Blackwater ‘Blood Money’ Angers Iraqis
Two Iraqi Families of Victims Killed by Blackwater Guards Tell ABC News They’ve Refused Compensation From the Company
At least two Iraqi families of victims killed by Blackwater security guards in September tell ABC News they have refused compensation offered by the company.
The father of a 9-year-old boy, who says his son was one of the 17 civilians killed when Blackwater guards, escorting a diplomatic convoy, opened fire at Baghdad’s Nisour Square on Sept. 16, says he is trying to file a lawsuit against the company. He told ABCNews.com that Blackwater offered him $20,000 through an Iraqi prosecutor, but he refused the money.
Another Iraqi who lost both his wife and son in the incident says he too has refused the company’s offer of compensation of $20,000 for each victim.
Adel Jabur Shamma, who was injured in the incident, says he was bed-ridden for six months after being shot in the thigh. He says he was given $10,000 by the Iraqi prosecutor who is mediating between the families and Blackwater, but that the amount isn’t nearly enough to cover his surgery. He says he took the money because he had no other choice.
While a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. investigates the deaths, Blackwater has been operating behind the scenes in Iraq to offer condolence payments to survivors and families of the dead.
The company released a statement this afternoon saying: “At the request of U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Blackwater has reached out to the families of those killed or injured in Nisoor Square on September 16 as part of this condolence payment process. These are customary condolence payments, and are not an admission of guilt, but recognize that Iraq is an extremely dangerous place. When faced with an enemy intent on maximizing civilian casualties, innocent people will tragically be caught in the crossfire; when that happens, their suffering should not go unrecognized.”
Officials familiar with the case told ABCNews.com last month that Blackwater had resisted U.S. government demands that the company pay at least $100,000 per death, claiming the U.S. government itself hasn’t paid that much in similar situations.
As ABCNews.com has reported, the federal grand jury criminal investigation is focusing on two or three Blackwater guards who opened fire, claiming they perceived a threat. Other Blackwater guards have testified to federal agents, however, that they saw no such threat.
Several of the Iraqi families have already filed lawsuits against Blackwater in U.S. courts, alleging the security guards were guilty of “war crimes.”

