Demands for Release of Nuclear Whistleblower as Israel Holds Vanunu in Solitary Confinement
There were demands last night for the release from prison of the man known as the Israeli nuclear whistleblower after it emerged he was being held in solitary confinement in the same section of prison as some of Israel's most notorious criminals.

Miller) Mordechai Vanunu, who spent 18 years in jail for revealing details of Israel's nuclear arsenal in 1986, was sent back to prison for three months in May after being found guilty of unauthorised meetings with foreign nationals. Vanunu, who became a cause celebre for human rights activists around the world and was elected rector of the University of Glasgow in absentia, is being held in Ayalon Prison in central Israel.
Amnesty International is calling for Vanunu's immediate release and his brother, Meir, contacted the Sunday Herald to express fears over Vanunu's wellbeing after being the first person to visit him in seven weeks.
In an email, Meir Vanunu said: "I found him to be all right in general, but it was a depressing experience. The disturbing main fact is he is held in the hardest prison section there is in all Israeli prisons. It has the most notorious criminals in the country, well known hard murder cases and so on. Of course, there is no justification for doing this to Mordechai and it is only a continuous vindictiveness and harassment by the secret services and not serving any so-called ‘security' interests."
The harsh conditions of the dangerous criminals unit in Ayalon Prison means Vanunu can leave his cell for only one hour every day to walk in the prison courtyard. He cannot make telephone calls unless he submits information to the prison authorities about the person he wishes to call - something he refuses to do on principle.
Meir added: "On one hand my impression was that of course his spirits are down, as a result of being put to such harsh, inhumane and cruel conditions, and on the other hand from his words I could feel he continues fighting this reality to keep well and hopeful and sees the day of his freedom coming in six weeks."
The Israeli Embassy in London said Vanunu had received a fair trial. A spokesman said: "When it comes to Israel, Amnesty International becomes politically motivated. Amnesty International campaigns for people around the world to receive fair trials and that is exactly what Vanunu got, so it is difficult to see their logic. We are a democracy with a fair legal procedure and a court made a fair ruling on the Vanunu case."
Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Middle East programme director, said: "Mordechai Vanunu should not be in prison, let alone be held in solitary confinement in a unit intended for violent criminals. He suffered immensely when he was held in solitary
confinement for 11 years after his imprisonment in 1986 and to return him to such conditions now is nothing less than cruel, inhuman or degrading."
Vanunu has strong support in Scotland and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign has been vociferous in campaigning on his behalf.
In December 2004, Vanunu was elected rector of the University of Glasgow and in 2008 Glasgow City Council passed a motion calling for his release. First Minister Alex Salmond has also voiced support for him and shares his opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Mick Napier, of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: "After the Mavi Marmara [the Gaza-bound ferry raided by Israeli forces on May 31] massacre, when nine Turks were murdered at sea, it is clear Israel needs to be stripped of its nuclear weapons. Glasgow City Council has already passed a motion supporting the liberation of Vanunu and so it is a Scottish political issue."
After Vanunu, a former technician at Israel's Dimona nuclear plant, revealed details of the country's nuclear arsenal to the Sunday Times in 1986, he was subsequently abducted by Mossad agents in Italy and secretly taken to Israel, where he was tried and sentenced to 18 years, the first 11 of which he spent in solitary confinement.
In the mould of other famous political prisoners of conscience, such as Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi, Vanunu became a symbolic figure for human rights activists around the world who argued he had been persecuted by the Israeli government for merely alerting the international community to its growing nuclear stockpile in the most volatile region on earth.
Vanunu was released from prison on April 21, 2004. Since then the Israeli authorities have subjected him to police supervision under a military order, which is renewed every six months. Under the order, he is banned from communicating with foreigners, including journalists. He cannot leave the country and is forbidden from approaching foreign embassies. He must also inform the authorities if he wishes to change his address.
He was arrested in Jerusalem and charged with violating the conditions of his release three days after giving an interview to our sister paper The Herald in March 2005. He was arrested and charged with 21 violations of his parole by speaking with foreigners and of trying to leave Israel. Vanunu faced the possibility of a two-year sentence.
In April 2007 he was convicted of meeting foreigners, including journalists and his girlfriend, and was sentenced to six months. That was reduced to three months on appeal and he was given the option of community service in West Jerusalem. Vanunu said he feared being attacked and would only do the service in Arab East Jerusalem, where he lives. The court refused and jailed him on May 23 this year.
For years, Vanunu has been portrayed by some Israeli media and politicians as a traitor and an enemy of the state for disclosing Israeli efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Vanunu has twice said he has received death threats.
Israel's hardline attitude to Vanunu has been roundly condemned for years. His more famous supporters include Bishop Desmond Tutu, linguist and political thinker Noam Chomsky, and the late playwright Harold Pinter.

