Amnesty International USA Testifies Before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Regarding Limitations on Accessing Asylum in the U.S.

WASHINGTON

On Tuesday, September 24, Amnesty International USA, RAICES, the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, and the National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council 119 will testify on recent cruel and inhumane policies, regulations, and practices by the United States that are intended to undermine access to protection and deter asylum seekers. The discussed policies will include the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), which require asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their claims are decided, changes to the expedited removal process which permit the summary deportation of noncitizens with no right to see an immigration judge, and recent precedential decisions by the Attorney General that severely restrict eligibility for asylum.

WHO: Charanya Krishnaswami, Advocacy Director for the Americas, Amnesty International USA
Manoj Govindaiah, Director of Litigation, RAICES
Blaine Bookey, Co-Legal Director, Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, University of California Hastings College of the Law
Michael A. Knowles, Special Representative, National Citizenship and Immigration Services Council 119

WHEN: 11:30 am ET on Tuesday, 9/24

WHERE: Organization of American States General Secretariat Building, 8th Floor, Ruben Dario Conference Room, 1889 F Street N.W. Washington, D.C. 20006
