Hillary Clinton stopped at a biodiesel plant in Newton, Iowa, last week to see alternative fuels in the making and to drive home the week's campaign theme of her energy plan. After a tour, the candidate took questions from the crowd.
She called on a young woman. "As a young person," said the well-spoken Muriel Gallo-Chasanoff, "I'm worried about the long-term effects of global warming. How does your plan combat climate change?"
"Well, you should be worried," Clinton replied. "You know, I find as I travel around Iowa that it's usually young people that ask me about global warming."
There's a good reason for that, too. The question was a plant, totally rigged in advance, like a late-night infomercial. Just before the public forum a Clinton staffer had chosen the young woman, a student at Grinnell College, and asked her to ask that specific question.
Trouble is, the young woman told others, and her account showed up on the Grinnell website, including mention that the staffer signaled Clinton whom to call on.
As other campaigns chuckled and hypocritically spread the news far and wide ("That's what George Bush does," intoned John Edwards at the Iowa Farmers Union), a Clinton campaign spokesman sheepishly admitted the plant. "On this occasion a member of our staff did discuss a possible question about Sen. Clinton's energy plan at a forum. However, Sen. Clinton did not know which questioners she was calling on during the event. This is not standard policy and will not be repeated."
Although other campaigns are righteously denying it, virtually every professional presidential campaign plants questions. It's a routine part of preparation for the advance people staging every event.
Not every question is planted, as you can tell from the weird ones that sometimes pop up. Most are arranged with more sophistication than grabbing a passing college student. They're done in advance with known local supporters who can be trusted and, frankly, are flattered by their moment in the limelight addressing the possible next president in front of friends. They want the world to think it's their own question.
A twist on this strategy is for a candidate's team to smuggle one of its supporters into an opponent's event to ask an embarrassing question while the cameras roll. Remember the confrontation a few weeks ago when Clinton accused one persistent questioner of being an opposition plant? And then she apologized later.

Show AllGO TO THE KUCINICH's OWN CAMPAIGN REPORT VIDEO (since the corporate media wants to suppress all views they don't want heard):

What a week it's been!
Dennis beat all the other Democratic candidates (declared and
undeclared) in the national Democracy for America poll. Thanks
very much for your
support.
In Congress, Dennis presented the privileged resolution on the
impeachment of Dick Cheney. The phones at all our offices have
been flooded with calls thanking Dennis for his principled
stand.
Back on the campaign trail, Dennis visited Iowa, Massachusetts,
North Carolina and New Hampshire. While the media in New
Hampshire was focused on other events, Dennis visited homeless
veterans to see how he could help them.
Watch the full reports and meet our new field reporter, Davis

As always, we thank you for your support,

"If Kucinich had a message that struck home to Walmart America (which, whether you want to believe it or not is where the votes are!) he'd be riding a wave of support to his nomination victory."
How do you know Kucinich's message wouldn't "strike home" with "WalMart America"? Has the corporate media/political machine given "WalMart America" the chance to even have heard of Kucinich? Kucinich's represents the populist-progressive message that has always resonated with the working class if they get a fair hearing of it.
Why do you think the Democrats are so AFRAID of Kucinich. Forget the "because he's so far left we would lose nonsense". Are you old enough to remember how far-out-fringe-right Ronald Reagan was regarded when he received the republican nomination?
We don't need someone who will beat the republicans by being exactly like one...
Why bother using this as a story? The Repugs set up the entire audience for the now Idiot in Chief. He and his cronies should not be pointing fingers and the media should not buy into this bs. If they would ignore this junk and write about real issues that matter, they would not have time to think about junk like this. W may have used Executive privilege a little too much. Will he be subject to the same regulations when he leaves the WH? We can only pray he can be nailed by the same things he has done to the entire world. We have the WORST despot on this planet.
Hilary Clinton using Bush tactics...again...what a surprise.
All I know is that when Kucinich and Edwards and some of the other candidates I admire such as Biden and Dodd and Gravel appear here in Las Vegas, they are merely a blip on the screen compared to the huge crowds that Obama and Hillary conjure up.
America needs someone who will beat the Republicans.
Celebrity,
Whoa there big fella! Did I hit a nerve? Before you attack the messenger know where it's coming from. I am NOT a Democrat... never want to be suckered into believing false dreams spread by big money politicians whether they are Dems or Repubs. And Hillary is the mega star of deceit.
