Jubilee USA Statement on First Day of G20 Indonesia Finance Minister Meeting

WASHINGTON

G20 finance ministers and central bank governors finished their first day of two day meetings on Thursday under the Indonesian Presidency on COVID response, recovery and preparing for future crises.

Eric LeCompte, Executive Director of the religious development group Jubilee USA Network and a United Nations finance expert who monitored G20 meetings since 2010, releases the following statement on the conclusion of the first day of the two day G20 meetings:

"We are watching closely the conversations on debt among the G20 finance ministers.

"It's clear that the G20 has an opportunity to say and do more on debt that could help stop a coming wave of defaults.

"Unfortunately we don't know if the G20 will step up and address the global crisis during these meetings.

"Finance ministers are focusing on several issues at the G20 meetings including pandemic response, development aid, inflation, debt crisis and distribution of vaccines.

"We pray that G20 leaders will demonstrate more ambition during these meetings to deal with growing health and economic crises that most countries in the world are facing."
