TechnoratiWASHINGTON - Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, NBC News has learned.

She would be
the first woman ever to serve on a Republican presidential ticket. The
pro-life Palin would also be the first Alaskan ever to appear on a
national ticket.
Palin, 44, was elected Alaska's first woman governor in 2006. The state's voters had grown weary of career politician Gov. Frank Murkowski, whom she defeated in the GOP primary.
"I've been blessed with the right timing here," Palin said before the election. "There's no doubt that Alaskans right now are dealing in an atmosphere of distrust of government and industry."
On Aug. 1, she scored a major victory when the Alaska legislature passed a bill that authorizes her administration to award a license to TransCanada Alaska to build a 1,715-mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope to a hub in Canada.
The pipeline would be the largest construction project in the history of North America. If completed as hoped within ten years, it would ship 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The United States imported about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day in 2007.
Under investigation for firing
But
Palin's seemingly bright future was clouded in late July when the state
legislature voted to hire an independent investigator to find out
whether she tried to have a state official fire her ex-brother-in-law
from his job as a state trooper.
The allegation was made by former Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, whom Palin fired in mid-July.
"It is a governor's prerogative, a right, to fill that cabinet with members whom she or he believes will do best for the people whom we are serving," Palin told CNBC's Larry Kudlow in an interview on Aug. 1. "So I look forward to any kind of investigation or questions being asked because I've got nothing to hide."
Palin also reacted to the indictment of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens by calling it "very dismaying." She added, "Hopefully though, this won't be a distraction and get people's minds off what has to be done in the grand scheme of things."
As for the prospect of her being vice president, Palin told Kudlow that she could not answer the question of whether she wanted the job "until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day. I'm used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we're trying to accomplish up here...."
Palin is married to Todd Palin, a lifelong Alaskan who is a production operator on the North Slope and a four-time champion of the Iron Dog, which is described as "the world's longest snow-machine race."
Mother of five
They have five children. Their son, Track, enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 11, 2007.
Palin birth to their fifth child, Trig, last April. The baby boy has Down syndrome, a genetic abnormality that impedes a child's intellectual and physical development.
"When we first heard, it was kind of confusing," Palin said, according to an account in the Anchorage Daily News. She called the news "very, very challenging."
But she added in a note, imagining what God would say to her family, "Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world you live in down there on Earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome."
Palin made a name for herself in Alaska politics by serving as mayor of Wasilla City for six years and going on to run unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in 2002.
Clash over ethics
After
her unsuccessful run, Palin received an appointment to the Alaska Oil
and Gas Conservation Commission, where she ended up serving a role in
an ethics probe into Republican Party Chairman Randy Reudrich, who was
questioned about conflicts of interest with the oil industry.
The investigation ultimately forced Ruedrich to resign from the commission.
Palin's role in the investigation left her a party outsider, but she was able to win the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary against Murkowski, going on to win the 2006 general election by seven points over her Democratic opponent.
During one debate before the primary, Palin said she was in favor of capital punishment in especially heinous cases such as the murder of a child. "My goodness, hang 'em up, yeah," she said.
Born in Idaho, Palin moved to Alaska with her parents in 1964, when they went there to teach school.
She received a degree in communications and journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

She tried to get her brother-in-law state trooper fired, heh?! Interesting and non-good news. And that's only one of her flaws; she's also pro-war. She seems to have more "wit" than McCain and this is good, but also not; being good because McCain's an idiot, but bad because she'll be more evil. Not a good sort of choice to make, imo. After all, if she's pro-war, whcih she is, then she's probably pro-death penalty, that awfully unjust system, and ... so on.
I agree that the McCain campaign taking her on as v.p. running mate is to only try to boost Rep. Party chances of getting the election; but anyone half aware of reality should be able to see this ... trick and avoid being influenced to do as it says.
And I just hope Obama supporters will get him, as U.S. President, to do what needs to be done and to always stand by truly just decision-making.
I don't trust him, either, but good luck to the people who elect him U.S. President. But I'll hopefully be proven to be mistaken.
So what does this all mean?
1. McSame knows his candidacy is toast--not since Barry Goldwater picked William Miller to be his VP running mate or Walter Mondale picked Geraldine Ferraro has there been a less plausible running mate for a presidential candidate. (If they wanted a serious woman VP candidate they could have picked Christy Todd-Whitman, Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, or Elizabeth Dole for instance)
2. Even Republicans are getting tired of white men dominating presidential tickets (but only conservatively so).
3. Sarah is bored being in AK and this will give her a nice chance to see the lower 48 (and maybe even Hawaii if she's lucky) on the corporate dime on which all Republican and Democartic campaigns depend.