Israel is not-and never has been a Democracy!
In the May 28, 1993 edition of Yedioth Ahronoth, Ariel Sharon explained:
"The terms ‘democracy’ or ‘democratic’ are totally absent from the Declaration of Independence. This is not an accident. The intention of Zionism was not to bring democracy, needless to say. "An ethnocracy is the opposite of a democracy, although it might incorporate some elements of democracy such as universal citizenship and elections. It arises when one particular group-the Jews in Israel, the Russians in Russia, the Protestants in pre-1972 Northern Ireland, the whites in apartheid South Africa, the Shi’ite Muslims in Iran, the Malay in Malaysia and, if they had their way, the white Christian fundamentalists in the US-seize control of the government and armed forces in order to enforce a regime of exclusive privilege over other groups in what is in fact a multi-ethnic or multi-religious society. Ethnocracy, or ethno-nationalism, privileges ethnos over demos, whereby one’s ethnic affiliation, be it defined by race, descent, religion, language or national origin, takes precedence over citizenship in determining to whom a county actually 'belongs.'"

Whereas Israel locked Mordechai Vanunu back up in solitary 23 May, 2010 for speaking to foreign media in 2004,
Whereas on 18 June 2010, Malcolm Smart, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East Programme stated:
“Mordechai Vanunu should not be in prison at all, let alone be held in solitary confinement in a unit intended for violent criminals. Mordechai Vanunu is a prisoner of conscience. The prison authorities might claim that he has been put in isolation to protect him from the risk of attack by other inmates, but if the Israeli government is really concerned for his safety it should release him without delay. His re-imprisonment is both harsh and unjustified. The restrictions on Mordechai Vanunu arbitrarily limit his rights to freedom of movement, expression and association and are therefore in breach of international law. They should be lifted and he should be allowed to start his life again as a free man.”
Whereas on 24 April 2004, Uri Avnery wrote:
“Everybody understands that Vanunu has no more secrets. What can a technician know after 18 years in jail, during which technology has advanced with giant steps?
“But gradually it becomes clear what the security establishment is really afraid of. Vanunu is in a position to expose the close partnership with the United States in the development of Israel’s nuclear armaments.
“This worries Washington so much, that the man responsible in the State Department for ‘arms control’, Under-Secretary John Bolton, has come to Israel in person for the occasion. Vanunu, it appears, can cause severe damage to the mighty super-power…The world must be prevented by all available means from hearing, from the lips of a credible witness, that the Americans are full partners in Israel’s nuclear arms program, while pretending to be the world’s sheriff for the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”
Whereas, in 2005, Vanunu told me:
“President Kennedy tried to stop Israel from building atomic weapons. Kennedy insisted on an open internal inspection. When Johnson became president, he made an agreement with Israel that two senators would come every year to inspect. Before the senators would visit, the Israelis would build a wall to block the underground elevators and stairways. From 1963 to ’69, the senators came, but they never knew about the wall that hid the rest of the Dimona from them. Nixon stopped the inspections and agreed to ignore the situation. As a result, Israel increased production. In 1986, there were over two hundred bombs. Today, they may have enough plutonium for ten bombs a year.”
Whereas if Israel had allowed Vanunu the right to leave Israel in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009 and fade into history, instead of continuing to make it, I would not have written my third book:

