Groups Launch Weeklong 'Fix Democracy Now' Campaign

Candidates across the country respond to voter demand to present plans to fix democracy

WASHINGTON

This week, Every Voice, End Citizens United, MoveOn.org, and over a dozen progressive organizations launched a weeklong 'Fix Democracy Now' campaign to encourage political leaders and candidates across the country to campaign on plans to make democracy work for everyone including reducing the influence of big donors, upholding access to the ballot, and drawing fair district lines.

The 'Fix Democracy Now' week is taking place from Sunday, July 29 to Saturday, August 4, during which time the groups, representing millions of Americans, are encouraging activists to ask candidates running at every level of elected office from city hall to Congress to campaign on their plans to fix democracy.

As concerns about the state of our democracy continue to increase in urgency in the lead up to the 2018 midterms, candidates plan to hold campaign events and take to social media to show there are leaders dedicated to fixing democracy. You can follow what activists and candidates are saying with #FixDemocracyNow.

The participating groups launched a petition directed at candidates which states, "It's time to fix democracy by strengthening voting rights, fighting big money through small-donor elections, and ending gerrymandering. I call on my federal, state, and local candidates to campaign on their plans to create the democracy we deserve, where everyone's voice is heard and everyone's vote is counted."

Fixing democracy has emerged as a key 2018 campaign theme with hundreds of candidates pledging to reject corporate PAC donations and introduce reforms to protect our elections and give everyday people a bigger voice. The 'Fix Democracy Now' week follows hundreds of nationwide candlelit vigils that attracted thousands of activists to 'Demand Democracy, Confront Corruption.'

Organizations participating in the 'Fix Democracy Now' week include Ballot Initiative Strategy Center, Center for Popular Democracy Action, DailyKos, Demos Action, Emerge America, End Citizens United, Every Voice, Indivisible, Latino Victory Fund, MAYDAY, MoveOn.org, Our Revolution, Patriotic Millionaires, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Run For Something, and Working Families Party.
