DENVER - Every four years, liberal activists follow political power brokers and the world media to the Democratic and Republican party conventions, filling the streets with spirited protest against war, corporate domination and environmental destruction.
This year there's a twist: Many protesters will demonstrate outside a convention that will nominate the first black major-party presidential candidate in history, who is opposed to the Iraq war and was once a community organizer and activist in Chicago.
But Barack Obama will not get a pass from demonstrators at the Democratic National Convention. Activists say they are wary of his shift to the center since he secured the nomination last month.
"We're hoping he can remember his roots and, through these mass rallies and protests, we can move him," said Glenn Spagnuolo, a spokesman for an umbrella group coordinating the Denver protests, provocatively named Re-create '68.
In Denver as well as in St. Paul, Minn., the site of the Republican National Convention, activists are already skirmishing with city officials over where and when they will be allowed to demonstrate. But different dynamics are forming. In Minnesota, activists are eager to contrast their views with the Republican Party's pro- business agenda and support for the Iraq war.
"People are coming from around the country to stand side by side and show how angry Americans are at the state of the country," said Jess Sundin, spokeswoman for the group coordinating protests in Minnesota.
As many as 50,000 people are expected in the Twin Cities -- so many that activists are asking farmers to let demonstrators camp in their fields.
"Why go to Denver if you can be here protesting the important political issues being raised this year: the war in Iraq and the Republican way?" Sundin said.
In Denver, where activists say as many as 25,000 may show up, some demonstrators are taking pains to explain that they are not against Obama.
"People are looking to him to end this militarism, end this assault on civil liberties," said Carolyn Bninski of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. "A lot of people feel he will make a lot of changes."
In recent years, protesters have caused headaches for cities holding political conventions. Authorities have sometimes taken controversial steps to keep demonstrators from disrupting the proceedings.
In 2000, the Los Angeles Police Department broke up a politically themed rock concert adjacent to the Democratic convention at Staples Center, using pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd of 8,000 after a small group of anarchists pelted them with glass bottles, concrete and metal rods.
The city paid $4.1 million in lawsuit settlements with demonstrators who were injured or contended they were arrested without cause during other protests.
About 90% of the New York Police Department's 1,700 arrests of activists during the 2004 Republican convention resulted in acquittals or dismissed charges, spurring allegations that the department had preemptively arrested activists to cut down on protests.
Denver and St. Paul have been bracing for controversy. Denver officials won't talk about police tactics, but they promise to respect activists' rights to demonstrate legally.
"It is a tricky balancing act to accommodate the interests of everyone who is coming to Denver to participate in convention-related activities," said Denver City Atty. David Fine. "We are creating an environment which will maximize the ability of people to speak."
In both cities, the local chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union are suing on behalf of protesters, contending that the cities are forcing the protesters into areas that activists have dubbed "freedom cages" -- which are out of earshot of the delegates -- and allowing marches only during hours when the conventions are not in session.
St. Paul City Atty. John Choisaid the city had already altered the parade schedule and mapped the route to get marchers "within the very shadows" of the arena where the convention will meet.
"I honestly don't know how to make these folks happy," Choi said.
Mark Silverstein, legal director of the ACLU of Colorado, attributed the restrictions to increased sensitivity about security since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He said federal officials had initially labeled the parade route in Denver confidential because of national security concerns.
Spagnuolo, the Denver protest organizer, cited Saul Alinsky, a legendary Chicago organizer who was a major influence on Obama, to explain why liberal groups needed to protest at the convention nominating the Illinois senator.
Spagnuolo said Alinsky argued that activists would have a better chance of achieving their goals if they pressured people sympathetic to their cause. "You protest the person closest to your beliefs," he said.

Show AllHate to say this, but feel I need to.Has everyone forgotten that Obama is only the PRESUMED nominee? They(the media) have done a bang up job on this one! Hillary Clinton still has her delegates(at least the ones they didn't give to Obama)and has no yet conceded her right to have her name on the ticket, provided Dean and the DNC don't take her name off the first ballot. The Obama machine has all the plans laid,it would be wonderful to stop his train in the station, and nominate the real nominee in this election. I've left the party because of the corruption, just couldn't stand it any longer.I'm a proud Indy and will vote Hillary on the day.Know many think this is throwing your vote away, but I refuse to be coerced into voting for the party not the nominee,as if only the party cronies know how we should think. It's time for a new Democratic party, the one we have now is only a thinly disguised republican in BLUE clothing!
Obama has already stated his pro-war (not anti-war) position, including increasing US military aggression in Afghanistan.
Obama has embraced the Republican "faith-based initiatives" that are, at best, highly problematic.
