Republican Senators Break With Trump on Historic Yemen Vote

WASHINGTON

The Indivisible Project's associate policy director Elizabeth Beavers issued the following statement after the Senate voted to end U.S. participation in the Saudi-led Yemen war:

"We are watching history in the making. The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted last month to end unauthorized U.S. participation in the Saudi-backed war in Yemen. Today the Republican-controlled Senate followed suit. This is a stunning rebuke of the Trump administration's corrupt complicity in Saudi crimes, and a massive step toward strengthening the democratic checks and balances that are supposed to govern U.S. war-making. Now, it's time to finish the job.

"The House must now pass the same bill again. It is crucial that Democrats stick together and vote down any motions to recommit that Republicans might introduce to keep this historic bill from going to the president's desk. It is time for Congress to come together, stand up to the executive branch and restore the powers it was constitutionally given. Congress has an obligation to rein in Trump's authoritarian tendencies and prove that the government still works for the people."