How about war crimes trials for the Bush Administration and their cronies at Blackwater?
What would be ironic, though rough justice, is if a family or clan member of the murdered Iraqis get their revenge by killing Erik Prince (Chief Executive of Blackwater). Considering the Bush Great Lurch Backwards that Prince’s company has been a complicit part of (the British East India Company has nothing on them), it has a certain appropriateness that Dante would have appreciated.
Blackwater is americas AL Qaeda.
I have very little faith in the future of america toward some type of peace. Impeachment maybe get the message across to future presidents.
McCain has early signs Alzheimer, I would bet money on that!
Blackwater is the twisted heart of America on display, front and center.
Can you imagine being offered $20K for your murdered child, with no apology, just a “bad shit happens in Iraq, we really wish we could do something about what happened, but we just can’t.”
I want to hear Hillary and Barack asked some questions about these and other corrupt, criminal organizations being paid for with our tax dollars and representing the 250 billion a year hole on our nations bank account.
Honor above money?! ARE YOU LISTENING, CONGRESS???!!!
Let’s see. The families of the victims of 9/11 were offered over one million dollars each in condolence payments.
I guess then since they were offering $20,000 to these victims that the current exchange rate is one American life is worth 50 Iraqi lives?
Or considering 4000 American soldiers have been killed while 1,300,000 Iraqi lives have been lost makes the exchange rate more on the order 300 to 1?
But Bush thinks it must all be worth it so I can drive my SUV.
The death of a child is the most stressful event is anyone’s life. Individuals and families rarely survive such an event.
To be offered monetary compensation is an insult.
jjpeter
Don’t expect anything from Obomber or Hitlery. They both support using nuclear weapons (”All options are on the table”) on the Iranians.
Blackwater USA should never been allowed to represent us anywhere, but that is what Bush/Cheney want….. private Militia who is not accountable to anyone… what do we think all the detention centers are about….
“Quote from Peter Dale Scott: “The contract of the Halliburton subsidiary KBR to build immigrant detention facilities is part of a longer-term Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of ‘all removable aliens’ and ‘potential terrorists.’” These in my estimation are not for illegial immigrants but for “We the People” who will eventually rise up against the establishment” We sit back and watch the attrocities of the Bush Administration with nothing, so far that can be done to make them accountable…. Blackwater’s pitiful attempt to smooth over the blatant overuse of their power must be a slap in the face the those Iraqi families — but they do not care anymore then Bush/Chaney. They have one goal, one adgenda and Lord help us if we get in their Way…
F&ck Blackwater, bunch of depraved criminals!
Here’s the deal:
We The People work, earn a wage, pay taxes. Our government hands those taxes over to Blackwater. They spend our taxes on guns and bullets, which they then use to “accidentally” kill innocent Iraqis. Then they offer the Iraqis they didn’t kill more of our taxes to shut up and go away.
Every single dollar Blackwater “earns” is a taxpayer dollar; every penny of “hush” money also a tax penny.
Hence, Blackwater is just the middle-man, and everyone on Earth knows this… except for We The People…
I have wondered at times what a child’s life was worth. ___ Now I know what our government places on it.
I can assure any, that losing a child, especialy due to negligence by another, is something no one wants to ever have to live with. Over time the pain eases, but the wound never heals. ___Never.
How do we know who is guilty of war crimes? Easy. Search the individuals. If they have an American passport or military ID, they are war criminals. Drag their asses to Nuremberg and let them stand trial. In 1947 we hung Japanese and Germans for what these bastards are doing.
It is very alarming that in Blackwater’s statement they take zero responsibility and blame an “enemy that is intent on maximizing civilian casualties.”
Get these private firms out and hold them accountable for their actions.
You are paying for it…all of it…DO NOT DECLARE THIS APRIL! Or be complicit…if you rationalize this..you still are guilty of making the entire evil process possible..the BLACKWATER funding was approved by congress and the senate…and yeah..even obama…who’s got my vote..but not my money to play with…they have yours though..so go ahead and rationalize…make excuses…just talk and talk and talk…but no real action…why? you are AFRAID! period!
you are afraid of your government, and yet you pay them to keep you in fear…hunh?…well.until those of you who do not agree with these policies get a real backbone…thee will be no change..for there is only ONE thing that they need from you to keep this going…YOUR MONEY! without that..they cannot continue! period!
so..pretend that somehow your money is not actually involved in the policies you decry…go ahead…pretend..but you simply are…AFRAID!
so live in fear, and continue to pay for their policies of evil and death and destruction…and continue to utter empty words that you are afraid to back up with any REAL action…because again…you are afraid…
it’s too bad..this is really the problem..our forfathers picked up rifles…you cannot even refuse to pay….you cannot even partake of the ONE power and actually NON-VIOLENT form of PROTEST we have…to simply NOT PAY…let alone actually…FIGHT for your freedom…nope! you cannot and will not..you will pay and pay and pay…you are afraid..
I am NOT COMPLICIT in these crimes..I AM DOING EVERYTHING I CAN TO REMAIN “ABSENT” FROM THE FUNDING AND SUPPORT OF THIS GOVERNMENT….WILL YOU?
Had it been an American walking in the square along with the other Iraqis who had been shot and killed, I wonder if the Blackwater Thugs would have had the “cojones” to offer a mere $20,000.00 with a “shit happens” appology..
The world is not oblivious to the double standard evident in the U.S.
This is common practice with the death of Palestinians at the hands of the Israely occupation forces, Palestinians are by U.S. media standards, just a notch above dead dogs.
I see no difference in the way Balckwater operates and the way the IDF operates VS palestinians… But alas they are just dead “dogs” no media hype about it will ever really appear in the U.S.
It is amazing how much misery has been brought about to so many in the middle east by the “Democratic” countries of this world, starting with England and continued by the U.S. and pseudo-democrtatic Israel !
All for what…. OIL !
God forbid that oil be discovered in the middle of some poor African nation, because we will find an excuse to liberate them too…from their oil!
It appears that we ARE the Great Satan. Economic imperialism, Christian dominion, applied death machines, are returning to haunt us. The devil’s cry, “we are here to help you,” is now rightly understood to mean “surrender your sovereignty.” The Great Satan is collapsing under the weight of it’s own greed, and the world is applauding. The medicine of hardship is self curing and American hardship appears to be the only cure. The land of milk and honey is about to be slimed.
Your tax dollars at work.
Hitler had his savage “Brown Shirts” (the “SA”) and later his even more savage “SS” (the “Black Shirts”).
Both were paramilitary groups owned & operated by the Nazi Party - not the German State.
GW’s grandfather Prescott Bush managed the funding for both the paramilitary groups.
The Fascists most certainly did not lose World War Two. They waged war from Wall Street, where the remain in power today.
There is the quote: “…their suffering should not go unrecognized”. I couldn’t agree more. So let the Iraqi families of the dead be allowed to sue those half-wit, sociopathic, lying, thieving, murdering c*ck**ckers in United States courts. These mercenary pr*cks, and the trigger-happy, crackers they employ have immeasurably set back the U.S. effort in Iraq, and have served to tarnish the reputation of the U.S. worldwide for at least a generation. We owe them nothing. Let’s recognize this private-contractor freakshow for what it is, and start assisting the Iraqis in obtaining redress.
Let Prince and his thugs stand trial in an Iraqi court of law.
“These are customary condolence payments, and are not an admission of guilt, but recognize that Iraq is an extremely dangerous place.”
Anyplace becomes a “dangerous place” when Blackwater have a free-hand in it…(ask someone who was in NOLA in 2005).
Watch-out, San Diego area — you’re next!
“Hitler had his savage “Brown Shirts” (the “SA”) and later his even more savage “SS” (the “Black Shirts”).
GW’s grandfather Prescott Bush managed the funding for both the paramilitary groups.”
I wasn’t aware that [later] Sen. Prescott Bush himself managed the bank-account for those Org’s (I thought just for Hitler’s naval/military ‘rebuilding’?). But, I do know that by the belated-time an Act of Congress forced P. Bush to cease-business with them (the Nazi’s) and ‘confiscated’ the Funds, the account was only worth about 6-million (this was well-into 1942). I also know that SOMEHOW Prescott had the ‘pull’, by the mid-1950’s and as a Senator, to get the US Government to give-back all that money (plus Interest!) — and to him, personally…
[I believe this ‘windfall’ was then put to ‘good’-use in starting young Bush-I’s “political-career” and oil-Interests — after his post Skull’s ‘tenure’ with/in the CIA, from the Kennedy-era on].
I guess all that ‘Success’ takes in this-country is “Press-influence to ‘cover-up’ skeletons, political-pull, a good-Lawyer, and ‘Cash’…” (although an aristocratic/British family-tie ‘helps’ — ask Gore). Of-course, all-that was pretty-much ‘true’ in pre-WW-II Germany, also…
Remember too that it will Blackwater patroling our streets when - not if - Bush declares martial law.
Excellent statistics bystander, but you “must think it must all be worth it” too since you still drive your SUV. It you are going to make it real, keep it all real.
Terran, woud you rather a McSlain not only keep the Bush War going, but would increase the number of troops? jjpeter’s request is the right one.
jCrumb: I read your post. Thank you for your understanding. I enjoyed the whole caps thing. Your idea is good but is it realistic? I know that from the anarchist point of view you do what you think would be best, assuming everyone did it. The reality, however, is that if only a few do it (not pay taxes) they could be arrested and even disappeared for supporting terrorism. Defending yourself could be expensive and disrupt work and cost even more. Is there not a mechanism for putting tax money in escrow while suing for an exemption on the grounds that the war is illegal?
You cannot soil the reputation of the US anymore than you can soil a used tampon.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe when Blackwater tried to offer $20,000 to family members of the victims of September’s open fire in Nisour Square, they weren’t offering an insulting payoff on the lives of the innocent, but were trying to spread the virtues of capitalism by teaching the Iraqi citizens a lesson that, in an open market, everything has monetary value.
And it seems the private contractor succeeded in its edifying endeavor, because now the victims’ families are rightfully trying to file lawsuits against the company. I suppose you can teach about capitalism and democracy, but the one thing you can’t teach is the utter soullessness and contemptible greed that is required to enter the inside circles of administration cronies and their sewage-shovelling bedfellows, the contractors. In fact, Blackwater’s infuriating statement addressing the payoffs I believe adequately demonstrates the hollowness of the voids where their hearts should be:
“These [payoffs] are customary condolence payments, and are not an admission of
guilt, but recognize that Iraq is an extremely dangerous place. When
faced with an enemy intent on maximizing civilian casualties, innocent
people will tragically be caught in the crossfire…”
In terms of promoting Democracy, by outsourcing our burdens to private contractors, we have passed along the capitalist greed, but we seem to have missed the boat on democratic ideals. The Bush administration has worked for the past five years to install such a cesspool of bureaucratic disorder that things like accountability and transparency, ironically two cornerstones of democracy, are impossible.
Progressive Future also has a petition demanding consequences for Blackwater: http://www.progressivefuture.org/blackwater?id4=BLCD. Let’s not let the inevitable fury that anyone with a soul would experience upon reading the callousness of Blackwater’s statement lead to jaded inaction. Let’s promote democracy ourselves, by demanding our government install a system of accountability for the actions that represent our country in the global community.
I’m not trying to convert anyone to Christianity, but do read the “Book of Revelations” in the Bible. Do you see any similarities between the Whore of Babylon and the US?
It is just as well that the Iraqis refused Blackwater blood money. Now Blackwater can give more to McBush’s campaign.
Such “compassionate christians” these Blackwater guys are. It’s one thing to be “caught in the crossfire” and quite another to be the “target OF that fire” as these innocent people were. But, that’s ok. You can always go back and “pay them off, right?” You can “judge a tree by the type of ‘fruits’ it produces” (see Matthew 7). This story reminds me of another story: “The Tale of Two Cities”, Where the french ‘aristocrat’, after having run over and killed a child, ‘tosses a gold coin’ at the grieving parents, (as if that will offset their sorrow),-only to have it ‘tossed back’ at him. As Proverbs 6:34-35 says “…He (the grieving relative),will have no consideration for any sort of ransom, neither will he show willingness, no matter how large you make the present.”
Here’s the thing guys, I don’t believe in capital punishment - any capital punishment… it’s too easy. Life in prison and by that I mean the term of their natural lives. You MUST make at least one example otherwise all of this is okay.
It’s time for an international similtaneous concerts just like the aid concerts, held in NY, LA, Tokyo, Sydney, Bhagdad, Rome, Berlin, Johanesburg, Paris, Stockholm, London… Impeach and imprison the captains of this conflict: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Blair, Howard, and the leaders of all other nations in the Coalition of the Willing along with the CEOs of the Vulture companies. This is not just an American issue. It is a global/secret government/corporate issue.
Blackwater… How the hell did they come up with the most common name in SE-Asia for dysentery along with alluding to Hitler’s SS… Is this a sense of humour? Or are they really that dumb?
There would be no more perfect justice than cheney and bush knowing they would spend the rest of their lives in prison. Put them in the same cell with rummy, condi and wolfy and watch them all cry.
I’ll need to ask my elected officials what noble cause was served by the taxpayer financed execution of a nine year old boy. Maybe they will hold a townhall meeting on a bridge in Fallujah to explain their actions.