She cares little about the law, she just wants to identify her vast number of specific enemies and reap vengeance. If you're not perfect to her, you're her arch enemy and nemesis. That's the real reason she's under investigation right now by an independent special counsel. There are two kinds of Alaskans, those who believe her wholeheartedly, that she fights corruption and is Ms. innocent superchristian, and those who suspect she backstabbed her way to the top and manufactured her popularity out of whole cloth.
Haven't you ever gotten curious about that video of her shooting a man-killing semiautomatic weapon in rapid fire at the target range. That's not hunting. That's preparation for going postal. Just in case.
Governor Sarah Palin shorted her kids' time to be governor. She ditched her latest kid fast, probably because it wasn't perfect. She's not about kids, she's about herself. As VP, she won't see that baby for a long while.
Her far right religion supports her backstabbing temperament. Some of these way out Christians are wildly on the hysteria side. All of their bitter personal enemies are felt to be completely divorced from God. That's how they justify their own far-from-Christian behavior toward people who are actually their neighbors.
Keep your fingers crossed that she rubs out her political enemies list at the Republican National Convention next week. And tell Obama/Biden to keep their heads down. Palin brings it. That's all she knows.

I think this election is still up in the air. A lot of planned and unplanned things can still happen between now and November. How Big Media spins; how these temperamentally bizarre, mismatched candy-dates act in the McDebates. Biden and McCain will fang after each other with venom sacs pumping if Big Media gives them half a chance. McCain is an overly stung, stiff-necked reactionary SOB out for as much revenge against key members of his own Party as he is for DLC blood. Because of these old conflicts, his naturally fiery temperament and growing senility, he's more unpredictable than Biden and could verbally undo himself.
Biden is a lout, but when he's on his game he can field and return quickly and carve up a debate opponent. His problem is his own towering ego. He really wants to take on the ever-sheltered Duhhbya, but he will have to make do with former GOP whipping boy-come-desperate-"hero" McCain. Biden may think McCain is not true neo-con meat (just flipping to all their positions for campaigning's sake) and thus screw himself by not taking Gramps seriously enough and not reacting rapidly enough. McCain likes to thrust directly at vital organs but his vision ain't too good and he often thrusts wildly; Biden likes to humiliate by a dozen cuts and then kill in two. If Biden comes across as either too half-interested or gratuitously smart-ass while doing it, then he may undo himself.
How Obama and Palin react to each other could turn out to be the key. He needs to verbally cut her down to size without appearing to be personally offensive. Palin uses Valley Girl expressions like "Way more!" which isn't as effective with the rubes as Bush's "folksy demeanor." If Obama acts too much like Vulcan Tuvok of Star Trek Voyager or if Palin comes across like a dippity-do drill team captain zorched on power meth it could go either way.
Realistically speaking, if McCain gets into the White House, Amurka is done to charred flithers. The Constitution is a dwindling memory. If Obama catches the brass ring: Look at all the chaos he inherits. We will know in 3 months whether he will stand up to the Rahm Emmanuel, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid WTO/Fascism Booster Club. If he caves to them in his first 100 days, then the job of true progressives will be clear and threefold: Organize one (1) Progressive People's Party out of all the disparate un-herded cats; organize to hold Obama's feet to the fire by consistently demanding progressive plank policies; organize to recapture as much mass media access as possible starting with low power FM and a redistribution of the digital spectrum (stolen by Big Media in the most expensive public rip-off of U.S. citizens in U.S. history until Duhhbya came alone).
Lastly, the ticking alarm clock here won't just go off with the final demise of the U.S. Constitution, but the ability of human beings to survive in a decently habitable biosphere over the next 40 to 70 years. We may have less than 10 years to do something about that last.