I'm telling it like it is. PRAGMATIC??? Duh! Wake up. Kucinich has about as much hope of winning his party's nomination as he does winning over Walmart America! Yes, this IS the primary season! And if Kucinich had a message that struck home to Walmart America (which, whether you want to believe it or not is where the votes are!) he'd be riding a wave of support to his nomination victory. Instead, his message is conveniently "fringed" by EVEN HIS OWN PARTY!!! His campaign is being used just as it was in 2004 to pull well-meaning progressives into the Dem's lair...simply for votes for another corporate puppet. I'm afraid as a Democrat and not a leader of progressive change, he'll do in the 2008 convention what he did in Boston in 2004...capitulate and ask his followers to support the party's war-mongering corporatist! (And does it really matter whether it's Clinton or Obama? Really?)
I admire Kucinich for his idealsim and vision for this country. I did my part for his campaign in my state in 2004. But I refuse to be misled and used again... not by Kucinich but by his sell-out corporate party.
Kucinich needs to find a new stage for his message, even if it means as an Independent. If he feels that strongly about his idealistic progressive goals for America he won't continue associating with a corporate controlled party. I look forward to the day when he and his supporters choose another stage and another banner.
"If D.K. doesn't win the primary, I will have given up on this country's human intelligence and Soul–or lack of."
celebrity,
As much as I'd like to see it, Kucinich most likely won't win the primary, but don't give up. The ideals of democracy, justice, freedom are too sweet and important to ever give up on.
Get angry, fired up, and determined, but never give up!
"Stop the Kucinich silliness." This is just what was said last time during the "Count every vote Kerry" campaign. Until we have the courage to support the person we believe in, and stop playing disastrous political games, we'll never have the president we want. I'm supporting Kucinich, as much for the issues he raises on the campaign trail, as for his chance to become president. At least I sleep at night, supporting what I think is right, instead of "Bush-lite," games-playing and continued war.
newageartist: "Kucinich needs to break ties with the Dems before his message can be taken with any credibility by clear-thinking progressives."
I AM a clear-thinking Progressive, My Friend. It is YOU who is NOT! Issues and message. Issues and message. NOT POLITICAL PARTY!
democracy8888: Fatalism seems to be common on this "alleged" Progressive web site. IT'S THE PRIMARIES, STUPID!!! The PRIMARIES are where you vote conscience! If you want Hillary--fine. But if you believe in D.K. and his policies, VOTE HIM IN THE PRIMARY!
IT'S THE PRIMARIES, STUPID! THAT is where you vote heart and NOT fucking party loyalty bullshit. WAKE UP!!! Your logic is beyond faulty.
All those Kucinich heads out there. I feel your cry. Kucinich is my parents' representative in Cleveland. He is a good man with many good ideas. He is clearly more progressive than the others. He speaks much truth. Right message. Wrong messenger. Sadly, the system is also arranged in such a way to make his bid nearly impossible. And, after the previous two nightmare elections, resulting in Bush, we really don't have time for quixotic flirtations with one of the guys at the back of the pack. A Democrat, even a weak one, needs to win this next election. That will take focus and a hell of a lot of work. Pure? No. Pragmatic? Yes. In 2008, I think anyone on the moderate-liberal-progressive-left side of the political spectrum needs to be pragmatic, not pure. So, as I see it, your choice is between Hillary and Obama... and we'll throw in Edwards for the hell of it. That's it. Seriously. So, stop the Kucinich silliness. Focus, people!
Kucinich is the only one I trust.
I'm not commenting on Clinton. Too much said already. If you haven't gotten it by now, you deserve what you get.
But as for those pounding their chests for Kucinich just remember he's also a Democrat, even if he is their most "progressive" candidate. He's a plant almost like the "planted" Clinton questioners. He's the Dem Party's coy way of corraling all those energetic and idealistic "progressives" still in their party. These starry eyed people will sink time and money into Kucinich's primary campaign only to have his ship sink at the convention just like in 2004, then be asked to support the party nominee to make sure of a Democratic victory in 2008. Unfortunately, like in 2004, many will do just that.
If Kucinich was really serious about changing politics as usual and leading this country into a new direction he would announce plans to put into cabinet positions other true progressives and socialists who would cut the corporate umbilical cord forever. Has he said anything to this effect? No. He knows where his loyalty must remain, even if it's fed by corporate big money, globalization policies and agressive foreign policy.
Kucinich needs to break ties with the Dems before his message can be taken with any credibility by clear-thinking progressives.
President Kucinich will put the American people to work helping to make collective decisions in the society's better interests.
President Hillary will put the American people to work building bombs and missiles to continue powering the imperial rampage.
