 40-year-old nuclear NPT, saying it was backed by adversaries that question its right to exist."
In other words:
The suspect, who has been confirmed by police sources to be heavily armed and dangerous, with a history of violent attacks on houses in the neighborhood, is at this time resisting the search warrant.
"I don't have to obey no f-ing law," the suspect muttered. "They're just all out to get me."
Fantastic! This is one of the most accurate and at the same time tragicomic report on Israel.
petrkrop,
i agree w/ Edip Yuksel it's a great analogy, putting israel's actions into terms that are very comprehensible to the average person (like myself).
...peace..
Orwell would be proud, or perhaps horrified, at the accepted use of Doublespeak and doublethink used by the new Oceania.
Oceania is all in favor of the Arab States joining the NPT, for none of them are nuclear armed, except Pakistan of course) but Oceania warns the conference not to force Israel (with several hundred nuclear missiles) into the NPT as that would be detrimental to peace?
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
Hurrah for Big Brother!!!
Neither Pakistan or Iran are Arab.
There is a single country in the Middle East which has nukes. To expect them to sign the NNPT is to " single them out". Really?
The WHOLE middle east should be nuclear free. That includes BOTH Israel and Iran. Ultimately the WHOLE world should be nuke free.
Israel should sign an anti-nuke treaty. They too are guilty of State terrorism and violations of international law. No state with such a dismal record should be allowed to have nukes. If Israel has nukes then Iran will have them too. If Israel does not sign this anti-nuke agreement then America should dump them as an ally and stop all financial aid of all kinds, including military. I hold Israel in no higher regard than any other country.
Agreed!
"Israel, which would have to forswear atomic arms and place all its nuclear facilities under the IAEA's watch if it signed the NPT, says full Middle East peace is a condition for it to join."
A condition for which Israel will ensure never will happen.
Exactly!
Why have no weapons inspectors ever been sent to Israel, since "Israel has never confirmed or denied having atom bombs"???
Well, see... Amerika and Western Europe don't like to invade Israel's PRIVACY, because Israel is known to be skittish about that sort of thing, and after all, they've been through SO MUCH.
I mean, hey-- they won't even send LUGGAGE inspectors to retrieve the stuff pillaged from the Gaza Flotilla.
Look! When Israel conforms to all UN resolutions, and obeys international law then and only then will anyone consider cutting them some slack. Other wise it's all a joke! 40bn in arms to the Saudi's sounds like a bribe. LOL! WTF!
Israel will get what it wants by hook or by crook with the help of its sugar daddy Uncle Sam.
.
It is time for the rest of the sane world to stand up to the United States and Israel, on the #1 Major Issue,,,, A Nuclear Weapons Free Middle East.
Tell U.S. Ambassador Glyn Davies,,,, that to give-in to Israel's and the United States' bully tactics is generating a NEGATIVE SIGNAL, not only to the Middle Eastern Nations, but to the whole planet.
Get serious, the State of Israel has over 750 Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction, as well as Global Delivery Capabilities,,,,,,,,,,Missles, Atomic Submarines, and long range Aircraft.
Israel can Nuke Europe, Middle East, Far East, Asia Minor Africa, Russia, China, and of course the good old U.S.A..
At present most of the nations of the Globe have no Nuclear Response. Israel is in a murderous position today.
Israel must be disarmed of its Nuclear Capability today, or tomorrow will be WWIII,,,,,,,,,, Sanity means a Nuclear Free World.
//
This is absurd Alice In Wonderland stuff, which practically defies comment.
That's going a bit far.
But the double standard is a blatant sign that the US and Israel are not negotiating in good faith. They simply seek to dominate and dictate, and not to find a mutually beneficial consensus.
The only reason the Palestinians continue to negotiate with "us" is because they are constantly being attacked.
Why should we give Israel a pass on nuclear proliferation while threatening Iran. As long as Israel has the bomb (and they do ) why should Iran not build a similar weapon. What would we do if Columbia or some other South American country started building a bomb?
We need to force Israel out of the nuclear armament and substantially reduce our own arms if we want peace and security.
Israel is being singled out because they are expected to abide by an agreement that every other country in the region is also expected to sign onto. Further, prohibiting a country from possessing weapons of mass destruction can only inhibit efforts to create a region free of weapons of mass destruction.
We live in such a wacky world.
It's passing strange how much US diplomacy-speak sounds so much like the mossadic trolls who patrol and infest these spaces.
Naahh! It's purely coincidental.
Israel is so screwed once China rules the world.