President Kennedy didn't want Israel to have nukes? OMG, who really killed Kennedy? I am just freaked out that mosad can just go anywhere and kill or kidnap anyone, and there are no consequences for them.
I can't believe that the U.S. codems other nations for awful treatment of citizens and yet ignores Israel's actions.Exactly who are these mosad people and how many of them are in Washington?
Vanunu has to be one of the most principled people on earth, and he's paid, and continues to pay, dearly for it. Whether in or out of prison, he will always be a prisoner in Israel, and he deserves the right to leave.
It is surreal that the secrets that he revealed forty years ago are still "secret." Where are the international weapons inspectors for Israel, an apartheid country that is about as predictable as a cornered wild animal?
Vanunu exposed the truth in 1986. He endured 18 years in a tomb sized windowless cell for it, has been punished 6 more years under 24/7 surveillance that has potentially monitored his every email, phone call and movement through occupied east Jerusalem and and he is now back in solitary confinement essentially for speaking to foreign media in 2004-all of whom have been MIA ever since!
Israel is reported to be America's best friend in the world and hahahah the only democracy in the Middle East.

With the Israelis, everything is about revenge, codeworded "security." Guess that comes from sending every new generation of Israelis to Auschwitz for paranoia indoctrination.
Well, I guess you can't expect to persecute a tribe for 2000 years without having to put up with many decades of blowback -- even the suicidal kind.
Poor Vanunu: persecuted for trying to prevent his country from perpetrating the next holocaust. O, well, Moredchai, you tried -- and we appreciate it.

I have a rather technical question: if Mordachai Vanunu were a Jew, would the government of Israel have the power and the authority to deal with him as they have done, and as they are now doing? Because if the answer is yes, then every Jewish citizen of Israel, and every potential Jewish citizen of Israel in the world, should look to Vanunu and know that they have no rights against the state - the government - of Israel, and that Israel can deal with each of them as harshly, as arbitrarily, as it has dealt, and is dealing, with Vanunu for the crime of being displeasing and embarassing to the state.
If the answer is no, and they can deal with him like that because he is not a Jew...because he is a goy...well, then...I don't know what to say.
In 2005, I began a series of interviews with Vanunu and have met with him on all 7 of my trips to Jerusalem.
I was most interested in why he became a Christian, and in 2005 Vanunu told me:
“I was born in Marrakesh, on October 13, 1954. I was the second oldest of eleven; the first seven of us migrated from Morocco in 1963 after the Zionists came and convinced the neighborhood that Israel was the Promised Land. Instead of the land of milk and honey, we were banished to the desert of Beersheba.”
“I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish home, but rejected it all by the eighth grade. When I went to the University, I became an existentialist...
"At eighteen years old, I had my mind and health checked by the Israeli army doctors and was assigned to be a pilot. But I failed the hand-eye coordination test and was assigned to the Navy, instead. Three weeks later, they sent me to the Engineering Unit, where I learned about land mines, bridges, and explosives. I started training with fifty others and was the most unenthusiastic of the bunch. I stood back from it all and saw it as if it were just playing stupid games. Mostly, everyone else was serious, but I just didn’t care; all I could see was the futility. The day I left home for the service, my mother walked me to the bus. She gave me all the Jewish stuff--you know, the phylacteries? The leather straps for the head and left arm? I put it all aside until I got my first leave, and then I returned it all home and never said a word about it. I never spoke with my parents about rejecting their faith.
"When I was in prison, my mother came to me and told me that I was suffering because I was a Christian. I know I caused them a lot of pain, and they have suffered because of my case. I forgive them, even though they rejected me and my Christian faith. I have always thought for myself and made up my own mind. As a young boy, I thought too many of the rules of Judaism were of no use–like the rule that says you can’t mix meat and cheese together. Well, the first time I did, nothing happened, so then I began turning on the lights on Saturday. I tried to experience everything that had been forbidden. That first Yom Kippur I didn’t fast, didn’t pray, and felt totally free for the first time in my life....

How well I remember all the pious hand-wringing, head-shaking moralizing about those

In 2005, I met with Jeff in his west Jerusalem office and he informed me:

Three things:

I disagree. I think they consider that side of town to be very much part of their community...and only theirs.
2. (on the '89 abduction) I heard or read that they lured him onto a yacht, and that he was taken in international waters. Where (of course I know where...what I mean is when and through what source) did that story come from.
3. I know you attribute it to Melman, but I really can't find a place for "personal integrity" in there with the rest of Horeb's shit.