Obama has embraced the anti-poor policies that we currently have, which have been so damaging to the economy, quality of life, etc. Now, this -- especially workfare/welfare "reform" policies -- has not made it into the public forum, so I should say a few words about it. Conservatives think poverty is a matter of behavior rather than economics, and progressives evidently agree that it is acceptable to "amend" one's human and legal rights solely on the grounds of economic status. By doing this, however, we've also ignored the impact of mandatory workfare on the entire working class. Isn't hard to figure this out: We've lost hundreds of thousands of jobs, and at the same time, hundreds of thousands of people were removed from welfare rolls. Government provides businesses with financial incentives to use workfare labor. Many family-supporting jobs were broken down into pt. time/min. wage labor, for which workfare labor is used -- outsourcing, without the expense of moving jobs to foreign countries for cheap labor. Businesses will lay off a chink of its workforce, quickly replacing them with workfare labor at a fraction of the wages. Some of the laid-off workers end up with no choice other than workfare, replacing other workers, and on it goes. Workfare has proved to be a powerful tool for breaking unions and suppressing wages. Obama recently stated his intentions to "enforce" mandatory workfare, which, in fact, has been stringently enforced since 1997. We can only wonder what his plans are.
And the list goes on.

We wanted the democrats to end the war and voted for them so they could do so. What makes you think the democrats are going to really listen? Oh, they will say that they are listening, that they are for the people, that they have our interests at heart. Then they turn around and suddenly impeachment is off the table, the wars are funded, not just several times, but above the level requested; investigations happen, but any articles of impeachment are pigeon holed into do-nothing committees.
Forget the democrats and their evil twins, the republicans. Vote third party. (Green is good. Green is real good.)
...will nominate the first black major-party presidential candidate in history,...
-As if color mattered more than policy positions. Who cares what color the candidate is? Would you vote for Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice or Colin Powell because they are Black?
...who is opposed to the Iraq war...
-this is one of my personal favorites, the one about he is opposed to a war he always votes to fund. You figure.
...once a community organizer and activist in Chicago.
-I am so cynical of Obama I doubt this was even genuine and was done in order to be able to put it on his resume so you would buy it
...taking pains to explain that they are not against Obama.
-why not?
organizer who was a major influence on Obama, to explain why liberal groups needed to protest at the convention
-why is an explanation even needed? Isn't it obvious enough?
I have always known that the capitalistic system of USA is in fact the sister of the BAD form of communism, the one that want to take over the World by Force, [not the Chinese form of communism] 9/11 is now being used by the Bush gouvrnement as an Excuse for their continue blocking of the the Right of Freedom of Speech and Peacefull demonstration. Bush should be TRIED by the World Court, for Acts Committed Against Humanity.
So for all you Obama supporters out there, you know, the ones who feel that he can be influenced by popular pressure, why not make a test of this?
Either Obama refuses to speak at any event where protesters attempting "free speech" are forced into "freedom cages", or face reality and admit that Obama is a fascist.
There is no excuse for this. The DNC and RNC have identical approaches to preventing free speech at their conventions. There is no "lesser evil" to endorse.
This is what happened today in Denver at the McBush town meeting.
http://oakcreekforum.blogspot.com/2008/07/mc-bush-unleashes-his-attack-d...
What is needed is not a convention protest but a Gnerela Sketri (unscrammble) across the nation until these crooks and liars are run out of office and sent to the ICC for a trial as war criminals and traitors to the citizens of the United States.
Galen is right on...first time I"ve read someone else who recognized that agent-provoceteur engendered riot in Seattle. There was never hint of it in the media. As for the Denver Convention, remember that the Denver cops who murdered young Jeff Truax a few years ago, in what can only be described as a thrill killing were not only not prosecuted by the DA-now-governor, but were promoted after their cowardly heinous act. The same sort of lame-brained fascist stooge bastards who gave us the Ludlow Mine Massacre will damned sure turn their ignorance and that Raytheon ray gun on a penned-in crowd of innocent civilians. What is not known is whether they will start the riot ( after the orchestrated provocation)by shooting pepper bullets at the folks and turning on the ray gun or vice-versa...either way look for a lot of dead and crippled citizens when the smoke clears.
So he was influenced by Saul Alinski and he organized the poor in Chicago--it sure looks like the point of that was to fully understand the progressive movements so they wouldn't get in his way when he was ready to join the ruling elite.
