Venezuela Throws Out US Ambassador As Tensions Soar
CARACAS - President Hugo Chavez has thrown out the US ambassador to Venezuela and threatened to cut off oil supplies, further escalating tensions with Washington just two days after Russia sent two strategic bombers to Caracas in a move unseen since the Cold War.
Photo taken in Caracas in October 2007 of the then new US ambassador in Venezuela Patrick Duddy talking to the press after his accreditation. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered the US ambassador to leave the country within 72 hours on September 11, in an act of solidarity with Bolivia which also expelled its US envoy, after accusing him of contributing to divisions in the country. (AFP/File/Pedro Rey) The leftist South American leader, ever a vocal opponent of what he has called America's "evil empire", said he was expelling Patrick Duddy "in solidarity" with Bolivia's Evo Morales, who expelled Washington's ambassador to La Paz on Wednesday.
"Starting at this moment the Yankee ambassador in Caracas has 72 hours to leave Venezuela," Mr Chavez said at a public event in the port city of Puerto Cabello, 120km (75 miles) west of Caracas.
He then threatened to cut halt exports of crude oil to the United States if it displayed any aggression towards Venezuela. Despite years of tensions between the two countries Venezuela continues to be one of the United States' main overseas oil suppliers.
"If there is any aggression towards Venezuela" from Washington, "there would be no oil for the people of the United States," Mr Chavez said last night. "Go to hell, Yankees!" he thundered in an invective-laced speech against the US government.
The move caps a week of brinkmanship reminiscent of the Cold War era. On Wednesday, two Tupolev Tu-160 bombers arrived in Venezuela from Russia to carry out military manoeuvres, amid an ongoing standoff over the recent conflict in Georgia.
Just days before, Caracas and Moscow had announced plans for joint war games in the Caribbean involving a nuclear cruiser.
Though both countries denied that the exercises were related to the Georgia conflict, military analysts said Russia's provocative foray into what has traditionally been America's backyard was in response to the presence of US warships in the Black Sea.
The United States has been delivering aid to its ally Georgia as well as taking part in NATO war games in the Black Sea which the Kremlin has denounced as a Western military build-up on its doorstep.
Mr Chavez also announced yesterday that his government had uncovered a coup plot hatched by active and retired military officers, which he said had tacit US approval.
A military prosecutor said two officers - retired general Wilfredo Barroso and retired major Elimides Labarca Soto - will be tried for incitement to rebellion, a charge punishable by five to 10 years in prison.
Mr Chavez, a flamboyant former army colonel who models himself on the Latin American independence hero Simon Bolivar, has long blamed the United States for a failed coup attempt in 2002, as well of a number of other alleged plots. Washington denies all claims of involvement.
The socialist leader has denied that he is looking for a new Cold War, saying of the Russian bombers that their presence was intended to dissuade any aggression towards Venezuela.
"It is a warning," he said."Russia is with us ... we are strategic allies. It is a message to the empire. Venezuela is no longer poor and alone."
However he warned that the deployment signalled the "end of Yankee hegemony" and the beginning of a new "multi-polar world."
The US State Department implicitly linked the development to the crisis in the Caucusus, describing the bombers as "Cold War assets".
"It is something that we will watch very closely, as we have with the movements of other military assets for the stated purpose of this joint exercise," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
"I would just note, for example, that our military assets in the region of the Black Sea, for example, are there to deliver humanitarian assistance," Mr McCormack said.
"I will leave it to the Russians and the Venezuelans to describe the purpose of their activities," he added.
Russia has disputed the humanitarian purpose of the US presence in the Caucusus. Venezuela, which has strongly supported the Kremlin's stance over the conflict, accuses the US of trying to "encircle" Russia through the eastward expansion of NATO to include former Soviet satellites such as Georgia and Ukraine.
The United States is also facing significant challenges elsewhere in Latin America, as leftist leaders rally to Mr Chavez's side to create a socialist bloc to counter American influence.
On Wednesday President Morales of Bolivia ordered the US ambassador to La Paz, Philip Goldberg, to leave, accusing him of contributing to divisions in the country which the government warned was headed towards "civil war." Against a backdrop of increasing unrest, Mr Morales claimed the ambassador had given backing to armed opposition groups challenging his government.
In a tit-for-tat move, the US ordered the expulsion of Bolivia's ambassador to Washington, Gustavo Guzman, after saying that Mr Morales made a "grave error that has seriously damaged" ties.