Watch out for Blackwater coming to your neighborhood soon, specially if you live near the Mexian border. Potrero California was to be the “Blackwater west” site. They managed to buy their way into this small comnmuity’s planning group. It took a lot of hard work to finally kick Blackwater out of Potrero. Good riddance
It is scarry how Blackwater worked out the whole deal quietely. The media had nothing to say when they moved in or when they moved out! Somehting tells me they will try for some other small neighborhood near the mexican border soon.
So watch out and have courage. Potrero’s small population of about 800 managed to stand up to Blackwater and so can you
Good goin’ Blackwater. Your management makes me feel proud to be American.
How much compensation should be offered? How much is a life worth?
Fortunately an american judge has answered this:-
WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran must pay $2.65 billion to
the family members of the 241 U.S. servicemen killed
in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in
Beirut, a federal judge ruled Friday, calling it the
largest-ever such judgment against another country.
http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5g1XRa7v7LYwf0sCshPG2V0YZdmoQ
Now 2.65 billion divided by 241 is $11 million each. That is how much a
a life is worth.
Now this bombing was part of the campaign by hizbollah to remove illegal
occupiers from lebanese soil. The Americans had no right to be there.
The Iraqis, on the other hand, have every right to be in Iraq, and
Blackwater has no right to be there. Given these circumstances, I think
we could justifyably triple the value awarded by
the judge, and that is how much the US should pay for EACH Iraqi.
Honor above money. This reminds me of the Donner Party, that group of white American settlers who were headed to California in 1864, but got stuck in the Sierras in a snow storm. They ended up starving and eating each other. The only ones who refused to eat humans were the Indian guides.
The great lie that is perpetuated by the white power structure is that brown people are lesser than, inferior in temperament, honor, duty, moral principles, fairness… when events often show the very opposite to be true.
jcrumb: I hear ya, but if everyone refused to file or pay, it would make little difference. They’d just get the money they need by printing it along from the international bankers. We’re nothing but their hired thugs anyway.