I am not sure she will come off as an airhead in a debate with Joe Biden. Those beauty queens are often clever, disciplined, competitive women who know how to deliver a few platitudes and to work a crowd. After all, she did manage to become the governor or a roughneck, macho-male state with just her childbirth experience (I don't think she personally takes care of them), good self-care habits, congeniality and a degree in communications.
I'll bet Joe Biden's handlers are discussing what tone he should take in the debates.

When this year's hurricane season has finished smashing the Gulf States oil infrastructure, and the prices off all things made from or affected by oil shoot through the roof, there will be plenty of public unrest.
That's why Bush signed Presidential Directive 51, which suspends the constitution in times of emergency, and transfers ALL powers and decision making to the occupant of the Whitehouse, with FEMA acting to occupy all levels of government and administration. Oh, and Blackwater is already acknowledged as the 'Fifth Arm' of the US Armed forces,(well, sixth actually... everyone forget that the US Coast Guard is part of the US military) with a contract already in place to provide 'police' and 'national guard' capabilities.

I cannot afford to "get of hte grid" I caanot buya hybrid and when they tried to install insulation upstairsz (HEAP) the roof collapsed! This pc and ISp are a temporary gift!I grow a garden and can/dry my own food, as much as i caqn on 1/10 of an acre. That is not what i'm talking about. Some changes simply have to come at the top! I am NOT a Hillary fan--I think she is just fine, as far as politicians go--Obama, too. That being said, 18 million people voted for her, mostly in traditional swing states. If Obama thinks that running throught the impoverished Rust Belt with BIDEN intow is going to win him these states, I'm afraid he is mistaken.Alot of people here lost their homes, thanks to Biden;s MBNA credit card /bankruptcy bill--they had to get loans to pay med. bills-hint--offer natl healht care. After reading a little about this lady, I get a good feeling about her, a far better feeling than I get about Biden! How surprising that McCain would choose the more appealing running mate. Frankly, I'd sooner vote for McCain now than Obama. However, neither even come close to my first choice, which is Ron Paul.

After reading more about her - as someone suggested - I think she's a bit too extreme after all. I stand corrected. Nevertheless, as I stated, Ron Paul is by far my first choice. In stating that I preferred McCain/Palin over Obama/Biden I was merely making a choice between two abominable options! I never had any intention of voting for either pair and still don't.

Palin is tied to the VERY right wing Armageddonist Christian group 'Joel's Army', a very militant charismatic millennialist sect of Christian Dominionists that literally believe they are 'God's Army'. The very publicly stated aims of this group are to forcibly convert the entire world to a strict Christian doctrine and expunge human rights and democracy. I'm from Alaska. I know Sarah Palin. She does not deserve all the vicious, misanthopic vomit being spewed at her on this web page. While I disagree with much of her politics, Sarah Palin is an honest, sincere human being willing to learn and adapt to new information and situations.
Here in Alaska, Sarah took on the "old boy network" within her own party, exposed their corruption, and got elected governor against the odds. Yes! Sarah is pretty and a mother of five children and believes in "intellgent design" and hunts in the autumn and snowmachines in the winter. Sarah lives in a harsh land. Believe me, she's smart, capable and tough enough for any job.
Choosing Sarah Palin for VP was John McCain's first smart move in a really dumb campaign. Of course, hard-core feminists, urban Liberals and the Progressive Cult of Doom will not be influenced by Sarah Palin, but I think millions of Americans will be impressed with her once they learn Sarah's story.

Corruption is endemic. The difference is Alaska is one of the states that has been on the public dole for so long that their sense of entitlement seems to be incidental to what they proscribe for everyone else. The presidency requires a bit more of a resume than telling a story.
