MoveOn Reacts to Senate Parliamentarian’s Decision Rejecting Minimum Wage Increase in COVID Relief Package: "Eliminate the Filibuster”"

Statement of Rahna Epting, executive director of MoveOn:

“An unelected parliamentarian shouldn’t be able to decide if 32 million Americans get a long overdue pay raise or not. Nor should Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans, who have stood in the way of this needed raise for years.

“We need a $15 minimum wage in this country and we need it now.

“It is long past time that Senate Democrats eliminate the filibuster and do what they were elected to - deliver bold solutions to address this nation’s problems.

“The American public can not afford more obstruction or half measures. Mitch McConnell blocked nearly every piece of legislation that the House passed last year and with desperately needed relief on the line, we can’t afford to let him do it again.

“The Senate is broken. Republicans broke it. Now Democrats must fix it. That starts with eliminating the filibuster.”

MoveOn is where millions mobilize for a better society—one where everyone can thrive. Whether it’s supporting a candidate, passing legislation, or changing our culture, MoveOn members are committed to an inclusive and progressive future. We envision a world marked by equality, sustainability, justice, and love. And we mobilize together to achieve it.