How about war crimes trials for the Bush Administration and their cronies at Blackwater?
—————————
TOugh luck. Madame Pelosy says: impeachment is off the table. Hope you are not one of those voting for the Dems. They are complicit in everything.
AMERICAN lives lost on 911 were worth more each because it was only 3000. This is considered RETAIL killing. Iraqis are being killed WHOLESALE.
Also people who don’t have clean water, working sewers, and insignificant electrical power have less to live for so they are worth less. The fact that the US did this to Iraq is just a logical cost saving measure like outsourcing and withholding medical care from the poor.
I know this may sound crass to those of you that have not been sufficiently trained in trickle down, conservative, Republican economics, however this will all be forgotten when the greed based utopia is fully implemented.
The bastards of the govorporation have tried to remove all of the rights of the citizens; they’ve removed habeus corpus, thrust protesters into pens, demolished the voting process, sent recruiters into high schools w/ billions of dollars to back them, waged war on foreign nations, etc. etc. etc. What’s left to do? Well, there are about 200 million guns in the United States, & the bastards in the govorporation haven’t stripped us of the Second Amendment yet. Let’s all go out & buy more guns. I’ve been thinking about a nice rifle since Blackwater tried to establish a base in Portrero, Ca. We all buy more guns, then we join the NRA, & then we show up at some of these protests armed. We should be allowed to assemble as the Constitution permits. We should be able to set up our own “free speech zones” by cordoning off several blocks of city streets w/ rifles in hand. The Constitution grants us the right to assemble, the right to own & bear arms; let’s do it! The neo-Hazlitts in the govorporation know what it takes to be a hard ass, a tough guy, so let’s show them just what tough guy means. Tough guy means that we will take them to court; tough guy means that we won’t cooperate & be herded into their microscopic “free speech zones,” and tough guy means that we show up at protests legally armed because we are the standing militia for the United States.
Now pop me another beer & pass the chips ‘n dip.
The Iraqis are a proud people. The response of the man who refused payment in effect says
” Shove it up your —”
We will roast for our disgraceful behavior.
The 20,000 for each victim seems like a slap in the face on Blackwater’s part! In fact, 100,000 wouldn’t be enough for me. That money isn’t going to replace a loved one that these thugs callously blew away. These criminals need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. They were nothing but a pack of trigger happy wolves. They are obviously not stable enough to be carrying a firearm around. Blackwater should be held liable! If we had a responsible government in Washington they would terminate these people’s contracts instantly.
Horray for the people who refused the blood money.

