350.org Responds to Leaked Infrastructure Plan: “Trump is Paving Paradise to Build Climate-Wrecking Infrastructure”
WASHINGTON - Ahead of the State of the Union, media sources leaked a White House infrastructure proposal that scales back environmental regulations to fast-track construction of pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure. The proposal helps the fossil fuel industry build oil and gas pipelines by gutting environmental reviews, ignoring indigenous rights, and silencing climate science concerns from agencies like EPA.
In response, 350.org executive director May Boeve made the following statement:
“Trump is paving paradise to build climate-wrecking infrastructure - pipelines that carry polluting fossil fuels and other inevitable disasters. This phony infrastructure package sidelines the health and safety of our communities for a give away to the fossil fuel industry and corporate developers.
“What we need is 21st century clean energy infrastructure, not a bunch of pipelines that keep us caught in a destructive fossil fueled era. While Trump is stuck in the past, communities are demanding a fossil free future - one where their cities and states make a fast and just transition to 100% renewables, where fossil fuels are kept in the ground, and where there are millions of good paying jobs in burgeoning sectors such as wind and solar.
“In the last year alone, we’ve seen indigenous communities, backed by farmers and ranchers, voice strong opposition to climate-wrecking pipeline projects like the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines. Trump’s latest ploy is most certainly a response to the record participation by communities in pipeline review processes, many efforts blocking such infrastructure projects.
“We will fight this proposal tooth and nail. And we start this Wednesday by joining with dozens of climate activists in Washington D.C. to lay out our plans for a fossil free future.”

FRIENDS: Help Us Fight
Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
350 is the red line for human beings, the most important number on the planet. The most recent science tells us that unless we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth. But solutions exist. All around the world, a movement is building to take on the climate crisis, to get humanity out of the danger zone and below 350. This movement is massive, it is diverse, and it is visionary. We are activists, scholars, and scientists. We are leaders in our businesses, our churches, our governments, and our schools. We are clean energy advocates, forward-thinking politicians, and fearless revolutionaries. And we are united around the world, driven to make our planet livable for all who come after us.