'just follow the money trail...'
Most of these candidates are self-aggrandizers. They are interested in power, money, and themselves. They have all jumped into one bed, it's simple. They could give a rat's ass about us. Truth is not in their lexicon. We're supposed to gobble up their bull -- hook, line and sinker. What transparent and sorry liars. They must be imbeciles, from in-breeding. The main-scheme media is patronizing them, like sick, incestuous relatives. Rome burns while Nero(media) fiddles.
The founding fathers are probably spinning in their graves by now.
What difference does it make? Whoever asks a question of her will only get prevarication, obfuscation, ambiguity, platitudes and nonsense. She has all of her husband's tricks without his charm.
hillary has been bought by aipac. that's why she voted to declare the iranian guard a terrorist organization. in effect she gave approval to cheney/bush's coming war against iran. she had to vote this way to keep getting aipac money.
so hillary means as much war as the cheney/bush sociopaths.
The L.A. Times would serve its readers better if it had concentrated on Mrs. Clinton's answer to global warming rather than give us a big report on how she got the question at some gathering. The Republican campaigns, after all, will be downplaying that issue by pre-screening out such questions altogether or continuing to deny that such a problem as global warming even exists. This article is for the "oh good grief" category.
The Clinton campaign is now no more than an AUDITION for the Trilateral Commission, Bilderberg Group and the Council on Foreign Relations. Machine politics for the status quo.
We need an ALPHA MALE--- VOTE KUCINICH!!
Dadster3: Thanks a lot for the link. I've gone there and sent it to everyone on my e-mail list. (They will either do it or not, but it's out there!)
If D.K. doesn't win the primary, I will have given up on this country's human intelligence and Soul--or lack of.
yup... she's a totalitarian fascist just like her best friend Bush.
Hillary is Bush-Lite.
MORE ABOUT DENNIS
On 6 Nov '07 (election day, appropriately) Kucinich stood at the podium on the House and
read H.R.333 calling for the impeachment of Richard Cheney. It threw the House into a tizzy for the rest of the day, and in the end it was referred to the House Judiciary Committee. John Conyers (D-MI) is the Chairman and has been favorably disposed to impeachment proceedings, but it is far from certain that the bill will survive in committee.
At http://www.usalone.com/hres333.php
you can voice support for Kucinich's Bill to impeach VP Cheney (H.R.333). With one simple entry you can tell (1) your senators & representative; (2) John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee which now has the bill for consideration; (3) all 39 of the JC members; (4) Speaker Pelosi & Majority Leader Hoyer; (5) the newspaper of your choice; and (6) whatever friends and relatives you want to make aware of this.
Many of us have been alarmed and appalled at the criminality of the Bush administration, and Cheney's contribution to it in particular. Suddenly we have an extraordinary opportunity to let our congressional leaders know that holding the Bush administration accountable matters to us.
Take a stand. Strike a blow to reclaim government Of the People, By the People, and For the People. Support H.R.333!
No honesty. No honor. No candidates... at least those elected by the media.
America, as an idea, is dying.
With all these Hillary scandals coming to the surface lately, my journalist friend hit a breaking point. I have been there a long, long time. Regardless, perhaps some others will appreciate the quiet rage in this column of his:
http://www.threeqblog.com/2007/11/clinton-guarantee.html
...Especially if they're a Chris Farley fan!
And of course the Democrats run out to defend more despicable Clinton behavior.
And of course the constant theme from the Demo-scum is that nothing matters more than winning. Who cares if you elect another pro-war, pro-corporation, anti-American-people politician President? As long as its a Democratic pro-war, pro-corporation, anti-American-people President, the Democrats are happy as pigs in a garbage pile.
Looks like most of the people here who aren't deliberately out here planting phony Demo-spin as comments have figured it out. Now lets see Hillary get about 5% of the vote come election day. Who would even consider voting for this scum?
Ah that famous Clinton honesty and integrity shining through again.
Hillary is a FxxxING liar. Haven't you all gotten bored with seeing her over and over. It'sll downhill now. She's overexposed too early. A waste of money and time. Good riddance. One Clinton was enough.
I have yet to read Clinton's answer, scripted as it was. Did she get any tough questions. I'm still reeling from the reasonable questions for Senator Kerry in Florida which resulted in guards attacking the student who dared to ask, pushing him to the floor and repeatedly tasing him...for not shutting up. Eventually he apologized, assuring him that he would not go to prison or lose the chance to finish his degree for asking questions. Think about that one.
