London police have announced a ban on anti-war campaigners hoping to protest against President George Bush's visit to Downing Street this Sunday. The Whitehall ban has been immediately condemned as a "totalitarian act" by the playwright Harold Pinter, while Stop the War organisers are urging people to defy it and to demonstrate nearby in Parliament Square.
"In what is supposed to be a free country the Stop the War Coalition has every right to express its views peacefully and openly. This ban is outrageous and makes the term 'democracy' laughable," Pinter said today.
Lindsey German, a leader of the Stop the War Coalition, said: "It seems that when George W Bush visits this country traditional rights of assembly are to be removed from the people. We are calling on those who care for our democratic rights to come to Parliament Square at 5pm on Sunday 15 June. Some of those who signed statements accusing Bush of war crimes will be leading this protest.
"George Bush has been dictating British foreign policy for many years. Now it appears his security services are determining our rights of protest. This is a disgrace and we will challenge the ban."
The anti-nuclear campaign CND said it believed the British government was allowing security operations to be directed by White House officials. Previous demonstrations have been allowed along Whitehall, but Bush's presence in Downing Street - he is due to have dinner with Gordon Brown - means protesters are to be banned from a police 'exclusion zone'.
Kate Hudson, CND chair, warned that protesters might ignore the police. She said: "Previous attempts to deprive us of our rights to protest have come to nothing. In February 2003 we were told we couldn't go on the grass in Hyde Park and what happened? Two million people joined us in Hyde Park to oppose the war on Iraq.
"Last October we were told we couldn't protest in Parliament Square to demand the withdrawal of British troops. What happened then? The morning of the protest we were given the go-ahead. We have a proud record of peaceful democratic protest and we mean to continue - lift the ban now."

Show AllYes, watch V for Vendetta a few times. It's time for that kind
of action against Bush Inc. But the major action should be in
the USA. We need to be taking like action in every city in the
world when Bush sits down to suck face with Brown. It would be
nice to see 100,000 + Brits taking it to the streets when Bush
Inc gets there. Just block every way in and out. Demand he be
put on trial for war crimes.
B-U-S-H spells Bush. H-S-U-B spells Bush backwards. Is it okay to just protest against Hsub? Given the stupidity of the media, it might take them until the end of the protest before anyone figures it out. By then the pictures will have been sent around the world. Why not start with a giant sign in red, white and blue that says 'We hate Hsub.'
For anyone who considers going;
European Convention on Human Rights:
Article 11: Freedom of Assembly
(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and to freedom of association with others, including the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.
(2) No restrictions shall be placed on the exercise of these rights other than such as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.
This Article shall not prevent the imposition of lawful restrictions on the exercise of these rights by members of the armed forces, of the police or of the administration of the state.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Article 20
(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
I for one will probably go to London and embrace my right of Freedom to peacefully assemble (although this may result in me being arrested).
As for all the Anti British remarks, I'm surprised I thought the readers of this website were better informed, the rich and powerful (of any country) don't care what the people of that country thinks as long as it doesn't threaten their wealth and power, the powerful elites of the UK are worried that members of the population may act in a manner that may threaten their power (by protesting) so theirfore the action has been made illegal, this is essentially the same script played out in every country in the western world and most countries elsewhere. Discussions by Noam Chomsky can be found on the Internet, may help those who do not understand what I am talking about.
ColdWarbaby
cheers for the heads up i will certainly take a look at the petition...
congractulations on an interesting website also by the way!
yes indeed the main thrust of the objects here in Europe regarding the invasion of iraq was the fact that according to U.N. rules it was actually illegal
which shows right away that outside of the US the UN itself is allready a cherished institution...and as long as the USA considers itself above the law
it will remain etc etc etc..it's perhaps interesting to note that the argument against the invasion of iraq is not that it was the wrong thing to do..it was and is that it was an illegal act....
of course it almost certainly was the wrong thing to do...it's interesting really
in that the UN makes a legal judgement about the invasion rather than a moral one..
USAn,
"The idea of judging an entire people by skin color or facial features was practically unknown before then."
I don't know about that. It appears from some of the latest fossil evidence that the dissapperance of Neanderthal Man coincides with he and Homo-Sapiens coming into contact with each other. It has been endemic in human history. There have been African tribes that fought each other because the other was too black or not black enough. Meso-American Indians fought each other for many reasons including racial differences, or for no reason at all. An entire caste existed (and still does) in India called the "Untouchables" long before any English influence held sway there. I think your argument is a load of nonsense.
While many of Lizard's comments are true they are hardly balanced. To ignore all the England has given to the world in the realm of politics, the rights of man and the restraint of the rule of a monarch, and particularly the rule-of-law, is to ignore a great deal of source from whence our civil liberties flowed. The very civil liberties, whose loss we now bewail.