Challenges to American power in the region were also coming from Argentina, angry over a court case linked to alleged campaign cash from Venezuela for President Cristina Kirchner, and Nicaragua, which has aligned with Russia in recognizing the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Show AllMore countries need to step up to the plate and force the warmongers in Washington to stop their war nonsense. I say cut off the oil and give us hemp to replace it. It's time for peace and real economic growth rather than borrowing money and calling it "American capital".
Sure, maybe Chavez can drink it, instead of selling it...
Chavez is “flamboyant”!?! Oh my gosh!!
Some might call Venezuelans foolish for accepting the CIA onto their land in the first place. This is a welcome trend in any case. They can come back when they have learned some table manners.
Pat, wacko, bible thumping, Robertson must be livid!
I doubt he cares. I also doubt he could find Bolivia on a map.
Bravo Chavez and Morales! Throw the US bumbs out!
This will be just another selling point for a McCain presidency - the "war hero who knows how to take care of these situations." And all those people concerned with Jessica Simpson's latest squeeze, or what the other Hollywood bimboes are doing, will hear one version only of what those terrible leaders of Russia and Venezuela are doing, and of course they'll be yelling for everyone to elect McCain.
Yippee, yahoo, yea! Throw out the lying snakes disguising themselves as "ambassadors" -- my ass!! Agents for the purpose of undermining governments that don't tow the US line and do its bidding! Rah, rah, rah for Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Argentina, and all developing nations sick and tired of U.S. agression. It's time for the US government to push off -- KMA!! Whoo hoo!!!
I am very supportive of Venezuela, and understand these South American countries are put in between a rock and a hard place, but it saddens me he has to be so buddy buddy with Russia and Iran and whatnot.
I hope for the best in Bolivia. Morales is a great guy and presents a lot of hope for indigenous people everywhere.
"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" -Epicurus
Why does it sadden you that he has to be so buddy buddy?
Because the US AND Russia are seriously imperialistic countries.
I receive an email about once a week, from Venezuela, concerning South American socialism. The uS has tried to assassinate (or oust) nearly every democratic/socialist leader in South and Central America. Then, they say, "they hate us for our freedom" (what freedom?) I hate to see Chavez "buddy up" with Russai too. Castro did the same thin gfor the same reasons. We have plenty of chances to create good realtions in our own hemisphere, but it will never happen until the neo-cons/liberals completley give up "Operation Condor"!!
The feelings that the govts,(and most of the people) of the Americas, have for the US is a sad microcosm/reflection of the way the rest of the world feels about the uS. Rather than "waiting for our moral leaderhsip"--I think they have had quite enough of us!From Pinochet to Allende--we have seriously fucked up our intl relations in our own hemisphere.
If 'socialism" terrifes you, just think--would you rather have Chavez or Morales? Or Bush?At least they were democraticaly elected.
When did the US try to assassinate:
Lula (Brazil)?
Tabare Vazquez (Uruguay)?
Bachalet (Chile)?
Christina Kirchner (Argentina)?
Evo Morales (you know where)?
That kind of sums up all the "leftist" South American leaders...
The US would be better of minding its own business. The country's economically in shambles and the foreign policy failures are SMASHING the country with more on the way. It's a total waste of taxpayer money to fund rightwing governments when that money could be better spent fixing the FAILED infrastructure in this country.
Go to Wikipedia . See Rene' Pre'val of Haiti--and go from there.I'm prertty sure everyoe you named is listed there.
Why in hell would Chavez just "hate the uS"? It doesnt make sense. Its sure not jealousy now!!
Castro came to us for help first--Kennedy decided no. So he went to USSR, If we would respect the Americas democratically elected leaders, and stop trying to open more "markets", they probably wouldnt turn to countries that we have tense relationships with.Maybe the indigenous peope of the Americas are just "bad people"--is that your explantnioan? We were fine with Russia, for awhile--til Bush "misread Putin's soul" , I guess, and started an encirclement policy around Russia
Stop trying to shove US misery onto other people!
"It doesn't make sense"? It makes PERFECT sense. There is nothing better than an external enemy to take peoples minds off of soaring inflation and crime. One is reminded of Argentina in 1982. An unpopular government. Soaring inflation. Rising crime. So, let's invade the Falklands. People today forget how the Plaza de Mayo was filled to overflowing with people supporting bashing the "enemy".
Of course, we all know how that turned out.....