Enjoy the last 8 years of the American Century.
Another propaganda article by M$M (Reuters this time) that repeats the political talking points of that Israel is being singled out, without contesting how ridiculous (and Orwellian) the statement is.
Its the old west , and everyone wants the biggest guns,
because everyone knows he who has the biggest guns makes the best peace deals.
And you never want to show your opponent exactly what your packing.
Cha ching , military industrial complex and rich oil company's and banks..
These guys cant loose, can they.
Its an evil chess game , an every move had been thought out 15 years ago, the best of the best is playing a bunch of amateurs,,,
They just needed to move with their bought and paid for pawn,, W.
Give this devil his do, for when its all over, they will be the only one standing, and they will start a new game, that has been thought out while we loose this game.
A nation which does not have a Nuclear weapon is considered the greatest possible Proliferator?
And a Nation that the whole world knows has many Nuclear weapons claims that it has a policy of keeping other nations guessing. Who doesn't know for sure?
Fuck the United States. I'm with the Arabs on this one. This article doesn't even make sense, if you are human and truthful.
There's no question of 'making' Israel a pariah - IT IS A FUCKING PARIAH, and the stand of the U.S. on this issue constitutes a war crime in support of a war criminal state dedicated to genocide of the Palestinians. Israel has no interest in peace, and the situation of that shithole being armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons will only change when the U.S. tears the bastard off the tit and FORCES it on threat of invasion to disarm. Mind you, when is the U.S. going to disarm?
All of this, of course, is utter nonsense and will never happen, because the U.S. will sooner destroy itself than change policy regarding Israel - because it is afraid of 'God', 'G-d', 'Gyd', 'Yahweh', 'The Enraged Dad-Fairytale In The Sky', or whatever this mind-controlling, alleged deity-jackass is called, or because it's all about the cash and Jewish control of the financial system, or whatever convoluted Illuminati scenario is running this asshole perversion known as U.S.-Israeli relations. Therefore, best welcome the self-destruction of the United States - it's inevitable.
So true, sad, but true!
So the US government is telling the middle eastern nations that if you already have nuclear weapons, you can't be singled out for censure, but if you don't, you have to sign on to the NPT. I guess these states should all just nuke themselves, and let Israel be the only Mideast nation to exist, which is really what Israel wants.
Not to worry... Saud Puppets, Trans-Jordan Monarchy,
and Mubarak's dictatorship are all well past their "best before date".
The US/Israeli "House of Cards" is about to catch fire.
I'd like to wish all "Good Luck", but, well, this fall is
a long time coming, and I don't support Dupes of any sort.
As if any treaty signed with Israel would ever be worth a damn . . .
American hypocrisy at its maximum limit. Do you need any more proof of US complicity in Israel's acquisition of nuclear weapons? It makes me sick to watch this foolish American charade. How foolish do they think the rest of the world is?
I like the idea of a weapons-free zone. And while they're at it, how about a holocaust-free television channel? Enough is enough already. For reals.
Yes, and as we look at history, we go to the internet and google up "john f. kennedy and dimona" and find that David Ben Gurion lied to our fallen President, the only one who insisted that Israel never have nuclear weapons.
Again, the lies spewed forth from the murderers of Count Folke Bernadotte, as Ben Gurion repeatedly told Kennedy that Israel was not developing nuclear weapons. On July 5, 1963, Kennedy wrote the Prime Minister and told him to allow the United States' scientists access to inspect its Dimona plant in the Negevev Desert. Ben Gurion hemmed and hawed until Kennedy's assassination, after which Johnson and then Nixon were too afraid to touch the issue.
Israel developed the bomb in around 1967.
Well, all you need is for one Israeli to burn a Koran, and all bets are off the table.
WTF?
Decreasing the chances of unthinkable violence is such a bad, bad idea....
Now there is no hope for a mid-East peace deal without Hamas and Iran participation.
the US and Israel decided to make nukes the issue, not the Arabs.
They know by now when they are being used.
Jay Leno is right, those new American Saudi planes will be used against us.
That means more business for the MIC.
"Are we poor enough for peace yet, Dad?"
Apparently not, Son.
Oh, but Obama doesn't mind "singling out" Iran for sanctions for a non-existant nuclear capacity! This administration is no better than the last--lies, hypocrisy, double standards. Obama has squandered the peoples' trust, political momentum, and money. Kick this charletan out of the WH!
It is Israel that has singled itself out. Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia are all signatories. In fact, Israel stands apart with only India, Pakistan, and North Korea as not under the NPT.