"i tell you if we really want world peace…the United Nations is the place to go..they have more freedom to act and clout than any individual country.."
There is a petition for UN sanctions against America. Go sign it. I can't put the link up here or I'll be banned. It's happened before. Go to my site and find the link there.

Except for possibly the bit about the Poles and Hitler lizard's remarks seem accurate to me.
It has been said that The British prctically invented racism itself because it needed a jutification for it's brutal mercantilist imperialism. The idea of judging an entire people by skin color or facial features was practically unknown before then.
Sure, the Spanish and Portugese beat the Brits in inventing imperialism, but Spanish imperialism (also mercantilist of course) was justified on theocratic (conversion of the conquered to Catholicism) rather than racist grounds.
Gee! Afraid poor little Georgie's feelings will be hurt? God forbid anyone should see protests!
Haven't we had enough of the Bush administration's overhanded tactics and misdirection. And don't get me started oini their ever-growing list of war crimes. George W. Bush's mere existence is an impediment to freedom and democracy. Let's impeach the fucker now, before he gets away Scot-free.
i tell you if we really want world peace...the United Nations is the place to go..they have more freedom to act and clout than any individual country..
you just have to roll the words round your mouth for couple of minutes..united nations....united nations etc....rome wasn't built in a day..(lol) when it comes to empire building, the United Nations is an empire in nascent form...i know it isn't a popular organisation in the US..but that might be a clue in itself
given time the UN could grow into exactly what it's name suggests...mind you it does smack of socialist ideals...it damn near prevented the invasion of iraq..came damn near..or at least as near as anything did on this planet right now...there were no other significant blocks to the invasion right?
demand that the UN be given greater powers....figure out the rest as we go along...the UK government isn't going to stop the war against terror...but the UN just might...lol i kinda imagine being a sci fi fan that the UN is a real world "Babylon 5" or the closets thing there is ...the fact that the US government hates derides and constantly undermines the UN....has got to be
a bit of a clue....
"Hurry up now Yanks and send us those Ray Guns. Our crowds here are getting just a wee bit too woolly. We must maintain British decorum and show Mr. Bush how proper Empires behave."
"The Brits should arrest Bush and he shoud be extradited to Brattleboro, Vermont."
Better yet, how about the Hague? Brattleboro's too close to those who still support the Chimp and might try to spring him.
I thought the protestors would have better luck in the UK than they have here in America. But the Brits are probably worried for fear that a catastrophe occurs on their ground. Eventually Bush and his gang will probably experience a lack of freedom. What goes around comes around.
Its time to fight back--for what its worth... Tase-away! I wonder if the Queen's men have one of them there Active Denial Systems and some of those KBR camps?... "God saaave 'er..." quoth Rotten.
I hope that this Brit group are very successful with their display of civil disobedience. Show the yanks how it should be done.
For those of you who don't know, Mr. George Fucking Bush is going to retire
to his 90,000acres he purchased in Paraguay . . . .
THINK I'M KIDDING, check the records. THE GREAT AMERICAN FREE PRESS has decided this was not newsworthy.
It's going to take 90,000 acres to hide and protect him.
Wonder how much that costs?

