First Bill of New Congress is Sign of Change

On Thursday, Rep. John Sarbanes (MD-3) introduced HR1, the first House resolution of the new Congress. In response, Rahna Epting, Chief of Program for MoveOn Civic Action, released the following statement:

"Donald Trump is a corrupt con-man, so it's no surprise that he and Congressional Republicans are running the federal government like a corrupt business--sticking the American people with a costly bill and dysfunctional product.

WASHINGTON

On Thursday, Rep. John Sarbanes (MD-3) introduced HR1, the first House resolution of the new Congress. In response, Rahna Epting, Chief of Program for MoveOn Civic Action, released the following statement:

"Donald Trump is a corrupt con-man, so it's no surprise that he and Congressional Republicans are running the federal government like a corrupt business--sticking the American people with a costly bill and dysfunctional product.

"From Cabinet Secretaries treating tax dollars like a personal vacation fund to a new tax code that resembles a Get-Rich-Quick scheme for billionaires and cronies being installed to key roles with zero qualifications other than their pledged fealty to Trump, they are making a mockery of public service, and we're all on the hook for it. And Republican-led gerrymandering and voter suppression strategies, such as the one still being uncovered in North Carolina, mean that our democracy is under attack.

"But we showed in the November election that we want none of it. Democrats have a plan to get our democracy back on track and make it work for everyone, not just the wealthy few. H.R. 1, the very first bill introduced by the Democratic majority in the House, is a sweeping package of democracy reform and anti-corruption measures. From restoring the Voting Rights Act to supporting the end of Citizens United's flood of corporate money that drown our elections, HR1 is chock full of things that will make our democracy stronger--which is why Congressional Republicans are so hellbent against it!"
