WASHINGTON

In support of Senator Sanders' Medicare for All proposal, the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), released the following statement, which may be attributed to David Levine, CEO and Co-founder:

"Businesses welcome Senator Sanders' latest proposal to create a publicly financed healthcare system in the U.S., and we thank the senator for his continued leadership on the issue.

"Today, employers provide health insurance for over half of the U.S. population, and continuously rising costs have made it harder for business owners to invest productively in their companies, employees, and communities. A publicly financed system would reduce the burden on American job creators by lowering their costs and reducing administrative complexities.

"It would also be better for our economy overall. The U.S. currently spends almost 18% of GDP on healthcare compared to about 10% in many other industrialized countries. This creates a significant competitive disadvantage for American businesses. Reducing healthcare costs would help American businesses to compete globally and make the U.S. a more attractive place for international investment.

"Senator Sanders' proposal represents an important starting point. It outlines the benefits that would be covered under this new system and provides a general structure for how that system would function administratively. As an organization representing American businesses, we strongly support the principles it embodies, and we are excited about finding a way for the financing and implementation to work for employers.

"We look forward to bringing business stakeholders together to refine this proposal. Senator Sanders has made clear his willingness to work with business to design a system that will work for everyone, and we are ready to come to the table to bring real reform to the American healthcare system."

The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) advocates for policy change and informs business owners, policymakers and the public about the need and opportunities for building a vibrant, broadly prosperous, sustainable economy. Founded in 2009, its membership represents over 250,000 businesses in a wide range of industries.