Pay attention to Buzzy and Cookie Krongard’s connection to Blackwater. Buzzy’s connection to 9/11-related insider trading and to the CIA is especially significant.

Poor kid. Bush and Cheney shot him, blasted holes in him and scattered pieces of his flesh and blood on the street, cut him down when he was beginning to live. Then these monsters left his parents and family with the anguish and the pain. The Govt Officials are paying Blackwater, who has murdered these Iraqi Children in the name of the United States against the will of the People.

jcrumb - For the first time in a long time I actually owe taxes this year and I was HAPPY because I could participate in the war tax boycott. Then, I received my letter about the stimulus payments to be sent in May. It instructed me that all I have to do to receive my $1500 (for two adults and one child) is to file my 2007 taxes. That is more than I owe. I don’t think it was an accident that they scheduled those payments in May since everyone will have to have filed by then (or an extension, but still have to pay at that time). Such clever little devils…
Shenonymous, I was being factitious about owning an SUV. I do not own or drive one. Sometimes I have a sarcastic streak.
Unfortunately, a great number of us Americans do not see any reason other than our own wallets to conserve energy. I am not one of them and try to reduce my carbon footprint and fossil fuel usage whenever possible for the good of the planet and the good of the country.
If killing innocent people including children is what our tax dollars are used for, perhaps it’s just as well that the U.S. is collapsing financially.
Will the filthy war profiteers and neocons buy up everything after its collapse? God knows they’ve made enough money to from their evil war profiteering. They sold their souls for the dollar long ago.

thank U for giving us the figures on the judgement aginst Iran for the death of our occupiers in Lebanon: 11 million/killed soldier. Of couse it was afed judge and not a Lebanese or Iranian judge; also why not rule Hezbolah was to pay? Could it be we can’t cease their assets?
Oh well great comparisons on life’s value depending who’s killed and where.

SEAWEED—I SEE A SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE BIBLICAL WHORE OF BABYLON (aka Beast, 666) AND THE CORPORATION, not necessarily the US, although it’s hard to tell them apart. Ancient peoples probably thought and dreamed in pictures and symbols much more than moderns. Paul’s dream may have been his subconscious working out of the cultural and anthropological situation that the middle easterners found themselves in during Roman occupation and commercial domination. Many ironies associated with such a conjecture…such as the evangelicals unquestioning support of the corporatocracy. Also, the view that the RELIGION of the west and others is, by all measures of daily attention and observance, BUSINESS. The Deceiver is alive and well on Madison Avenue. Be sure to read Thom Hartmann’s “Breaking the Code”, and there is a great old book by William I. Thompson, “Evil and World Order”, if you can find it.

Giving the above ststement, how could Washington fire, punish financially, or prosecute Blackwater for committing much lesser crimes of the same nature?