How is this deceptive tactic any different than the chimp's? Besides Murdoch's support, is she taking tips from Rove too?
With few exception, the difference between the Democrats and Republicans is strictly one of style, not substance. Both support corporate hegemony, world imperialism and elitist contempt for the people.
Remember the court of Louis XVI and the Romanovs, their day is coming...
No surprise, Hillary and Bu$h the inferior use the same methods. They are both image over substance and politics over principles.
They this the US just needs a better media presentation and a more submissive population not effective policies, competence, and good leadership.
Definition of Jaded from Merrian-Webster's Collegiate Dictonary: "Dulled by experience or by surfeit.
From Webster's Dictionary of the English Language:
"Jaded: Tired, worn-out, wearied. Dulled or satiated, as from overuse."
From Oxford Dictionary: "Tired and lacking zest, usually after too much of something."
Jaded, maybe you need a break in routine to freshen up your outlook with some facts.
You need to read up on Hillary Clinton's overall personal history before branding her as a fascist, echoing and helping out little Lord Rush LimHawHaw and Ann Cold-tur in their propaganda campaigns.
Hilary is another ambitious politician running for the wrong reasons.I can't support any politician that fell for the administrations lies and voted in favor of invading Iraq without even taking the time to verify the information presented by a
group notorious for the use of underhanded tactics. It is finally time to elect a person that has a conscience and wants the office to effect change from the course of destruction.
". . . to Defeat the Republican Machine, and then bicker about what to do next."
It isn't strictly a "Republican Machine." Voting for Clinton will only perpetuate the fascist juggernaut. Better to cast a blank ballot.
Planted questions are routine practice in campaigns.
At least ALL the questions weren't planted, and there wasn't a so-called 'Fascist Buffer Zone' or whatever Bush calls his slimy censorship tactic to keep literally block out anyone who doesn't agree with him by use of barricades.
So what's our objective here? To join little Lord Rush LimbHawHaw and Ann Cold-tur in throwing more eggs at Hillary Clinton, or to make sure we UNITE so we don't have another Republican in office in 2009?
Right Now, America needs a Progressive coalition united with the Democratic Party to beat the Republicans out of Washington.... not more fringe parties to hand the elections over (again) to whatever the extremely rich and powerful Crypto-Nazi Republican Party ends up promoting as its 'candidate'.... the Far Greater of any two evils one might speak of.
The People, United, won't become Divided.
Unite to Defeat the nasty, treacherous, Republican Machine with a candidate who has the capacity to Win, and then bicker about what to do next, in 2009 and afterward.
Starting with genocide, slavery, and ruthless imperialism, the U.S. gradually -- despite its many corrupt and deceptive leaders -- rose deservedly to a position of honor in the world (all things being even). Now, however, it's time for Thomas Jefferson's remedy, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
And importantly: "Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories.-- Thomas Jefferson
Our government and elections have beome hopelessly corrupt.
Her broomstick runs on the blood of small Iraqi children, which is enviromentally clean.
"You know, I find as I travel around Iowa in my private jet, that it's usually young people that I pay to ask me about global warming"
That's right, check out Dennis Kucinich. Look him up on myspace.com or on youtube.com. Listen to what he has to say.
As far as I am concerned, he is the only good choice from the entire field.
Hillary and Barak are un-electable. If we put either one of them through the primaries, we are going to end up with Rudy Guliani or Mitt Romney as president. I don't think I need to explain the end result of that.

"So who do we vote for? They all play the game."
WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

{quote}: "Not every question is planted, as you can tell from the weird ones that sometimes pop up. Most are arranged with more sophistication than grabbing a passing college student. Can the LA Times get more condescending? They are suggesting that of course questions need to be planted, otherwise only questions would would be weird ones. PAH-LEASE.
Oh, and how about be 'flattered' by the limelight? Maybe for the moviestar wannabees, most of whom don't have two brain cells to rub together, they'd like the limelight. How dare they equate me to those dumb clucks.
The tone of this article is so offensive. The authors should be embarassed.
Judge them by their deeds, not their cleverly scripted words!
So who do we vote for? They all play the game. Finally, it is up to each of us to examine the history of the issues that each candidate has traditionally supported and vote on that basis. History tells us that few people change their basic values and positions once they are in the WH, regardless of what they say on the campaign trail.
First FEMA had planted questions, and now Shillary.
"Questions"? It was one question as far as I can tell.
It's all a dog and pony show. Vote for someone real, Dennis Kucinich. A reporter once said he's the first candidate he ever traveled with who never said anything "off the record".