An "external enemy" like Bush's and McCain's war on terrorism? Yep, you did get something right.
Cheers.
You might want to investigate the declassified documents and the NED.
http://www.venezuelafoia.info/english.html
The NED has a quite nasty history. McCain is part of it, of course, through the IRI, and so is Albright.

Try this: www2.truman.edu/~marc/resources/chron.html#Twentieth. As you will see, you cant name specific dates. "Oh! A LIBERAL professor!" I say, "Oh! A capitalist pig!".
Lula, Vaquez and Bachelet are quite centrist and neoliberal-capitalist in their economics - comparable to the liberal party in Canada or the Labor - party in the UK or Oz.
You forget a couple genuine leftists - Correa in Equador, and possibly (too early to tell) Lugo of Paraguay - a priest who is at least sympathetic to liberation theology.
Ther is a long history of CIA assassinations and assassination attempts against leftist Latin American leaders.
I was not aware that either Correa or Lugo has been assassinated. When did this happen?
You should take head out of the rightwing propaganda and grow up. Then you'll learn. Geez.
You're so impatient!
i think this is a bad move on the part of chavez and the venezuelan government.
he will not cut off the oil to the u.s. or his social programs will collapse.
I doubt he would have a hard time finding a buyer for the oil...
just a hunch, but generally speaking... china, india and russia have huge appetites for oil as well.. and would love to finally get some of the oil that the US has been hoarding/ hogging...
They can sell it to Russia, China, etc. US citizens are still under the false impression that the rest of the world "needs them". We have a very weak economy. Our"buying power" is down. And the only thing we export is WMDs!
No they CANNOT. Russia is an oil EXPORTER, duh, why would they import the stuff from Venezuela. China lacks the refinery capacity to process Venezuelan Heavy Crude. And, IF China COULD take the stuff, they would just stop buying from someone else, and the US would take that crude.
The only way Chavez can "punish" the US is to sell to NO ONE; causing prices to soar. But, as mentioned above, then his regime collapses, as the revenue will dry up.
Yet more FUD from the Lie Teller. China is currently constructing about 1MBpd in refining capacity able to use the heavy oils of both Iran and Venezuela; the US does not, nor are any being built in the US. And if you were really interested in telling the truth, you would admit that Venezuela has already shifted about 20% of its exports from the US to China. You also imply that all Venezuela exports is heavy crude, which is a very gross lie.
Covers blown dude. Time to get another pseudonym so you can return and be exposed again.
Dear Moron.
Currently constructing means years away. Suppose Venezuela DOES sell only to China. China will simply stop buying from Kuwait or whoever. And we will start....
The ONLY thing that matters is TOTAL GLOBAL PRODUCTION. The ONLY way Chavez can affect this is to shut down production entirely, and he does not dare do so, because such popularity he has at home is purchased with oil financed handouts.
Ah yes little turd. You don't read much of the comments here do you. You will eat your opwn words as your vaunted total globval production has peaked and is slowly declining. The bilateral contracts Chavez and others have are outside of the spot market and will sustain them quite well. So lie away. Everyone is on to your act. And as a troll, you are very weak.
You're not making sense. Yes, the US is the biggest oil consumer. However, there are plenty of countries around the world that don't produce oil which Chavez would gladly sell to. You think he's dumb? Dream on.
Of course he is dumb. ANY country that would buy Chavez's oil is buying oil NOW from somebody else. NO country will buy more oil than it needs. (Where do you put it?) THEREFORE, if Chavez sells oil to, say, China, (and he would have to do it at a discount because the Chinese would have to invest in refinery capacity), then China will buy less oil from Kuwait. So, China gets Venezuela's oil, and we buy the oil China no longer takes from Kuwait.
Yawn.
Again, the ONLY way to "punish" us is to stop selling, period, like the Arabs did in 1973. But, Chavez cannot afford this, since his popularity is built almost entirely on oil financed handouts.
It's soprtve hard to tell when the CIA tries to assassinate people, because their methods are so stupid, I have to wonder if its a joke! Exploding cigars, food that makes your beard fall out, etc.
As to "buying more oil than you need"--you'd have to ask Dubya why he kept filling the strategic oil reserve at record prices for so long--can you say "oil stocks"??
Because he is a fool. Or corrupt. Either way, he has access to the salt caverns in Louisiana to PUT the oil. China does not have anything like this. No other country could buy and store enough oil to matter.
