The For the People Act Is Our Best Chance to Save American Democracy

"It is no exaggeration to say that without immediate and forceful action by Congress, without HR 1, our democracy may be entirelydismantled."

WASHINGTON

This evening, the US House of Representatives passed the For the People Act, HR 1, a sweeping democracy reform bill that contains anti-corruption, voter protection, transparency, and election reform provisions.

In response, Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, former managing director of BlackRock, Inc., and author of the upcoming book Tax the Rich, issued the following statement:

"Fresh off of an election cycle in which high voter turnout and civic engagement led to a resounding Republican defeat across the country, the Republican party has indicated that they see democracy itself as a threat to their political power. Republican legislators in states across the nation have introduced in this year alone over 250 bills designed to restrict voting access and weaken democratic safeguards.
Our democracy was already on life support before this onslaught. It is no exaggeration to say that without immediate and forceful action by Congress, without HR 1, our democracy may be entirely dismantled. The For the People Act is our last, best chance to save American democracy by correcting the fundamental issues that have plagued our democratic system for decades, and restoring free and fair access to the ballot box to every single American."

The Patriotic Millionaires is a group of high-net worth Americans who share a profound concern about the destabilizing level of inequality in America. Our work centers on the two things that matter most in a capitalist democracy: power and money. Our goal is to ensure that the country's political economy is structured to meet the needs of regular Americans, rather than just millionaires. We focus on three "first" principles: a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens.
