"Automatic voter registration will have an incredible impact on the health of our state's democracy"

Annapolis, MD

This morning, following yesterday's vote by the Maryland legislature to become the 11th state in the country to adopt automatic voter registration, the Patriotic Millionaires of Maryland released the following statement:

"Every citizen deserves to have their voice heard, and every citizen deserves to have a say in how their government is run. The Maryland legislature's decision to join the wave of states passing automatic voter registration will have an incredible impact on the health of our state's democracy, and by passing this bill, those lawmakers have shown that they are truly champions of democracy. We urge Governor Hogan to follow their example and sign this bill into law immediately.

Our country is more bitterly divided than ever, and money in politics and voter suppression have made millions of Americans and thousands of Marylanders feel like they cannot participate in, or even trust, their government. This vote was a massive step forward for our state towards breaking down barriers and keeping our democracy thriving. We hope that the 25 other states considering similar changes will follow Maryland's lead."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
