SOIL's Dr. Kramer Protests Trump Speech at Davos
Davos - SOIL stands in solidarity with Haiti and the countries throughout Africa that President Trump disparaged in the racist remarks he made earlier this month. SOIL’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Sasha Kramer, walked out of President Trump’s speech at Davos to raise her voice in opposition to the dangerous rhetoric and racist policies of this administration towards the people of Haiti.
In SOIL’s 11-year history we have worked in Haiti alongside some of the strongest, bravest, and kindest people we have ever known. It is our privilege to work in this beautiful, unique, revolutionary nation — not the other way around. We were particularly appalled that a world leader would have the insensitivity to make these comments on the eve of the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands in Haiti and created the conditions necessitating the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program.
The words of one man cannot erase this country’s history of boldly changing the face of the world. In an interview earlier this week, Dr. Kramer stated that, “to me, Haiti is anything but that. Haiti has always been a global example. Haiti was the country that led the fight against slavery and colonialism, and I think Haiti will continue to be an example.”
We stand alongside the Haitian people calling for humanity over racism and hate, and we will not falter in our fight for justice in Haiti and throughout the world.
FRIENDS: Help Us Fight
Independent journalism has become the last firewall against government and corporate lies. Yet, with frightening regularity, independent media sources are losing funding, closing down or being blacked out by Google and Facebook. Never before has independent media been more endangered. If you believe in Common Dreams, if you believe in people-powered independent media, please support us now and help us fight—with truths—against the lies that would smother our democracy. Please help keep Common Dreams alive and growing. Thank you. -- Craig Brown, Co-founder
