Global Warming Doubles Number of Hurricanes, Study Finds

by AFP staffwriters

WASHINGTON  - Global warming’s effect on wind patterns and sea temperatures have nearly doubled the number of hurricanes a year in the Atlantic Ocean over the past century, says a new study by US scientists.

Excerpts from the study by Greg Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and Peter Webster of Georgia Institute of Technology were released in the United States late Sunday.

The analysis identifies three periods since 1900, during which the average number of hurricanes and tropical storms increased dramatically and then remained elevated and relatively steady.

The first period, between 1900 and 1930, saw an average of six Atlantic tropical cyclones, of which four were hurricanes and two were tropical storms — the next category down.

From 1930 to 1940, the authors point out, the annual average increased to 10, consisting of five hurricanes and five tropical storms.

In the most recent period, from 1995 to 2005, the average reached 15, of which eight were hurricanes and seven were tropical storms.

This latter period, Holland and Webster caution, has not yet stabilized, which means the average hurricane season may be more active in the future.

“These numbers are a strong indication that climate change is a major factor in the increasing number of Atlantic hurricanes,” Holland said in a statement.

The scientists see a strong correlation between the spike in storm activity and rising sea surface temperatures, which “feed” hurricanes.

Over the last 100 years, these temperatures have risen by about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0.7 degrees Celsius, the study asserts.

The temperatures rose approximately 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0.4 degrees Celsius, in a period leading up to 1930, which was marked by some of the deadliest storms to hit the Atlantic Coast of the United States.

    Global warming is a myth.

    End war and corporate rule.
Maybe we can try some real democracy.
    Here lies your real problems.

There is way too much hard, and melting, EVIDENCE to call Global Warming a myth.

Global warming is a myth? Uhm, yeah, okee. Was it not just two years ago the “weather experts” aka Bush lackeys were telling us Global Warming was not responsible for the highly active and highly devestating Hurricane seasons? I don’t even need to be an expert, I’ve been saying the climate was changing for at least ten years from my own personal observations.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed; it is transformed. Emitting more CO2 into the atmosphere while reducing oxygen from chopping down more trees than we are planting, will have an effect. This is basic physics 1.

You do not have to be a Scientist to know that we are emitting more CO2 than any time in the planet’s recoded history. And, we can see the effects on the ice caps.

How is it that “Islamofascism” is this enormous problem requiring vast resources — and the ‘globe heats up with hurricanes and flooding and desertification, etc.’ — and the very same people have no worries whatsoever?

Ever wonder? I think that’s sort of the big question.

Seems like if you were worried enough about people with another religion coming over and killing everyone you might still have some room in your intellect for a slight discomfort over the idea that we could all be killed more efficiently by ‘mother nature’ –
but instead, one is this enormous all-consuming issue requiring all our resources, and the other is…’naaah, heats up, cools down…and besides it’s not man-made.’

    How does that all jibe?

Anyone can say global warming is a myth if they haven’t seen “An Inconvenient Truth”. If you have, you’re in denial.

For the first time in human history tyranny is global and the inevitable consequence is the irreversible destruction of the biosphere. Never before has human survival depended on the end of tyranny. We will not save humanity unless we end poverty and war. That is our challenge as a species, as a civilization.

(more fun if you link to the “hypocrite Gore” article at
    http://www.theonion.com/content/node/56631)

    THE ONION’s reported, aghast:
Gore’s raising the sea levels fast.
    The story’s untoppable
    He’s quite PhotoShopable
melting ice with a flamethrower blast.

    Because of that carbon-oh-two
the glaciers may cease to renew.
    He warns they’re receding
    and that we’re not heeding
an Arctic once white turning blue.

“We’re doomed!” says that hypocrite Gore
“Those temps will continue to soar!
    Dioxide of carbon
    means putting less garb on
just Speedos and thongs, nothing more!”

Though he frets, Gore has always denied
    warming’s upbeat, its positive side.
    The bikini prevails
    And booming beer sales
And a market for more pesticide.

It’s not ours to lose, but to gain.
    With climatic change, profits reign.
    The financial ruler?
    Whoever’s the cooler…
Invest in York or Lennox or Trane.