In a 71-page report released March 25, 2009, by Human Rights Watch, Israel’s repeated firing of US-made white phosphorus shells over densely populated areas of Gaza was indiscriminate and is evidence of war crimes.
"Rain of Fire: Israel’s Unlawful Use of White Phosphorus in Gaza," provides eye witness accounts of the devastating effects that white phosphorus munitions had on civilians and civilian property in Gaza.
"Human Rights Watch researchers found spent shells, canister liners, and dozens of burnt felt wedges containing white phosphorus on city streets, apartment roofs, residential courtyards, and at a United Nations school in Gaza immediately after hostilities ended in January.
"Militaries officially use white phosphorus to obscure their operations on the ground by creating thick smoke. It has also been used as an incendiary weapon, though such use constitutes a war crime.
"In Gaza, the Israeli military didn’t just use white phosphorus in open areas as a screen for its troops," said Fred Abrahams, senior emergencies researcher at Human Rights Watch and co-author of the report. "It fired white phosphorus repeatedly over densely populated areas, even when its troops weren't in the area and safer smoke shells were available. As a result, civilians needlessly suffered and died."
During Operation Cast Lead, the 22 days of Israeli assault on Gaza, "Washington provided F-16 fighter planes, Apache helicopters, tactical missiles, and a wide array of munitions, including white phosphorus and DIME. The weapons required for the Israeli assault was decided upon in June 2008, and the transfer of 1,000 bunker-buster GPS-guided Small Diameter Guided Bomb Units 39 (GBU-39) were approved by Congress in September. The GBU 39 bombs were delivered to Israel in November (prior to any claims of Hamas cease fire violation!) for use in the initial air raids on Gaza."

RE: Vanunu's kidnapping:
In 1986, Vanunu left London and flew to Rome with Cindy/Cheryl, just days prior to the London Sunday Times publishing the scientific corroboration to the sixty odd photos Vanunu had taken in the underground Dimona WMD plant that proved Israel had gone nuclear.
Legend has it that Vanunu flew to Rome from London with Cindy/Cheryl, just to have sex, although opportunity for that already existed in London.
In March 2006, I brought up the topic and asked Vanunu, "What were you thinking?"
He looked me directly in the eyes and maintained eye contact as he immediately replied, "No, it wasn't like THAT. A tabloid paper published a story with some of the photos of the Dimona I had taken. They never contacted me for my side of the story but they published my photo with a bad report; lots of lies. I knew I was in danger and I wasn't sure if the Times would still print my story. I thought I would just leave London with her for a few days."
When Vanunu arrived in Rome at what he thought was Cindy/Cheryl's sister's home, he was clubbed, drugged, bound and transported back to Israel in either a small yacht or a cargo ship.
Just prior to being driven to his closed door trial, Vanunu had been inspired to write his Rome flight number and the word 'HIJACKED" upon his palm and press it to the window of the van he was being transported in.
His inspired move was immortalized by a photographer and so inflamed the Israeli government, that afterwards, when ever Vanunu was being transported to his closed door trial, windows in the van were curtained or blacked out and he was made to wear a helmet on his head.

For Jesus was never a Christian; in fact the term 'Christian' was not even coined until the days of Paul, about 3 decades after Jesus walked the earth as a man. Jesus was a social justice, radical revolutionary nonviolent Palestinian devout Jewish road warrior who rose up and challenged the job security of the Temple authorities by teaching the people they did NOT need to pay the priests for ritual baths or sacrificing livestock to be OK with God; for God already LOVED them just as they were: poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Military Occupation.
What got Jesus crucified was disturbing the status quo of the Roman Occupying Forces by teaching the subversive concept that God preferred the poor, diseased, outcasts, widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all living under Military Occupation above the elite and arrogant.

Israel is just plain evil.
The Israelis and Palestinians I encountered on my 7 trips to Israel Palestine since 2005 ALL get what it takes to ensure 'SECURITY' for Israel: JUSTICE for Palestine which equates to ending the OCCUPATION and honoring EQUAL Human Rights for all.