You forgot to mention that the so-called "free" trade agreement with China that's responsible for the trade deficits with China has a lot to do with oil. Hint, the products made in China require more oil to manufacture (plastics is a perfect example) let alone transport. As for storing oil, LA has long peaked out.
China already owns us by buying up all our debt. Heaven help us when they decide to call it in. If people think we're screwed now it'll be nothing compared to when China demands it's money.
The US Empire is, using Dick Cheney's favorite phrase, in it's death throes.
The questions now are do we want to go down like Rome, and be destroyed from the outside? Or do we want to go down like Britain, and be quietly dismantled from the inside?
Actually, we OWN them...The old saw that "If I owe you a thousand dollars, I have a problem, but if I owe you a TRILLION dollars, YOU have a problem" holds. We could, as a last resort, do an Argentina and repudiate this debt.
Then what happens to China?
Let's see what could happen...nobody is willing to loan us money, we will have to buy everything with cash since no country will extend us credit, and the already weak dollar will take a nose dive because nobody will have confidence in it.
So I stand by my previous statement that China owns us.
Most of the world (especially the petroleum sector) is switching their foreign reserves from dollars to euros. The dollar used to command respect around the world but now it's laughed at.
You think China is going to let the US repudiate the debt? Dream on. They're tougher than you think. As a matter of fact, they're already taking over the US markets and along with Dubai, Saudi Arabia, etc ... owning American stocks lock stock and barrel. They'll make the US pay. They know every nook and cranny trick of capitalism and our dirty secrets and tricks. Don't even try denying it.
Truthteller is delusional. He still thinks the US has the clout to do as it wishes. Year right, China is just going to let the US give it the finger.
A sign of the times: everybody used to want to learn French, German and even Japanese but now our local university has a waitlist for it's Mandarin classes including the one they added to take the overflow.
Oh, I should add as well, the statement that Morales gave at the UN about the sixth mass extinction that we are causing was AMAZING! To think that there's a leader of a nation out there who would even mention it is already something to smile about, but his words were utterly powerful.

Here's more detail about the barely mentioned coup plot When you go to google news and search chavez coup, you get mostly US based or associated items. Prensa Latina has this and a related story linked to it.
From the standpoint of Imperial Planners, it makes sense to neutralize Chavez while attempting to foment civil war in Bolivia. But it appears Chavez and his allies were privy to the plans and are staging their own counter-coup. Depravity Central will deny its involvement as it always does, but we ought to know better based on past and current behavior.
Wow. Thansk for the link--never saw it before!
for info on the 2002 coup.. search for " the revolution will not be televised"... amazing reporting on the events which were filmed as they were happening.
I concur. If I was Chavez, I would have thrown the lackey Ambassador out a long time ago - like after the US sponsered assassination attempt in the 2002 aborted Coup. Throw the Yankee warmongering bastards Out! Yeah Chavez & Morales !
State Department flack McCormack sez: "I would just note, for example, that our military assets in the region of the Black Sea, for example, are there to deliver humanitarian assistance."

And I'm sure the locals, for example, will find the delivery of depleted uranium, for example, particularly useful.
South Americans are rejecting five hundred years of Euro/American genocide and imperialism. They are establishing Democratic governmental systems to conform with their Indigenous value system, one of cooperation and respect, not competition and greed. Do not underestimate the power of the Indigenous belief system nor it's sustainable values. Unlike Native Americans whose numbers have dwindled through continuing policies of genocide, many South American Countries have Indigenous majorities.
South American Countries have formed a political bloc with Russia and Iran, two oil rich countries strategically located to control the flow of a large amount of oil. They have chosen to take a stand against American imperialism. America must change it's foreign policy to reflect the realistic nature of these changed circumstances. American world domination is a myth. It appears that Western elites will risk nuclear war to exert their dominance. If that happens, nuclear war is what we will get. The belief in Christian Dominion must end. The belief in American Exceptionalism must end. It's time to choose life or death. Choose life.
Are you including Uruguayans in this assertian? Understand that Uruguay is the WHITEST country in the entire world; as they managed to kill basically ALL of their Indians...
We support the indigenous of South America, North America and all indigenous worldwide.
The US government is blowing hard on this issue because the fear that their payments and "technical guidance" to the coup plotters may be exposed by one or more of them.
I agree that Chavez should have tossed out the US ambassadors permanently even before the 2002 coup, but he is basically a peaceful guy who tries to bring opposing sides together.
