WASHINGTON

Today, Senate Republicans filibustered a vote to begin debate on the January 6 commission which would investigate the events of the insurrection at the Capitol earlier this year. This marks the first filibuster of this Congress. Battle Born Collective Executive Director Adam Jentleson released the following statement in response:

"Today's vote shows that even bipartisanship isn't enough to overcome the Jim Crow filibuster. Senate Republicans showed their colleagues and the American public exactly who they are and what they stand for today. They are more committed to obstruction and protecting the fragile ego of the defeated former president than safeguarding our democracy against domestic extremism. It's time to end the charade and get about doing the work voters sent Democrats to do.
"Senate Democrats have a responsibility to abolish the filibuster and protect our democracy. There is no longer any question about whether Republicans will put country over party--it is clear to anyone with eyes to see that they will not. The only question that remains is whether Democrats will take the steps necessary to protect our democracy, and end the filibuster. Failure to do so would be a dereliction of duty."