Bfiresen; he moved to the "center" by 1--voting to give the telecvoms a free pass and thus also end an investigation of just who and what the Cheney administration was spying on--and signalling that the Constitution is not important and can continue to violated regularly--2--told AIPAC that Israel is always right and any violence in the Middle East is the fault of the Arabs and the Bush administration screwed up by attacking Iraq instead of Iran; 3--told the Miami Cuban mafia that he'll continue the stupid embargo against Cuba; and 4--suggested that his attacks on NAFTA were mere "overheated rhetoric." So what's left? What's the difference between him and McCain? Oh yeah--abortion, Maybe. Maybe you do need to think about where you get your news...
wrensis: "recreate '68" works for you, huh? Is that because you get a government check as an agent provacateur, or are you just too young to remember '68? What happened was that young protestors, mostly angry about the continuing Vietnam War, were violently attacked by police and then 8 of them were arrested. They were eventually aquitted, I believe...there was no effect on the war, which went on for another 5 to 8 years. Why would you want a repeat? The police have more violent toys now, notably tasers. This is your idea of fun? Or you are naive enough to imagine it will have a positive effect? The media is ALWAYS on the side of the powers that be, and they wil cover the "riots" in such a way that it appears to be a bunch of crazed hooligans, and this will be used to discredit Obama, the Democrats and the Left, as well as the antiwar community. Rush Limbaugh begged his followers to go to Denver to make sure there would be riots--does this tell you amything?
It doesn't matter who you vote for... the Government gets in.
I don't understand the logic of protesting the Democrats more than the Republicans. The Republicans are worse on just about every issue.
Our priority right now should be keeping McCain away from the out of control executive power, lest he attack Iran. We should be making McCain look bad and unpopular because he is worse. Start fighting Obama 10 minutes after he is sworn in. But before then, make sure he's the one that gets sworn in.
I will vote for Obama because he's better than McCain. I didn't say he was great, but he is better than McCain by almost any measure. I live in Boulder, 30 minutes away from Denver. I will not be going to those protests.
"He campaigned on "Change" and now is the center of "Politics as usual"
Really!? I guess you are reading different articles than I. But please, exercise your right to free speech, because if Barack loses or for some reason we have another fascist administration like this one...it will be the LAST time you get to exercise ANY freedom.
Why should Obama get a free pass? He campaigned on "Change" and now is the center of "Politics as usual"
It will be even harder for them to shut out demonstrators with the new choice of 75,000 seat Invesco Field in Denver instead of the Pepsi Center. "Recreate 68" works for me.
"Voting Democrat is litterally killing us because we end up with no representation at all."
Uh, well, I agree, the Democrats have dropped the ball quite often over the last ten years but who should we vote for then? A Republican? Ralph Nader?
I have the utmost respect for Ralph but you know as well as I do there is no way he could govern this complex, polarized nation.
Barack Obama is the breath of fresh air this nation needs to heal and get on with the important and trying days ahead. And the fact is he is intelligent and articulate. Something we've been lacking for 8 years.
There will be many sacrifices ahead, let us rejoice in the fact that for once we really DO have a choice for president! Yes, Obama will NOT get a free pass but he could use support rather than anger thrown at him as he embarks on the greatest challenge any president has had to face short of General Washington, Abraham Lincoln or Franklin Roosevelt.
Better to vent pent up anger at those who put us here.
Yes, it is important as never before in the history of our nation that the people use the only power that is left to them: THEMSELVES.
People, this is the moment that "WE THE PEOPLE" step forth and take back our country. A million screaming in St. Paul and many more in the streets of all the cities and towns. Viva La Revolucion!! No more trust to the two-headed RepubliCratic Monster.
To Galen ... the 'Atlanta Olympics' bomb was not anonymous. It was done by a white guy, a radical anti-abortion type. It was part of a series of bombs in Atlanta and Birmingham that otherwise targeted a gay-lesbian night club and a couple of abortion clinics.
There was never anything in that case that connected to the authorities in any way. In fact since the Chamber of Commerce types in Atlanta were the ones who first begged for the Olympics to come to Atlanta, then who wanted to use it to promote the city, having a bomb go off set by some right-wing nut was about the last thing on earth that they wanted. Its completely insane to in anyway suggest that it was in anyway the work of anyone except a few crackpots.
Yes, there is police survelience in Denver. They've put up new cameras around downtown. And every Thursday when a local group planning protests meets in a coffee house, you can walk around and spot the plainclothes detectives watching the meeting.
But, I really don't see the point in creating a bunch of total nonsense about microwave devices or the Atlanta Olympics bomb. Is your goal to try to make sure you scare as many people off from protesting as possible?
Oh gawd, the "we'll hold Obama's feet to the fire" nonsense is back again.
How's that working on FISA? When the expectations of his supporters conflict with the telecoms that have given about $270,000 to his campaigns conflict, which is winning out? How well are you able to hold even 'candidate' Obama's feet to the fire? And note carefully that you have far more influence over a candidate than an elected President.
Or, along the same lines, how successful have you been at holding the Democratic leadership in Congress' feet to the fire? Gotten the war money stopped yet? Gotten impeachment yet?
This line is a huge con. You, as a citizen, get one mechanism every four years to 'hold a politicians feet to the fire'. Its called voting in an election. In what passes for Democracy in modern America, that's the only chance you get. Between elections, the politicians disappear into Washington and meet with the lobbyists with the bags of cash and they don't care what you think.