Brits if you shut down the Tube because no stout allowed, stand up and shut that city the hell down.
Germany;warrant for War Crimes, France;warrant for Torture, these are for Rummy perhaps as each Nation in the EU starts to bring charges they'll add a few more names to those warrants.
To borrow the rhyme from 'V for Vendetta': "Remember, remember Eleven September, the Twin Tower treason and plot..."
As for the banning of protesters from demonstrating against Dubya; So much for free speech. Another nail in the coffin of the Magna Carta and all other documents descended from it.
And no one is to look the war criminal thief moron in the eye, and everyone must say his name at least three times per day, and everyone must raise their left arms in salute when his 4 mile-long motorcade passes, and everyone must supply a DNA sample to the Pentagon before leaving their homes the morning of his "visit," and all Muslims will be "detained" until he returns to the White House he continues to illegally occupy...
George Bush is destroying the entire planet and the London police do not want people to demonstrate? For the sake of the world they must, as we all do until this excuse for a human is in jail.
When demonstrators are outlawed it's time for outlaws to demonstrate.
The oligarchy is multinational.
Wow, lizard -
Talk about a "fair and balanced" appraisal. Have you ever considered going to work for Fox News? At least there you would have someone "responsible" for spell-checking your writing.
Well Brits why are you acting so superior to us Americans, you are accepting the same contempt that your government is showing you as our government is showing us. Why should let the #1 criminal in the world walk free - you at least have signed on to the World Criminal Court, which our country has not.Your leaders are as responsible for this criminal illigal Iraq war.
While we are at it just why is Blair walking free and not in the dock of the WCC ?
How could the Catholics have welcomed PHONEY TONY into their fould .if he had been a Catholic he should have been excommunicated not welcomed into the fold,or does TONY really represent the new face of FACIAST CATHOLICISM the Christian soldier set to continue the immoral crusades to steel all Arab lands ?
The brits are responsable for most of the strife in the world today. They cooked up the borders that perpetuate conflict, they stole from the hungry to give to themselves, they built an empire by force and then excused it by telling themselves they had a duty to bring civilization to others at any cost (white man's burden). They are responsable for pushing Poland to refuse to negotiate over Danzig with Hitler, and hence World War II. They are the ones among the Europeans who supported Bush. I could go on. The brits have been ,and are still, a disgrace. Why assume that they will behave well? White= good. Non-white = less than white. Just like US history. Two of a kind.
I expect the ever intrepid George Monbiot to lead a large band of freedom fighters against this fascist dictat. From the indicators I read, the UK is going to hell in a handbasket because of Blair, Bush, and Brown policies. If ever a challenge was issued by a government to its populace daring it to go against its dictat, this is it.
I have spent most of the afternoon reading Kucinich's articles of impeachment. It reaffirms what thousands of us have been repeatedly writing and blogging and trying to bring to the attention of our alleged representatives for years. Most of our efforts have either been ignored or denied by said alleged representatives.
I hope his report puts impeachment squarely "on the table" at last. Perhaps this report could also give us a good idea of an excellent vice president for Mr. Obama.
You know, I'd expect this kind of crap in America, but in another country, Bush can exert his "influence" and ban peaceful demonstrations there too??
1) He's got something to hide in his home country
2) He's got something to hide FROM EVERYONE ELSE ON THE GLOBE
For shame, Britain. Don't bend to foreign dictators and throw the criminal out.
The Brits should arrest Bush and he shoud be extradited to Brattleboro, Vermont.
Britain should drop the "Great" for their name. There is nothing "great" about Britain.
Ever see "V for vendetta, the film? If not..do...
if this is the kind of "democracy" shrub is exporting, it's no wonder the iraqis aren't so keen on buying it.
...it's a fucking outrage, isn't it? When you think of all the dead British and American forces thanks to Bush and Cheney's war based on lies...and now the London police and British government have the fucking gall to BAN a peaceful demonstration--just like that!
Why, oh why does this fucking asshole Bush get such royal treatment abroad!? Does anybody in the entire world have the guts to give Bush/Cheney the serious smackdown they so seriously deserve?
...certainly not in the British government of Blair and now Brown...the British government has always throughout history been a force of oppression and capitulation to royalty, and in this tragic instance to corporate fascism. No apologies, no discussion, just a command: "when Bush comes to town, stay at home, observe your bellybutton and SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Dear British Bush/Cheney haters: I implore you to TAKE A STAND AND VIGOROUSLY DEMONSTRATE AGAINST BUSH/CHENEY--despite this fascist act by the police against your civil rights!!! If you don't fight for your rights, they will be taken from you, I guarantee you that!
I think once he is out of office he is going to have to stay hidden. They wont be able to always afford top security whereever he goes and I suspect he is going to be hounded in public should he dare to appear there.
Cant imagine him going on the lecture circuit though.
Too difficult having someone constantly speaking to him in his ear piece.
England is just a lapdog of America anyway. They need to change their flag.
England will do whatever bush says - period. That wimp Tony Blair sold the whole country down the river. There is no 'England', no 'Great Britain', and no 'United Kingdom' or whatever the latest name of their country is. It's just an annex of America now.
Any plan to "withdraw from Iraq" that does not forcefully withdraw all but for the military evacuation essential foreign civilians first is demagoguery. One more Fallujah and the new U.S. president must send troops back in or be impeached! Ergo both Obama and McCain are demagogues of the worst kind.
And I thought the West was the beacon of freedom....HAHAHAHA!
IMPEACH NOW!.. Kucinich's full speech....

We are banned here, why not continue the trends over there? Georgie likes his freedom from reality.