Some of the change might be due to a change in accounting procedures. Before the advent of weather satellites, some of the storms that aborted at sea may not have been accounted for.

Its surely about time that Americans stopped allowing themselves to be distracted by arguing the toss with those in denial of man-made climate destabilization, (whether the latter are paid shills or mere dupes).

What people have been (intentionally) distracted from is identifying and demanding policy to halt global fossil fuel emissions and to recover excess airborne carbon.

And to do that, the key requirement is an effective and equitable Treaty of the Atmospheric Commons.
(If it ain’t equitable it will neither be negotiable nor durable, and if it ain’t effective it again is not worth having).

Only when that treaty is in operation will national commitments be fulfilled without the crippling fear of loss of competitiveness.

So just when will Americans start discussing the structure of that treaty ?

    Regards,

    Bill

Why should anyone pay any attention to what Al Gore has to say on the subject. What did he do while VP? Bill Clinton had a WORSE environmental record than Bush Sr. How can Gore live THAT one down.

Corporations rule the world. Not just the US.
democracy, as it has been throughout US history, is a mere theory. Unable to praxis’ed because we are raised to be spectators. This spills over into politics.
Democrats are just as much corporate sock sucking war imperialists as Republicans. And NEITHER party seems to want to knock on doors in poor people’s neighborhoods. Neither party cares if, probably doesn’t even want, people to participate in the events of their own lives.

“We have to go TEACH the poor how they could/should run their lives.” As if humans haven’t been doing it all by themselves for eons.
The great education we get is how to get access to more and more industrialized entertainment. Including websites such as this. Yet we think we are more enlightened because we have less war, poverty, & disease.
“Others just weren’t smart enough to get to where are at.”

    Does global warming exist?
I’m not going to take Al Gore’s opinion on it.

    Increased hurricane strength?
The one that hit just near New Orleans was only a level 3. And the hurricane didn’t destroy it, the dikes that were not updated like they were supposed to be failed and the city flooded. That’s why insurance companies are trying to get off the hook for paying Hurricane insurance. Jerkoffs.

Even if global warming does exist,
I’m not going to listen to Al Gore.
And if it does exist, the only way you are going to end it is via democracy. You can’t buy your way out of tyranny any more than various well meaning people think we can buy our way out of sweatshops or slave labor. We need a real democratic revolution. (non-violent please. how revolutionary is a violent one? not very. done before.) We must end corporate rule of our planet, countries - US for us, our society, communities, workplaces, etc…. only real democracy will end any global warming that may or may not exist.

I don’t know if global warming exists or not.
I do know that corporate rule is very real and utterly transparent. (not a BushCo or Republican thing. Or even a Green party solves all thing)

Just don’t pretend we can buy our way out of it.
maybe poclad.org can give some insight to the denial of our potential.

  13. NoJusticeNoPeace July 30th, 2007 10:42 pm

    Global warming is real.

Democracy, liberty and justice for all the myths in the USA.

Corporations are like cancerous tumors sucking the life force out of healthy cells.

    Dennis Kucinich for President.

Hackers - please rage against the machine!

    Global Warming is a myth
    Blacks are naturally inferior
Gays are nothing but sexual predators
    Abortion is murder
    Cigarettes never cause cancer

Debate? What debate? We ain`t got no debate! We don`t have to have no stinking debate! There is no debate!!!

Even if you do not think that Global Warming and Climate Change are real, reducing the use of finite fossil fuels is just a good thing to do. We save money, there is less pollution and less conflict over scare resources.

It is its own reward and if it slows Global Warming and stabilizes Climate Change, then so much the better. You do not have to be a believer to know that conservation and energy efficiency is just the right thing to do and the correct way to go.

An article by Kossin J.P. et al. (2007) shows that worldwide there has been no noticeable increase in hurricanes, cyclones and tropical storms between 1983 and 2005 except in the Atlantic basin, the subject of the above article we are commenting. Since the Atlantic generate only around 15% of those events, this article is misleading. Instead of viewing Al Gore movie or read his books or the latest IPCC report, I suggest that the global warming crowd read a book called: “Extraordinary Popular Delusions, The Madness of Crowds”, written by a Mr Charles Mackay in 1841. This book is still of actuality after a century and a half.