So, you get one imput into this government once every four years. That's your VOTE! The Democrats are trying hard to con you into giving it away for nothing. Then they'll ignore you and call you 'idiot liberals' and wish they could get you arrested for loitering up until the next election when they again have to pretend they give a damn.
Don't give away your vote. Its all you got.
Come to Denver! Its important to protest here.
The reason its important to protest the Democrats is because they are the party of the BIG LIE. Its important to reveal that to as many people as possible. A big protest here in Denver won't be the magic answer that does that, but its a good step.
The Republicans have long been the party of the rich and powerful. And they are basically proud of that. They don't tend to hide it very well.
But today's Democrats have become a second party of the rich and powerful. To do that6, they must LIE. They pretend to be the opposition to the other party of the rich and powerful, but they really aren't. Their words say they are an opposition. But their votes and their bills say they are not.
So, one thing we must do is to point out this BIG LIE to as many people as possible. The protests are just one way of doing that.
The other thing we must do is we must create a political movement that represents our interests. The Democrats lie and pretend to represent us, but they don't. That means we must build such a movement for ourselves. Voting Democrat is litterally killing us because we end up with no representation at all. Just a bunch of liars and frauds who said they'd represent us, then don't.
The Democratic convention is a good place to do this. Its a good place to come together. We can give physical and vocal expression of our frustration at always being lied to and conned by the Democrats. And as we come together we can start to build the political movement that will represent us in the future.
Go to St.Paul if you want. That's not a bad idea. But, if you really want to start changing things, come to Denver.
The opening paragraphs betray the bias in the piece. Why on earth would the color of the skin of the nominee lead to people not demanding better policies from our government?
When we breath polluted air, the color of the skin of the President doesn't matter.
When we lose our children to war, the color of the skin of the President doesn't matter.
When we lose our rights, the color of the skin of the President doesn't matter.
You have to be deep in to Democratic-party-think to even write these opening paragraphs. For anyone who doesn't drink the Democratic Party koolaid, they sound like nonsense.
The Twin Cities should be where people scream how fed up they are with the near-fascist, pro-business, pro-war, "subjugate the rest of the world so fat cats can drive Hummers" right wing Republican party and all of their lies, profiteering and above all...TREASON!!
50,000!? There ought to be a million screaming for the heads of the likes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Kristol, and Wolfowitz....among many others!
Forget Nader, he's a wonderful, massively-accomplished leader who we should always respect, but the fact of the matter is, he does not - nor will he any short order of time - have the assemblage of support necessary to ram through the reforms that need to be rammed through. Barack does, and if we hold not just his feet, but his whole being right up close to the fire, he will eventually start moving in the direction we want. If and when he is sworn in, that's when we begin to demand accountable elections, removal of the electoral college, institution of a national run-off system, universal single-payer health care, and so on and so on. We need to not rest until we have it, and Nader should be right there with us, regardless of who becomes President. He shouldn't disappear into the shadows only to come out again when he can get easy press.
As for Saint Paul: no matter what, there will be chaos. There are just too many pissed off people in this country not to find ourselves in heavy conflict with the powers that be. Our message will get heard in Saint Paul people! My band, Junkyard Empire, and many others including Michael Franti and Spearhead will be playing shows all over the Twin Cities and we hope all you radicals and revolutionaries come out and commune with us!
Viva le revolution in Saint Paul!
"In Denver, where activists say as many as 25,000 may show up, some demonstrators are taking pains to explain that they are not against Obama."
Yes, this is a great strategy....don't make him think you are against him and that he might have to re-think whose interests he should be supporting...just show up and look like you are upset with the current US conditions but are not going to do anything other than march in the streets and SOUND PISSED. That sounds like a great threat to McCain.
VOTE NADER...THE GUY WHO IS GOING TO DO WHAT HE SAYS!!!
And no doubt the FBI/CIA COINTELPRO agent provocatuers will be in place to incite violence and smash a few Starbucks and McDonalds franchises that will discredit the entire protest movement. Again.
Anyone remember how the 'authorities' behaved during the WTO 'Battle in Seattle'? Wanna bet we will see a repeat, this time with the new, can't-wait-to-fry-me-some-lefty-pinko-protesters Microwave Area Denial Systems the US government just showed off on 60 minutes?
And I would be willing to bet that there will be an anonymous 'Atlanta Olympics' style back-pack bomb thrown in for good measure, probably aimed at McCain, but not close enough to actually hurt him (maybe kill a few US citizens, just to get the 'anti-terrorist' blood lust up again), in order to give 'Bomb Bomb' McCain the 'needed boost' his PR flack Mr. Black unwisely let slip out.
This is just nothing more than a part in the continued charade that leads you by the nose to think you actually have a choice.
I sure hope we enjoy the "free speech zone", just east of the airport behind the chain link fences.
Waste of time.
