350 Action Keeps Score on Climate Record of 2020 Candidates

New ‘scorecard’ tracks candidates’ views on pressing political issues related to climate change

WASHINGTON

Today, 350 Action, an organization working to shift the politics of climate change in the United States, unveiled a 'scorecard' tracking the positions of progressive 2020 candidates on climate action. Specifically, the scorecard tracks candidates' positions on three matters of critical importance for any elected official to effectively address climate change: 1) support for a Green New Deal; 2) opposition to new fossil fuel extraction projects; and 3) refusal to accept money from fossil fuel companies.

"We're making it clear where 2020 candidates land on the policies and practices essential to any meaningful attempt at addressing the climate crisis," said 350 Action Executive Director May Boeve. "Stopping new fossil fuel projects, supporting a Green New Deal, and saying no to Big Oil money are the standards by which we should measure any presidential hopeful. Bold climate action that strengthens our economy and communities is not only what most Americans want -- it's also the reasonable and responsible way forward."

According to recent polling from YouGov Blue, 56% of respondents expressed support for policies that would prevent new fossil fuel projects from being built in favor of renewable energy options. Additionally, 59% of respondents showed support a Green New Deal that invests in low-income communities and supports renewable energy infrastructure, and 49% supported a pledge from candidates to refuse fossil fuel PAC donations with many (33%) undecided.

From the streets to the ballot box, 350 Action is fighting for progressive climate champions who are willing to stand up for climate justice, good green jobs, just immigration policies, healthcare for all, and human rights.
